Throughout the book I kept feeling so much anxiety waiting for the shoe to drop! It’s what kept me so engaged- needing to understand what was happening! I loved it so much, the humor, the banter and the forbidden love!
My favorite quote: “She would let it hurt. She would let it destroy her. Even in a world that was not hers. Even in skin she did not recognize. Even in the bones of another.”
Six freaking star read. I’m still trying to come back to my body after this otherworldly experience. I feel a knot in my stomach and a hollow in my chest, somehow mourning a place and characters that I’ve only met in this book. I have a million questions and a need for 1000 more pages.
Unique and fresh magic system, my dream court dynamic, and amazing world building. The banter?? Top tier. No notes!
This was such a beautifully written slow burn fantasy filled with court intrigue, political drama, realm travel, hidden identities, and just the right amount of romance.
The story follows a resistance general who infiltrates a hostile realm by impersonating Princess Mia, her “echo form” in another realm. I thought the echo form concept was so unique and fascinating. Each person has a lookalike in the other realm, and the body-swapping element is what allows them to step into their echo form’s life. It made the world feel fresh, layered, and so different from anything I’ve read recently.
Her mission is to find the echo form of The Hollow King from her realm. In the Peninsula, The Hollow King’s echo form is the father of the prince she is betrothed to, which she knows going in, but that doesn’t make the mission any less dangerous. No one has ever seen The Hollow King’s true face because he uses magic to hide it, adding such an intriguing layer of mystery and tension to the story.
Amala Narayan built such an immersive world, and the magic system was one of my favorite parts. In the Peninsula, which is the other realm, the people obtain their magic from celestial essence known as Aether. That detail gave the story such a beautiful, otherworldly feeling, and I loved how unique and carefully crafted the magic system felt. I also really enjoyed the political tension and the way the main character had to navigate a court full of suspicion while trying to live up to the princess’s past.
The banter between the FMC and the prince was so good, and I loved watching their storyline slowly unfold. The romance is definitely subtle and slow burn, but it worked so well with the overall tone of the book. I also really loved the side characters. A strong cast can add so much to a fantasy, and this book definitely delivered on that.
The only reason this wasn’t a full five stars for me was the pacing. It was a little slower in places, but the world, characters, and unique concept more than made up for it. And that plot twist? I truly did not see it coming. It added such a good layer of shock and made me even more excited to see where the series goes next.
Overall, this was a beautiful debut novel, and I can’t wait to continue the series.
I absolutely flew through this book and will definitely be picking up the second one! The story was incredibly compelling, and I found myself constantly wanting to know what happened next. It’s such an engaging premise, and the pacing made it hard to put down.
The only reason this wasn’t quite a five-star read for me is that there were moments when I found myself wanting a little more grounding in the world and its rules so I could fully absorb everything that was unfolding.
The major reveal at the end was bold and exciting, but I also found myself thinking, “Wait — I’m not ready for that yet!” I still had so many lingering questions. That may very well be intentional and part of the larger arc of the series, but it left me feeling both shocked and eager for more clarity moving forward.
Overall, it was a gripping and ambitious story that I truly enjoyed, and I’m excited to see where the next book takes these characters and this world.
Okay, so before I get into my review of delightful escape of reality :) I ran into this author on tt and she was on my fyp. And I wrote to her and saw that there was arc ebooks and I got accepted, I know she was looking for feedback as you read, but girl I ate this story up. The mfc - main female character I felt she was so relatable in so many ways. The male main character had so much playful banter. I wasn’t familiar with fantasy politics, and world building I struggled with other books in this genre, but this author made the story line and plot as easy and lovable but also very manageable to read. This is 5✨read for me. The banter was a delightful treat. World building was easy to follow along, this story had a plot that kept me hooked.
A page turner fast paced.
This was a longer page count then what I’m used too but worth the read.
Thanks you taking a chance on me for being one of your arc readers and I can’t wait for the story to continue… I am ready for book 2. The suspense was just the right amount.
