This searing romantasy and heart-stopping follow-up to Her Hidden Fire finds Éadha a desperate fugitive, hopelessly torn between fear and defiance, human and dragon . . . and Ionáin and Gry. Each impossible choice will take her further down a path from which she may never return.
Éadha is on the run, having narrowly escaped the cruel grip of the Master Channellers. Relentlessly hunted, she is pushed to the very edge of her world—a place of ancient magic and long-held secrets where she must create a new life for herself in ways she never imagined.
Ionáin is forced to come to terms with the fact that he has no power, nor did he ever. Imprisoned deep in the Fodder holds, he faces the stark reality of what it means to be an enemy of the Masters as he tries to make sense of his future . . . with or without Éadha.
Gry finds himself walking a dangerous line between protecting his Family’s secret legacy and being true to his feelings for Éadha. With his newly revealed powers, he must train with the Masters he despises and find some way to destroy the very system that makes him elite—before that system can destroy Éadha.
Told from three perspectives, Her Rising Flame is a whirlwind sequel of world-shattering secrets, wrenching heartache, and the terrible consequences of power.
Clíodhna O’Sullivan is a writer based in Co. Louth, Ireland. She works part-time as a legal counsel. In the last few years, she has taken part in several writer events, including as a panel moderator at a Terry Pratchett conference in DCU and panellist at the Cymera festival in Edinburgh. She’s reasonably fluent in German and plays in a band, Molasha (you can find them on Spotify!). She is married with three children, one of whom is autistic, as well as far too many cats and a dog.
A little slower than the first, but still as enjoyable.
Following on the heels of her grand escape from Lambay Island, Éadha of Ailm must seek the truth of her gifts from the mysterious, and dangerous, dragon allies to stay alive and overthrow the cruel masters who rule the world.
This is an immensely enjoyable sequel, if a little slow in the middle and needing a tighter voice. The two additional POVs really help to flesh out the world by showing us how the Channeller system works from multiple ranks within. Meanwhile, Gry is now a Channeller, and must secretly gather allies, like Ailbhe, Éadha's rival Keeper dormmate, and Linn, the only other female Channeller, and Ionáin has become Fodder, imprisoned beneath the stronghold so he can be drained of his life force. Of all the POVs I think we should've seen more of him, especially as Fodder. The other characters in his POV are given only one scene of real bonding between them before they're never seen again. Ironically this is in counter to one of the morals of the story: that using people for such means is starkly dehumanising, and yet, as we don't get to meet the Fodder properly, they end up becoming plot devices anyway.
All that said, I had a fun time with this one. I would be interested to know where the third book is going, because this one ties up a lot of the threads pretty well (besides the romance haha).
WILL I READ ON? Yes.

Her Rising Flame by Cliodhna O'Sullivan Her Hidden Fire #2 Fantasy NetGalley eARC Pub Date: Nov 3, 2026 Penguin Young Readers/Viking Books Age: 16+
Eadha is running from the Master Channellers, knowing that if they catch her, she is dead. But the places she thought were home or safe, hurried her away to protect both them and her. Her last choice is the islands at the edge of the world.
Finding out he has no powers, Ionain is imprisoned as Fodder, at the mercy of the Weavers and the Masters in the castle above, and he knows his time is limited.
Believed innocent; victim of Eadha's attack, Gry now must train as a Channeller to keep protecting his family's legacy, and hide his true feelings for Eadha while listening to the Masters plot her destruction.
This is the second and final book of the series and picks up after the previous book, though it lacks a decent recap. There is some spaced here and there, like when a character is brought up, but without an earlier backstory, that person is a little vague. A nightmare of said person while Eadha is sleeping would be a great place to add something like that, and would give her, the person, and the 'trauma' depth.
I'm also not a big fan of multiple perspectives, and this one has three, but the chapters are titled with which character's POV it is, so that helps, but sometimes there's a blur, as if the author forgot who they were writing about.
But this story was great! It moved along at a good pace and kept to the plot and storyline while adding more depth to the characters, magic, and history of the world. I will admit that I was a little disappointed with the... spoiler... Sure, it made sense and added to the magic/history/drama/'war', but it felt a bit too much, and with a side of eww.
The other... spoiler... could have been a little more descriptive, more this and that.... to really put things in motion and give it that jolt readers crave. But instead, the action wasn't very detailed; feeling hurried, and then dropped and flatlined.
