Rate this book
BATTLE AT FEI RIVERAs the northern emperor Fu Jian prepares to march on the south with an army of the undead, Chen Xing and his ragtag team of exorcists make one final, desperate attempt to convince him to reconsider. But even if Fu Jian abandons his unwitting alliance with the forces of darkness, that will only delay the plans of the Demon God Chiyou, not bring them to an end--and Chen Xing is no closer to solving the mystery of the Dinghai Pearl and releasing the Spiritual Qi of the Heavens and Earth, without which he knows they have no chance of defeating their ultimate foe. Xiang Shu, meanwhile, makes a drastic decision to solve what to him is the more pressing Chen Xing's imminent, fated death. Other forces are at work here, though, than the exorcists and their enemies, and when the pivotal moment arrives, nothing goes as either Xiang Shu or Chen Xing could possibly have planned...

This danmei stands out as the only one in which I wholeheartedly accept the use of the miscommunication and amnesia trope. The way these elements are executed is so skillful that, although I feel a sense of frustration, by the end of the story, I quickly forget about it and find myself feeling happy again. The volume was incredibly intense, filled with relentless battles that kept escalating, and then unexpectedly shifting the timeline, which caused the magic to return, truly a wild ride from start to finish. I particularly enjoyed the cameo appearance of a character from Legend of Exorcist, which served as a delightful reminder that this story is sort of a prequel.

Chen Xing is a protagonist who ignites an immense amount of love and admiration within my heart. He radiates hope and carries the desire to see the world peaceful and free from conflict. His willingness to sacrifice himself for the greater good is truly admirable. I don't usually favor self-sacrificing characters, but Chen Xing is an exceptional case where his noble intentions make him stand out.

Xiang Shu remains as much an asshole as ever, but he’s undeniably charming in his own way. He tends to avoid communication and expects Chen Xing to read his mind, getting mad when his expectations aren't met. His personality is prickly, yet beneath that tough exterior lie feelings that are soft, sincere, and deeply genuine, so much so that it's impossible to stay angry at him for long.
Again I don't really like asshole characters but he is an exception.

Their relationship is incredibly entertaining to follow. They engage in constant bickering, fighting, arguing, and sniping at each other, yet, beneath all that tension, there's a profound love that becomes evident, often bringing tears to my eyes. Xiang Shu is willing to do absolutely anything for Chen Xing, and he proves that in this volume through his actions. While I might not fully agree with his methods, there’s no doubt that he is completely head over heels in love with Chen Xing. I am eagerly looking forward to seeing how their relationship develops in the new timeline.

In conclusion, this volume was truly outstanding, and I am incredibly excited to see what volume 5 has in store.

“Living can be its own form of suffering.”

description

Oh no, I love Tuoba Yan! I just do!!! This volume stressed me out so much, and I’m not even new to difficult turns in a series. I can usually handle pain, tension, and characters making choices that make me want to close the book for a minute, but this one really got to me. I kept catching myself comparing this series with Legend of Exorcism because they’re connected, and every time I thought about Xiang Shu next to Li Jinglong, I felt a little disappointed. I don’t hate Xiang Shu at all, but Li Jinglong left such a strong impression on me that it’s hard not to feel the difference. Then the story brought in that regression, and I honestly thought, “Are we really doing this?” After three and a half books of buildup, it felt like everything had been wiped clean, and I was so irritated at first.

But the more I read, the more I understood why it had to happen. I didn’t love the feeling of being dragged back to zero, but I did love what it brought out of the characters. Chen Xing broke my heart here. He’s still carrying so much, still trying to save everyone, and still moving forward even with the truth of his fate hanging over every choice he makes. Xiang Shu also hit me harder mid-story. His fear, his desperation, and the choices he makes because of Chen Xing made their bond feel so much more intense. There were moments when I was frustrated with him, but there were also moments when I completely understood him. Even the bigger conflict felt heavier here, with Fu Jian, Chiyou, the exorcists, and all the chaos around them making the story feel larger and more painful without losing the emotional pull.

The last quarter is what completely changed my feelings. I had complaints. I had irritation. I had several moments where I wanted to argue with the book. Then the ending came, and suddenly it felt like an olive branch after a cataclysm. It was warm, painful, satisfying, and strangely comforting, almost like coming back to the feeling I had during the first volume. I used to think this was a great series that I respected but couldn’t fully love. That ended here. This volume made me fall in love with it. Honestly, I thought I’d finish this volume feeling a little confused since it’s only the fourth book and there’s still so much story left to tell. I expected to be left with more questions than answers. But I ended up feeling completely satisfied and looking forward to the next volume.

