Two men with broken pasts. One chance to rebuild a future.
When rising film star River Lawson suffers a devastating on-set accident, his world grinds to a halt. Currently unable to communicate and drowning in frustration, he goes home to recover—pushing away everyone who tries to help. With the role of a lifetime about to slip through his fingers, River is terrified he may never reclaim the future he fought so hard for.
Newt just wants a fair shot at a normal job, but his criminal record shuts every door before he can even step through it. Until the day he intercepts a thief and saves a stranger’s phone—only to be offered a surprising a well-paid, live-in position assisting someone who demands absolute secrecy. Just sign the NDA.
River and Newt aren’t prepared for the collision of stubbornness and vulnerability, or the unexpected connection that follows. As River battles his way back to his voice, Newt may become the one person who can hear what he can’t say—and the one he can’t afford to lose.
Warnings Terrible behaviour by family members, use of a homophobic slur, violent behaviour by minor character, brief mention of suicidal thoughts, traumatic brain injury, death of a sibling from cancer.
Barbara Elsborg lives in Kent in the south of England. She always wanted to be a spy, but having confessed to everyone without them even resorting to torture, she decided it was not for her. Volcanology scorched her feet. A morbid fear of sharks put paid to marine biology. So instead, she spent several years successfully selling cyanide.
After dragging up two rotten, ungrateful children and frustrating her sexy, devoted, wonderful husband (who can now stop twisting her arm) she finally has time to conduct an affair with an electrifying plugged-in male, her laptop.
Her books feature quirky heroines and bad boys, and she hopes they are as much fun to read as they are to write.
I have a bit of a complicated relationship with Elsborg's books. They have heart and charm, but there's just a sense of familiar pattern to the prose and narrative and relationship that makes it slightly difficult for me to be entirely involved with the characters, regardless of how my heart ached for their unfortunate circumstances.
Newt and River—my heart went out to both of them. 🥺 All that they've lost, they've endured, and they still managed to stay strong in the face of danger and harm and adversity. Loved how dangerous and untouchable 24yo Newt got under River's skin, hehe 🤭,literally and mentally, until he slowly and surely proved to River that he was someone worth living for, that life was worth living because he was there. 😏
“Life is an…adventure. And I want to go on that adventure with you…wherever it takes us.”
It was lovely to see their friendship blossom from a professional set-up to that of mutual love and affection. A coy dance of playful banter and tender vulnerability, with its own drawbacks, somehow crosses the sadness and heartbreak to finally lower the walls of their lonely hearts to let a little light through. 😢 Newt offers River gentleness and trust, knowing what it is like to lose one's dreams but also to have the courage to reclaim them again. 🫂
The double entendre to the title is bittersweet and fitting, as it leans into River's job as an actor and the toils and drama he will have to face and how he and Newt both yearned for a second chance, a Take Two on life. 🎬 They deserved it for the unfairness of what they've survived, and that experience fuels their fierce protectiveness and loyalty, ensuring neither ever feel that pain or weak again. 😤
I have a special fondness for Elsborg's cover models, and this one captured Newt as the resigned, pragmatic, and cautious, a stay-under-the-radar guy, with his innate sense of goodness and kindness that made it easy to see why his heart still had room for forgiveness perfectly. 👌🏻
“I shared my first kiss with him. I hope I’ll share my final one with him too when we’re old and grey.”
River's agent, Max, may have been a dick, but in his own way, he truly did care and was dedicated and devoted to River's safety and well-being. 🙆🏻♀️ I can't help but hope there's a story for him in the future. You don't give so much of a personality to him without intending for it to go anywhere, amirite? Here's hoping, although I am curious about the prospects of Kaden's Monster, too; that would be interesting to see.
Newt's family was horrible, so I agree that spending any time more than necessary with them was a waste of time; however, it's sad I didn't quite get to feel the full impact of "serves 'em right." 😮💨 My petty butt also felt like the illness of a loved one was a forced sympathy card meant to lessen the heart-wrenching punch Newt suffered from a loved one. Yet, it did make for a much-needed emotional reunion, where Newt's inner goodness and kindness proved he could still see both sides of the mirror to somewhat easing the burden he's borne and be forgiving. ❤️🩹
“Love is what carries you through. Love hurts. Love heals. Love gives you a reason to keep breathing when you’re not sure you can.”