This is going to be one of those books that blows up because of social media. It is a low/no spice, but high tension romantasy about an “operative” who wakes up in another person’s body on a secret mission. It is a rollercoaster ride where you’ll be screaming why is this a big deal?! during conflicts but also know there is a ton at play that we just don’t understand. anyhoo… READ IT!
The first half of the book… 4 stars. The next 25%…. 5 stars. The last 25%…. 6 stars. and wtf was that ending??!
First can we just appreciate the writing? 👏👏👏 Second the creativity of the world?! At first, I’m like wow this is weird but what if…? it’s so unique and not like every other romantasy out there. Third, the side characters!!! I’d argue they’re more intriguing than the main characters. You definitely get Rhysand, inner circle vibes. And also if you love Septimus from Serpent and the Wings of Night, you’re going to ADORE Lukas.
Wow doesn't begin to describe how much I loved this book.
If you didn't know Ms. Narayan was a first time author, you wouldn't know by reading The Bones of Another.
While I am very upset that it is over, I am thankful she has announced the next book is coming this year!
It isn't weighed down by over the top world building, (a huge pet peeve of mine) the writing puts you directly in the room with the characters as if you've known them your entire life.
The Bones of Another is a debut novel by Amala Narayan and I cannot believe this was her first novel!! The story was engaging from page one. Not a cut and paste of every other romantacy book. Likable characters that grow throughout the book. Twists I did not see coming. Banter, tension and a swoon worthy MMC and swoon worthy and likable male side characters. I loved everything about this book and cannot wait for book 2!
The Bones of Another gives us two realms where every person has an echo form living another life on the opposite side. And when an operative from a resistance movement is transferred into the body of a princess consort presumed mute after an accident, things become emotionally catastrophic very quickly.
Because now she’s living someone else’s life. Loving someone else’s people. And slowly falling for a prince who believes she is the woman he was supposed to marry.
The emotional conflict in this story was INCREDIBLE. The FMC is constantly torn between duty and desire, between who she is and who everyone believes her to be. And the more she uncovers about her mission, the more she realizes she was never told the full truth.
And don’t even get me started on the reveal.
Watching Prince Zarek and his inner circle realize that “Mia” was never truly Mia absolutely wrecked me. The grief, betrayal, confusion, and love tangled together in that moment was written SO well.
But what really made this stand out was the aching question underneath the entire story:
Can someone love you when you’re wearing another person’s face?
The romance, the aethercraft magic system, the political tension, the mystery surrounding the Hollow King… all of it had me completely hooked.
Sent to another realm in another body, she is sent to discover the identity behind an evil king called the hollow king in her realm. This book had so much going on and the ending left me flabbergasted and ready for the next book. Definitely give this one a try ❤️ so well written I didn’t get confused not once ❤️
This book had me right from the beginning- and it only got better. Had to force myself to put it down! The author did an amazing job of telling this story, I didn’t just love the characters, she had me thinking about them and what was happening with them when I wasn’t reading! Amala Narayan has me hooked now and I look very forward to reading anything and everything she writes!!
I paused this one after devouring the first half of it, to save it for closer to our book club meeting when we chose it. I really loved the realm-switching premise, the razani, the mixed emotions about the morality of wanting to stay in a body/world that isn’t yours. I’m so curious to see what happens next!!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I devoured this book… so good and I cannot wait to find out what is going to happen in the next book! I loved the plot, the characters, the storytelling and just how on the edge of my seat I was. 4.5 stars ✨
Absolutely loved this book! Cannot believe it is this authors first work. I haven’t previously been a romantasy girlie but I am happy to be now. Great character and storyline. I couldn’t put it down.
The Bones of Another starts as a slow burn read as it builds up characterisation and the notion of two separate realms connected by echoforms. Corrina is sent on a mission into the second realm as her echoform the Princess Consort Mia Cortese to find out the identity of The Hollow King , whose brutal rule is killing her kingdom. About half way through, we get into the crux of the action and the pace takes off. I couldn't stop reading by this point, having become invested in both the central characters, their growing relationship and the dilemma that divides them - staying loyal.to their own kingdom, whilst also honoring each other. I look forward to book 2 in July 2026.
