Mad for Mod Mystery #13

My Nightmare Is Yours: A Madison Night Mystery

Rate this book
A retro dream job turns deadly when the music stops—and Madison Night may be siding with the wrong suspect.

Mid-century modern interior decorator Madison Night’s latest job should be a transforming a 1950s ranch house into a retro recording studio. The catch? The client is a music producer who’s both a friend of Madison’s ex and the ex of one of her closest friends. Already caught in the crossfire of a messy post-divorce battle, Madison does her best to stay neutral—until murder takes center stage.

When pop singer Vanessa Wright, one of the producer’s two clients, is found dead in the park outside his home, neutrality is no longer an option. Vanessa was a former child star on the brink of a career-defining comeback, with everything to gain—and someone determined to stop her. As Madison digs deeper, she uncovers fractures within the singer’s inner circle and resistance to Vanessa’s collaboration with Madison’s client. When evidence begins to point squarely at him, Madison’s instincts clash with the mounting suspicion.

With her police captain boyfriend convinced the producer may be guilty, Madison finds herself on the opposite side of the investigation. Being right would cost her personally. Being wrong could cost far more than a decorating job.

With motives piling up faster than records in a jukebox and danger lurking behind the sleek lines of mid-century design, Madison must uncover who silenced the singer—before the microphone drops on murder.

This is the thirteenth book in the Madison Night mystery series, featuring a stylish amateur sleuth, mid-century modern design, and crimes where personal loyalties blur the truth.

Perfect for readers who love smart heroines, retro flair, and traditional mysteries with real stakes.

Really enjoyed it, this was an unusual theme, and I liked how it was clean for most part no stupid sex scenes. Madison Night is a very unique interior decorator. She enjoys dressing and integrating the vintage looks into her work. Her latest job is redoing a recent flip and converting into a recording studio. It's a tricky situation when the project is for her friend Connie's ex-husband. She is just getting together the project cost, when there is a murder involving one of Ned's new clients. Now to find out the details and hope to keep the project going forward.
Don't want to ruin any of the storyline but this is all pretty upfront on the press releases etc.
Can't believe I have not seen this series or heard of it before. Now I have to go back and read the back series. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this advance peek.

This is my first book in this series and I think it holds well as a stand alone. There is a lot of talk of the past and things that happened then so you do get a feel for the characters that way. I enjoyed the story, Mads is a bit kitschy and I enjoyed her personality and perspectives. I enjoyed the mix of strong woman running her successful business and vulnerable woman still affected by past traumas. All of this an intriguing backdrop to a strong mystery. The plot was twisty and yet seemed so straightforward. I very much liked that Mads never gave up even when she doubted herself. Great story I very much an interested in reading more in this series! I received an arc via BookSirens this is my honest review.

My Nightmare Is Yours is an intriguing, fascinating, twisted, cozy mystery. I love middle aged sleuth, Madison; her dog, Rocky; her boyfriend, Tex; and security professional , Donna Nast. They make up the core of this outstanding series. Equally interesting is Madison's fascination with all things fifties related. I love the accurate details about her remodels and vintage clothing. This well plotted book sucks you in and keeps you reading - to the detriment of your to-do list! Fortunately I started reading early and was not up all night to finish this adventure. The blurb has the plot but does not prepare you for all the twists, turns, interconnectedness and drama to come. I highly recommend you grab a copy as soon as you can. If you are not familiar with this series you will probably find yourself reading the other books and craving a Doris Day movie!

Another Can’t-Put-It-Down Madison Knight Mystery
I was so happy to revisit Madison Knight’s world in this newest installment! The mystery is twisty and engaging, and as always, Ms. Vallere does an excellent job of pulling me into the story until I don’t want to put the book down. The appearance of a character from a previous story was a fun callback for longtime readers, but even if you haven’t read every book in the series, this one works perfectly as a standalone. I highly recommend this book, as well as the rest of the series, to anyone looking for a fun, engaging mystery with a strong 50+ female protagonist. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I went on a journey with this book, and I mean that in both the literal and metaphoric sense. On a trip home from vacation in Peru, I had a long flight to settle in with the latest Madison Night book. Before the end of the flight, I felt like I had become a side character in the story because I was so invested in the outcome.

