I received an audiobook from net gallery for my review, this review is for it and the book
This story was very intriguing. It got me hooked from the first chapter. I don't like Murdaoch lol I really enjoyed the narration of this book, I loved the excitement in his voice
Thank you NetGalley and BooksGoSocial Audio for the ARC of this audiobook.
I'm giving this a 3.5. I absolutely loved the first book, it was a solid 5 for me. This book however had a lot of unnecessary moments just for the sake of having them. They didn't add anything to the story and even in some instances didn't really make any sense, leaving me questioning what I was listening to. With that being said, the development of the family members as a whole and individually was my favorite part. I loved and hated the bad guy of the book which usually means the author did a great job with that character's story. Craziness towards the end nudged this one from a 3 to a 3.5! Really enjoyed the final hour. Very excited for the finale in this trilogy.
A family of assasins drag the British, Americans, French and Russians into their violent tiffs - including kidnapping royals, epilepsy medicine, and freeing slaves. I recieved a copy of this book via TheNicheReader- thank you to them and A.M. Vergara.
This is a sequel to Fairfax, which I haven’t read but now I really need to. I got the gist of the plot and the complex relationships, so Son of Lubrerum still stands well on its own, but the descriptions and the action scenes were excellent and I want to go back to that extra detail.
The book opens with a lot of world dumping via dialogue, and we later get a character monologue her life story, but it works contextually so I’m not mad about it, it just wasn’t a strong start.
After the epilogue we swing straight into evocative descriptions of the setting, and the character introductions are solid. The characters are well-developed with unique personalities, so even though several of them go by multiple names (which I often find confusing), keeping track of who was whom and who knew whom and who was trying to kill who to avenge whomever else was clear.
Overall: 4/5, an action-packed historical fiction. Enjoyed: action scenes, excellent character building Didn’t enjoy: some awkward dialogue, the phonetically typed accent of the freed slave (i.e. the black character)
Oh boy. Phew, that was a good book. Damn that was good… Around chapter 4 I had to restart the book, because I was not expecting to be thrown into such a well written, well narrated story. Vergara, the author of 'The Son of Lubrerum', masterfully created a thrilling plot with an assassin family embedded into an early American revolution with an extra, Vergara spin on it. The rhythm and description of the words used mixed with Shakespearean excerpts, beautifully flowed with our narrator's, Vas Eli’s, voice and tempo. He firmly stayed true to each character's actual voice and style, completely making them so distinct between one another. Very well done. The author seems very well versed about the 18th century era and its revolutionaries, politicians, major events, Shakespearean plays, languages, treaties, and its ruthless cutthroatedness. Vergara really dominated that moment in time and made it hers. The story never once felt like it was about a mindless bloodthirst, there was so much compassion, reason, longing, love and emotion that went into each situation. Along with a magnificent family message at the end. This is a grade A, top shelf novel. I feel very lucky that I came across it in the archives of StoryOrigin.
Book Review: The Son of Lubrerum by A.M. Vergara 🎧📚
Thank you #NetGalley for the audio version of this book! 💕
Okayyyy… I really wanted to love this one. Like, Revolutionary War setting? 🇺🇸⚔️ Secretive vibes? Action?? Say less. I was READY. But… here we are.
I gave book 1 ⭐⭐⭐✨ (3.5 stars), and this one slides in at a solid ⭐⭐⭐ (3 stars).
🤔 What was tricky: This book is moving at full sprint 🏃♀️💨—which sounds great… until you’re sitting there like “wait… who is this again??” 😅 Between all the action and character jumping, I felt like I needed a cast list and a flowchart just to keep up.
Honestly, I think if I had physically read it instead of listening, I might’ve been able to keep track of everyone a bit better 📖👀. Audio + lots of characters = my brain working overtime.
⭐ Overall: Look, it’s still a fun ride 🎢 if you love historical adventures with mystery, danger, and a whole lot of chaos 🗺️💎⚔️. It just didn’t quite give me the connection or clarity I was hoping for. Would I keep going with the trilogy? Probably… because I need to know how it all ends 👀📖
This is an advanced review audiobook from Netgalley and BooksGoSocial Audio, and I am leaving my review voluntary.
This one was a mixed bag for me, but it kept me listening. The story picks up with the colonies close to winning, then everything shifts when King George brings in Russian mercenaries. From there, it turns into a mix of war and personal grudges, especially when Istäni and Murdoch start back up again.
I liked how it focused on both the bigger fight and the smaller, more personal side with Cara and Rafael trying to save their brother's kids. That part felt real and gave the story some weight. Istäni stood out the most to me. He is not easy to figure out, but he keeps things interesting. Murdoch plays his role well too, always feeling like trouble is right behind him.
At times it felt a little crowded with everything going on, but it still held my attention enough to see it through. Not perfect, but not bad either.
The Firefox family are famous and feared as expert killers. Murdock is the family leader but others want control too. Istani has taken control of the Fairfax home and Cara with Rafael want to save the young children under his control. Murdock has his own agenda and is working on behalf of King George who had brought In Russian mercenaries. War between Britain and the colonies will erupt.
Very well written and well narrated novel (I listened to the audiobook). Very good characters in an action packed novel. Fast paced and plenty of complex twists and turns. Can th3 family survive each other and the times they are living through?
An even bigger, meatier and more action-packed follow-up to "Firefax". Vergara took some big risks in this one and they paid off handsomely. Excited to see what the final volume of the trilogy has in store.
