Catching a killer in this economy is no yolk.

In sunny Los Angeles, there are millions of people hustling every minute of every day, but for Detective Ashland Sterling, failure is not an option. Not this time. When the wealthy owner of the Reinhardt hotel is murdered in a break-in gone wrong, nothing is going to stop Ash from catching the culprit. Not the suspicious employees, not the creditors circling the hotel, and certainly not the mysterious PI who is as infuriating as she is attractive.

Charlie Roman might be a private investigator and chronic bisexual disaster about three seconds away from being evicted at any given time, but as long as she can still afford a breakfast sandwich in the morning, things could be worse. Her lack of funds certainly won't stop her from taking on yet another pro bono case to find her childhood friend's missing watch before the hotel he's working at gets shut down. If that means Charlie has to hang around the new detective with an attitude problem and legs for days, that's just a happy accident.

Between high-stakes interrogations and late-night rendezvous, these detectives will discover all the dangerous secrets the Reinhardt Hotel is hiding. And maybe Ash and Charlie will even start a few rumors of their own along the way...

Ever watched Pokerface? Our main character reminds me of the main in that series. They have different traits, different professions, if any really, but the general vibe feels the same.
It’s not a very difficult book to read or unravel, I had the mystery figured out right away. And that’s fine. The romance, or whatever you want to call it, is a kind of fun push and pull.

Overall I feel the story and the characters lack a bit of depth and body. Fun enough read, would read another book if it were to become a series, but I do need a little more.

As a fellow broke, unhinged, messy girl I really related to Charlie. Both FMC’s were lovable, and written very well. This story gave me Veronica Mars vibes! The banter between Charlie and Ash is so good. The writing is funny and the story is face paced. A funny/mystery/romance.

I received this book as an ARC read from Netgally. Thank you so much! I really enjoyed it!

Breakfast & Break-ins by Elle Kleos follows two women whose lives collide at a luxury hotel where things quickly spiral from messy to dangerous. What starts as strange break-ins and missing items turns into something much darker when a murder happens, and suddenly the entire hotel feels like a crime scene.

The story follows Ash, a detective trying to prove herself after landing her first major murder case when a hotel owner is found dead. She’s very structured, ambitious, and determined to handle things by the book. Then Charlie enters the picture a private investigator who feels like complete chaos at first glance. She’s impulsive, constantly inserting herself into the investigation, and seems messy on the surface, but the more the story unfolds, the more you realize she’s actually incredibly observant and always thinking a few steps ahead.

One of the things I liked most about the story was how the hotel itself almost felt like its own character. Between wealthy guests, suspicious staff members, hidden secrets, locked doors, and people constantly lying, there was always this feeling that something bigger was happening behind the scenes. Every new clue uncovered another layer of drama, and I loved how the author kept introducing suspects that genuinely felt believable. I was constantly changing my theory on who was responsible because everyone seemed guilty at some point.

The investigation aspect was definitely the strongest part for me. The two main characters spend a lot of the book trying to piece together what’s happening while also dealing with their own personal baggage and growing attraction to each other. As they dig deeper, they uncover secrets that connect the break-ins and the murder in ways I didn’t fully expect. The tension builds well once the story gets moving, especially in the second half when the stakes feel much higher and things start happening faster.

The romance felt more secondary compared to the mystery. It begins as more of a physical connection and there are a few spicy scenes, but I personally wanted more emotional depth between them. I understood the attraction, but I never fully felt that deeper emotional bond that would have made me root harder for them as a couple.

My biggest issue was the pacing in the beginning because it took a while for the story to really hook me. There’s a lot of setup before the mystery becomes truly gripping, and because I wasn’t fully attached to the characters early on, I found myself drifting a little.

That being said, once the twists started coming, I was fully invested. The final reveal genuinely caught me off guard and I appreciated that the mystery stayed unpredictable until the end.

I received an ARC from the publisher via Netgalley in return for an honest review.

Short Summary

Charlie is a PI, she’s broke yet still takes on pro-bono cases to help her friends. She is working a case at a hotel, undercover as a cleaner, when the hotel owner is found murdered. Ashland is a new detective, and this is her first murder investigation.
As Charlie and Ash’s investigations overlap, Charlie and Ash become entangled. And I’m not just talking about the case here.