Somewhere around the halfway mark, both of their mannerisms and inner dialogues began following all too familiar tells and patterns that I've been privy to from the author's previous works that I literally went Oh, there it is; it just couldn't be avoided. 🤦🏻♀️ There's honestly nothing wrong with working with what you know, but I just wish for a little something --- new.
The suspense aspect—ah, it came and went so fast; I couldn't really feel it for how abruptly it shifted to have River's accident appease the ramifications of Newt's prison stint. Which I do give props to the author for portraying how difficult it is for an incarcerated person to - simply be. 😞
Despite my petty grievances, it really was a heartfelt and hard-earned journey with writing that breathes intimacy and growth into their relationship, of beautiful confessions and emotional resonance filled with delight, need, lust, love. 🥹 One where even in the bonus story, you'll be content to see that after the dark shadows of their past, they're finally basking in the afterglow of happiness, filled with laughter and hope for their future together. 💕
This one was captivating and really hard to put down once I started. That said, Elsborg has a signature style that I loved 5-10 years ago but which, despite being engrossing, often kind of misses for me these days.
I was really into the characters, their backstories and the circumstances that drew them together. Unfortunately, there were a couple of minor plot holes and too many dramatic plot elements for my tastes. It’s not that the many plot elements were confusing or overwhelming, but from my perspective, Newt and River’s family histories and River’s traumatic brain injury, recovery and the question of how and when River could or should come out professionally, could have sustained a very compelling story all on their own. I wouldn’t even say all the other plot dramas bogged the story down, they just felt over the top and unnecessary. But that’s Elsborg’s style and aside from the minor plot holes, it’s well written and engaging.
Leave it to this author to write the most compelling stories. Characters with depth, characters with a hard past. Characters who have to fight and heal to get their hea finally! Mission accomplished! What a story!
Newt wasn’t wanted, it rings hard in his head. He worked hard for his exams. After this and his eighteenth birthday, he will run away as fast as he can. His brother Phelan is the only one who cares for him. Fists and burning cigarettes, what he got from his criminal father, were completely neglected by his mother. It got even worse, downright cruel.
River’s stand-in was ill, River was scared but had to do the act himself, and my goodness, it went wrong, very wrong!
Finding a job after being behind bars isn’t easy for Newt, until, he gets a job offer. Signing a PDA is necessary. Working for a movie star, who’s injured, and has issues with speaking, listening, reading, and writing. River is rude, angry, and used just two words ‘fuck off’ Newt is determined to help him. Oh boy did he help him!!
This was a very impressive story, Newt and River were heartfelt and beautifully layered. The plot was genius, the writing so compelling, marvellously done! ALL the stars
OMG ! I was immediately invested in the story of River and Newt.
River Lawson is an actor who is injured in an on set accident. Newt has a crappy family and a criminal record and is struggling with life on the outside.
They are brought together after a random act of kindness/bravery and Newt is offered the job of helping River.
It was fun watching them get to know each other as Newt does his best to help River get back to his old self.
I enjoyed the fun and interesting ways Newt came up with to encourage River to re learn how to do things that used to come easily.
This is an emotional story of family, betrayal, hurt, healing and hope. It was well paced and I stayed invested in their journey throughout the whole book.
What a lovely story! 💕 River and Newt are two of the sweetest, most resilient characters I’ve ever come across. Despite the cruelty they faced as children, they choose kindness over bitterness in this beautiful slow burn, hurt/comfort romance.
When Newt, a wrongly accused ex con, becomes a live in carer for River (an actor who has lost his ability to speak), they don't expect their professional relationship to turn into a friendship and eventual love. It’s such an emotional read full of sadness and loneliness, humour and banter, and finally, loyalty and love. I totally fell in love with them both. By the end, he and River aren't just partners, they are each other's entire world.
Working together, Newt helps River find his voice, and River helps Newt realise he is worthy of love after a lifetime of betrayal. Their loyalty becomes their greatest shield when faced with danger.I particularly found myself drawn to Newt. He's so gentle and kind, but his kindness isn’t naive; it’s a brave, conscious choice to stay good in a world that wasn't good to him. The scene with his dying brother is so moving.
