Όταν είδα οτι το δεύτερο ποδοσφαιρικο μυστήριο του Φίλιπ Κερ διαδραματίζεται στην Ελλάδα οπου η ομάδα του Σκοτ Μάνσον θα αντιμετωπίσει τον Ολυμπιακό στα προκριματικά του Champions league ,δεν κρατήθηκα και το ξεκίνησα αμέσως με μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον.Στην αρχή μου άρεσε πολύ,είχε πλάκα (εκτός κι αν είσαι γαύρος ),σιγά σιγά όμως αρχισα να στραβώνω με αυτα που λέει για τους Ελληνες,αν και με πολλά απο αυτά που λέει δεν μπορώ να διαφωνήσω.Αλλά ρε φίλε ,βρωμάνε τα χνώτα μας?Είμαστε όλοι τεμπέληδες και ρέμπελοι?Βρωμάνε τα φαγητά μας και οι Αγγλοι που έρχονται εδώ την βγάζουν με χάμπουργκερ?Είναι η Αθήνα γεμάτη πορτοκαλιές και εμείς αφήνουμε τα πορτοκάλια να σαπιζουν στα πεζοδρόμια γιατί είμαστε απολίτιστοι κάφροι?Νεράντζια είναι φίλε μου.Ν Ε Ρ Α Ν Τ Ζ Ι Α.Και την επόμενη φορά που θα μας τιμήσεις με την παρουσία σου να σε τρατάρουμε μερικά αμα θες.Φρέσκα ,κατευθείαν απο το δέντρο.Κι εντάξει δεν είμαστε όλοι ρατσιστές.Κι αμα σε ενοχλούν τα άσπρα και μπλε σπίτια της Πάρου ,τράβα αλλού.Ναι,δεν είχε άλλο χρώμα μπογιά το χρωματοπωλείο.Ουστ.Και να ξέρεις οτι εδω στην Ελλάδα κανένας άντρας δεν λέγεται Μαριλίζα(στην Αγγλια δεν ξέρω τι κάνετε ) .Kι όποιος έχει οξεία αλλεργία στα ρεβύθια δεν κινδυνευει να πεθανει ανα πάσα στιγμή στην Ελλάδα γιατι guess what ΔΕΝ ΒΑΖΟΥΜΕ ΠΑΝΤΟΥ ΡΕΒΥΘΙΑ!Και ναι εμείς εδώ κάνουμε απεργίες γιατι βαριόμαστε να δουλέψουμε αλλά κι εκεί στην Αγγλία μάλλον είχαν απεργία οι επιμελητές οταν ήταν να βγει το βιβλίο σου γι'αυτό είναι γεμάτο λάθη,δεν το έδινες πρώτα σε έναν πειναλέο Ελληνα να του ρίξει μια ματιά?Θα σου έλεγε οτι ο Γερμανός μαλάκας δεν γράφεται έτσι "Germaniká malakas" κι οτι αυτό δεν είναι σωστο "Pósoi Evraíoi ékanes aério símera".Γενικά δεν είναι σωστό να μεταφράζεις απο το google translate και να βάζεις τις φράσεις στο βιβλίο ως ελληνικές.Είναι αστείο!Να πω οτι το βιβλιο το διαβασα στα αγγλικα και πολλες απο τις λεπτομερειες που ειναι λαθος ,πολύ πιθανόν να έχουν διορθωθεί απο τον μεταφραστή.
Στα θετικά του βιβλίου οτι ο συγγραφέας έχει κάνει έρευνα για τους Ολυμπιακούς και εκεί τα λέει ολόσωστα χε χε χε :P Aλλά μετά μου τα χάλασε που είπε τη Λεωφόρο αχούρι που για να μπεις εκεί μέσα πρέπει να έχεις κάνει εμβόλια και οτι βρωμάνε τα αποδυτήρια(που εισαι κυρ Σάββα να τ'ακούσεις χαχαχ).Βέβαια νομίζει ο καημένος οτι θα μπορούσε ποτέ να παιχτεί εκεί οποιοδήποτε ματς με οπαδους του Παο ,του Οσφπ και άγγλους και να βγούνε απο εκεί μέσα όλοι ζωντανοί.Αυτά φίλε μου δεν γίνονται ούτε στα παραμύθια.
Κατα τ'αλλα ηταν όπως και το πρώτο βιβλίο,η υπόθεση λίγο αφελής,η λύση του μυστηρίου έρχεται εύκολα και βολικά και όλα μοιάζουν λίγο χαζά αν τα πάρεις και πολύ στα σοβαρά.
Τελοσπάντων,κακώς το κράζω το βιβλιαράκι.Διασκεδαστικό ήταν,ευχάριστα το διάβασα.Μια χαρά ΒΙΠΕΡ ήτανε! :P 2.5 stars

