I stare at the security footage, heart pounding in my chest. I know who broke into my home—she has a face just like my own. Twenty years ago, my sister was killed and I survived. So how can she be here now? And what does she want?
For years I have been haunted by memories of the almost five months my twin sister and I were abducted and held in darkness. I see her frightened eyes, staring at me for the last time as I whisper a promise to her, the one I failed to keep. “I’ll come back for you…”
The twentieth anniversary of our abduction brings a swirling sense of dread. And when I find a black rose on the passenger seat of my car, it feels like a warning. Not long after, a figure with a face so like my own breaks into my house. My sister.
I tell myself it can’t be true. Her body was never found and I’m sure she died in that room at the hands of our abductor. But what if I’m wrong and she’s back for revenge?
Because for years I’ve kept a secret about what really happened the night I escaped. And as the threats grow, I start to fear for my life. Now it’s clear someone wants the truth to come to light. But if it does, will it destroy everything?
An addictive and breathtaking thriller, packed with nail-biting tension and a shocking final twist, The Girls in the Dark is perfect for fans of Jessica Knoll, Mary Kubica and John Marrs.

The Girls in the Dark is another story that made it to my 5‑star reads this year. It was painfully heartbreaking, beautifully written, and deeply moving. I’m honestly lost for words because the tropes included are gut‑wrenching, and yet I found myself completely invested. I finished it in less than two days. This is my first novel from the author, and I’ll definitely be reading more!
It was a rollercoaster of feelings with a mix of found family, betrayal, and survival. I’m not sure which of these three hit me the hardest, but I can definitely say the author handled all of them with so much sensitivity. Megan has just survived a tragic event after being abducted with her twin sister at fifteen, and now she’s receiving threats that make her believe her sister could still be alive… and wanting vengeance. Who knows?
What I Enjoyed: • Powerful tropes that leave a mark • Fast‑paced • Deeply emotional
What Didn’t Sit Right: • A betrayal I didn’t see coming • A tragic experience that may be too much for some readers • The Lie was a bit too explosive
In summary, this is a highly recommended story for all the thriller girlies like me who feel like they’ve read it all. This one will keep you on the edge of your seat and have you screaming after the last chapter. Wow! Huge thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture, and author Avery Bishop for my advance copy — my views are my own.
I enjoyed this book! It follows twin sisters who are abducted, with only one making it out, and what follows is a dark survival story with trauma, secrets and the past catching up in unsettling ways.
I really liked that the plot felt different from some of my recent reads, and I especially enjoyed watching the sisters’ relationship unfold over the course of the story. That dynamic added depth for me and made the emotional side of the book land well.
The varied storytelling also worked for me. It gave the story a unique feel, kept me on my toes, and made me want to see how all the pieces would come together. There were a few twists along the way. One felt a little semi predictable but others definitely surprised me.
This book does deal with heavier subject matter, so I would recommend checking trigger warnings beforehand.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the early copy of this book.
Wow, what an emotional roller coaster this book was from start to finish. I kept thinking I had it all figured out, but I’d flip the page and realize I didn’t. If you want and mystery that you won’t solve until the reveal, pick this up asap.
Thank You so much Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC !!! Wow what a captivating page turner !!! This book had me hooked from the start and I couldn’t put it down. Twin sisters Allison and Megan were abducted while out walking their dog. One gets free but her past won’t stop following her. She wants to know what happened to her twin. Is she still alive ??? Who is stalking her ??? Is it her twin ??? What secret(s) is she keeping ??? The twist still got me while I questioned it most of the book.
Megan and Alison were abducted 20 years ago and Megan survived to tell their story. Haunted by memories, she now believes she’s seeing her sister everywhere, but how can that be?
This story is told in the before and after and the story is quite compelling as we don’t know how Megan escaped or what exactly happened in regards to her sister. This was definitely a fast read that had me on the edge of my seat! The twist at the end quite literally floored me which is hard to do. I did NOT see that coming at all! Well done!