I just love Barbara's books. They give me so much pleasure, following how her characters grow and develop. There's always a degree of angst, but she deals with it deftly and cleverly. She's such a good writer her stories always leave me feeling really happy.
This was very… Barbara Elsborg. I feel like I should have liked it more, but it just didn’t work for me. The usual character/relationship dynamics didn’t fit the characters’ back stories. I usually love reading about communication issues, but in this book, I didn’t enjoy it.
Loved the 2 MC's and how they bounced back from familial adversity. Why on earth Newt didn't involve the 2 police detectives he'd spoken to previously when he was arrested for the second time, was beyond me. As far as his family was concerned though [apart from Phelan], good riddance to particularly awful and disgusting rubbish 🗑. Who in their right mind needs family like that 🤯?
I waffled over this rating but landed on 4 because I loved the heroes together. They were so good for each other! The emotional journey in the present, with one helping the other recover speech after a traumatic brain injury, was complex and felt authentic and satisfying, and their ever growing chemistry sizzled for me. I loved that.
OTT back stories…we really didn’t need the massive trauma on both sides; only MC Newt’s came into play. Famous actor MC River’s history just seemed contrived to have a reason for his agent to have become his father figure and could have been managed a simpler way, and it never impacts the story at all, but, whatever.
Newt comes from a family of criminals he was just about to escape at 17 when they framed him for his brother's crime and got him sent to prison. Newt has cut off all family, and he’s getting out of prison after 7 years when the book starts. His efforts to find work are heartbreaking and real.
His run-in with movie agent Max winds up being a godsend when the man hires him after one conversation to be a home helper and speech therapist (Newt did finish a psych degree inside) for his client, River Lawson, a very famous movie star who suffered a terrible fall on set. He’s still recovering from multiple broken bones, and more concerning for his career, has aphasia, and can’t remember words/speech/reading. He’s got to make a lot of progress asap for an upcoming role. But he’s his own worst enemy and has driven off everyone Max has brought in to help.
It's a delightful forced proximity story, and the closeted River has never been able to be with a man. Newt hasn’t ever dated, with his own secret history that he’s relieved not to have to disclose. Their interactions are fraught with tension and resentment, and Newt’s ability to shrug off every nasty thing River throws at him, literally and figuratively, eventually intrigues the star and their friendship grows from a very wary situation into something beautiful.
Seeing Newt get River out of his own head, out of the house, and seeing River respond to this baffling and intriguing man…it’s fascinating and I was flipping pages fast and furious. They’re such a good match, both having suffered and survived, both with secrets, and from their first kiss forward, I was all in and rooting for them.
River has a beard relationship with a huge pop star that gets in the works. He also has a stalker, and police have started suspecting his accident…wasn’t. Someone legit wants to kill him.
It’s intense and romantic and just fabulous in so many ways.
Things that didn’t make sense to me…Newt’s character from the opening, where he’s cowed and trying to escape and keep his head down from his awful family, to him coming out of prison to him suddenly being this snarky, clever confident guy seemed a stretch. But I loved who he became, so, whatever.
Max was a mixed bag. He really lost my respect toward the end, with his attitude about River ever coming out, and his treatment of Newt when things went down. I would have fired his ass, personal history notwithstanding.
The melodrama of Newt’s family also was hard for me. Forgiving his brother…even in the dire circumstances…sorry, I’m just not that big a person (@Pauline, warning for family member dying of cancer, and it’s a pretty big part of the second half). My petty self wanted Newt to still say F off, even in the face of apologies and actions that attempted to make up for the betrayal. But Newt is a bigger person than I. Still. I was like…No. Queen of petty here.
But even with OTT moments and telenovela stuff at the end, it’s a wild and rewarding ride, and I wound up satisfied and just loving these two together. So there ya go.
HEA. Ex-con on parole becomes caretaker for recovering movie star. Stalker, family drama, secret relationship. Newt's a virgin, and River I think had never been with a man? No OM action or drama; OW drama from River’s beard, but, they’re not actually involved so, no worries for me. She was a cardboard character. Safe for me! 😀🥰 Recommended.