Ο Σκοτ Μάνσον επιστρέφει - κι αυτή τη φορά "εντός έδρας" για τους Έλληνες φανς του, μιας και το συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο έχει άρωμα άκρως ελληνικό!
Η ομάδα της Λόντον Σίτυ έρχεται να αντιμετωπίσει τον Ολυμπιακό σε ένα κρίσιμο ματς για το Champions League, όμως κανένας δεν μπορεί να φανταστεί τις ανατροπές και τις εκπλήξεις που περιμένουν την αγγλική ομάδα στην Αθήνα, εντός κι εκτός γηπέδου! Δύο ύποπτοι θάνατοι ζητούν απαντήσεις και, προκειμένου να ξεμπερδέψουν με τις Αρχές και να μπορέσουν να επιστρέψουν στη βάση τους το συντομότερο, ο Σκοτ θα ξαναθυμηθεί τον ρόλο του ερασιτέχνη ντετέκτιβ και θα ψάξει μόνος του να βρει την άκρη του νήματος.

O Kerr για μια ακόμα φορά σκοράρει με τη γραφή του, και το βιβλίο αυτό είναι απόλαυση να το διαβάζεις. Όσοι τον γνωρίζουμε καλά ξέρουμε πως ο συγγραφέας αγαπάει τη χώρα μας, αλλά γράφει πάντα αντικειμενικά και "σοβαρά" και παρουσιάζει την εικόνα της Ελλάδας και της Αθήνας όπως ακριβώς είναι, παρόλο που σε πολλούς δεν θα αρέσουν ή θα τους ενοχλήσουν πιθανότατα τα όσα διαβάσουν. Η εικόνα της χώρας μας είναι αρνητική σε όλους τους τομείς, αλλά πέρα για πέρα πραγματική. Οικονομική ανέχεια, απεργίες, δωροδοκίες, στημένα ματς, πόρνες, άνθρωποι πρόθυμοι να κάνουν τα πάντα για το χρήμα, νεοναζί, ρατσιστές... Ας είμαστε ειλικρινείς, αυτή είναι η εικόνα της χώρας μας τα τελευταία χρόνια και οπωσδήποτε δεν μπορεί να κατηγορήσει κανείς τον Kerr ή τον κάθε Kerr για προκατάληψη. Βέβαια, μερικές φορές φτάνει στην υπερβολή, όπως στην περίπτωση της Πάρου που την παρουσιάζει ως το τελευταίο κατσικοχώρι της δεκαετίας του '50, με το ίντερνετ να πιάνει μόνο στο ξενοδοχείο της κεντρικής πλατείας! Σε γενικές γραμμές όμως, είναι ενδιαφέρον να διαβάσει κανείς το πώς βλέπει τα πράγματα ένας ξένος συγγραφέας που χρησιμοποιεί ως βασικό σκηνικό του βιβλίου τη χώρα μας. Στα συν του και η ανατροπή στο τέλος, η οποία μας αφήνει μια αγωνιώδη γεύση για το τι θα γίνει στο τρίτο βιβλίο της σειράς.

Το βιβλίο το συστήνω στους λάτρεις της αστυνομικής λογοτεχνίας,στους ποδοσφαιρόφιλους -φυσικά!- αλλά και σε όσους θα ήθελαν να διαβάσουν αυτό που είπα παραπάνω,το πώς βλέπει δηλαδή τη χώρα μας ένας ξένος. Για όποιον λόγο και να το επιλέξει κάποιος, νομίζω πως θα είναι αδύνατον να τον απογοητεύσει η επιλογή του!

