This book is a collection of nineteen stories written by some of today's best mystery writers. It revolves around the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race and the festivities that take place in Indianapolis each merry month of May.
I got this book from my library, because I wanted to read one of the stories in it. The story "Tracks" by Sheila Webster Boneham is the story I was looking for. I enjoyed that story. It uses characters in her "Animals In Focus" series.
However, the rest of the stories, in my opinion were very poorly written, and not at all engaging to me. The last one was reasonably good, and I finished it. Most of the others I started just skipping through.
It is a challenge to write a full blown mystery in just a few pages, and it really shows in these stories. The story "Tracks" is much less ambitious, and therefore is much more successful in this format. It is the only reason I am happy giving this book a star at all.
This is a nice collection of very short murder mysteries revolving around the Indy 500. Between each one is a factual page about some aspect of the race. The stories range in quality a great deal, and you can tell it is difficult to fully flesh out a murder mystery in only a few pages. However, it is definitely enjoyable reading, especially if you are a race fan at all or live in the area.
Sadly I was unable to listen to this book on my digital player-hope to revisit again someday, sounded interesting but cannot talk about it if I have not read it-so i found a new book.
This collection of 19 short stories center in and around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, especially the Indy 500. Just to tell you up front, I am a big fan of both mysteries and the Indy 500 (I've been to every 500 since 1986)
Most of the stories in Racing Can Be Murder are about 12-18 pages long and between the stories are little bits of information about the track or the Indy 500, including biographies and odd facts written by Wanda Lou Willis.
The stories are of varying quality, which is to be expected with so many authors contributing to this volume...
If you were ever at the Indy 500 during the early years you can imagine some of these scenarios possibly happening. They are so believable, but all fictitious.