Review on social media: A slow burn romantasy with a political current. The Bones of Another follows a war-hardened resistance commander called Corrina, who survives a deadly mission that has killed others who have gone before her. She awakens in an enemy realm in the body of a noblewomanI; a body that echoes her own form, known as an echoform. Forced into this unwanted role, she has to navigate a hostile royal court where one mistake could prove fatal for her and her realm. The deeper hook of the story is less about the body-swap itself and more about what it does to the main character psychologically. She’s someone used to solving problems with strategy and force, but now she’s trapped inside a life governed by etiquette, political performance, and hidden alliances. Almost everyone around her expects her to behave like the woman whose body she now inhabits, and the tension comes from how long she can convincingly maintain the illusion. The setting reveals the new realm that she inhabits via court rituals, political tensions, military precision, propaganda, and a battle scarred history. A recurring theme is how identity can be shaped anderased by power, class, and war. We get glimpses into her own realm throughout. It takes about 270 pages to finally ramp up to the climax of the story and for the action to start, but then the pace gallops in lots od dramatic ways. The romance is slowly teased between the two protagonists and is roxked by issues of trust and suspicion. The pair are deeply entangled in political dangers surrounding their realms, which complicates things. Their relationship builds through uneasy cooperation, emotional restraint, and moments where both characters are forced to question what loyalty really means to them .The tone is tense and atmospheric and the books ends in a highly charged moment, readying us for the sequel due in July 2027. You will enjoy this read if you like books with court intrigue, secret agendas, shifting alliances, morally gray characters, moderate action scenes and a slow-burn romantic thread. Yes, it starts slowly, but hold out for the drama to unfold.
This book had such a strong premise, but the writing style completely pulled me out of the story. Every moment felt over explained, even something as simple as having breakfast. Nothing was ever just said plainly, /everything/ had to be compared to something else.
(( made up overdone examples of style I mean)) “He didn’t walk like a king. He walked like he’d been born knowing the world would kneel for him.”
“She wasn’t scared. Not scared like prey. Scared like someone standing at the edge of a cliff waiting to jump.”
After a while, every sentence started sounding exactly the same. It became exhausting to read because the prose constantly tried to sound deep and dramatic instead of letting the characters and story create the emotion naturally.
The repetition especially got to me. So many descriptions followed the same “not this, not that, but this” structure over and over again.
Like, “Not sadness. Not anger. But something heavier, like silence turning into weight.” “Not love. Not obsession. But something in between that refused to be named.”
And I also didn’t like how they say ohhh he was powerful everyone in the room stilled at his glance or sensed it in the air around him or flinched from his aura or something like this — it’s weak writing, /show/ us he’s powerful make him do something powerful, make him earn it or demonstrate it. A lot of the characters are described like this /:
The atmosphere was interesting, and there were moments where I could see the potential, but the writing felt so telling not showing that I couldn’t fully connect with the story or characters.
I’ve never read a book like The Bones of Another by Amala Narayan. From the very beginning, I was confused, unsettled, scared, and constantly worried for the main female character — with the overwhelming feeling that she needed to run and never stop.
This is not a cozy, comforting read you pick up before bed. This book gets under your skin, crawls into your nerves, and refuses to let go. And honestly? I loved every second of it. I would give anything to experience reading it again for the first time — that kind of emotional destruction is the best feeling.
The writing is excellent, the story is gripping, and the atmosphere is intense and unforgettable. I first heard about this book when the author talked about it on TikTok months ago, and it absolutely lived up to — and exceeded — my expectations.
I already plan to buy copies for my best friend and my sister because they deserve to be just as wrecked as I am. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for something dark, powerful, and completely addictive. I cannot wait for book two. I’m hooked, I’m ready, and I need more now.
This book was truly interesting to me! It was beautifully written, the writing immerses you in the story, you become wrapped in the grain of the plot, you feel like you have known the characters their whole life. I absolutely loved it! All the emotion, and feelings, the anxiety it all just has you desperate to read more and more. I had a hard time putting it down many times, and stayed up way to late because " I just had to finish one more chapter"I loved the fact that the world building in this story wasnt over the top, the book was all focused on that aspect. It was very nicely laid out and I cant wait to read more! because I am totally 100% obsessed! I am so thankful that I was given a chance to read this book!
