Not in a superpower way. More like the people-look-right-through-you-in-the-hallway kind of way.
She’s the girl with the oversized cardigan, random book knowledge, and the uncanny ability to tutor the school’s star quarterback without actually being seen as anything more than helpful. Meanwhile, her aunt and uncle’s beloved small-town bookstore is under threat from a shiny corporate chain, her best friend keeps giving her looks that feel suspiciously loaded, and Homecoming is looming like a glittery reminder that senior year is running out…and she’s never been kissed.
Enter The Cinderella Plot—a wildly popular self-help book promising total transformation in five easy steps. New hair. New confidence. New life. Maybe even… a date.
With nothing to lose (except her dignity), Paisley decides to follow the plan. Because if fairy tales have taught her anything, it’s that invisible girls don’t get happy endings unless they change something first.
But as Paisley starts stepping into the spotlight, she has to ask herself an important question: What if being seen comes at the cost of being herself?
Full of heart, humor, bookish charm, and small-town magic, The Cinderella Plot is a romcom about friendship, first love, faith, and discovering that sometimes the greatest transformation isn’t becoming someone new—it’s realizing you were worthy all along.

This is an AMAZING book about identity!
I’m so happy to see Christian authors risking a genre change and/or writing to engage with a larger demographic. It’s wonderful to have an established author publish a book that’s available to the YA audience AND that aligns with Christian values. There is so much available to attract our teens’ attention these days, and knowing that there are engaging books that offer clarity, encouragement, and aid in navigating friendships, forging their identity, and discovering their purpose will put parents’ minds at ease.
I have no doubt that The Cinderella Plot will be a well-loved and widely received story as it’s told in such an authentic voice and centered around identity and warns us about the voices we choose to listen to.
I loved the references to Cinderella, Queen Esther and absolutely lost it (sobbing) at the holding out the sneaker scene!
How wonderful for young adults to have a book that focuses on having the courage to be themselves. I also think it’s important to show that disagreements happen in all kinds of relationships and Basham reminds us that “it’s what you do after the fight that matters.”
I was gifted this copy and was under no obligation to provide a review.
Wow this book. To be honest I’ve been avoiding writing this review because I know it will be triggering but I also want to just spill a bit of my heart on here. This book. It didn’t feel like a book. It brought me back to the most senestive times in my life in public school. And it lightly dabbed a little wound that had been leaking for a little while. Paisley hit home, she reminded me of little me, trying to do anything to fit in…even lose her friends, family, and self. I wanted to climb into those pages just like I could climb back into time and tell those little girls you belong and are beautiful safe soothed and held right and just as you are.
It stressed me out to be honest seeing Paisley make all the transformations and it physically pained me. But I knew how realistic firsthand it was. It was painful but how much the more beautiful when she realized who she truly was. That she mattered to God, herself, and the real people that mattered the whole time. This story was beautiful, it prodded and shed light and softly caressed a wound that had been opened by the cruelty of the world to a little girl who just wanted to be loved.
I loved this story, it was beautiful it was heartwarming heart wrenching and aching. But it was also beautiful and relatable and huggable and funny and adorable. I will never forget this novel. And I’m definitely hoping to pass this down to a young teen someday. This book was just that, powerful and simple…moving and profound yet silly and literary. I adore this book. It has a special place in my littler heart.
Please go read this. And when you’re done pass it on to a young adult, they really might need it. 🤗🥰🥺
I wish I'd had books like this to grow up with! What a great encouragement for readers (young and otherwise). These characters are seriously adorable and relatable.
I was honored to read an early draft of this story. The opinions expressed are my own.
THIS! THIS BOOK! This is the type of YA book I would have loved to read back in middle school/high school. This has a great story, and even a better message that young girls should hear! I thought this was such a cute read! All the book and movie quotes and references were great!
Ohh and at Ch. 14, when Aunt Diane wants to watch a certain movie with her? I guessed the movie correctly! Just had to add that little piece of trivia 😂
This is a great book for anyone, but a MUST READ for your teenager!
“You don’t need to be anyone other than who you are. At least, not for me.”
💙Characters!! 💙
Paisley: The fmc and my book bestie! I LOVED this girl! (Not like that) She is so freakin sweet and book obsessed! She's shy, silent, and loves her cardigans. lol
Chris: THIS BOY!!He is so perfect for Paisley and I'm so happy he finally admitted he had feelings for her!! He is so sweet and caring I love him so much!