Ooph, I don’t even know how to start… It was hard to write a review because this book made me very emotional. It is packed with so much angst, psychological and physical pain, suspense, and tragic events that I had to stop and take a deep breath to continue reading. These two boys broke my heart for so many reasons. Both their stories are about the hard struggle to survive, to dig out of the horrible trauma caused by different but hurtful events. I was so mad at Newt’s family, how the people who are supposed to love and protect you could so cruelly break your life, squash your dreams, and destroy your future?! Newt is the sweetest, most thoughtful, generous spirit. He wanted to grow up and become the person who will stand up for abused kids, to be the one who will help them to rebuild their confidence, to give them a chance to grow up and adapt to life that was taken away from them by different circumstances. You could see it so clearly how good he could’ve been at it by just seeing how patiently he deals with River. And because he wasn’t the son his father wanted to be, the one who would follow in the life of crime his family engaged in, he paid the high price with his freedom, his life broken and destroyed with malice. I hate his mother; you couldn’t even call her that, for what she did to him. Newt never got a chance to grow up and enjoy his life the way an ordinary young adult should. And going further, it seemed that it was never over; the trouble kept following him. River’s story is as heartbreaking as Newt’s, different, but filled with similar pain and loneliness. He is in the public eye; everyone expects something of him, wants to use him, but then they all abandon him, leaving him to deal with the painful, miserable reality of recovering. How those two were able to trust, to love, to find a place in their bruised hearts to open up for another person is so magical. There are beautiful, romantic, sweet moments; there are the small gestures that make another person feel appreciated, adored, loved. The passionate nature of their relationship is written so beautifully. The first steps they take in discovering what real love means, the strong physical attraction that doesn’t overshadow the tenderness of the emotional level, all of it is very masterfully described by Barbara’s words. I can’t mention a lot of things for fear of giving away some spoilers, but some characters played a big part in this book, too. Max, River’s agent, and Phelan, Newt’s brother, both played a significant role in the lives of our guys. I cried for Phelan and got mad at Max, but initially forgave him too. This book will keep you up at night. It is a story about the strength of love that can beat any obstacles and bring happiness. I loved it. I am going to read it again because it is worth it! And I hope to meet Newt and River again in the future.
Newt has been in prison for years, due to betrayal by his criminal family including his mother. Now he's out, determined not to have any more contact with them, but also finding that a prison record makes getting a job, any job, almost impossible. He may have studied language issues and earned a degree while in prison, but that's worthless with the criminal strike against him. Until he stops a phone-snatching in progress, and the grateful victim offers him a position. One he's oddly well suited for. And the man fails to ask that fatal question - "Have you ever been convicted of a crime?"
River was a highly-regarded actor, until the moment his stunt double was in the bathroom vomiting, and River was persuaded to try a cliff climb in person. He fell, hit his head, and broke bones. Coping with aphasia that limits his vocabulary to 2 words, painful physical recovery, and the added stress of not remembering why he agreed to risk his life, has turned him into a bitter, resistant person. He's alienated everyone who has tried to help, and is determined to stew in his own misery. This new personal assistant his agent hired will no doubt leave soon too.
Except Newt stays, no matter how often River uses his two word vocabulary to piss him off, no matter what River throws or scowls over. And slowly, Newt's cheerful unflappability, his unconcern with River's incapacities, and his sheer normalcy, get through. River eats better at Newt's behest, gets out of his house, gains another word, then another, and grows stronger. And friendship grows between them.
But there are dark secrets lurking, not just in Newt's past but in River's as well.
The situation with Newt's family was a bit unresolved (and I had zero respect for his brother, who waited to make actual amends till it cost him nothing - I'd have liked a little more bitterness from Newt.) But at least we saw Newt moving out from under their shadow. I liked that River's mentor and agent was an ambiguous figure, one who generally meant well but also had selfish motives and was less than perfect. The mystery had moments of tension, but the heart of the book is the slow build of relationship and recovery. That had a practical sweetness I enjoyed.
Barbara Elsborg has given us plenty of memorable characters through her many incredible stories, and once you meet Newt you will defo fall in love with him big time.
