Distracted from working on his sci-fi masterpiece, Space Cows, aspiring writer Booker Jones must contend with an ailing grandfather and write a speech arguing that the school mascot should not be a pickle.
Betsy Duffey grew up with a love of reading and writing. Her earliest experience in writing came from reading manuscripts by her mother author and Newbery winner, Betsy Byars. She began writing in 1990 and has published over twenty children’s books, including a number of popular series. Her books have been Junior Library Guild selections, Crown Award nominees, and have been nominated for state awards in over twenty states. Her latest books are devotional books for adults. She began writing short meditations for friends who were challenged in different ways. More Peace started for a friend undergoing chemotherapy. More Hope for a young friend dealing with infertility. The series continues to grow. Betsy splits her time between Atlanta and the Georgia mountains. When she is not writing you can probably find her outside hiking in the woods or on the porch in a rocking chair with a good book.
A surprisingly insightful story considering the book is delivered as a children's novel. It is definitely worth the read because it is enjoyable and relatable to both children and adults alike.
Ah, the nostalgia associated with this book. My fifth grade teacher read it aloud to us, and I instantly fell in love with Booker, a fellow aspiring writer, whose novel contains the story of a herd of cows searching for life on other planets. His speech which attempts to keep the school mascot from being changed from the Wolf Pack to the Fighting Pickles is brilliant and hilarious. :D Horray for Booker!
A surprisingly poignant tale of growing up, making sacrifices, and the small steps that go into being a good and successful person. As a child I loved it for the parallels I saw within my own life, as an adult I love the parallels that bring me back to my childhood and why I feel that I am the man I am today.
Booker Jones is a ok short book. Sometimes reading it it got boring. It’s about a kid that loves to read a write. He also writes books and sends them to the editor. They haven’t responded yet to his book he’s sent in so far. He has to write a speech for his school.