Twenty years after surviving a brutal abduction that killed her twin sister, Megan is still haunted by what happened in the dark. When a woman who looks exactly like her dead sister appears on her security footage, the past comes crashing back. As threats escalate and long-buried secrets begin to surface, Megan is forced to confront the truth about the night she escaped—because someone knows what really happened, and they want revenge.
Megan and Allison… what can I say? What these girls went through was absolutely horrific.
This book was a gripping, edge-of-your-seat thriller that I couldn’t put down. It’s fast-paced, intense, and packed with tension from start to finish. There were moments where my heart genuinely dropped, where it felt like my heart skipped a beat. The short chapters worked perfectly to keep that tension constant—just when you think you can breathe or that answers are coming, something else happens.
The story is told across two timelines: the past, when the girls were held captive, and the present, twenty years later. I really enjoyed both timelines. They balanced each other well and kept the story moving.
The characters were well done, and I felt for Megan throughout. My only critique would be that I wanted more interaction between the sisters in the past. I think that would have made their bond even stronger and deepened the emotional impact on the reader.
The plot? Chef’s kiss. I did have a thought about the big twist at one point, but I brushed it aside and didn’t think too much of it. It was only closer to the end that I realised… I might actually be right. The ending got to me, the kind that makes you just sit there and stare at the wall for a while.
This was my first book by Avery Bishop, and it definitely won’t be my last. His entire backlist is now on my TBR for the year—sorry to the other books that just got bumped down 😅
If you love your thrillers dark and twisted like I do, this one is absolutely for you.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book.
“I stare at the security footage, heart pounding in my chest. I know who broke into my home—she has a face just like my own. Twenty years ago, my sister was killed and I survived. So how can she be here now? And what does she want?”
Thanks to the author and Bookouture for the #GiftedARC via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
This book nails that psychological-suspense sweet spot: dark, fast, and packed with the kind of dread that settles in your bones. Big shoutout to #thrillerbookloversthepulse for bringing another great book to our team. Once I cracked it open, I was hooked.” Megan and Alison were snatched twenty years ago. Only Megan made it home. That’s enough to make your stomach drop, but Bishop cranks the tension even higher. The story jumps between then and now, peeling back what really happened in those woods and what it means when Megan starts spotting her sister everywhere.
Alison was never found. Is it really her? When a black rose shows up in Megan’s car, the past isn’t just haunting her. It’s banging on the door.
What hooked me A serial killer who targets twins. Months of captivity that shape both girls in different, haunting ways. Megan’s escape and the promise she makes to Alison echo through every chapter. A dual‑timeline structure that keeps the tension sharp and the reveals steady. The eerie possibility that Alison is alive… or that something far worse is happening.
Bishop builds atmosphere with precision. Every chapter tightens the grip, and the emotional fallout of survival is handled with rawness that makes the present-day storyline more unsettling. This is the kind of thriller that’ll have you flipping pages with your shoulders practically glued to your ears.
If you love psychological suspense with layered secrets and a final stretch that makes you rethink everything, this one absolutely delivers.
The Girls in the Dark is the kind of psychological thriller that settles under your skin from the first page. It opens with a jolt—a woman staring at security footage of someone breaking into her home, someone with her face. From there, the story spirals into a dark, emotionally charged exploration of trauma, sisterhood, and the secrets we bury to survive.
The novel’s greatest strength is its atmosphere: a constant, low‑grade dread that pulses beneath every memory and every present‑day threat. The narrator’s recollections of the months she and her twin sister were held captive are written with a quiet, devastating clarity. You feel the weight of the promise she couldn’t keep, the guilt that has shaped her life, and the terror of believing the past has finally come to collect its debt.
As the twentieth anniversary of the abduction approaches, the tension tightens beautifully. The black rose left in her car, the figure slipping through her home, the sense that someone knows far more than they should—it all builds into a suffocating uncertainty. The question of whether her sister could truly be alive is handled with a delicate balance of hope and horror, and the gaslighting that follows makes the ground feel as unstable for the reader as it does for her.
What unfolds is a story about truth—how it twists, how it hides, and how it can destroy. The pacing is addictive, the emotional stakes high, and the final reveal lands with the kind of shock that forces you to rethink everything that came before.