Being born into a well known criminal family and clearly unwanted for not being a big and strong son can eat away at anyone's confidence. Used to being neglected Newt studies hard and excels at school, planning every detail of the day he turns 18 and can flee his familial prison... Apparently his horrid family could be worse, they could in one fell swoop take away his future and his freedom. Shocked and broken hearted Newt can only watch his life disintegrate.
River was an incredible up and coming actor, with a glamorous woman on his arm and a huge fanbase, that public face hid his secret past very well. He had so many secrets to juggle it was tiring, but the only friend in his life his agent would go to many lengths to hide that fact, to any length necessary in fact.
Newt and River both had tragic pasts and were forced to stay in the closet, also the paths they took in life were so vastly different that they were never meant to meet.
After an accident on set River needed constant help, while after seven years away Newt was trying to pull his life back together again. An unexpected accident brings both our hero's together, Newt's education, his patience, his kindness, his resilience and his beauty breaks down River's defenses. Together they have to fight on many fronts, Newt's family, River's crazed stalker, his injuries even his agent, but will their burgeoning feelings for each other be enough, can they build the kind of family they both crave desperately?
This was such a great story, very much character driven, and boy how beautiful and broken they both were. Be ready to cry, to hate and curse and by the end to swoon. I didn't expect to get so emotional...
4.5 stars - I can always count on Ms. Elsborg to provide a fabulous damaged character story. This is a wonderful second chances story about Newt, who was betrayed by his family and spent 7 years in prison for that betrayal. Once he gets out, he struggles to get his life back when nobody wants to hire an ex-con. A good deed puts him in the path of Max, the agent for River, who is struggling to recover from an accident he sustained while on a movie set. Max hires Newt to be River’s caretaker in hopes he will be able to help him in his recovery.
River has struggled with his injuries. He has trouble speaking, understanding and even with his physical injuries. His frustrations have caused him to lash out at everyone who Max hired to help. Newt shows up and tackles River with precisely the attitude needed to get through. Newt uses his language therapy background to find ways to help River and eventually they start to pay off. Through this, their attraction grows, as does their friendship and ensuing relationship.
There are a number of hurtles these two must navigate, from Newt’s background and family issues to River’s accident and who was actually behind it. I loved Newt and River together and how Newt found different ways each day to help River break through some of his obstacles. Ms. Elsborg creates such an easy and comfortable read even when the issues get tricky and more involved. There is some mystery with who has ulterior motives for both of these guys, but especially River. Seeing these guys get their second chances and come out on top was the icing on the cake. Ms. Elsborg remains on my auto read list, as I am already looking forward to the next story she comes up with.
5* A touching, but not soppy, read with Barbara Elsborg's usual tugs on my heart; with a couple of guys brought together by fate - or maybe a higher power; with an organic mystery element that's seen through with devastating consequences. But remember, it's a BE tale, so it all works out 😃
I've never read a BE book that I've not enjoyed, and this is one of her most organic-feeling. It starts with a punch for both River and Newt - River's blow is devastating in how he may never regain control of his body, voice, mind and agency, and Newt's is devastating in how his life and future are taken away from him by betrayal by family, by people who should've loved and protected him. The two don't know of each other's existence until a good deed to a stranger results in Newt being offered a job in River's life.
The tale is perhaps a bit slower than some of BE's, but that makes it more realistic as we see River's physical and mental struggles. There's less of BE's trademark humour, commensurate with the seriousness of both punches. Newt's punch comes back to haunt him when trying to help River results in a (maybe deserved for the bad guy? Sue me, I'm a Scorpio) tragedy and cops (once again, wrongly) try to put two and two together, sending him back to the nightmare of his teens, rendering him speechless, unable to defend himself.
There's also the part of the dying sibling that really moved me. Yes, Scorpio-me, despite not being given to forgiving or forgetting, thought these scenes were done beautifully, with kindness, compassion and forgiveness, but with a lot of sadness for lives wasted, mistakes made, lacking courage to do the right thing; Newt was a bigger person than me to do what he did. You'll be moved to tears, I guarantee it. And what the dying sibling does in his last days, does make differences to Newt's life, just not the ones either would have chosen...
As with all BE tales, things come good for good people, and bad people almost always get what they deserve - here, satisfyingly so.
ARC courtesy of the author for my reading pleasure.
