'Infused with compassion, warmth and a brilliant sense of humour' Louise Fein

Jane has everything under control. Though her ex-husband has moved an hour away, totally disrupting her daughters' routines, and her mother has died, her publisher has dropped her and her literary agent no longer wants to represent her. She's even organised enough to be able to stand in for an ill friend and teach a residential writing course at a day's notice.

But the last student to arrive, in a flurry of drama and noise, is the person who will bring everything crashing Lucy, the woman who Jane's husband left her for, his second wife. How can the two possibly spend a week together?

But this course could mean a serious boost to the writing career of one of them. How can they not?

As a new reader to Nicola Gill, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but the description sounded entertaining, so I was keen to give it a go!

I really enjoyed the dual narrative and getting to see scenarios from both characters’ POVs. It was interesting to see how they viewed each other and how their perspectives shaped their dynamic.

However, while I found it easy to understand the characters’ thoughts and feelings about each other, I struggled to form a clear picture of each character individually. The story was so focused on their dynamic that I didn’t feel I got to know either of them beyond the surface level, which left me wanting a little more depth.

That said, I enjoyed the setting and plot, and overall, it was an entertaining read. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for something light-hearted, easy to read and perfect for a bit of escapism!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I have adored all of Nicola Gill's books, but this one might just be my favourite yet. Smart and funny, I found it impossible to put down. With twists and turns and no idea how things would be resolved, it was an absolute treat of a read. With a spotlight on the complicated aspects of human nature, and the messy situations we find ourselves in, the novel is infused with compassion, warmth and a brilliant sense of humour. I defy anyone not to love this book!