A dark, gripping, and deeply human thriller perfect for readers who love psychological suspense with emotional depth and a sting in the tail.
With thanks to Avery Bishop, the publisher and netgalley for the ARC
I didn’t expect to get so caught up in this one, but wow—The Girls in the Dark took me on a wild ride from start to finish. I’m still reeling from that ending.
Avery Bishop has a knack for making you feel everything—the tension, the fear, the confusion. The way she builds the characters’ relationships, especially the two women at the center, is absolutely gripping. You can practically feel the weight of their secrets and the way their bond shifts under pressure. I was torn between rooting for them and being completely terrified by their choices. It's rare that I find characters this complex and messy, and Bishop nails it.
The plot kept me up late, turning pages faster than I meant to. The suspense builds at just the right pace—slow enough to pull you in, but then it explodes when you least expect it. I loved how Bishop didn’t rely on cheap twists; when they came, they hit hard. That said, I did see one or two things coming a little earlier than I wanted to, but even that didn’t take away from the overall intensity.
Honestly, there were a few moments where I couldn’t put it down, and then there were other moments when I had to take a deep breath because of how dark it all got. But that’s part of what made it such a compelling read. It’s not just about the mystery—it’s about the emotional journey, and that’s what stayed with me.
So yeah, I really enjoyed this one. Definitely not perfect, but a solid, intense thriller that’ll make you think long after you finish. If you're into suspenseful, character-driven stories with a twist, this one’s for you.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the eARC.
ARC Review! The Girls in the Dark by Avery Bishop. Release date - 4/24/26
Gripping ✅ Edge of your seat ✅ Atmospheric ✅ Dark ✅ Twisty ✅ Suspense✅
If you’re looking for a book to keep you hooked the whole time, this is it! 15 year old twins Megan and Allison are kidnapped while walking their dog in the woods, and their lives become a nightmare, trapped by their captor for months and held in cages. When they finally get a chance to escape, only Megan makes it out. Twenty years later, Megan has a stalker and security footage shows an intruder at her home. Shockingly, Megan sees her twin sister’s face on the monitor.
The story is packed with tense moments that kept me guessing the entire time. I loved that the FMC had a secret too. It gives it that that “oh snap!” moment in a book that I totally love and adds more intrigue to the premise. In fact, it seemed like everyone had secrets! I thought at times I had figured out the twist and then again I wasn’t so sure…
The dual timelines added extra tension, and I found myself racing through the final chapters.
The descriptions of the scenes were really vivid, especially the scenes while they were held captive. It brought that creepy feeling to life. I’m still going back and forth with the ending, while the ending worked, I did find myself wanting just a little bit more from those final moments! A certain part of it gave me all the feels, I just can’t speak on it even though I want to because I don’t want to give anything away. Definitely a great read!
Thank you @averybishopbooks @netgalley and @bookouture for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Avery Bishop does not write thrillers; she conducts excavations. Megan stares at a security feed. She sees a face that should be rotting in a memory. Allison. The twin. The one left in the dark twenty years ago. This isn't a story about a miracle return. It is about the Roman concept of superstes; the one who survives to stand over the ruins and realizes the new house is built on bones.
Megan is not a victim of "healing." She is a woman performing safety. When Allison appears on that monitor, the performance ends. Supporting characters move like shadows in a neglected atrium; any of them could be the architect of the original sin. The tension isn't in the jump scares. It is in the intellectual dread that your foundational history is a lie.
The book hits because it treats secrets as currency. We live in an age of total transparency. Bishop reminds us that the most dangerous things are never digitized. That black rose on the car seat? Not romance. It is a funeral rite for a peace that never existed. It asks if we are ever free of the people who shaped us in the basement.
The prose is forensic. The rhythm is steady, like a pulse before a stroke. There is a dry, cynical humor in Megan’s attempt to maintain a domestic life while the past walks through her front door. We are all just one grainy video clip away from a total collapse of the self.
The ending is intellectually honest. No warm hugs. Just a mirror. It forces the question: which parts of your history are actually yours, and which were stolen by those who were supposed to love you? Lean. Mean. Observation.