IMMEDIATELY you are invested in Newt. Imagining his pain and wanting out. And then to be betrayed. My heart broke.
And then River. He had it all until an accident took it away.
Both character arcs were so complete. River and Newt each going from the lowest of lows to redemption and the highest of highs. And it wasn't easy. River's battle was daily. Even though he had Newt there and Newt was really helping River, to River it was frustrating. Not fast enough for him. I'm sure we've all beaten ourselves up over something we wanted to happen immediately even though it wasn't possible. Newt's patience was amazing.
Newt grew confidence in himself even though the betrayal he dealt with was still there. Where River had an outward proverbial hill to climb, Newt just kind of closed the door on his past. Until it finally came knocking again.
I absolutely loved that both men were virgins. Discovering sex and intimacy together with no one feeling like they were lacking. Nervous to begin with but gaining confidence as their explorations went further. They were perfect together.
This book made me laugh, cry, SOB, cheer and smile.
Two men broken brought together to heal and get their new start. Newt wins for worse family of the year and pays the price and when is released from prison is unable to find work. River suffers multiple injurie including a TBI has to learn to do everything from the start and is paired with Newt a man who changes how he sees everything. With all River needs to relearn it is no surprise this is a slow burn and let's be real if it were anything else it wouldn't have been as impactful as it turned out. These two men heal each other slowly in the best way possible. They have an undeniable love that you feel in your soul that no matter what they endure in the future they will remain together in the end. When Newt's past catches up with him and things go sideways it's their connection that in the end saves both men. River puts everything on the line for his belief in Newt, while Newt catches some hope and is able to start putting his past behind him. A truly beautiful piece of writing that will leave you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.
This is another captivating story by one of my favorite authors. She never disappoints. It's a story about resilience, betrayal (not between MC's), forgiveness, about unexpected bond that stems out of necessity, but forged by trial grows stronger by each passing day. Did you ever met a person that seemed to read your mind and put your thoughts into words? That's exactly what River needed in so many ways, but practical side of it is on the top of the list because he was giving up and became secluded and belligerent. The intense and confusing chemistry between him and Newt doesn't hurt. Newt has so much to loose and he's determined to keep this job that fell into his lap when he was nearly out of options, no matter what. He's intrigued and irritated by his charge at the same time. They have a rocky road ahead of them leading to most satisfying ending. The arc of both characters is done perfectly. Add a mystery and author's signature touch of humour and you have a read that's impossible to put down.
Standalone. Close proximity. Hurt/comfort. First times. Dual POV. Heed content warnings.
Just released from prison, Newt has a huge amount of luck when falls into a job being the caretaker for an injured actor. River is not sure that anything will ever be the same after his accident, but being unable to drive Newt away may bring his lost hope back for a recovery.
All sorts of pieces of this story appealed, from the horrible pasts both River and Newt endured, to the healing help of someone that starts as a friend and becomes more, to the possible danger to River’s life and career. I really appreciated that there was no angst within the relationship, River and Newt fall and stay true throughout all the truths and danger. I enjoyed Newt’s resiliency and humor, and River’s tenacity and honesty. The connection between River and Newt felt true and special, and I found myself smiling every moment they were on page together. A really wonderful read from start to finish.
As always whenever I need a good cry Barbara is there to deliver. This book was no different.
I really liked River & Newt, but especially Newt. I was sad for both the characters and all the bad cards life dealt them but loved the healing journey they went on together.
I haven’t read a lot of this authors books but the few I have I have always appreciated the disability/injury representation from at least one character. This time it was a TBI. I don’t know much about brain injuries to know how medically accurate this was but the healing from the TBI was written well enough that I felt River’s anger and frustration the whole time.
I’m usually pretty indifferent to side characters since it’s not their story but whew I was not a fan of Max. I understand him, but I still don’t like him.
All in all I really liked this book and I continually read it without picking up another book halfway through, which has been happening to me a lot lately.