Κερ στην Ελλάδα της κρίσης. Ωραία γραφή, γενικά καλή αίσθηση της ελληνικής πραγματικότητας (την έζησε έστω για λίγο ή του την περιέγραψαν πολύ καλά), καυστικός σε πολλά σημεία (όμως έχει δίκιο). Κάποια λάθη πραγματολογικά (πορτοκαλιές στους δρόμους αντί για νεραντζιές, ας πούμε) θα μπορούσε να τα αποφύγει αν έδινε το βιβλίο να το διαβάσει ένας κάτοικος της Αθήνας πριν το εκδώσει. Αλλά είναι λεπτομέρεια.
Γενικά ωραίο, page turner αστυνομικό :-)

Ο Scott Manson σε περιπέτειες στην Ελλάδα.Μπάλα,ωραίες γυναίκες,βρώμικα παιχνίδια,ολα αυτά μαζί στο μίξερ.Ο μέγας Kerr μας τα σουρνει για τα καλά και λίγα λέω.Ωραιο βιβλιο για καλοκαιράκι.

Ο καλός μας ο κύριος Κερρ είναι άτακτο παιδί. Αλλά και και ποιος μη άτακτος θα μπορούσε να ξεμπροστιάζει ωμά ότι ναζιστικό ή φασιστικό κυκλοφορεί στον πλανήτη από το ‘30 και μετά; Θέλει ένα θάρρος κι ένα θράσος κάποιες φορές και τον συγχωρούμε που αυτό το δεύτερο τον κατέλαβε κατά κύριο λόγο όταν έγραφε το δεύτερο μέρος των περιπετειών του Σκοτ Μάνσον που διαδραματίζεται στην Αθήνα της κρίσης. Σε πολλά σημεία είχα την εντύπωση ότι διάβαζα την έκθεση ενός σκανταλιάρη αλλά πανέξυπνου μαθητή που παίζει με την υπομονή των δασκάλων του για να δει μέχρι πού φτάνουν τα όριά τους και η αγάπη τους. Γιατί εκτός από όλα όσα περιγράφει για την Ελλάδα της κρίσης υπάρχει και η αντίθετη, η φωτεινή πλευρά την οποία επέλεξε να μην δει καν. Υπάρχουν οι άνθρωποι της γνώσης, της προσπάθειας, οι άνθρωποι που εκδίδουν τα βιβλία του κι εκείνοι που τα έχουν κάνει μπεστ σέλλερ, αν μη τι άλλο. Και υπάρχουν και όμορφα και καθαρά μέρη με την προσωπική προσπάθεια των κατοίκων τους, υπάρχουν οι καθημερινοί ήρωες, υπάρχουν οι πληγέντες που δεν ευθύνονται για όσα συμβαίνουν τώρα στην χώρα. Η έρευνά του λοιπόν είναι ελλιπέστατη είτε ασυνείδητα, που δεν το νομίζω, είτε συνειδητά, καθότι προτιμά να σατιρίζει χοντρά ανθρώπους και πράγματα για να βγάζει χιούμορ και γέλιο σε όσους δεν τους αφορούν τα αστειάκια του. Κι εγώ γέλασα με τα χάλια της σύγχρονης Ρωσίας μέσα από δυο τρία καυστικά σχόλια αλλά το να αφιερώνει ένα ολόκληρο βιβλίο για να περιγράψει το δράμα του σύγχρονου Έλληνα μέσα από απαξιωτικές κρίσεις σε όλα τα επίπεδα, δεν το βρίσκω και πολύ του γούστου μου. Πολλά έγραψα, το βιβλίο δεν είναι και λογοτεχνία για να αναλωθούμε σε μακροσκελείς κριτικές, συμπαθητικούλι θα το έλεγα κι αν δεν ήταν του Κερρ που έχω θαυμάσει από την Τριλογία του Βερολίνου δεν θα του έδινα σημασία.