This book is so much better than the synopsis made it look, as evidenced by my finishing it at 430 in the morning today. It centers on Megan, who was kidnapped and held captive along with her twin sister Allison 20 years ago. Creepy things are happening in the current timeframe that threaten to expose a secret she has kept hidden since that time. The story is told in dual timelines, with some chapters going into detail about the horrors that the girls experienced back in the day.
The story is truly captivating and both timelines added a lot to the story. Megan was a realistic character whose trauma was evident, while also moving on with the rest of her life. There are a couple of tertiary storylines in the current timeframe that were interesting and also served to help the reader understand Megan better. I did figure out one of the major twists, to an extent, but still needed the book to give me the level of detail that made it all make sense. The twists overall were good ones. I liked the end of the book and thought the author did a great job tying up loose ends, which was especially masterful because there were a lot of threads to pull.
Overall, this was a really strong read that I had trouble putting down. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This story was so fun and fast-paced. Megan and Allison were abducted as teenagers and held for months under terrible conditions. Only Megan came back. Two decades later, Megan begins to feel watched and threatened, and she fears that maybe Allison has been alive all this time and is now tormenting her. That’s really all that can be said without spoilers, but there’s so much more to this book than that!
Megan has some allies who help and support her now, and they have plenty of secrets of their own. I didn’t see all of those surprises coming, which was great. The big reveal, though? I guessed that from the start. There's one particular passage where it's foreshadowed, and if that hadn't been included, it may have hidden the secret better.
I was hoping I wasn’t right so that there’d be an element of shock, but there wasn’t. That’s ok though, the story was still crazy addictive and enjoyable. That's why I love this author, because once I start reading, I cannot stop. Every character has a purpose, and I love how it all came together in the end. Although I wish there had been an epilogue, because come on, you can’t just end it there!
My thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the free advanced reading copy of this book.
Hooked from the very beginning, this was the kind of book that turns into “just one more chapter”… until you realize you’ve stayed up all night.
The story centers around twin girls who are kidnapped and held captive for months. Only one makes it out. The other is never found… or is she? That question alone drives a constant sense of unease throughout the entire book.
What really stood out to me is what happens after survival. This isn’t just about the crime—it’s about the aftermath. What does life look like when the monster who took you is never caught? How do you heal, move forward, and exist in a world that now knows your story?
The survivor builds a life around telling that story—writing a book, going on tours, giving TED Talks—but as her platform grows, so do the shadows around her. Strange things begin to happen. There are hints of deeper secrets about what really happened during captivity, and the tension builds with every chapter. Add in obsessive followers of her captor, betrayal, lies, and constant doubt about who can be trusted, and it becomes impossible to put down.
This was a true page-turner that held my attention from start to finish. Dark, suspenseful, and layered with emotional complexity.

The Girls In the Dark by @averybishopbooks Pub date ~ April 24, 2026 🔥ARC🔥
Thank you @netgalley @bookouture for the opportunity to read and review this book.
✨️My thoughts✨️ The first word that came to mind after read this book was Chilling, Absolutely was goosebump chilling.
A few things I liked about The Girls In the Dark are... Very fast-paced storyline. Keeps your attention the ENTIRE time. The book is actually wrote in 2 different timelines- Before and After. I love when books have this timeline because i feel like you just learn more about the characters, more in depth plot and the surroundings. That ONE plot twist... Yea, WASNT expecting that. Im still thinking about that. The amount of secrets and wondering what really happened.. How long can your past actually stay hidden and can you handle the guilt? I found Megan to be relatable in her struggles and having the story in 2 timelines, you do get to know Megan a bit more and how she thinks/reacts to things.
First, I would like to thank @netgalley , @thrillerbookloversthepulse , and @averybishopbooks for the opportunity to read Girls in the Dark before its official release on April 24th this year! This will be one of those books that will stay with me for a long time.
Girls in the Dark is a gripping and chilling story that will have you gasping for air and wanting to go outside and just look at the stars. A set of identical twin girls are taken when they are out walking their dog. After five months in grueling captivity, one of the twins returns home. Then 20 years later, everything comes undone and spirals out of control for Megan. I honestly could not tell who to trust, who was tormenting Megan, and what shock was going to be on the next page! My poor Kindle and page turner couldn’t turn the pages fast enough! I was obsessed with this book, couldn’t put it down, and was even thinking about it when I wasn’t able to read it.