My Review

The PI in this case was a new interpretation of the old school gumshoe. The PI that doesn’t seem as if they could find their way out of a paper bag, but for all their messiness, they are taking it all in, and are actually brilliant. That is how I thought of Charlie who comes across as a chaotic mess, but underneath it all her brain is always working and processing the facts.

Ash is a new Detective and wants to make a name for herself. Getting her first murder investigation is yet another way to prove herself. Getting stuck with a PI interrupting the case at every step wasn’t what she bargained for.

Ash might be exasperated by Charlie’s antics, but is uncontrollably attracted to her. There is open door spice in the book and sometimes the power of their attraction makes it hard to wait until they are somewhere that might be more appropriate – which is all part of the fun of the book.

I did find the large cast of secondary characters difficult to keep track of how they were connected. They all played a role, and were quirky additions to the plot, but at times I had to go back to figure out how they were involved in the story. Definitely could be a me issue and other people might have more success.

I found the mystery itself of who killed Karen, the hotel owner, pretty easy to solve. The book is more than the murder mystery though, with the focus on the FMCs and their relationship.

I know it is fiction. My partner would be telling me this as she does whenever we watch crime shows and I say that isn’t how it works. I will say the police procedures aren’t realistic – and maybe that was what the author was going for – but let’s just say if it actually went down the way it did in the book there would be a lot of people who would be up on internal investigation.

Overall, the book had solid banter, likeable, eccentric characters , and a good dynamic between the FMCs.

Thank you to Elle Kleos and Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA), Members' Titles for this copy in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed Breakfast and Break-Ins by Elle Kleos. The story follows Charlie, a private investigator who ends up helping her friend Julian retrieve a watch he misplaced at the hotel where he works. At the same time, Ash, a detective, is investigating the suspicious death of a hotel executive connected to that same hotel. Their cases quickly begin to overlap, and Charlie ends up helping Ash gather inside information that the police might not easily get. I loved Charlie’s character because she is clever, chaotic, and always thinking quickly on her feet. One of my favorite parts of her character is her willingness to help others in need without expecting payment in return.

The story alternates between Ash and Charlie’s perspectives, which I really liked because we get to follow both sides of the investigation at the same time. Ash is working through the official police leads while Charlie is uncovering information from employees and people connected to the hotel. The pacing felt quick and almost like watching a TV crime show with scenes shifting between the two perspectives as new clues are discovered. I also loved learning more about their backgrounds, including Charlie’s past working for an impressive PI and Ash’s former life before her new career path.

I also really enjoyed the buildup of the romance between Ash and Charlie. Their personalities are very different, with Ash being more structured and Charlie being more impulsive, but their dynamic made their partnership really fun to read.

What made this mystery especially fun was that the reader is trying to solve the case at the same time as the detective and the private investigator. Each new clue shifts suspicion to someone new, and I loved how every character felt like they had their own story and possible motive. Overall this was a really fun murder mystery with strong pacing, engaging characters, and a great investigative duo.

Thank you to NetGalley and Elle Kleos for the arc!

This book was probably a 3.5 for me but I rounded up. It was fun and I did enjoy the mystery element--I didn't have it figured out quickly which I appreciated.

Charlie is a hot mess, bisexual private investigator on the edge of being evicted. She's incredibly lovable and charming despite being a walking disaster, however. She has a lot of heart--often trying to do the right thing to her personal detriment. She's also extremely intelligent, highly observant, and almost has an eidetic memory. She kind of reminds me of Shawn Spencer from the tv show Psych.

Ash felt a little less fleshed out for me but I still liked her. She's a rookie cop assigned to her first murder investigation at a hotel. She's very driven and competitive, and she has a hard time asking for help. She works with Charlie on her case begrudgingly while Charlie is working her own investigation at the hotel.

There's definitely chemistry between the two of them. They also have opposing work-styles and are trying to balance investigating with hooking up. I do feel like the relationship moved a little fast. They've just met for the first time at the beginning of the book and the timeline is only about a week.

Honestly, my favorite part of this book was actually the side characters. I loved Josh, Ash's golden retriever coworker who is honestly so much nicer than she deserves. I also adored Julian, Charlie's best friend since childhood, and Maurice, her elderly neighbor and friend.

There were a lot of loose ends left at the end of this book and I hope that this is the start of a series that will follow through on them. Between the apartment building, Charlie's former mentor, and Mr. Butler there's a lot of information I'd like to learn and threads I'd like to follow!

Overall, I really enjoyed this and hope to get more!