There are a lot of class differences: rich/poor, and the rich bullying and controlling/sacrificing the poor, violence, and, of course, there had to be adult content. It didn't go far, but it still pushed the boundaries, so it's not suitable for readers under sixteen. (It is sad that adult content is added to books that could really give younger readers a feeling for empathy, something that I think is missing, but sex sells.)
Overall, great story/series!

First of all, thank you to Penguin Young Readers Group and NetGalley for the opportunity to ARC read Her Rising Flame.
There's always a little bit of nervousness going into a sequel after loving the first book. Thankfully, Her Rising Flame exceeded every expectation I had.
I genuinely could not put this book down. I read the entire thing in a single day because every time I thought I'd stop, another chapter pulled me right back in. It's one of those sequels that constantly gives you just one more thing to discover.
One of the biggest strengths this time around is the addition of multiple points of view. Instead of simply making the cast larger, each perspective adds something meaningful to the story. It gives a much broader understanding of the world, the conflict, and the impossible decisions every character is forced to make. I found myself equally invested no matter whose chapter I was reading.
I also loved how much bigger everything felt. The mysteries introduced in the first book begin to unravel, long-held beliefs are challenged, and pieces of the history finally start falling into place. Every revelation made me even more excited to see where the trilogy is headed.
The character growth was another standout. Everyone is pushed outside their comfort zones, and watching them evolve because of those experiences made the emotional moments land even harder. There were several twists I didn't see coming, and I loved how naturally earlier plot threads came back into play.
As for the romance... let's just say this book completely messed with my loyalties. I started out convinced I knew exactly who I was rooting for, but by the final page I wasn't nearly as certain. The relationships become far more layered, and I'm now fully invested in seeing how everything unfolds in the final installment.
If I had one small critique, it's that the middle slows down a little compared to the fast-paced beginning and ending. Even so, I never lost interest because every quieter moment was building toward something worthwhile.
Overall, this is exactly the kind of sequel I hope for. It doesn't simply continue the story—it expands it in every possible way. Bigger stakes, stronger character development, fascinating world-building, and enough twists to keep me completely hooked. I finished this book even more invested in the series than I was after Book One, and now the wait for the finale begins.
Her Rising Flame by Cliodhna O'Sullivan ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨ Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Young Readers Group for the eARC!
Her Rising Flame picks up right where we left off, with Éadha on the run from the Master Channellers. Before fleeing, she meets with Ionáin to not only confess her feelings but also reveal the terrible thing she did with his powers. Ionáin struggles to come to terms with life without his abilities while also being viewed as an accomplice to Éadha's actions. Loyalties within his family are tested, and true colors begin to emerge as the consequences of the previous book continue to unfold.
As for Gry, he is quickly learning that being part of the First Family means every move he makes is watched and scrutinized. Walking the fine line between appearing loyal to the Master Channellers while hiding his feelings for Éadha proves far more difficult—and dangerous—than he anticipated.
Having three different perspectives in this installment added a deeper layer to the story than the first book. With the characters spread across different regions of the land, each viewpoint provided new insight into the unfolding events. In book one, we primarily experienced Éadha's frustration and heartbreak as Ionáin seemed hot and cold toward her. This time, however, we gain a much better understanding of Ionáin's perspective, particularly his complicated family dynamics and relationship with his uncle.
Not only do we get to see how Éadha's secret ultimately plays out, but we also witness the repercussions of Gry's own choices and secrets. Watching the consequences unfold from multiple perspectives made the story feel richer and more emotionally impactful.
One element that stood out more prominently in this book was the folklore surrounding Leah. I thought it was a unique and fascinating addition to the worldbuilding that added even more depth to the story. Without giving too much away, I am very intrigued to see where book three takes both the dragons and the evolving folklore.

This is a rare middle book in a trilogy that is better than the first. We pick up exactly where Her Hidden Fire left off with Éadha fleeing to the dragon isles, Ionáin exposed as powerless, and Gry desperately trying to figure out how to save Éadha and keep up his double life for the sake of his family. The introduction of Ionáin and Gry’s POVs helps to balance this book and expands the reader’s understanding of the different dynamics at play, which works well as this one is fairly fast-paced, especially when the dragons are actively involved.