Segunda entrega de la serie de Scott Manson, tras “ Mercado de invierno ” (January Window). Sigue los pasos del manager del ficticio club de la Premier League londinense. Un equipo que no deja de meterse en problemas. En la primera entrega trataba del asesinato del anterior manager del equipo, un crimen que será brillantemente resuelto por Manson. En esta nueva entrega, el equipo sufre la muerte súbita de un jugador en pleno partido de Champions contra un equipo griego, en territorio heleno. Esta sospechosa muerte se ve entrelazada con el hecho de que dicho jugador pasó la noche previa del partido con una prostituta, la cual también aparece muerta a las pocas horas de la anterior desgracia. Todo ello lleva a las autoridades griegas a “secuestrar” al equipo londinense, no permitiéndoles la salida del país hasta que se resuelva el doble misterio. Esto llevará inexorablemente a Scott Manson a volver a meterse en líos, intentando por su cuenta y riesgo averiguar la verdad, enemistándose con las propias autoridades helenas y con el propietario de su equipo.
La novela, sin tener la calidad de la serie de “Bernie Gunther” escrita por el mismo autor, mantiene el interés. Eso sí, te tiene que gustar mucho el fútbol para poder disfrutarla, ya que los pasajes sobre dicho mundillo son abundantes. En segundo lugar, conviene que no seas un lector griego, ya que aprovechando la caótica situación por la que atraviesa el país, el autor no ceja en su empeño de sacar a relucir toda la mala imagen que, por desgracia, el resto de los europeos seguimos teniendo también del país fundador de la democracia. Algunos comentarios, aunque puede que tengan razón, pueden resultar hirientes para los propios griegos, que en esta entrega no salen muy bien parados.
Dicho esto, y teniéndolo siempre en cuenta, la novela me resultó interesante y entretenida. Como anécdota, resaltar que a Manson le ofrecen la oportunidad de dejar el club londinense para venir a España y fichar por el Málaga. Pero eso forma parte de la trama de la tercera entrega, “False nine”.

Segundo libro protagonizado por Scott Manson, un entrenador de fútbol de un equipo ficticio de la liga inglesa, que se ve envuelto; o mejor dicho, se envuelve él mismo en la investigación de lo que acontece a los miembros del equipo.
Es una historia muy bien narrada, siempre en primera persona por parte de Scott. Conocemos con detalle lo que le va pasando, a él y al resto del equipo.
Desmenuza los entresijos del fútbol europeo de alta competición, a nivel de organización como de las directivas de los equipos implicados; sin olvidar mencionar como debe enfrentarse el entrenador a sus jugadores para que se mantengan en forma.
Además, entre toda la ficción, explica anécdotas sobre personas actuales y reales del mundillo.
Es un libro que me ha gustado, al igual que el primero cuando lo leí... Pero no lo recomiendo si no eres aficionado al fútbol, ya que puede llegar a hacerse un poco pesado.

Kitabın başlığı, Maradona 'nın 1986 Dünya Kupası 'nda İngiltere'ye attığı ilk golü üzerine yaptığı yorumunu getirdi herkes gibi benim de aklıma: " Biraz Maradona 'nın kafası, biraz Tanrı 'nın eli." demişti çünkü ünlü futbolcu:))
Yazarın buradan yola çıkarak orijinalinde de aynı başlığı kullanıp kurguladığı ikinci Scott Manson kitabında bu şekilde atılan bir gol olmasa da kitap bitince başlığın ne kadar acı verici şekilde cuk oturduğunu fark ediyorsunuz.

Yunanistan'ın yakın geçmişte yaşadığı borç batağı döneminde deplasman maçı için buraya gelen Scott Manson ve takımının başına gelenler futbolun kirli yüzüne ayna tutarken, Olympiakos ve Panathinaikos arasındaki ezeli rekabeti, dosyası henüz kapanmamış seri cinayetleri, ırkçılığı, grevlerle hak arayan kadim bir halkın yaşadıklarını öğrenmek balyoz gibi çarpıyor okuyucuyu. İlk kitaptan daha çok beğendim ve dört dörtlük bir politik polisiye olarak ülkemizde daha çok okur tarafından hak ettiği ilgiyi görmesini temenni ediyorum.

Anlatıcı yine Scott Manson ve çevirmen Cem Demirkan. Su gibi akıcı, heyecan temposunun ve mizahın karanlık olayları dengelediği serinin son cildine içim buruk başlıyorum; keşke devamı olsaydı diyerek...

This book feels like it has been written by a different Philip Kerr than the one who wrote the Bernie Gunther stories. As a crime novel this book is pretty average. What is interesting is the description of the football world from the inside as it looks like PK knows this world very well. He certainly spends a lot of time to talk about it in the book; a bit too much for my taste as I am not a big football fan, an understatement. I also liked the disparaging comments about the Greeks with which I totally agree.