4.5 stars rounded up. Fair or not, every book by this author gets compared to Jonty. Most of them fall short, including this one, but only slightly. I really enjoyed this story but the first few chapters were really hard to read. I read to escape real life and all of the bad things that are happening in the world. So to start a book and the first few chapters are dark and gut wrenching, it takes the pleasure out of reading. But I had faith and in this author and powered through. Boy am I glad I did. I was in a reading slump but this story redeemed itself quickly and I was completely drawn into it. It does require some suspension of disbelief, but not a whole lot.
The pacing was good, the writing excellent and the editing was dang near perfect…I remember only one small typo.
Highly recommend, especially for fans of Ms Elsborg.
Once again Barbara Elsborg has taken me on quite the journey with this brilliant romance between River and Newt. Two wonderful men who both manage to overcome heartbreaking childhood circumstances so that they can thrive together. Theirs is not an easy journey with plenty of up’s and downs along the way but through sheer love and determination River and Newt do get their longed for and hard earned HEA. This engaging story is filled with a wonderful cast of characters, plenty of romance which is artfully balanced with the dramatic storyline and an ending that made my heart soar. I laughed at the witty banter and felt teary at times but it was well worth all the emotions as River and Newt are now lodged in my heart.
A beautiful story of two men who had suffered so much
A lovely story of Newt who had all these plans for his future when suddenly they were taken away from him and his life was put on hold for 7 years.
River is an actor who had so much going for him and had overcome so much grief to get where he is today. He suffers a horrible accident during filming that leaves him a shell of what he used to be.
A quick turn of events brings them together and Newt finds himself looking after River and in charge of helping him heal and find himself again. I loved how gentle Newt was with River, how it was a slow burn as they got to know each other more. The secondary characters added to the story and they were lots of things going on around to keep the reader engaged.
I just adore Barbara Elsborg's stories. There is so much depth and humanity in them and when there is a disability in them it just takes over my soul. These two MCs started out so very low. The situations couldn't be more different, but how they needed each other and how their lives progressed with each other was simply incredible. No one could blame River, but Newt was the only one to stay. His degree helped and so did his mind. Going through with River what it was like to have that TBI and the side effects had me in tears, it was terrifying. I certainly will have a lot more sympathy for those suffering from TBIs and strokes. And Newt and his relationship with Phelan, just overwhelming! I loved every minute of this book.
Compelling and mesmerising...sexy and thrilling!!!😍😍😍😎
An absolutely beautiful take on fated love. River and Newt forever!😉 Take Two has everything needed to leave you breathless. Crazy hawt with so much tenderness you find yourself melting. I laughed, I cried...this will live rent free in me for a very long time. I'm still shaking...😋 Full of hope, fear, love, betrayal, acceptance... and so much more! The MC's are superbly written. I highly recommend adding this to your library so you can experience this gem!!!😘
This book broke me and put me back together. But what else is new with a book by this author? I absolutely loved Newt. I loved River as well, but Newt definitely tugged on my heartstrings. He did not deserve what happened to him and what kept happening to him because of it. I'm so happy he and River found each other, and the way River stands up for Newt. This is not an easy book, but it's definitely a book worth reading.
I forgot how much I enjoy Barara Elsborg. I was looking for my next quick read.. and accidently tapped on Take Two ,instead of swipping up..I found it in my library 2 days later... And thought , I have it I'll read it.. omg..highs and lows. ..the two MC's showing such a strength of inner self, and moving forward in the face of such opposition ..I'm glad I was able to read this. thank you Ms Elsborg
Heartbreaking and heartwarming. The struggles of two boys that life treated very badly who joined together to fight the odds against them and find their way together to happiness. A thoroughly engaging story with characters that catch your heart and make you root for them from age one. Read it in one sitting with minor irritating interruptions by a cat and dog that objected to not being fed on time. Highly recommend.
I hesitated starting this one because I thought it was going to be all angst. Yes, it was emotional, but other than the first couple of chapters, it was just beautiful. The way they worked together, the way we saw their relationship and the way they both healed was so well written. I shouldn’t be surprised, Barbara Elsborg shouldn’t still surprise me with how beautiful her stories are, but here we are.
This book is very Barbara Elsborg, in every aspect. Take one injured famous Actor. Add a pinch of Newt. And then wrap it all up into a cozy mystery thriller with a very happy ending. I enjoyed every second of this book, it was sweet and funny and lovely and different from all my recent reads. Highly recommend! x
