She had been the famous, sought-after teenage star of her generation. But like every star, she was destined to fall. While doing a kidnapping scene for her latest movie, no one expected she would be gone for good. When she didn't return after the last take, everyone thought she was kidnapped. When she didn't return after a few hours, a manhunt followed. When she didn't appear for days, people started to panic. Weeks followed and people mourned her death. What they don't know is that she is very much alive. She is scared. And she is waiting for the perfect escape.
Janelle Ruiz works as a nurse in Bacolod City. She likes the rain, jazz, and freshly brewed coffee. When she's not writing, she spends her time reading inspirational, suspense, and psychological thriller books. She dreams of becoming a forensic psychologist, but as of now, being one of the most amazing criminal profilers in her dreamland is enough. Apart from dreaming, reading and watching too much suspense/thriller television series and a lot of documentaries, she is also known to most of her personal friends and family as a painter.
4.5 stars. Since, this fantastic book doesn't have a single, actual review, I decided to write my review of 'Saving Hope'. •This review contains spoilers. Read at your own risk.• Also I'm writing on an iPad, which by the way, is an incredibly slow means to write so, you know, I must really like this book to write a detailed review.
{{Excerpt from the book-: "Three women who have been held captive inside a Hispanic neighbourhood in Cleveland, Ohio have finally managed to escape. One of the women finally got her chance to run out of the house and call 911 yesterday with the help of her captor's neighbour. Since then, the story of these three women who have been missing for eleven years has shaken the world. Family, friends, neighbours, --and even the police-- cannot imagine the physical, psychological and sexual torture these women went through all these years."
She watched the news without feeling anything. Three women down, she thought. Three women safe.
Three women finally safe, she chanted in her head, fully aware of his presence. Those three women were not the only ones out there. There were others. Hope was one of them.}}
The story begins as Hope Madden, the once famous superstar daughter of the Oscar-winning actress Gina Madden, who was held captive by her kidnapper Carl, watches the news about three women held captive for years but finally escaped their "prison".
She had a bright future ahead of her but, it all spiralled down as she did her kidnapping scene for a movie. She was fifteen then. However, she ended up being *actually* kidnapped by the extra actor, Carl Briggs, as he successfully drugged her and carried her to his "cave" where he assaulted her for ten years. And everyone, including her manager-mother, watched him fled in his car with her silently.
For ten whole years, he tortured, beat, raped her mercilessly. She and the other girl, Patty, who was kidnapped by him at seventeen, endured all his acts. Though, they were in different rooms, they both managed to stay in contact using their tapping/knocking secret codes and talking through the wall where the camera didn't capture them.
For example :- "five knocks to check if the other was safe to talk and the three rapid ones if one was about to be in trouble. In fact, they were too many they could have a conversation with a series of knocks." and made 'The Plan' to escape the ruthless pedo. that he was. He spied on the girls when he left for work via the security cameras he installed in both their rooms. The girls were also tied to a chain at their ankles restricting their movement.
Patty endured all those years like Hope, but unlike her, she lost her fighting spirit and resolved to kill herself by cutting her wrist using a piece of broken glass window. He made Hope clean up Patty's room and he dumped her body in his garden. A few days later, he bought in, aka kidnapped ten year old Samantha and used her to fulfill his fantasies!!
Opposite to the window inside Hope's room was the window of their newly shifted neighbour, Devin, who has secrets of his own. To Hope, this new neighbour is an added trouble as he seems to be interested in everything she did or whatever that happened in Carl's house as he was skeptical about Carl's story of Hope being his schizophrenic daughter. Little did they know that he, Devin, is about to change everything in this story forever and there were far more troubles lurking ahead.
Phew. That was long. But, quite not ALL that this story has to offer. It's full of twists and turns. And kept me hooked on to read and find what happens next. Some chapters made my heart skip a beat! I was scared! I started HATING Carl and Burton more and more as the story progressed. You'll know who that is(for Burton), once you read. Turns out, he was one of the good guys. :)
I do have some complaints, though. I found some grammatical errors and I could totally guess who was the "Mastermind", almost midway into the story. Also, in the last chapter, all my hopes of Hope and Devin getting married were -Shattered!- :'(
But, this is a good read on the whole. This is the one book that got me hooked on watt pad!
The good thing about greenwriter is that, she is a good romance author but she is better when she is writing a mystery/thriller.
Saving Hope is a story that could make your heart pound as fast at it could. It isn't healthy for your heart because it will make you restless. The turns of events are unexpected and the plot twist is really thrilling.