✨Thoughts! ✨ OH.MY WORD! This book was the best read I have read this year! Like Paisley I went through a rough time where I wanted to change me so I could be friends with someone. Even though I tried to change my style I could never change who I was in the inside. Paisley finds a book in her aunt and uncle's bookstore called The Cinderella Plot that gives you step-by-step instructions that will transform you into a new person people notice. Paisley decides to try it out. Suddenly boys are talking to her, people are staring, and Chris her best boy-friend starts acting weird about it. In the end Paisley ends up exhausted at having to act and during her Bible reading and Chris's words she discovers she is perfect the way she is and God created her just how he wanted! I also was so excited to learn CHRIS LIKED HER WAY BEFORE HER "TRANSFORMATION"!! I love how this was a Christian YA romance!
"Kisses are magnificent, but hugs should never be underrated."
🥳Ending! 🥳 READ THIS! I've been meaning to write this review for so long! I could write so much more than this! Like 12 full pages LOL! I'm defiantly going to re-read this very soon! I hope you enjoyed this review! 😁 Bye!!👋
"And maybe that’s the best plot of any story. Not the one where you transform into someone perfect, but the one where you find the courage to show up as yourself—and discover you were enough all along."

The cover is adorable and I had high hopes for this one! But I have a lot of mixed feelings about this book. It had such potential and could’ve been much better. I really liked Paisley at the beginning. She reminded me of myself. But then when she started to change, I really didn’t like her as much. She was really dumb at times and automatically assumed things. I didn’t care for the love square or whatever either. Chris, well, I just didn’t really like him. I know that he was trying to protect Paisley, but he came off as controlling and possessive. It wasn’t until the end where he got a lot better. The amount of times Chris and Paisley fought was giving me whiplash. After a while, I was annoyed by it. I didn’t care for some of the words she used especially in a Christian book. They were unnecessary. The faith content was really good and I wanted more. I like the overall theme. I really liked the Cinderella aspects which is what made me interested in the book in the first place. I loved the Lord of the Rings and Pride and Prejudice references! Overall, this was sadly a miss for me.
Can we just talk for a second about how YA books now are not the same as YA books from 10, 15, 20+ years ago? Which isn't all bad, except the content level that is allowed in YA books. That's not what that genre was originally created for but now it seems like if most mainstream authors want to write a YA book they are told, or expected to have content in it that is not appropriate for that age group (or my age group for that matter - shrugs). I love YA books. Always have and always will. But it's so frustrating to go looking for one at the library or on the shelves at the store and to pick it up only to set back on the shelf. I know not everyone is that way but for me and others who are, I love when I find a well written and clean YA book! And Pepper Basham has written one for us!!! Yay!!!!!
This book was wonderful how it addressed self identity and friendships and loving ourselves and having Faith in a loving God. Such wonderful themes. Paisley is just a darling girl who is happy being herself and has her pals, Chris and Molly, who love her for who she is. They don't expect her to be or do or wear anything that matches everyone else. I really loved their dynamics, even when Paisley is trying to figure life out, they support and love her. Sometimes they get frustrated but they apologize and fix it. I thought it was so great seeing that type of real relationship and how to be healthy in the ups and downs.
I really don't want to spoil anything but just want to say that I thought this book was adorable, heartfelt, full of real life struggles, mistakes, trying to do and be good, setbacks, family and friend struggles, love, forgiveness, family and friend highs, a sweet young love story, and learning to love yourself and being happy with who you are.
So many great lines! I was laughing over and over again. And then I had tears and felt the pain and heartache with Paisley. Being a teenager and figuring out life isn't a breeze. It's full of thorns and pain and stumbling blocks, but so worth making it through with loving yourself and having family and friends by your side!
Content: Clean. This book contains Christian faith elements.
I received a copy from JustRead Tours. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
I am so excited that Pepper Basham is foraying into YA! I loved everything about The Cinderella Plot: the bookish main character, the bookshop setting, the best friends trope... It was clean and it was quirky. It was exactly the kind of YA I'm excited to have my teens read--and that I love to read myself.
Disclosure: I received an early digital review copy courtesy of the author.
Paisley Harper is invisible to her father, and to everyone in her school except her two best friends. She gets ahold of a book called The Cinderella Plot that is all about changing your appearance so that people will notice you. She decides to go all in. Her best friend Chris does not completely care for her transformation and he tells her what he thinks. Problems begin in their relationship.
This was a great book! I think Pepper did a wonderful job with her first go at a young adult book. It is a romance, but it’s also a story about identity, about figuring out not who you are but whose you are. There were just a couple of small issues I had, and they were mostly superficial. There were a few typos I noticed. Another small issue was parts of the book felt slightly unrealistic- but hey it is a Cinderella(ish) story. As a book nerd, I absolutely loved all of the bookish references. Pepper covered all my favorites from Jane Austen to the Hunger Games. She even started with The Great Gatsby- a story I teach every year. There was a bookish reference for almost everyone from LoTR to fairytales. If you don’t like books she referenced some great movies and shows like Star Wars. Disney Princess movies, and even Avatar: The Last Air Bender. The faith content was great as well. It did not feel preachy. I loved that she brought identity back around to God.