For once, characters acted like real people and confronted their problems like rational adults. I’m tired of plots that rely on constant misunderstanding to create tension. Surely this book’s murder of a rising pop star should provide enough tension. Throw in the ex-husband of Madison’s good friend Connie as the prime suspect and you have the start of an engrossing mystery, and it only gets better the more we discover about the crime and the people connected to it.

What really drew me in and made me forget my butt was going numb from sitting in an airplane seat for nine hours, were the conversations the characters had. They spoke from their heart, they prioritized open communication, and they didn’t play games with each other. When Connie’s ex-husband asked Madison to work her mid-century decorating magic on converting a 1950’s era cottage into a period accurate recording studio, Madison talked to Connie about it. She didn’t try to hide it and cause “hilarious misunderstandings”.

When Madison’s boyfriend Tex, the town sheriff, investigated the murder, he drew boundaries with Madison about what was acceptable behavior for a civilian and she respected his wishes. They unofficially worked together on the case as partners, not adversaries. Even Donna “Nasty” Nast, a former cop turned security honcho (and my favorite character) who sometimes helps Madison, was direct, honest, and practical although she did have a few ulterior motives in wanting to help the solve the murder.

Yes, there was a murder- not to gloss over that part of the story. The dead pop star is discovered in the bushes outside the apartment building of her last known contact when Madison and Connie are taking a stroll through the park. The more Madison and Tex investigate, the more motives surface and the larger the suspect pool becomes. Can Madison figure out the killer’s identity before Connie’s philandering ex goes down for the crime? If she proves it was him though, she’ll lose out on completing the dream job of creating an authentic 50’s era recording studio.

I was almost as invested in seeing the studio remodel being completed as I was with finding out who the murderer was. Diane Vallere makes mid-century design as compelling as an HGTV show and her murders are as engrossing as a BBC detective show. The solution of the crime arrived more from Columbo style investigating than James Bond spy work and I was thrilled to see that. It felt real, honest, and satisfying. The book, and the plane ride, was over before I knew it and I was left wanting more of this series (but more of the plane ride, not so much.) I highly recommend this engaging, authentic, funny, and clever mystery.

Every Madison Night book by author Diane Vallere is better than the previous one. My Nightmare is Yours is the thirteenth book in the series and I loved everything about it and can’t recommend it enough.

To say Madison has “grown” doesn’t really capture the way author Vallere has taken us through Madison’s life. To merely say she’s grown sounds like she was young and immature and had to grow up; she’s done that for sure but there is so much more. Looking and dressing like Doris Day, down to the smallest detail aside, Madison is a 50-plus successful businesswoman, with life experience and a serious relationship and she acts like it. She may be afraid at times but she is not weak. Her outfits are fun and at times frivolous, but she is talented and skilled at managing her business with its multiple locations and employees. Even though she may be wearing a cute mid-century-style dress with matching hat, purse and sneakers, when she opens her mouth what comes out is worth listening to.

I appreciate the way Vallere has managed Madison’s relationship with Tex. They are adults in a committed relationship but they maintain boundaries and independence while at the same time being there for each other. I also really like that there is no cutesy will-they-won’t-they or game playing; as I said, these are adults and it’s nice to see the way they relate to each other as their relationship has changed.

All that being said, that doesn’t mean there still isn’t conflict, mystery, danger and murder waiting just around the corner. In My Nightmare is Yours Madison can’t seem to get a break. She’s just landed an exciting new job transforming a 1950s ranch house into a retro recording studio. But of course there is a corpse almost right from the get-go. Even though she’s curious and like a dog with a bone when she is investigating and following clues, Madison is also serious about and dedicated to her business and to ensuring the quality of her design work and her reputation remain high, and she was all into this job with some clever and wonderful ideas that were perfect.