Unlike the first book, I really enjoyed the relationship between all of the main characters. I liked how much Ionáin grows, and I also appreciated that the soft, self-sacrificial core of Éadha’s character, while frustrating, was itself a plot point that hopefully spells out growth for the final novel. I felt that Gry outshone the other two in this book, struggling with his own desires and morals and constantly forced to come up with creative solutions to the constant flow of problems that barge into his path. As a character-focused YA fantasy, I felt satisfied by our main cast and their growth even when the villainy passed firmly into the realm of cartoonish evil.
The passage of time is too fluid, and I found I had to occasionally pause reading to look back at the previous couple of chapters to figure out when exactly the unfolding action was occurring in relation to other events. This is very excusable in Ionáin’s chapters as he spends most of the novel with an increasingly limited ability to accurately assess how much time has passed. It’s less excusable in Éadha’s chapters, particularly in the middle of the novel where her magical growth is the focus. Gry’s chapters are more grounded, and, despite the fact this dude takes massive head and bodily trauma like it’s his job, his POV is the most grounded in the day to day. Overall, this is a great second book, and I will pick up the third one with hopes this will stick the landing.
The first book in the series was one of my top reads of 2025 (I had an ARC of the first book too) and I knew I had to request the second book. One thing that I thought was interesting was the introduction of multiple POVs. Of course, given how the last book ended, multiple POVs were definitely necessary with most of the plot-critical characters being separated. However, I didn't find the POV of Gry to be that compelling or interesting as he was remarkably centered on Éadha.
The first chapter starts of literally where the last book ended, which I think will be nice for people who didn't re-read this book before reading the sequel. However, I did have some trouble remembering some of the names of minor characters from the first book which made the glossary at front useful. The introduction of talking dragons was interesting although I think it would have been better if they remained relatively un-talking like the last book. I also liked how the book dived into the dynamics of the Keepers and how the system was designed to encourage Keepers to be angry at the people rather then those in charge.
The overall story felt a little directionless compared to the first. In the first, the characters had clear goals and motivations set against the backdrop of a magical school. In this one, all of the characters seem to wander around various settings without any concrete plans. While that is more realistic (how exactly are teenagers realistically going to take down an entire system?) it doesn't exactly make for the most compelling story. This book definitely goes more into the world-building which was interesting and answered a lot of questions from the previous book that I had. However, some of it was presented in info-dumps. Overall, this was a good and solid sequel but it wasn't quite as thrilling as the first.
Thank you to NetGalley and Puffin Books UK for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
After giving Her Hidden Fire 4.5 stars, I was eager to dive into book two—and it did not disappoint.
Picking up right where the first book left off, the story immediately throws readers back into the action. This instalment feels much more action-packed, following Eadha, Ionian, and Gry as they fight to survive and navigate the growing conflict around them. As alliances are tested and truths come to light, the question becomes: which side of the fight are you on?
One of my favourite aspects of this book was the addition of multiple POVs. It added so much depth to the story and allowed me to connect with the characters on a deeper level. Seeing events unfold through different perspectives enriched the world-building and made the emotional stakes feel even higher.
The discovery of the true history of the islands and what really happened with the first channellers was fascinating and surprisingly emotional. Long-held beliefs are challenged, secrets are revealed, and the consequences ripple through every character’s journey.
As for the romance and relationships… I went into this book firmly Team Gry, and while I still have a soft spot for him, by the end it wasn’t quite as straightforward as I expected. The characters are layered, their motivations are understandable, and the story does a fantastic job of making you question where your loyalties truly lie.
Overall, this was a compelling sequel that expands the world, raises the stakes, and delivers plenty of action, emotion, and revelations. I can’t wait to see where the story goes next.