If you are looking for a book that your daughter will love that is a romance, but will also help teach her about identity then this is the book for you. If high school angsty characters get on your nerves then this one might get to you.
“ The Cinderella Plot” was a fun YA romcom! Pepper Basham’s usual humor was sprinkled throughout the story. Paisley gets a self help book to gain confidence and become a new and better self. This was an interesting storyline. I enjoyed the movie references made throughout the story. Paisley makes some mistakes and learns some lessons along the way, but most of all finds her self even more confident than before. This sweet Cinderella themed book was mostly predictable but still had me turning the pages. Paisley learns a valuable lesson that most people forget, simply to be yourself and to love yourself for who you are not what others want you to be.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.”
4.5 ⭐️ rounded up. My first, and definitely not my last by Pepper Basham. Honestly, this made me want to binge all of her books. This book truly had such a cozy feeling, but also took on some heavy topics and themes! Not only that, it’s so hard to find a YA book that is truly YA, at least in my opinion and this was exactly that!
I feel like if I were in the YA Age range, which this is marketed for, it would be a favorite read. This is so relatable especially for those in high school. Not only that, the faith elements in this were also absolutely amazing! The romance was just so wholesome! Highly recommend this one! I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
This was ADORABLE, with all the fairy-tale vibes and fun, bookish nerds. This story is perfect for book-loving Christian girls, and I absolutely loved the way it portrayed insecurities and the desire to change oneself to be noticed at school and for external validation. I think it is a really profound read for any teen girl growing up in today's culture.
"Because what's the point of being chosen if you have to become someone else to make it happen?"
As a junior in high school, it was honestly so relatable, and I'm glad I never went down the same path as Paisley; the social media depiction was spot-on. The small-town setting was adorable, with tons of references to movies/books, which I enjoyed, especially the ones to The Great Gatsby and Jane Austen. The faith elements were very well done, and I felt a lot of truth speaking to me from this book, especially regarding heart posture and motive. Plus, I actually couldn't guess the ending in this story (but it was awesome, with all the Cinderella elements).
"If I have to pretend to be someone else to be 'seen,' then those aren't the people I need seeing me."
And for all my friends-to-more fans, this book is for you!
I love that when Pepper Basham writes YA, she actually writes YA: Language: None! LGBTQ: None! Violence: None! Romance: A couple of not-very-detailed kisses.
Adorable story with a touching life lesson. Characters are so well articulated that you feel as if you really know them. Small town setting with a book store and coffee shop. Loved this book. This book is definitely worth the read. I received an ARC to read. The opinions expressed here are my own thoughts.
If you have a daughter or know a female YA who loves to read, I wholeheartedly recommend this book! was it predictable? yes 100%! Did they have teenager miscommunication? absolutely! but it was cute and sweet, and you don't have to tell anyone to skip any chapters because of the content.
There were so many great themes throughout this book, but the most dominant one was your identity in Christ and being confident in being YOU! I have read and loved many of Pepper's adult novels! This is her first YA novel, and I thought she did a great job! She kept her humour and wit ( so many good movie/ book quotes) while making it relatable for young adults.
Review of an advanced copy received from the author.
What a wonderful book! I am looking forward to sharing this book with my nieces. This is exactly the kind of story that we need more of! A story that not only identifies with teens but also reflects the strong family and faith values that will remind us all that we are God’s masterpiece! I really enjoyed these characters. The real-life struggles they face, and the character development and growth as the story progresses is believable as well as relatable.
This is the perfect YA rom-com! I loved how much biblical truth was woven into the story. I highly recommend this book for teens, and adults too💕 The characters felt a little young for seniors in high school, so this book may be enjoyed more by teens in middle school and early high school. The romance was cute and sweet, and the story touches a lot of friendship dynamics, which could be really great for a middle YA audience.
