The Earth needs your help. The Fae are calling you to harness the power of Nature. In return they offer assistance to enable you to thrive in this very modern world, in balance and harmony, and with a sprinkle of very real magic. The Way of The Faery Shaman, gives insight as to who the Faeries really are, which element they are connected to, and how to work with that element in order to bring about the magic that is actually all around us.
There are a great many different ways of understanding the idea of faerie/fairy. For Flavia Kate Peters, faeries are elemental beings, clearly divisible into the realms of earth, air, fire and water – she identifies beings like mermaids with faerie – not something I would do, but I find it an interesting line of thought. To quote Flavia: “The elementals are the faery guardians of a specific element, of one of the basic four, and their task is to literally make that element work. They are the power behind the elements.” As elemental beings, Flavia sees faerie as intrinsic to the natural world – the spirit and energy of this world we inhabit. Not everyone understands faerie in this way, but for those who do, the book offers an array of spells, meditations and ways of connecting with these spirit presences. Flavia Kate Peters has a lively, exuberant writing style and an enthusiasm for her subject that permeates every line. The book itself is very gentle, certainly suitable for beginners. Whether it will work for you depends a lot on how you understand the idea of faerie, and what kind of spiritual path you are on. I would suggest it’s an ideal book for a New Age reader, some Pagans will find it highly resonant, others will not. You need to be willing to see this world as alive with conscious presence, and to see those presences as fundamentally positive and benevolent. If peace, positivity, gentle playfulness and the sparkle of fairy dust appeals to you, then this is very likely a book you want to pick up. If you are more unseelie in your inclinations, or don’t relate to faeries as elemental beings or as present in our world, then this is probably not for you.
This is a fun little book with some very high level information about the fae. It is jammed with meditations and ceremony, and so on this point is well worth a read.
However, it’s incorporation of Southern Hemisphere timings was extraordinarily patchy; mentioned once or twice but not consistently; no attempt at reorienting directions for people outside the northern hemisphere; no exploration of any kind of fae outside of her own lands. Which, look, I get (she’s a Celt and focused in Celtic practise), but as a Shamanic Pathway about the Fae, it would have made for a much more complete work.
So would have a deeper exploration of types of fae. She mentions loads of them but only explores those with which she is familiar and likely works.
So, it’s perhaps a good starter volume. Loadsof gals, though, so perhaps that means one needs to be reading across a lot more genres.
I was delighted to receive a copy of Way of the Faery Shaman so that I could review it. I had a feeling it would be a joy to read, and I was right! I tend to shy away from any kind of faery book because I get tired of reading something abut silly little giggling being that dance around just to make us laugh. In this case, she takes care of that misunderstanding right there in the introduction. She makes sure the reader understands that faeries can be nice and friendly, or they can be downright cruel.
This is a fun little book, more designed for a Wiccan way of thinking, but still with plenty that would be useful to anyone considering working with faeries more in their spiritual practice. She tends to focus on the elements and their aspects as far as the faeries, such as meditations for each of the common four elements.
This is certainly what I would call an introduction book, however, there is enough good information that a reader could make a fairly informed decision about whether they wish to learn more after finishing. No matter your path, the meditations are useful and quite lovely. It is a short book, but well worth reading if you are curious about this path.
Even though geared more for women then men, I found thIs book not only entertaining, but also helpful. In each chapter, Flavia gives you different tasks to help you communicate with the Fey Elementals. I highly recommend this book!