As always, author Vallere juggles the personal and the business with the hunt for the killer – and just staying alive – and provides unexpected twists and turns. This time Madison’s client is a friend of her ex and the ex of one of her closest friends, and old unresolved feelings and fears come up that impact what she has with Tex. At the same time, Tex is facing some health issues and Vallere has them treading carefully as they navigate these changes and challenges. The mystery is solid, the clues are there if you are as clever as Madison and can keep up, the supporting characters are old as well as new but all fascinating, and the ending is logical and satisfying. A new Madison Night book always feels fresh and comfortable at the same time, and another visit to Dallas and those adorable doggies is always welcome.

I received an advance copy of My Nightmare is Yours from the author as part of her review team. I recommend it without hesitation. I voluntarily leave this review; all opinions are my own.

What sounds like a dream job for Madison Knight turns into a nightmare.

Madison's close friend Connie is moaning about her ex-husband Ned because of a picture in the morning paper. Madison tries to get Connie in a better mood by going on a walk in a nearby park.. However, Madison's damaged knee acts up, and Connie leaves to walk home and come back with her car. Instead she returns in just a few minutes, struggling to stay calm.. She just found a body in the park. Unfortunately, Madison discovers it's the woman from the picture in this morning's newspaper!

It's a bit unsettling when her morning appointment turns out to be Ned, requesting her services to convert a 1950's house into a recording studio for his business. However she is off on an amazing dual track. #1 is undoing a remodel of a 1950's house and making it a recording studio circa 1955. #2. Find a killer because she doesn't believe it's Ned.

So many details discussed that are carefully accurate and interesting; from floors to furniture and everything in between for the project. Juggling that with daily issues and physical ongoing health problems, Madison is also concerned with Tex's health, Connie's mental health, oh ...and solving the murder. All before she becomes the next victim!

Once I started reading I. could. not. put. the. book. down! Seriously! I read until 3 a.m. with out moving and no regrets in the morning! (Maybe you should start the book earlier in the day.) It was a fantastic story in this excellent series.

My Nightmare is Yours by Diane Vallere satiated my craving for a gripping mystery with that je ne sais quoi lift. Though set in the present, reading about the mid-century era puts a smile on my face and fills me with nostalgia for my mom's childhood as she lovingly describes it.

Madison is a vibrant mid-century interior decorator in her fifties who fashions aspects of her life around the likes of Doris Day from clothing to decorating style. Her very real battle with chronic pain is restrictive (and relatable!) and she knows her limits but she chooses to put her all into everything she can. Her boyfriend Tex is a police captain which comes in very handy at times, though she sometimes disagrees with him. She is stupefied to discover the dead body of Vanessa with whom she has links. She is also hired to use her demolition and decorating skills on a flipped house which is to be transformed into a unique recording studio. Of course there are connections upon connections throughout, all meshing beautifully. The twists and tangles captivated and enchanted me and the tension is delectably taut.

I loved the mystery but loved Madison even more. Sometimes sleuths of a "certain age" are infuriatingly over the top but not Madison. She is likeable, brave, smart, wise, and realistically flawed. No idea how it is possible but this is my first time reading this author. I happily anticipate savoring her back catalogue!

My sincere thank you to Polyester Press and NetGalley for providing me with a digital copy of this splendid novel.

Several years (and many books) ago, Madison worked for Ned and his then wife, Connie, redesigning their house. While Connie and Madison have stayed friends after the divorce, Madison hasn’t had much to do with Ned. But now he is back, wanting to hire her to turn a 1950’s ranch house into a period recording studio as he hopes to transition from music promoter to music producer. Unfortunately, the morning he hires Madison, Madison and Connie find the dead body of young singing sensation Vanessa Wright, one of Ned’s two clients. With the evidence pointing at him, Madison finds herself in a unique position to find the truth. What will she uncover?

While Connie has popped up in multiple books, it’s been a while since we saw Ned. It was nice to see him again. You can jump in here and follow this book without having all the backstory. The mystery was strong with plenty to keep me engaged on the way to the logical climax. And I enjoyed seeing the growth in Madison and her relationships again here. Those familiar with Doris Day’s movies, especially her second one, will spot an Easter egg or two. When you pick up this book, you’ll find it anything but a nightmare.

NOTE: I received an ARC of this book.

