1.5 star series imo.

Was very excited to catch up with this series because the series adaptation was so great but I was not aware of how much the showrunners improved on the source material. The novels are full of violent, abusive, emotionally constipated menchildren, portrayed in a very childlike and tacky writing style, though I would be unable to say who's to blame: the authors or the translators. The writing does not allow for the emotional investment that the series did, and it made the books really hard to get through.

This 6th book had no purpose. All it does is ignore all the loose ends left from 5 and add 10 more to the pile, leading nowhere and killing side characters for no reason. Porsche and Kinn's relationship is almost non-existent, after being the focus of the last 5 books, and we end up with more answers than questions. Which is a problem because this is supposed to be the last book in this story.

I am so mad and hurt at this book. I have loved this series since the beginning, including the show, but I am really mad at how certain characters have developed in this book. These are not the characters I have grown to love, despite their faults. I was on board with all the story lines and everyone’s baggage and struggles, but this not only seemed forced but also way too much has changed in a very un-characteristic way.

Then the twist at the end. Idk who that was for but it was absolutely appalling and held no value to the story honestly. The hurt was already there, there was no benefit to more.

I’ve made it to book 6, but very unsure if I will continue to book 7.

I love Vegas & Pete. I am a huge, huge fan of their relationship. Two broken, traumatized characters who saw each other completely, dark sides and all, and said 'It's you.' They match each other so well. I have no qualms about Vegas' violence. These characters are in a mafia world, of course there will be violence. Pete is also violent both physically and verbally towards Vegas. I love that Pete goes so hard for Venice and calls him his son. Venice is one of the best things that happened to Vegas & Pete(VP). I love how violent they are towards each other, this is fiction so I don't need to read about a wholesome loving relationship. Pete knows that loving Vegas is hard and it is. They are also embedded in the mafia world, one is a mafia boss & the other is a bodyguard, so there's no way their relationship would be super healthy. Vegas also hasn't ever seen a healthy loving romantic relationship, he's trying though.

My two issues with this book are: Vegas & Macau.
What happened to Vegas? Dissociative Identity Disorder is one of the most misunderstood and least researched mental illnesses in the world. Why the hell did the authors give Vegas DID??? Major Depression Disorder was right there! I have no qualms with the authors giving him a mental illness but DID does NOT fit Vegas. So in fiction unlike real life, mental illness can be a metaphor or symbolism for the character for better character analysis. The use of DID means that Vegas has no clue who he is. Because an analysis of DID would start that it is a fracturing of the self. That does NOT fit Vegas at all. Vegas is VERY confident in who he is and what he wants, to an extreme fault. He is extremely solid with who he is and makes no apologies for it. He's charming and confident, aggressive and bold, cunning and calculated. His confidence is one of the MAIN reasons why Pete falls for him. Because they both can supply what the other needs in terms of personality. Pete makes Vegas more kind, Vegas makes pete more liberated and confident. The whole reason that Pete talks about loving pain more in the last two volumes is BECAUSE of Vegas. That would not happen if Vegas was not sure of who he was, if he had a whole other personality he knew nothing about. DID also stems from very extreme forms of violent abuse usually faced in childhood. Kann dying doesn't really seem that traumatic. Also not only did the first 4 volumes cement that Vegas is the way he is because Kann(his father) had been physically abusing him for YEARS volume 6 throws that out the window! By saying that Kann really did love them? Lmfao, whaaaat! The man Vegas claims beat him every day since he was a child whom Vegas hates to the ends of the earth!??!? What are these writers doing?!?!

Also Vegas can speak english, which was NOT a thing in the first 4 volumes. The reason I and many others state that Pete is a masochist (both emotionally & sexually in my eyes) is because there is CONTEXTUAL evidence for it within the book series. Readers can go back through the series and read the many clues that state that Pete is a masochist. You don't get that with Vegas and this lame "plot twist" the writers cooked up for absolutely no reason. Also making his violent, bad side persona speak english? Yeah okay....iykyk.... his violent persona only justifies the things he did in volume 6 not before like yes people with mental illnesses cannot control their behaviors and I say this as someone with Depression. You will do and say things out of your control because you do not have control. People don't like hearing that but it's true anyways.... Vegas' bouts of extreme anger could stem from his depression and abuse at his father's hands that is a valid enough reason. Authors who are extremely talented could pull this off with ease. These authors cannot. Also the dr & psychologists telling Pete that Vegas has DID breaks dr-patient confidentiality!

On Macau: Macau is Vegas' humanity. I know Vegas is not a villain, to see him that way fundamentally misunderstands him as a character. When Show!Pete says that there are no villains nor heroes in life yeah that applies to Vegas. However, Macau is why Pete fell in love with Vegas. Macau shows both Pete and the reader why Vegas is NOT just a villain. Vegas is not out here raping and killing people for fun or ha-has. He looks out for and takes care of and loves his brother always. Macau is why Vegas gets up in the morning, why he put up with their shitty father's abuse.

Macau showed that Vegas could be kind, tender, loving and soft. Pete doesn't always see that (like he did not actually see Macau and Vegas interact a lot but the readers did). Macau is Vegas' heart before Pete & Venice came along and the authors KILL him off???? What are these authors doing?? Readers and watchers of KP know that Vegas does NOT play about his brother. The writers should have killed Vegas because it is literally the same thing. It might have been lost in translation but the scene where Macau dies seems like the police did not care at all. The tone of the scene felt very shallow. The only thing that felt serious was VP's grief. Macau is also not a fleshed out character. What are his hobbies? What does he like to do on the weekends? What kinds of friends does he have? The way Macau is written seems to be ten years younger than he is. He does not seem 18-19 at all.