This series is just getting better and better. I absolutely adore this author. The chaotic humor of Chen Xing and his party is all the more entertaining now that they've gone back in time to the first meeting between him and Xiang Shu. Of the main characters, only Xiang Shu doesn't remember their past entanglement, but he still retains the emotions involved, and this much is clear from the way he interacts with Chen Xing. I'm so excited for Volume 5, and I'm glad I don't have to wait much longer.

Arise Zhang’s brain: *out of breath* Was that good?!

Also Arise Zhang: scrap that and do it all again but slightly to the left.

They really said, “do over!” And went back to the beginning of the story. Hysterical.

”There were so many things Chen Xing wanted to say right now, but he knew that once he said them, it would be just like that day by the shore of Hong Lake—there would be a man who set aside everything else to take him away from this mundane world and its responsibilities.”

This book I think almost made it to my top one in the series so far, but I still think the second one beats it by the tiniest bit. Still, though, this one was amazing.

Tuoba Yan’s death hit me a little, especially him leaving the ring for Chen Xing. 💔 Like Chen Xing told him that one day he’d find someone he loved, and he never did 😭 (I shipped him and Murong Chong (I know Fu Jian liked Murong Chong, but Fu Jian is just an asshole all around so I can’t see it). I’m glad that he’s alive now, but the fact that he doesn’t remember anything is so sad 😞 I know it’s for the best but still.

The whole Heart Lamp being the 7th light made so much sense and that artwork in the middle of the book right when the Dinghai Pearl released its magic and the both of them were dying was just gorgeous.

Then when Chen Xing wound up back in the past, I genuinely had to take a breather because his hysterical behavior had me cracking up. The hug with him and Feng Qianjun was just 🥹

At first, I was a little peeved that Xiang Shu didn’t remember anything, but knowing he eventually will again settled my nerves a bit. I also really enjoyed the moments we got between their re-uniting. I absolutely loved how Chen Xing adjusted what and how he said/spoke to Xiang Shu, such as asking him to be his protector, and sympathizing with not having a choice in who he was going to be.

And Sima Wei. Alright, so I loved the bits we got of him in books two and three, where it was implied that he wasn’t just fueled by resentment because he wasn’t the original Sima Wei. He was just a creation. Now that he’s revived without resentment, I loved that he’s just a funny cute whimsical guy.

Overall, I think this one is my second favorite out of all of them and I’m excited to see them speed run all of the events. I’m also very excited to see Lu Ying again and the entire Chi Le Chuan arc this time!

I usually love a good amnesia arc, but I'm not really sure how I feel about how it's being done here. Similarly, I love the time-reverse/do-over trope, and yet, I'm not quite sure if I enjoy it here.

halfway through Dinghai Fusheng Records, Vol. 4, in what is meant to be the final battle between our heroes and the demon god, the dinghai pearl is unsealed and chen xing and team are sent back in time to before they all even meet. all of them retain their memories of those three years that no longer exist, except for xiang shu because of... reasons (not very good reasons in my opinion).

armed with dangerous foreknowledge and new magic that has returned to the world, they try to prevent the very many tragedies from occurring again.

it's not that it's badly done. and I don't hate it being done... its just that I don't get why this was necessary. a lot of people died in the previous timeline, and there was a sense of great unfairness. chen xing and xiang shu were strong but still had their limitations ‐ they couldn't be everywhere at once, they failed so many times at saving everyone, only managing the slightest of victories. now they know exactly how to save everyone. now the whole team is more OP than ever. we're going through the same events from volume 1 and there's just no stakes, no weight to anything. it feels very contrived.

the thing is - I still love this story and adore these characters, and despite my gripes with the direction in plot, I still did very much enjoy this volume.

chen xing is cute, kind and funny as hell and I love seeing this bolder (and yes, mentally older) version of him interact with a not-quite-as-guarded xiang shu. and as corny and camp as it can be, it is genuinely wholesome to see characters be saved from their bad decisions made out of desperation and given a second chance at life and happiness.

4.5 ⭐️

This was so perfect and completely unexpected because I genuinely had no idea where the story was going. Just when I thought I was starting to lose interest, it took such an interesting turn that I immediately bumped my rating up to 4.5 stars.

I also love that my favorite found family is still together, and I’ll definitely be looking forward to more Xiang Shu and Chen Xing moments in the next volume.