I was so blown away by this book and honestly had to step outside and just sit in the open for a while after reading it. I will forever recommend this book.. 5 glowing and radiant ⭐️!
This book was really good. It's about sisters Megan and Allison who are abducted and held hostage by a man for 5 months. One sister, Megan, manages to escape and always regrets not being able to go back to get Allison. She's not sure whether Allison managed to escape/survive or if her sister was murdered at the hands of the horrible man who abducted them. Megan goes on to live her life. She gets married, has a beautiful daughter, and earns a living from writing a book about her/their experience and giving talks about survival and moving on. During one particular talk, when she's doing Q&A with the audience, she gets asked an odd question, which brings back the question of whether her sister managed to survive or not. Bouncing between the then and now chapters, you'll learn what really happened to the sisters leading up to the sad conclusion. I really enjoyed this book and will be watching to see what the author does next. I definitely recommend this book to other readers. 4.5 rounded down.
Thank you to Netgalley, Bookouture, and Avery Bishop for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Having just finished this story, I can't believe I was able to go through it all. It was so dark and twisted! We alternate between two timelines, the past and now. Megan is a survivor of a serial killer who kidnapped and held her captive in a cage for months before she was able to escape. We learn that Megan had a twin sister, Allison, who was kidnapped alongside her. As the story unfolds, we learn more from her time with the Monster as well as her everyday life twenty years after the facts. For me, this book is a roller-coaster of emotions, I felt so deeply for Megan and couldn't imagine what she went through and the incredible force she had to move forward with her life, knowing the Monster wasn't found. The alternative timelines are excellent, the timing of each chapter perfect. With every page you definitely want to know more and this story really kept me up late at night to go on farthest I could. If you love dark and really twisted thrillers, you have to read this book! I more than loved it, thanks NetGalley for this amazing ARC!
A page turning mistery thriller that will make you keep guessing an questioning everything from start to finish. A book full of suspense, tension, surprises and unexpected twists. It is a tension build read but sad at the same time. Megan and Allison- identical twists are abducted and the story unravelled between past and present allowing you to better understand the full story. When I read about what Megan went through during her abduction was heartbreaking and the story highlights the emotional moments a woman can be forced to go through. The plot twists and the constant suspense made me read the book more eagerly in finding out the full story. The ending? I definitely did not see it coming. If you like thriller, this one is definitely a good one. Thank you NetGalley and the author for my amazing ARC.
Megan and Allison . Identical twins starting to grow up and apart.
Abducted together a shared experience of torture , the kidnapper never found ? Is he still at large ? Allison her sister never found , is she alive ? Remains of multiple victims , all hold the key to the edge of this story that flits from past to present to detail Megan’s life.
How easy is it been a survivor? The emotional trauma , the guilt, all built into Megan’s life.
This will have you reading with a little edge and simultaneously can’t stop. It’s gripping !
The character development, subplots that build the twists and turns, and all the elements come together to create a wonderfully intricate web. You think you could guess which way things will go then it twists again.
Definitely recommend for those who love a thriller.

👏🏻Read. This. Asap. 👏🏻
This was such a well written suspense/thriller/mystery. I had the heebie jeebie goosebumps for basically all 350 some odd pages.
Right off the bat, the FMC has odd behaviors, and it gives the entire story an ominous shadow. The dual timeline was perfect- pacing, length of chapters, etc. Every character felt untrustworthy, everything always felt off kilter, and I was always second guessing intent. The number of moving pieces in this 🙌🏻🙌🏻 the last chapter absolutely rocked my socks. This book was a haunting tragedy and it was beautiful. (Karin Slaughter fans will love this)
I received an advanced reader copy of The Girls in the Dark from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was a gripping and atmospheric thriller that kept me turning the pages. The story pulls you into a dark mystery with secrets slowly unraveling, and I loved how the tension built as more truths came to light. Avery Bishop did a great job creating an eerie mood that made the whole book feel unsettling in the best way. While there were a few moments where I wished the pacing moved a little faster, the twists and reveals made it worth the ride. If you enjoy dark mysteries with layered characters and buried secrets, this one is definitely worth picking up. A solid 4-star read for me!
