This series has the regrettable misfortune of coming out the same week as another volume of Julietta Suzuki’s uneven but far more charming Otaku Vampire’s Love Bite and this doesn’t come close.
Even the yuri bent of this one can’t quite overcome how average it is, but that’s just how it goes sometimes. The mangaka wants to write about a tall girl and here we go, plus the diminutive Matilda along for the ride.
After last volume ended in unintended smooching, it turns out that August’s powers of vampiric mesmerism actually do exist. I appreciate how this ‘out’ for the romance quickly amounts to nothing.
Yes, the big change this time is that August and Matilda are both catching the genuine feels and trying to not to be so obvious about it. I would not describe this as amazing, but it’s still pretty fun.
This leads to a trip to town, as the new quest is to find a way to change August back into a human. There seems to be a set lore established here, but it’s kind of a hodgepodge that doesn’t quite fit within established vampire rules.
There’s also a quaint church with the overly friendly and, as it turns out, overly deadly Sister Michaela. She’s ready to put the fan back in fanaticism when it comes to purging vampires, but not before getting at least one kiss in.
In no way would I call this exemplary in terms of its story or art; it is a bit too simple in both respects. It’s a standard romance, just with bloodsucking, although bonus points for not using that as a stand-in for actual affection.
Nor is it hilarious, though it does have a couple of good jokes. August fending off Matilda at the start has a delightfully silly visual (never skip leg day!) and there’s a great loading screen gag when Michaela has to reckon with her preconceptions being challenged (not to mention her dubious response when something that doesn’t make sense to her raises its head).
It’s all very average, but not so badly average I don’t want to read it. I would call it more ‘chummy’ than good, but these silly sorts of manga can definitely have their moments now and then. And, however they’re feeling, August and Matilda are there for one another and trying to talk stuff through. That’s something more stories could use.
3 stars - there are better vampire manga and better yuri manga out there, but if you want them both at once then this remains a reasonable option. It’s very mid, as the kids say, but I like it.
