Written for 2026, Timelessly Relevant
As pointed out by John West in his excellent book, “Endowed by Our Creator”, G.K. Chesterton observed that America was the only nation in the world founded on an idea, a creed expressed by the Declaration of Independence “that all men are created equal . . . endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.” While not all the founders were Christian (a few, including some of note, were Theists or perhaps Deists) all were convinced and committed to the existence of God and His singular role in establishing the natural rights of mankind and the purpose of government to protect those rights.
Today, as we mark 250 years of this unprecedented idea, our common understanding of this founding precept is eroding under a barrage of secular denial. “Endowed by Our Creator” examines and substantiates the ideas of the founders, as well as how their principles have been diluted under persistent secular attack to where now, according to West, fewer than 40% of Americans agree that God is the source of our rights. West then calls for a return to our ideological roots, a return that increasingly is affirmed by scientific discovery and progress. Written for the occasion of America’s 250th anniversary, “Endowed by Our Creator” is of timeless relevance because the statist forces of secular materialism will never relent.