Our favorite Mid Century modern interior decorator, Madison Night, finds herself once again looking into a murder. Madison is hired by an old friend, Ned, (who is Madison's friend Connie's ex) to turn a ranch house into a retro 1950s style recording studio. Unfortunately, a dead body is found who happens to be a client of Ned's. Madison investigates much to the dismay of Tex, police captain and her boyfriend.

Madison is a great character. I love that she is strong, smart and relatable. Diane Vallere does an amazing job with the descriptions of the mid century articles. The research definitely shows with the attention to detail. The mystery is engaging, the author throws us a few twists until the satisfying conclusion.

The book is a quick, fun read. I have to say my favorite character is Rocky, Madison's pup. This is the 13th book in the series and can be read as a stand-alone, but if you are new to the series, I recommend reading all of them staring with Pillow Stalk, the first. After reading the book, you might want to watch a Doris Day movie to get more retro fun. I look forward to Madison's next decorating job!

MISCHIEF, MALICE, AND MURDER

My Nightmare is Yours is Book #13 in Diane Vallere’s appealing Madison Night Mystery Series, and it is, in my opinion, another winner! I highly recommend it! Vallere continues to find ways for her quirky cast of characters, aka mid- century modern Interior Designer Madison Night, her boyfriend Captain Tex Allen, and of course, “Nasty” (Donna Nast, former police officer and now owner of Big Brother Security) to find themselves smack dab in the middle of mischief that turns into malice, eventually ending with a murder. If Night is not careful, her murder may be next! This plot is interesting because it involves previous clients of Night’s, now divorced, and who secretly still carry a torch for each other.

The husband is starting a retro recording studio that he has asked Night to decorate, but that is where things go south. There is a murder of one of his two debuting artists, and his ex-wife is the person who found the body! What a wicked web of deceit someone has threaded! Who will solve this case? Will it be Night, Tex, Nasty, or the combination of all of them to bring the killer to justice?

Polyester Press and NetGalley provided me with a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed here are entirely my own and without influence.

Mod designer Madison Night is with her friend Connie Duncan when they discover a body in the park. The young woman has a connection to Connie’s ex-husband who also wants to hire Madison for an intriguing design opportunity. Madison is caught between loyalty to Connie, Ned’s ties to her own ex, and her boyfriend, Police Chief Allen’s belief in Ned’s guilt. With Tex keeping a secret from Madison, differences over the investigation and ghosts from the past intruding, can Madison trust in their relationship? When Madison gets in the killer’s way, will that be the end of Mad for Mod?

Though my first read in this series, I found myself easily drawn into Madison’s world. Mid Century Modern is definitely my aesthetic so it was easy to imagine the clothing and designs as described in the narrative. Ms. Vallere provided enough backstory on the characters and previous events to not feel lost jumping in mid-series. The mystery was engaging, well plotted, and kept me guessing until the final reveal. Looking forward to spending more time with Madison and friends as I read through the earlier volumes.

My Nightmare Is Yours is another entertaining installment in Vallere's Madison Night mystery series. I love reading new books in this series, and this latest one definitely doesn't disappoint. Madison is offered a dream job by a past friend and ex-husband of her current friend. Designing a recording studio is definitely up Madison's alley, and she is excited about it despite her reservations of dredging up the past. When the new recording artist of her new boss is murdered, Madison finds herself in the middle of a mystery. Things take a turn however when Madison thinks the prime suspect of her boyfriend's investigation is wrong.

Vallere does a great job at setting up a hard case for Madison because it dredges things up from the past while also causing some conflict in Madison's current relationship. I liked the journey that this mystery forced Madison to take because I think it made her stronger and helped her escape her past. I loved seeing my favorite secondary characters back as well especially Nasty. Overall My Nightmare Is Yours proved to be a great read that I would most definitely recommend. I look forward to reading Madison's next adventure.

My Nightmare is Yours - Book Review

This is a relentlessly gripping thriller that seizes your attention from the very first page and doesn't let go until the final word.

The story plunges immediately into the discovery of Vanessa Wright's body, left in a local park. The discovery is made by Madison Night, who, by a twist of fate, finds herself inextricably linked to the case. As a result, Madison is immediately pulled into the investigation, torn between her own belief about the killer's identity and the swirling, often contradictory, suspicions of others. The narrative masterfully weaves a complex web of deceit, making every character a potential suspect.