After absolutely loving the first book in this series, I was beyond excited to dive into Her Rising Flame and it completely delivered everything I wanted from a sequel and more. Stayed up way too late in the night absorbed in this book! Ciodhna O Sullivan expands the world, the stakes and the emotional depth in such a powerful way. From the very first chapters, I was immediately pulled back into this brutal, dangerous and beautifully imagined world. One of my favourite things about this sequel was seeing the different character journeys unfold. Éadha’s storyline was especially compelling as she struggles to rebuild herself after escaping the Masters, while Ionáin’s chapters added so much emotional weight and complexity to the story. Gry’s internal conflict and growth also made him such an engaging character to follow. The multi POV structure worked brilliantly, giving the story momentum while expanding the worldbuilding and political tension even further. There are so many secrets, betrayals and emotional moments woven throughout the book, and I found myself completely hooked trying to piece everything together. The pacing felt stronger than ever in this instalment, balancing action, emotion and character development perfectly. The dragons, magic system and shifting power dynamics continue to make this series feel incredibly immersive and addictive. This series just keeps getting better, and that ending has left me desperate for the next book already. A fantastic sequel full of heartache, tension and epic fantasy stakes 📚✨
3.5 Stars. A solid follow on from book one that I enjoyed. I found this easy to sit and binge and finish in just a couple sessions. I liked that we had multi character perspectives, it made the plot more interesting as there were lots of different things going on and issues each character were facing. After the cliffhanger ending of book one I was pleased to see we pick straight up where we left off, the stakes still felt high and I enjoyed seeing them navigate the aftermath of the reveal in book one. I enjoyed seeing more of Gry in this book and his background, as well as navigating his feelings towards Eadha. And somehow despite finding Ionian annoying in the first book, seeing him suffering from the consequences in this book did make me fell a little bit sorry for him. I still find the power dynamics and magic system interesting and enjoyed seeing more of how they treated the Fodder. Whilst it didn’t blow me away I did think it was an enjoyable read and I will be picking up the next book.

Review:
Wow. I wasn't expecting any of that at all. I was so shocked with everything happening with Eadha, Ionain, and Gry. They all were dealing with the fall out of the end of the previous book and what came next. I hated Huath and the Masters even more. They were cruel and just evil. The dragons and the whole thing with Leah were fascinating, and I loved learning more. I loved the bond Eadba had with Maelsuin. It was nice to learn more about Gry and his family, and I loved Hera. This was an intense read with everything going on. I felt like something was always happening. I did feel bad for Ionain and what he went through, but I loved how he changed from it all. I did wish for a bit more romance and maybe for Eadha to figure out her feelings, but what was there was nice. I don't know if this is the end or if there is another book. The end seemed a bit open, but if there is, I can't wait. This was a great read, and I hope for more.

I won this ARC in a Goodreads Giveaway for my honest opinion. This book is very well written with a great story plot. There's war, romance, magic, betrayl, and dragons that were once human and transformed. Everything a great fantasy book needs. This story does not disappoint. The ruling overlords are full of a power to drain energy from other human beings. Anyone that doesn't have that power is beneath them. Fuel for their magical power. Also women are to be only servants, they are not allowed to have the same abilities. But a few women do! When one of these women attacks an apprentice for draining a girl to death. She has shown that her abilities are stronger than any master or lord on the island. She flees to save herself. The lies the men tell of her being a traitor and a risk to all on the island is a lie. They weave their own lies for their own personal hate against her. Causing everyone to go to war with the dragons that protect her. Who wins in the end? You'll have to read it and find out. I recommend this one.
Thank you to Netgalley and Penguin Puffin Books for the opportunity to read this ARC.
Well, this was another incredible read from Cliodhna O’Sullivan. Continuing the story from book one, Her Hidden Fire, we follow MFC Éadha, into her journey of discovery, love, loss, magic and lots of dragons! I have fallen in love with this story and its characters. As I said in my previous review of Her Hidden Fire, the magic system in this book is so unique and intriguing it just kept me wanting more. Ionaín’s struggle through grief, loss, and coming to terms with what Éadha had done was so well written and it was heart wrenching to read. His development made this book even better. The love triangle between Éadha, Ionaín and Gry just makes me want book three right NOW so I know who she picks… Gry sacrificing his own love and wants for Éadha because of her love for Ionaín had me in tears. I’m so invested in what happens to these three it is unreal. If you love Irish language, dragons, love triangles and ultimate sacrifice this book is for you!!!
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Random House for the early access to give an honest review.
I could not wait to read Her Rising Flame because I needed to know what happened next! I was so invested in Éadha’s story, as well as Gry and Ionáin’s. Clíodhna created three very different characters that I adored, it was so good seeing the story from each other their perspectives. Every time a word in Irish, or a familiar place name came up, it warmed my heart. I love seeing our language and culture being celebrated and bringing inspiration into the modern fantasy space. Sár-mhaith a Chlíodhna!