What I dislike about the writing of the whole book series is that there are no descriptions and no retrospection or introspection for any of the characters. What do Vegas and Pete look like?? Give me details! The writing is shallow e.g "I want a perfect family. I want Vegas. I want freedom" okay Pete but WHY do you want Vegas? Why do you want freedom? Pete never waxes on why he likes pain so much ( I know it is a new revelation for him but a few sentences on why he likes it would have helped). We are also never in a character's head for more than one or two sentences and pov's change mid page.

Pete also says ".... They'd [the major clan] given me loads of money, underlings, and power." Money? If you had a lot of money why did you not leave as soon as you got with Vegas? I know Pete is uber loyal but He does say he wants to start a small business w/Vegas. Underlings? So having a few lowly bodyguards underneath you means a lot Pete?? Lol ok. Power? What kind of power does a bodyguard have??? Pete, Kinn didn't even let you stop tracking Vegas in v3 when Vegas clocked that you were following him & you were scared Vegas would kill you for it?? Pete in the major clan as a bodyguard, you cannot sleep nor eat when you want, what power??

Another thing I hated was that scene with Pete fighting with Vegas' bad personality and the syringe of meds given to Vegas. Lol! That is NOT how that would work. The syringe probably had a sedative but still it was so outlandish!

Themes topics: Love, grief, suicide, pain, mental illness, violence, trauma, freedom, and guilt.

I think this volume just showed how much I did not mind overlooking because Vegas & Pete's relationship and complexity was something that I really, really loved and enjoyed. I desperately want more Vegas & Pete & Venice but I don't trust these authors to give it to me the way that it should be. With grace, consideration, and understanding. Vegas & Pete will always, always hold a special place in my fujoshi heart.

Okay I'm not even sure where to start with this other than the fact that, compared to the whole series, it is utterly forgettable and completely disappointing. It is far to short to do anything and it barely followed up on or concluded any of the remaining plot threads left dangling in 5 and still left way too many things open.
Everything with Kim went absolutely nowhere although I suspect that he may be "Master", but that's up in the air considering Kim was very much implied to be very loyal to Korn. But that said he was meant to be the shadow boss keeping the Clan Feud going so?.
The whole Porsche and Vegas investigation plotline was pretty much completely done off page and also went absolutely nowhere.
A new character was introduced with a whole new dimension to the Clan Feud thing which went nowhere.
It even opened up a new plot thread, right at the literal last hour, which, obviously, is going to go nowhere since this is the last one.
To be honest, I think it should have just ended at book 5 with the dangling threads rather than do this and resolve nothing and only open up more.

What's even worse, in my opinion, is the fact that this could have truly been a really interesting journey and story of healing and psychological dives. It opens up a little with Vegas' mental health, but it feels shallow as it never really dives deep enough into it. Pete, himself, says in his narration he might have Stockholm Syndrome, but, again, it's shallow because it's never mentioned again.

Pete's whole storyline was boring, to be honest. His turn was very abrupt and sudden and it just felt like too much happened off the page. Pete's storyline could have been incredibly interesting with him dealing with the conflict of him suddenly being with a man and have conflict about his found Masochism and how that reminds him of the fact his lover has previously held him prisoner, tortured and raped him a year before. Instead all of it is just sort of hand waved away that he's just going to forgive and move on, when in truth that whole ordeal should have caused deep scars. It also could have dealt with his conflict of having to deal with the fact Vegas has another version of him now that is very overtly abusive compared to the usual Vegas who is a lot more affectionate and loving.
Love is not a good enough reason so it would have been great to have a proper exploration as to why Pete is doing this to himself. In the show, Pete can somewhat empathise with Vegas because his father was also abusive, but in this he's an orphan and was raised by loving grandparents so why does he empathise? Why is he putting himself through this? Why has he grown so attached to someone that had treated him so appallingly in the past? I bring up, again, how interesting it would have been to explore the Stockholm Syndrome aspect of it all.

Vegas' storyline really should have been a mix of focus about his investigations with Porsche and also a deep exploration of his mental health and his efforts to change and be a better person for Pete, which conflicts with the extreme actions he is doing when it comes to his work with Porsche. The two instances of him realising the other him had outright hurt Pete and caused him injuries was far too shallow. In the second instance he immediately runs away and tries to kill himself by jumping off a bridge then they just move on. There's no real exploration or thoughts about it.
I'm also not sure how I feel about the fact that the trauma of his fathers death triggered DID? Like it doesn't handwave his crimes from books 3 and 4, so that's good, but it also is very abrupt. At first I thought he was just suffering from psychotic breaks or psychosis and, to be honest, I think I would have preferred that.

AND MACAU?! Finally he is actually a character but, again, is just... a nothing burger. He tries to kill himself once then it's quickly moved on from. He's then shocked about being named Director suddenly then like an hour later he's either jumped or been pushed off a roof to his death THREE PAGES BEFORE THE END.

Edited in to add actually I really did not like how they retconned Kant to actually have loved his sons all along but in secret.

I cannot outright say this book is bad. I did actually like seeing Pete, Vegas, Macau and Venice being a little family and the softer moments, even if that took away from what really should have been the focus. But even that irritates me because of the lack of softer moments in 1-5 between Porsche and Kinn, which they did actually do in the show which only makes the show greater. But this book is a mess. It's too short to do anything of value and anything of value it does try to do is either off the page or so shallow that it makes it almost worthless.
I really think it should have ended at 5.