I only have a passing interest in football and now that the English Premier League is no longer available on free to air TV in Australia, I see very little of it. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed Hand of God. The protagonist is the coach of a fictious London football team and one of its players dies on the pitch while the team is playing in Greece. Coach, come sleuth, Scott Manson is on the path to solve the puzzle/crime. Now Scott is an interesting character. He is multilingual, has a total understanding of football, knows Greek history and mythology and is up there with Sherlock Holmes and Jack Reacher, with more of the Reacher about him.
Kerr is a talented writer, full of illustrative metaphors and humours analogies. He was a football tragic and would have done much research before writing this book. Although fictious, Kerr blends many real characters, incidents and situations into the novel.
Kerr writes in a gossipy style, and I am not sure if he has many Greek and FIFA fans among his audience. I found the book highly entertaining, full of a rich array of characters, African and Russian footballers, wealthy football club owners, strongly opinionated coaching staff, high class hookers and the destitute country of Greece.
I did find the “evidence” somewhat contrived and the finish a little hard to believe. What coach would leave the dugout when his team is on the verge of a revenge victory?
The title comes from an incident in a 1986 World Cup game between Argentina and England where Maradona went to head a goal but used his hand. There have been a few incidents where young fit footballers have collapsed on the field.

Φανατικός αναγνώστης των περιπετειών του Μπερνι Γκουντερ θεωρησα αυτονόητο να το διαβάσω.
Δυστυχως απογοητευτηκα για 2 λόγους:
1. Ο Κερρ δεν καταφερνει να δημιουργήσει μια ατμόσφαιρα αναλογη με αυτή του μεσοπολέμου που επικρατεί στα αλλα βιβλία με εξαίρεση ισως τους φίλους του ποδοσφαίρου που εχουν την εντύπωση οτι βιώνουν μια πραγματική εμπειρία για το τι συμβαίνει στα μεγαλα κλαμπ. Επίσης βρηκα λιγο αδυναμη την πλοκη σχετικα με την αιτία θανατου του παίκτη.
2. Το βιβλίο βρίθει ανακριβειων σχετικά με την νεοελληνική πραγματικότητα, την ελληνική ιστορία αλλα και την νεοελληνική νοοτροπία. Η Αθηνα λεει είναι γεματη πορτοκαλιες, η Σοφοκλέους ειναι τιγκα στα μπουρδελα, στη ναυμαχία της Σαλαμίνας χρησιμοποιηθηκε υγρο πυρ, το χουμους ειναι ελληνικο εδεσμα και τρωμε πολλα ρεβυθια, η πορνεια εχει αυξηθεί δραματικά λογω κρίσης και το πολυ ωραίο'' οι ελληνες εφευηραν τα πισοκωλλητα και τις πιπες''.
Φιλοτιμη η προσπαθεια αλλα πιστευω οτι η έρευνα του ήταν ελλιπής και σε ορισμενα σημεία προκαλεί γέλιο, ομως σε κάθε περίπτωση προσέγγισε αρκετά τις ζωωδεις γηπεδικες συμπεριφορές ορισμένων συνανθρώπων μας.
Οι παραπάνω ανακρίβειες μου ενεβαλαν υποψίες σχετικά με την ακρίβεια των ιστορικών στοιχειων της σειρας Μ. Γκουντερ.
Δεν ξερω αν αυτη η σειρα θα μακροημερευσει και δεν είμαι σιγουρος οτι το θελω.

Birinci kitaptan cok daha basarili. Yunan futbolu ve iki buyuk rakip hakkinda cok ilginc bilgilerle dolu bir dedektif romani. Scott Manson Turkiye'de nasil taninmiyor ve bu kitaplar okunmuyor inanamiyorum. Philip Kerr gercekten cok basarili.