If you are looking for a book for your teen that is clean and a lot of fun, this one is rated PG for Pure Genius! I was hooked from the start and I am 76! Ms Basham has captured the high school atmosphere and has penned a story that teaches a lesson: God loves you as you are! Paisley is a nerd with nerdy friends but wants to fit in with the popular crowd. So she starts taking an advice book called THE CINDERELLA PLOT seriously. But it backfires and she almost loses her best friend Chris ( a favorite character) in the process. With hilarious high jinx that landed me in a coughing fit, Paisley and friends are characters that are endearing and entertaining. I loved all the movie and literary references and the chapter headings were fabulous. The story sees Paisley getting herself into a pretty pickle but with prayer, honesty and pure guts, she sets things right again. Ms. Basham is very adept at writing a comedy with heart and purpose. And in this one, she writes a book within a book when she also writes a self-help book that Paisley follows in hopes of a transformation. This may be a YA book but all ages will absolutely love it! *A little copy of this book was provided by the author. I was not required to post a favorable review. All opinions are mine alone.*
This is cute; the messaging is a little heavy-handed at times, but it was fun. (The heavy-handedness might not be an issue to young adult readers.) I liked the characters a lot, and the writing was engaging.
I had to wait a few days to post this review, though, because I was pretty angry at the book at first. This isn't a spoiler, but it is a RANT: The heroine Paisley is supposed to be this bookworm who loves Jane Austen (and she can be a little judgy about people who aren't readers). AND YET she also seems to think that "You have bewitched me body and soul" is a quote from Jane Austen. Paisley uses the line as a reason to say PP is a superior novel to Emma. But that line is not in the novel, y'all. It's a line in the Keira Knightley movie; it was written by a screenwriter. Jane Austen did not write it. (Austen did write: "Darcy had never been so bewitched by any woman as he was by her. He really believed, that were it not for the inferiority of her connections, he should be in some danger.") Anyway. I was pretty mad. I'm getting mad again just writing this review.
This book was so sweet and cute and charming! If you love Mr. Knightley, you’ll love Chris! Pepper, please write more YA!
I do have one big critique however that I hope can be fixed for future editions: there were many typos and other errors (like inconsistencies) that I spotted.
This is one of the sweetest, sincerest, hearfelt stories! Loved every minute of it! I definitely am recommending this to every book friend out there! **I was provided an advance reader copy by the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Utterly charming! What a sweet and delightful young adult story, that perfectly captures growing pains, trials & errors, and discovering who and what are most important. Paisley is so easy to root for, she's lost her mom, her dad remarried and moved away, and she lives with her aunt and uncle over their bookshop. She is a quirky, funny senior in high school that gets herself a self-help book for young girls called The Cinderella Plot to become more visible. She begins to transform herself, with friends and family who love her the way she is, but support her by trying something new even when they are not sure where this is headed.
Her best friend Chris figures out he has feelings for her first. Oh what a sweet young man. I loved their friendship, their movie banter, and the journey of how they navigate changes. A heartwarming story of faith, family, humor, and friends to more. Outstanding! I wish I had stories like this when I was a young adult! Thank you to the author for allowing me to read an early copy. All opinions are my own.
Cute if somewhat predictable story. I would give it 3 stars but I read the Kindle version and it had so many errors (missing words, wrong words, etc.) that it was annoying.
“Sometimes the scariest thing in the world is letting people see the real you.”
My 12 yo thoughts: This book made me laugh quite a few times. I liked Chris, he was my favorite character. I think that Paisley really cared about Chris even before she really realized it. She was very kind. I liked how the book ended. I really like this line from Chris: “Good.” He slumps back against his pillows, suddenly looking exhausted. “Because you’re my favorite person.”
My thoughts: This is a wonderful Young Adult romcom full of friendship, faith, and first love. I loved all of the book and movie references! I honestly wish I would have had books like this to read when I was a teen/YA. My favorite thing about this book is how the FMC realizes that she is enough, she is loved for who she is, and that God made her to be exactly who she is.
Paisley is smart, quirky, and finding herself. I loved her friends Molly, Chris, and Skyler. They had me cracking up multiple times. As a Mom, Paisley’s insecurities and struggles broke my heart. It really reminded me how important it is that I pray that God will protect my daughter’s heart and mind against the pressures of this world and the lies of the devil. I loved seeing Paisley realize that she didn’t have to change to be loved because she already was by her family, friends, and God. I enjoyed seeing her realize how important Chris was to her and that maybe she wanted him as her boyfriend (with no space 😆) One of my favorite parts is when Paisley gets her Bible out and compares the truths of God’s Word to her “self-improvement” book! 👏🏻 Chris! Oh Chris is perfectly sweet and protective. I loved when he would run guys off when they were trying to flirt with Paisley. Chris tries to support Paisley during her transformation. Poor guy is struggling! Their conversation where they admit that they care for each other as more than friends was so perfect. There are kisses (of course it’s a Pepper book 😍), I felt that they were appropriate for the YA audience.
A few more quotes: “These guys fall in love with a voice, or a dress, or a magical moment,” he continues. “And then they can’t recognize the actual person when she’s standing right in front of them without all the sparkles.”