I absolutely loved seeing where the story went, and was genuinely gagged when she made that big discovery in the west (iykyk).
This book was filled with tension, yearning, turmoil and war; which to me are all of the ingredients needed for a stellar book.
Another amazing read by Clíodhna and I am so excited to see where the story goes next!
Her Rising Flame is a page turning sequel to Her Hidden Fire. The story picks up right where book one left off and this time the reader gets three different points of views. Eadha is dealing with the fallout of having given her power to Ionain and battling her way off of the islands. Knowing she will be hunted for what she did, Eadha’s first instinct is to warn her loved ones at home, but when that is too late, she decides to head to the islands of the dragons. However, when she gets close to Gry’s home, she decides to take a detour and ask for help where she learns Gry is alive and well. When all avenues are cut off, Eadha goes to the dragons to hide, but the fight is not over yet.
I really enjoyed the book and the tension between Eadha and Ionian and Eadha and Gry is incredible. I’m all for Eadha choosing Gry. I can’t wait to see what book three holds.
This is such an intricately woven story, full of emotional gut punches, interesting commentary on systems of power and oppression, and the vicious cycles we find ourselves in when we try to break out of those.
While many second books struggle to find their voice and have slow pacing, this book hits the ground running and doesn’t let up. It has intrigue, it has politics, it has a beautiful expansion of the world and a fascinating expansion of the lore without ever getting bogged down by info dumps or slow character growth.
I cannot recommend this sequel enough, and I am so grateful to have gotten an ARC sent by the author! I know I’m a little early, buuut when can I get book 3???
I devoured this book in a couple of days. Although it doesn't do justice to compare two magical books, it bears a likeness to Blood over Bright Haven highlighting the insidious price paid by channeling. The underlying moral challenges of each character such as Eadha's revenge arc, Ionain discovering self-worth, learning to trust, Gry's unconditional love, grief, and acceptance pulled this novel to 4.5 stars rounded up.
So happy to get this arc which the author gave to our Bookclub to share. Flew through this book as I couldn’t put it down. I was eager to see where the story would go after the cliffhanger ending of book one and I wasn’t disappointed. This book picks up exactly where Her Hidden Fire ends and with multiple pov’s this time, giving us great insight to the different realities experienced by the Fodder, Keepers and Channellers. Add to this a creative and unique magic system, descriptive world building, romance and a healthy dose of dragons. Can’t wait for more
Second in the series and even better than the first. I loved the characters and their growth and all the twists and turns they went through. Just as you'd accept the fate of one something would happen. My heart would rise and fall and rise again. Such a great series!
I was initially offered both of these books, but just took the first one as I was uncertain. Halfway through I paused and went back to grab the second one because i knew I'd need to read it. I'm so glad I did! I read both in less than 24 hours.
I was given an arc copy of this book and this is my honest review.
Unfortunately I didn't like this second book as much as I liked the first.
Ionáin's point of view just annoyed me. Gry was great as always but his family couldn't seem to make up their minds. The Dragons were also not that great.
I think maybe this should of been a duology as it just felt like a filler book, just setting up the next one.
Thank you to Netgalley, the author and publisher for an eARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This series continues to be a gut punch in the absolute best way. It is everything I love about fantasy, but it also carries such a deep, enduring message of fighting back against injustice. It makes me love the book all the more for how it does not flinch from fighting back against power that seeks to hurt those that do not have it.
I read this within a week of reading the first book in the series Her Hidden Fire.I absolutely loved this as much, if not more than the first. The introduction of multiple POV gave an even greater depth to the story and completely captivated me from start to finish. Waiting impatiently for the next instalment.
Her Rising Flame is an exciting fantasy filled with magic, adventure, and strong character growth. The story is engaging from the start, with plenty of twists and emotional moments that kept me invested. The world-building is rich, and the ending left me eager for more. A great read for anyone who enjoys epic fantasy with heart and high stakes.
Loved the tri perspective of this book reading to what the other characters were thinking I felt like you were there I was lucky enough to get book one in my fairy loot sub so when I saw this couldn't wait to read it can't wait for more
My book club were gifted an ARC copy to share amongst ourselves 🤩
Having only just read book 1 it was amazing to be able to read the second book so soon after. Great to see the characters developing and there was a very unexpected reveal which was chefs kiss! Cant wait to see what happens in book 3.