This is the second novel in Philip Kerr's Scott Manson series. Manson is the manager of London City F. C. and the team are in Athens to play a Champion's League tie against Olympiakos when during the match their star player collapses and dies. It subsequently turns out that he was also in the company of a call girl who is also found dead, weighed down at the bottom of the harbour. As a consequence, the whole City team are considered suspects and are refused exit back home by the authorities until the matter is resolved. Because of the slow pace and apparent ineptitude of the Police enquiry Manson decides to do a bit of digging into the crime himself and starts to uncover a lot more than he bargained for.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, as I really like the main character, Scott Manson, whose character has developed from the first novel. He is part black and part Scottish and I have a mental image of him as a cross between Chris Kamara, Graeme Souness and Jose Mourinho ! I love all the football anecdotes both factual and fictional that he tells and he's not afraid to express his views on modern day football. The setting of this novel is also very topical considering the current goings on in Greece and the nation's financial problems play a big part in the background of the story. The novel also touches on other relevant topics such as FIFA corruption, African Soccer Academies and betting syndicates.
A football manager turned amateur detective may be a bit far fetched but I think the first two novels in the series have been great fun, especially if you're a big football fan like myself. Roll on the next in the series, False Number 9, which is due later this year.

Das Millieu ist interessant und es ist spannend. Manchmal habe ich den Eindruck, der Kriminalfall ist nur der Aufhänger um Kerrs Gedanken über Fußball und die Welt zu transportieren. Er will manchmal einfach zu viel, will zuviel Recherche-Material und Wissen unterbringen. Den Klassiker der schulischen Aufsatzbewertung "Weniger wäre mehr gewesen" muss ich ihm unter das Ende des Romans schreiben.
Der hartgesottene, aber aufrechte Detektiv in einem Geschäftsmillieu, das sich nicht um moralische Fragen kümmert, und einem korupten Umfeld. Die Schwarze Serie auf das Fußballgeschäft übertragen. Die Gegenspieler sind unsympathisch da hat Kerr es sich zu einfach gemacht, ebenso bei der Namensgebung mancher Figur. Er mag Deutschland, finde ich sympathisch, aber ich kann auch verstehen, wenn die griechische Leserschaft das Buch nicht mag.
Die kriminellen Machenschaften, die zu den zwei Toten führt, sind wahrhaft abgefeimt. Ich werde das nächste wieder zu einem Roman um Bernie Gunther greifen, fürs erste war das genug Fußball-Thrill.

Μεγάλη απογοήτευση. Είχα αποφασίσει να του βάλω 3, μέχρι που αποκαλύφθηκε ο τρόπος που πέθανε ο Μπεκίμ. Προσπερνάω όλες τις ανακρί��ειες σε ο,τι αφορά την Ελλάδα (οίκοι ανοχής στη Σοφοκλέους, υγρό πυρ στη ναυμαχία της Σαλαμίνας, πορτοκαλιές στους δρόμους της Αθήνας, στην Πάρο έχει σήμα μόνο σε ένα ξενοδοχείο κλπ), αλλά η ιστορία με την αλλεργία είναι ίσως από τα χειρότερα plot twist που έχω διαβάσει.
Εντωμεταξυ ο Kerr έχει γράψει βιβλιαρες, πιο πολύ μοιάζει με βιβλίο που γράφτηκε από έφηβο εθισμένο στο ποδόσφαιρο.

Inteligente mezcla de fútbol y crimen, mejor dicho, asesinatos, que el fútbol ya tiene bastante crimen por si mismo. Escrito con agilidad se lee de un tirón. Quizás no sea el libro más sesudo e intelectual del mundo pero desde luego es una novela que se lee con alegría y con ganas de coger un nuevo, y corto, capitulo. ideal para desintoxicar después de lecturas más densas.

An awesome addition to the Scott Manson series. The comments about Greece although a bit exaggerated are rooted to reality. The writer aspires a feeling of helplessness throughout the story, which is even better portrayed at the end. The writer had me hooked from start to finish and I cannot wait to read the third book. I really recommend it both to football fans and crime genre fans.

Scott Manson, acting manager of Premier League football club, London City, is back, following his appearance in Kerr's previous novel, 'January Window', in which he investigated the murder of his predecessor in that role.

In this return fixture, Manson's team find themselves playing in Greece against Olympiacos, battling to qualify for the riches offered by the European Champions' League. Kerr is probably best known for his series of novels featuring German private eye Bernie Gunther, set before, during and after the Second World War. Those books have received considerable critical acclaim, not least because of Kerr's attention to detail. Those close observational skills are present here, too, despite the vastly different context.