Chris sighs dramatically. “I love it when you talk nerd.”
“You have always been dateable and definitely worth noticing for all the right reasons. The fact that they couldn’t see that—that’s not your problem, Pais. That’s theirs.”
This ARC was provided by the author. I was not required to give a positive review, rating and opinions are my own.
I absolutely adored this darling story of Paisley, a somewhat quirky, bookish high school senior, who takes up reading a “self-help” book called The Cinderella Plot in an effort to improve herself. She decides to undertake the challenge to transform herself into someone who attracts attention and gets noticed. In the process, however, she risks getting lost in the superficial details, like new clothes, cute hair, and popularity—especially the lure of some unexpected suitors. The details are fun though, and she risks alienating her long-time best friend Chris when she loses track of her priorities. There are myriad literary references throughout the book, which as a fellow bookish girl I heartily endorse. But it’s the voices of the people Paisley loves the most that call her back into the fold, and remind her that she was pretty wonderful just the way she was, and it was there that I could see who this love story really starts with. The beautiful faith element woven through the story was my favorite thing of all. Don’t miss this one, even if YA isn’t usually your first pick. This one has something for everyone. I received an advanced copy of this book from the author and was under no obligation to provide a positive review.
I dream of a world where all YA novels offered to our children hold such valuable life lessons within the pages in the way this one does. Completely free of spice or any other questionable content – this book is a safe place for teens, and I think they are going to wildly relate. This story was entertaining, charming, inspiring and just an all-around beautiful work of fiction. Pepper is incredibly gifted at penning stories that feel like a contemporary fairytale and this one did not disappoint. She doesn’t shy away from faith elements either – they are beautifully woven throughout. These characters were perfectly imperfect, and I dare you to read and not recognize a little of yourself in all of them.
Paisley Harper, a senior in high school, feels unseen. She’s kind, bookish and quirky. She’s feeling ready for a change and with the help of the best-selling book, The Cinderella Plot, Paisley is geared up for a head-to-toe makeover that will stop her peers in their tracks. While the book boasts of life-changing transformation, the reality is that its focus is really nothing more than one’s outside appearance. She doesn’t feel transformed, in fact, the new attention her makeover brings leaves her feeling emptier than ever. Paisley’s best friend, Chris, isn’t sure what to make of the “new” Paisley and he fears he’s losing the one girl that he’s loved deeper than he’s ever taken the time to admit.
Paisley’s family situation is complicated, which you’ll learn more about as you read – but it’s understandable why she struggles with confidence and acceptance. I think we’ve all been there as teens…often as adults as well, honestly. It takes a lot of life sometimes to realize that authenticity is priceless and being comfortable in the skin God gave us is the key to thriving. I also think a lot of times we get so wrapped up in social status and appearances that we often miss the incredible blessings that are literally right in front of us.
Buy this book for some teens that you know! It’ll truly be a gift that keeps on giving.

Am I ever grateful that Pepper Basham has written a Christian YA novel that hits at the heart of identity, true friendship, and selflessness. This charming story about Paisley Harper exposes a young woman's desire to be known and loved while navigating the murky waters of the plentiful advice available to her. It's a heed to be discerning about the source of the information we consume while revealing the myriad of ways that God cares for us when we most need direction. I love that this book is written in a way that feels timeless while depositing you in a high school environment. It's exactly the book I would have devoured in my youth and would happily recommend to Christian women, regardless of their age.
The Christian content is top-notch and naturally embedded into Paisley's life, providing grace and biblical truth as she examines her life and heart. This story had me so engrossed in the main character's perspective and voice that I did not want to finish the book, making me hope there will be an opportunity to revisit Paisley and her world again in the future. Readers who love Pepper's winsome style of storytelling and her penchant for writing adorable heroines who emulate the love of Christ in their lives will find that The Cinderella Plot will knock your glass slippers off while donning shoes that truly and comfortably fit.
What a delightful YA novel! I’m no longer a young adult, but I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The message is clear that everyone has value, but the story is sweet and fun and quite romantic after all. Pepper Basham writes well in many genres. How wonderful that she has branched out into writing books that teens can read and relate to and enjoy! I’m so thrilled to have a book that I can recommend to my teen family and friends.
I was given a copy of this book by the author. I was not required to give a positive review. All opinions are my own.
raw real relatable I think we all have these moments when we wonder if anybody actually sees us or loves us as we are. If we just are more this way would it make us more acceptable. I love the way she recognized the feeling of wrongness in the Ideas she was reading and reached for God, and saw Him reaching for her. Beautiful message.
