There were good bones with this story, but it was too short to truly pack the emotional depth it tried for. The relationship moved too quickly from hate to love for my taste.

However, I liked both characters (and side characters) and enjoyed their story. Without spoiling anything, I liked Jax’s response to the conflict.

I was rather annoyed about the liberties being taken with hockey - off season in the winter? All star break in the late spring right before playoffs?? Also, the cover of the book makes the book look like it’s set in university but they’re at the NHL level and the premise is about them being forced to share a hotel room. Considering I’d only skimmed the blurb, I was rather surprised that the MMCs were 26 and 28 instead of late teens/early 20s.

loved!

Super cute love story. I love that Jax was so secure in what he wanted and never wavered. I loved how he cared for Eli, even when Eli pulled away. It was short and to the point sorry which sometimes just works so well because not everything has to be drawn out. Loved it!

💬 Review:
The enemies to lovers setup was done slightly better (hate fuck was ok, still short but I felt it kept MCs unwanted desire well mingled with hostility they held for each other). Lack of insta-love and organic growth of feelings helped to build the emotional connection between them.

There was a lot more action packed and romantic development before reaching halfway mark which was rather impressive. MCs had some actual, open communication which usually in those type of stories is deliberately ignored in favour of causing angst and frustration. I was glad to be spared that here. I liked the cast of supporting secondary characters who felt well fleshed out (Mars, Murph and Sophie added good comedic value, sass/banter, voice of reason and generally helped reduce unnecessary angst, guiding two idiots in love).

The story was also much spicier, which given the “stress relief” deal should not be surprising (previous book had this but smut was off page. I mean, if you have characters engaging in arrangement with benefits and it’s a big part of the plot then sex on page is definitely expected). Spice was steamy, descriptive enough to be explicit and plentiful, with growing passionate intimacy.

I enjoyed the golden boy x “goon” trope but at the same time I was tired of the same old 3rd act breakup. I wish the cliche drama with controlling parent was ditched or that Eli rebelled. The only saving grace was that at least here it wasn’t as nasty and Jax wasn’t fooled as hard though he was hurting deep. Luckily there was no massive fallout, as frustrating as it was, the resolution was quick, clean and straightforward (finally some logical thinking applied). The epilogue was satisfying and overall the story delivered more substance than I expected.

Lastly, sadly a wrong link to bonus scene was provided so I can’t comment on it until this is hopefully fixed.

"No talking. No feelings. Just—"
"Just hate."
"Yes."
"I can do that."

"I can't—" "Can't stop wanting you. It's embarrassing."
"It's not." "It's the hottest thing anyone's ever said to me."

“the terrifying, exhilarating feeling of falling for someone who might actually catch you.”

“I think that's what love is supposed to feel like. Being seen, exactly as you are, and being loved anyway."

"Whose opinion matters?"
"Mine. Yours." "The people who actually love me. Not the ones who just want to control me."

“Mine, the ring said. His. Ours.”

“They'd started as enemies. They'd become everything. And now, finally, they were home.”