London City's visit to Athens is not a happy one. Even before they fly out to Greece, the team is brought down a peg or two following defeat in its first fixture in the Premiership by newly promoted Leicester City. If the book were just being published now, there would be nothing odd about that, as Leicester currently sit on top of the Premier League, though such an eventuality would have seemed utterly implausible a year ago when the book came out. [Sorry about that, but as a Leicester fan, who is still waiting for the bubble to burst, I couldn't resist emphasising that aspect!]

Right from arrival in Athens the team finds itself plagued with misfortune. There are tensions, both racial and religious. Within the team, and the players are met with waves of resentment from the fanatical Olympiacos fans. Kerr is sensitive to prevailing context here, and on the plane Manson lectures his players about the likely response of the austerity-ridden Greeks to any of the conspicuous expenditure so often associated with Premier League footballers. All that fades into relative insignificance, however, when London City's star striker suffers what appears to be a heart attack in the opening minutes of the game. This sparks a series of events that result in the whole team being detained in Athens, unable to return to London before various investigations can be completed, though these are hampered by the plethora of strikes and industrial action being taken by different elements of the Greek authorities.

Kerr has clearly done his research (I understand that he is an avid Arsenal fan), and he offers lots of observations about the game, both in England and in Greece. He also uses the opportunity to launch a few barbs at FIFA and UEFA, the worldwide and European administrative bodies, whose ludicrous attempts to whitewash the endemic corruption certainly merit any ridicule that might be launched at them.

This was faced paced and gripping, though I found it lacked the engagement of 'January Window' - part of the appeal of that book had been the fact that it was the first decent thriller set in the world of football that I had read. Now some of the novelty has gone.

Being Greek surely affected my rating. I can tell the the late author loved our country and felt frustrated by the state of affairs at the time of writing, however the country is unfairly presented as belonging to the third world: corruption everywhere, the public sector paralyzed due to continuous strikes, the head of police is a neo-nazi and almost all Greek characters have skeleton's in the closet.

In addition, many Greek character names are wrong. For example one Olympiakos football player's name is Mariliza, which is a female name in Greece and elsewhere.

On the plus side, the author has definitely has done his local research, as most locations are described very accurately, including restaurants, hotels, etc with the notable exception of Paros, a very popular island, which is described as a primitive location without GSM coverage or Internet connectivity.

Other than that, even though the book reads easily the plot is ridiculous and leads to a disappointing end.

Not in par with the Bernie Gunther novels and I will not be reading the other two books in the series.

This is a good book for a vacation read or just some relaxing.
It is a good book, but that's all that's to it, it isn't over the top great but it also isnt bad.

I liked that I did not know what happened till it was revealed

But here comes the part I really did not like, caution spoiler:

I really do not know a lot about the world of football,apart from the rules of the actual game, so maybe this is more common then I would expect, but that one of the players payed an escort girl to spend time with Scott Manson just gave me the ick, espacilly considering he has a girlfriend. Later in the book she (the girlfriend) says how she wouldn't have a problem with him being with other girls, after everything already took place. Making it worse was how random it seemed to the situation they were in at that moment, which also might be because this overall is really not my jam.

A fun, entertaining read, especially if you are into football and whodunnits ;
It is lighter than any Bernie Gunther's novels , Scott Mason is a less complex character than Bernie, but Philip Kerr seems to be enjoying writing this book. That joy or fun comes across well in some of the scenes but especially in Scott's comments on football, Greece , football owners and players, and actually everything Scott has a comment about. Any book where you can read " what I was now looking at was a perfect geometry of flesh and high heels that Euclid never dreamed of - for which the only algebraic formula could be S=EX² " ......... well do I need to say more than you have to read the rest of the book?

Hand Of God is the second football novel. I can see this novel being quite popular. The Novel Hands Of God A Scott Manson thrilller is an international best seller. This novel is a gripping whodunit set in the world of football. A London City player collapes in a crucial match in Athens. A heart attack? Or something more sinister? Scott Manson must find the truth before the rest of the team is in danger.

Better than the first book in the series - but only just! The plot was interesting … until it came to the conclusion where parts were very weak - would somebody commit suicide by drowning?? Still, onto book 3 in the hope that the improvement continues and allows me to give it 4 stars.