Okay this one??? A full 5 stars from me because WHAT did I just read 😭👏🏽
This book had me hooked immediately and I mean immediately. The whole “my dead twin might actually be alive” concept?? Already creepy. But then you add in the past abduction, the trauma, the secrets she’s been hiding for YEARS… yeah I was locked in.
I love a thriller that messes with your head and this one did exactly that. The tension just kept building and building. Every time I thought I had it figured out, nope. Wrong. The paranoia, the fear, the “is she imagining this or is it real?” vibes had me on edge the entire time.
And can we talk about the flashbacks?? Those were DARK. Like genuinely unsettling. You could feel the fear, the helplessness, everything those girls went through. It made the present timeline hit even harder because you know there’s more to the story that she’s not telling.
The black rose detail?? Chills. The break-in?? CHILLS. Her seeing someone with her exact face?? I would’ve lost my mind immediately.
But what really made this a 5 star for me was how everything unraveled. The secrets, the truth about what really happened that night, the guilt she’s been carrying… it all comes together in a way that had me like oh… OH?? 😳
If you love thrillers with 🖤 unreliable narrators 🖤 dark past trauma 🖤 twisty “what actually happened?” plots 🖤 and that constant uneasy feeling
you need this ASAP.
This was creepy, emotional, and honestly just addictive. I flew through it and didn’t want to put it down.
Allison and Megan, identical twins, were abducted and tortured when they were younger with only one twin making it out safely. With Megan writing a tell all book about her past, she starts to receive signs that someone knows she's not telling the full story. Could it be her twin? Is she alive?
From page one, I was addicted to this story. It was fast paced, easy to read and so disturbing that I couldn't stop reading. It was so suspenseful trying to work out who was leaving all the signs from the past but the way it came together at the end was so satisfying.
I had goosebumps as I read the final page of this novel. What a story. All the stars.
This book had me gripped from the first chapter, it was so well written, the pacing and chapter length were pretty much perfect for me.
I can’t say much about the plot without giving spoilers away but I will say there are so many twists and turns you might aswell be on a rollercoaster. Every time I thought I’d got it all figured out, another twist happened.
Overall such a great read, I can’t wait to read more from this author
* full disclosure I received this book in exchange for an honest review through NetGalley*
Oh my gosh.... his is an absolutely gripping story. It is a very fast-paced thriller, turning page after page after page. It's about two sisters who are abducted. From the beginning it is about Megan who got out and her sister didn’t. But what really happened in that awful room... If you want a really unhinged thriller, reading like a rollercoaster and a great well written plot, read this one. Really no negative points about this book other than that it ended too early 😂
I want to thank @netgalley, and @bookouture for my gifted copy 🙏
This is a dark, tense, unsettling novel. To me, the main character, Megan, comes across as a strong person. She has learned to live with her demons, and fears only one thing. Her abductor. The Monster. What an odious character he is! Cruel, cold-blooded and inhumane.
The book gripped me, and I had to find out exactly how it ended, and oh, what a twist! I was not expecting THAT!
Read this. You won't be disappointed. I certainly wasn't. Although it did make me feel claustrophobic - where the girls were held.
I was given this book by NetGalley for an honest review- Twin girls are on a walk when they meet a man looking for his dog. They decide to help him— mistake!!! They are taken and kept captive for days dreaming of escape. Can they make it happen? Years later she writes a book about the time of captivity and gives talks. Strange things begin to happen- a black rose is left in her car, a woman appears looking like her sister. Can it be? Is her sister alive? You will be captivated with this story!
This author was new to me, and I read the book in a day. I found it propulsive and a real page turner. It is a thriller with different plots points that kept me guessing. The then and now time changes tell the story clearly to ultimately lead us to the conclusion. It does explore tough themes such as sexual abuse. I would read another book this author. 4-4.5. Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the advance copy.