The plot is utterly compelling, maintaining a brisk pace and a constant sense of tension. The author’s ability to craft a truly engaging story is evident, and I found myself unable to put the book down, reading the entire novel in a single, focused session. This is a must-read for fans of the mystery thriller genre.

My Nightmare is Yours by Diane Vallere was a fun, entertaining read. Madison Night is such a unique main character with her retro wardrobe and decorating style, and I found her strong, smart, and easy to relate to. I also loved Madison’s adorable dog, Rocky. One of my favorite parts of the book was all the wonderful descriptions of the mid-century furniture, clothes, and other details. It was easy to see that the author did her research.

The mystery kept me engaged with a couple of twists, plenty of suspects, and a satisfying ending. I always enjoy whodunits that are harder to solve, and this one definitely kept me guessing. The story moved at a quick pace and never felt slow. Even though this is the thirteenth book in the Madison Night Mysteries, it can still be read as a standalone. That said, I think this series would be even more enjoyable read from the beginning. My only complaint is that it ended too soon.

Madison Night is such an interesting main character. She is an older woman, a successful business owner and she looks like Doris Day. Her business reflects her interest in all things from the Mid-century Modern era. In this latest installment she is hired to transform a 1950s ranch into a retro recording studio by a former client who happens to be her friend's ex-husband and a friend of her boyfriend. Things get more complicated when a murder occurs and her client is the main suspect. I like how the story unfolds and the mystery had plenty of twists to keep me guessing. This is book 13 in the series, but there is enough backstory sprinkled throughout so that you can pick it up as your first read in the series. I guarantee that after reading it you'll want to go back and read the rest of the books in the series.

My gosh was this a juicy one. Like spill the tea girlfriend " , if you know what I mean.

It was so cool and easy to read, but I ate it up like chocolate cake. Madison is my hero most of the time, but sometimes I say " whoa girl, what are you thinking, and " have you lost yourmind?"

The storyline is so fast paced, it seemed the story was over, and I had just begun it. I got lost in it, and I loved that feeling. This author was a wizard with red herrings and possible suspects along the way. I'll admit I was clueless and kept changing my mind, and I was still wrong, but satisfied with the outcomes.

Madison Night is my favorite cozy mystery heroine. A doppelganger for Doris Day who runs a fabulous Mid-Century Modern design business, Madison has heart, strength, and a strong sense of truth. She has a mystery to solve and a mid-century recording studio to create, relationships to maintain, and personal growth to experience. I love her and her people (and dog!) and the stories in her world. Another winner!

I’ve been reading this series since the get go and I love it more with each and every entry. Madison Night is my kinda gal and this entry was super for me. With a friend on the suspect list, it makes this one even mor personal for her.

Over the years we’ve watched Madison’s life evolved and I couldn’t enjoy that more! It really makes my heart happy to see her life progress and move forward with each new entry. But it’s her style and sleuthing that brings me back for more each time.

My Nightmare is Yours is Book 13 in The Madison Night Mysteries by Diane Vallere. I thought that the story was fun with a 1950s decorator. The characters have a history with each other so it made sense that Madison was designing a1950 ranch house into s recording studio. BUT, the death of pop singer, Vanessa, was not on the plans. I found this story to be very enjoyable. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.

This is a wonderful addition to the Madison Knight Mystery series. The author will quickly draw you in and keep you on the edge of your seat in anticipation. One of the things I love most about this series is how real Madison is. She is not written as an over the top, too stupid to live caricature like in some other series I have read. The author endeavors to grow Madison and have her keep evolving. This is one of the many things that keeps me coming back to this series. It's a great story.

Excellent! It is always interesting to see how Madison Night's relationships have developed and changed throughout this sereis. Madison and her friends are portrayed very realistically, evolving with each book, even if there are a lot of dead bodies for her and Tex to work through.
"I caught a body today," Tex said. "My main suspect is [Madison's] new client."
"Do you two know how to exist without chaos?" She asked. Rhetorically, I assumed.
