We’re living in an age of deep political anger and frustration. Where did it come from, and how do we get out?
From Main Street to Wall Street, from the boardroom to the Situation Room, Anthony Scaramucci uncovers the true origins of America’s current crisis. He pinpoints the catastrophic decisions that dismantled the system supporting the American Dream – deepening inequality, corroding trust and ultimately empowering Trump’s ascent and assault on democracy.
Rising from the working class to the heights of finance and power, Scaramucci knows first-hand how money and ideals are intertwined. Now widely admired for his storytelling and blistering political analysis, he brings fresh perspective to how both parties betrayed those they once represented, cutting through partisanship and offering a roadmap for rebuilding opportunity, security and hope.
All the Wrong Moves is not about right and left. It’s about right and wrong.

Anthony Scaramucci is an American financier, entrepreneur and political figure. He is the founder and co-managing partner of SkyBridge Capital, a global alternative investments firm. As part of the first generation of his family to attend college, Scaramucci graduated from the Tufts University and Harvard Law School before embarking on a successful career in the financial services industry. In November 2016, Scaramucci was named to President-Elect Trump’s Presdential Transition Team Executive Committee. In June 2017, he was named the Chief Strategy Officer of the Export-Import Bank. He served as the White House Communications Director for 11 days in July 2017. In 2016, Scaramucci was ranked #85 in Worth Magazine’s Power 100: The Most Powerful People in Global Finance. In 2011, he received Ernst & Young’s “Entrepreneur of the Year-New York” Award in the Financial Services category. He is a member of the Committee on Foreign Relations (CFR). Scaramucci was born and raised on Long Island, New York, where he still resides today.
For a book that denigrates populism (simple answers to complex problems) this is a neat story of what went wrong in America this millennium.
Centred around the “Great Party Duopoly’s Three Catastrophic Decisions”, this book sets the context, content, and consequences of the 2000–16 period and what has happened since, whilst keeping sight of the historical parallels.
Provides a modicum of hope or at least a plan to bring rebuilding the nation, but who knows how likely this is.
Had the classic Scaramucci self-depreciation, humour, and earnestness. A very easy read even if I often didn’t agree with his thesis.
Decision #1: China acceding to the WTO on privileged terms. Had political consensus. Eroded the security of the American worker and the American dream.
Decision #2: Waging war with Iraq without raising taxes to pay for it. Breaks PAYGO consensus and removes ordinary people’s wallets from the cost of fighting war. This dovetailed with ballooning deficits stoking inflation and eroding the purchasing power of low-/middle-income Americans.
Decision #3: Bailing out banks post the GFC. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac GSEs created moral hazard for banks to make ever riskier loans, trying to make American dream real for more people. GSEs implicitly government backed, so would get a near government credit rating as couldn’t let them fail. Housing slowdown triggered collapse of this house of cards built on MBS. Argues the bailout was necessary, but nobody bailed out Main Street and the political class seen as totally indifferent to plight of 10m Americans who lost their homes. My prior was to strongly disagree if he argued the bailouts should not have happened, but he avoided that line of reasoning.
These three catastrophic decisions then led to the Tea Party, Occupy Wall Street, and eventually Trump as a fiscally liberal socially conservative symbol who could break the two party consensus.
Really enjoyable. Insightful, thought-provoking... and only takes one Scaramucci or less to read. A thoughtful analysis of a head-scratching problem... it's good to takeaway a deeper understanding of earlier decisions' consequences toward contemporary craziness. Great thesis.