“Maybe if you actually stay for breakfast this time.” “Breakfast, huh?”

(Synopsis): The wealthy owner of hotel in LA is murdered in a break-in gone wrong. Rookie detective Ashland Sterling is out on the case and nothing is going to stop her from finding the culprit.

First, I loved the title and the cover 👍🏽 that initially hooked me when I saw it on NetGalley! I love a cozy murder mystery love story.

The story started off a bit slow and confusing. There were a lot of character introductions from the start with 3 different female povs. I didn’t get a good grasp on who the characters were for a couple chapters.

The mystery aspect was definitely entertaining but it was easy to figure out. However, I did really enjoy how it was all wrapped it up in the end.

I loved Charlie’s character! Her character building was so good and interesting. Ash was a little harder to relate to, I feel like I didn’t understand her character until later on. And I feel like Ash’s character never fully evolved. But their romance was cute. Open door spice for sure but it didn’t take away from the plot.

Thank you to NetGalley for the eARC!

This one had such a fun premise: a murder mystery with a sapphic, slightly spicy edge, set in a hotel, with a detective x PI pairing and that classic “high-strung overachiever meets chaotic mess” dynamic. On paper, it really felt like something I would love.

For a good portion of the book, though, I wasn’t fully hooked on the mystery itself. It took me a while to get invested, and I found my attention drifting in the earlier parts. That said, once things started coming together, I did appreciate how unpredictable it was — my guess for the killer kept changing, and I never actually landed on the right answer. The reveal ended up being satisfying because of that.

The romance leans more into a situationship/hookup that gradually develops into something deeper. There are a couple of spicy scenes, but they don’t completely take over the story. I didn’t feel the emotional connection was strong.

And I think that’s what it ultimately comes down to - I just wasn’t fully invested in the characters. I could see what the story was going for, but I never quite got to the point where I really cared about what happened to them.

Overall, it’s an easy, entertaining read but it didn’t fully land for me.

Breakfast and Break-Ins: A Deliciously Spicy Mystery

Breakfast and Break-Ins immediately captivates with its fast-paced blend of romance and mystery. This is a thrilling whodunit that doesn't just offer a compelling puzzle to solve, but also an unexpectedly high degree of "spice." I was pleasantly surprised by the passionate intensity woven into the core plot, which elevates it beyond a typical cozy mystery.

The core of the book is a well-crafted storyline that keeps the reader guessing from the very first page. The mystery is engaging and the clues are cleverly scattered, making for a truly satisfying detective experience. What truly makes this book a standout, however, is the dynamic cast of characters. Each one is distinct, complex, and integral to both the romance and the mystery threads. Their relationships are the heart of the story, giving the whodunit its emotional stakes.

Ultimately, Breakfast and Break-Ins is a fantastic, balanced read: a good whodunit mystery that will keep you reading long into the night, delivered with a captivating blend of heart, humor, and heat.

(Thank you, #NetGalley, for the ARC of this book.)

A hotel owner is found dead. Detective Ash gets awarded her very first homicide case. PI, Charlie, takes on her friend’s request to search for his missing watch before the hotel shuts down. As their agendas intertwine, they find themselves working together (or rather, tapping into each other’s resources) to solve the case.

It took me some time to get into this, mostly because I had to wrap my head around the cast of characters being introduced.

Ngl, the main murder mystery was rather straightforward. But having several red herrings and an unrelated case festering in the background helped add a touch of complexity that had me second-guessing myself.

It was satisfying watching the main characters flirt, fall, and grow, though. Their banter was fun to read and I’d love to see these two work together on future cases.

If you’re looking for a humorous read that comes with a murder mystery featuring situationship between a queer detective & an unhinged PI (and some questionable procedures), give this a go.

I honestly wasn’t really sure what to think when I first started this book because it felt like there was a lot going on. There were multiple storylines happening, but something about it still kept me intrigued enough to keep reading.

Charlie is a private investigator hired by her friend Julian to find his missing family heirloom watch.  Ash is a detective who is investigating the murder of a hotel owner, and eventually everything starts connecting together.

This book ended up being such a fun surprise. It had this silly, chaotic vibe while still keeping the mystery aspect throughout, plus a little romance mixed in. The banter was honestly hilarious and the characters made me laugh so many times. It just ended up being completely different than what I expected in the best way.

Also… there is SO much talk about breakfast sandwiches 😂