I went into The Bones of Another excited, but I was not prepared for how completely it would pull me in. This was an easy 5-star read for me!! In this story, I genuinely never knew what was coming next. Every twist caught me off guard in the best way, and it made the entire reading experience feel so immersive and hard to put down. The dynamic between Zarek and Corinna/Mia was *everything*. The tension, the connection, the emotional weight behind their relationship worked SO well. Even after finishing this book, I’m still thinking about it. I’m SO impressed that this is a debut!! I’ll absolutely be recommending it to my romantasy reading friends!!!
The Bones of Another by Amala Narayan is a beautifully written romance-fantasy that pulls you in from the very first page. The plot is gripping, the pacing is smooth, and every chapter leaves you wanting more. The blend of fantasy and romance feels natural and immersive, creating a mysterious, emotional world that’s easy to get lost in.
What truly sets this book apart is its emotional impact. The love story feels raw, intense, and heartfelt, with moments that stay with you long after you finish. If you enjoy romance with a touch of magic, this is a must-read.
I'm a hard judge on books, and this one? Suspense. Intrigue. Puzzles. This book kept me hooked from the beginning. I was always asking myself: "What's up next? What's going to happen? Uh, oh......issues. WHAT THE.....?" This book did NOT disappoint and I cannot wait for the next one. The ending of this book had me going "A WHAT? There's another REALM?!" I am anxious to see what Corrina, Zarek, Dahlia, Lukas and the others do. My biggest surprise? Kalen. No spoilers here. You HAVE to read it for yourself.
Wow wow wow wow. I need book 2 immediately. My book club read this after finding the author on another platform. I almost rated this 5 stars but ultimately rated this 4.5 stars ONLY because it dragged there for a little bit if I’m being completely honest. I almost DNF’d at one point because it became a little slow which is the ONLY reason I didn’t give it 5 stars. If you’re someone who has a lot of time in their day to read, you’ll probably get through that bit way faster than I did, so that may not be a problem for everyone. I loved the ending and can’t wait to read on.
This book is indescribably good!! It’s been an insanely long time since I’ve picked up a book and absolutely could not put it down!
If you love fantasy books that are super original this book is for you! The characters were all so intriguing and the plot had me turning pages well past my bedtime. I am on the edge of my seat for the release of the next installment! Trust me when I say if you’re thinking of picking this one up, DO IT NOW!!!
As someone who isn’t a fan of the genre I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I have been hooked since the first chapter. This will be the first book I finish in 6 years, and it’s simply because of how captivating the story is. If someone can get me into a fantasy sci-fi romance novel, I have to give the author props.
An operative waking up in a new body?? Immediately yes.
The story never really slows down, the stakes keep escalating and I genuinely didn’t see some of those twists coming. I loved the dynamics between the characters and how their relationships added emotional weight without feeling forced.
I flew through this and I’m already impatient for book two!!
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a little slower than my usual reads. I loved the action and anticipation throughout the whole book, the cliff hanger on the end is crazy too. I wished there was a little more romance in it but that just because I’m a big romance person. Great world building and the characters are awesome!
I had my doubts as I started the book but it hooked me! The characters each developed with traits you came to enjoy about each and everyone! Gives Fourth Wing Ryders circle vibes. I had to keep reading at times because I had to know what was going to happen next! And the ending…I’m only mad I have to wait for the next book!
The saying “walk a mile in her shoes” is this book
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Only kissing
This is like the explanation of “walk a mile in her shoes” and ups it by 10.
At one point I couldn’t tell you who I wanted her with, and then I was like why choose (iykyk), and finally I was like well yeah duh.
To live in someone else’s body, and try to navigate a world that seems the same as your own but is vastly different. Such a great idea; that is brought together fantastically!
If I could make one request for book 2… bring a little more spice with the next one 😉😂
HOOKED from the moment I opened the first page! It’s truly a page turner and more importantly so rich and what an incredibly unique concept! Loved all the twists and turns it took me thru!! Can’t wait for more!!
