In a world steeped in shadow and forever on the brink of night, our six reluctant heroes leave their twilight city behind and join the motley crew of pirates, necromancers and galley corpses aboard the warship Triton. Together, they embark on an epic voyage of discovery to the edge of the world.
Their journey brings them to a place very different to the one they left behind; a place where the dead aren't raised to serve the living, and where magic is forbidden to all but the gods. They aren't welcome in this place – and nor are the Risen dead they brought with – but they press on regardless in search of answers.
What happened to Valanthé's father? Where do the Baron and Gerard go when they lose their consciousness? Has Thessu seen the last of his former mentor? And who is manipulating Epifani? As for Remy... will he even make it onto the ship? Find out as we journey Beyond the Ever-Setting Sun!
Beyond the Ever-Setting Sun continues the story of Remy, Gerard, Valanthé, Colin, Epifani, Thessu, and the Baron as they try to make sense of the revelations revealed at the end of book 1. They still don't know whether they're working to save the world or destroy it... and they still don't all agree which outcome they'd prefer.
The gang is back with the continuation of the adventure into their interwoven fates from the first book. I don't want to spoil the plot twists by saying too much but the Baron and Belle are still my favourite characters, with some laugh out loud moments curtesy of Thessu. Let's just say if you love pirates of the Caribbean and Jason and the argonauts you'll love this high action adventure. I was lucky enough to read an advanced copy of this but the review is completely my own and unbiased. I'm really looking forward to book 3 if there is one.
This book was absolutely as fabulous as the first! It continues delving into the characters and their stories with the perfect pace. This new world was very intresting to read and understand. I could not put the book down and finished it in 3 days!! I would highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys fantasy. The world building, character development and just brilliant writing captures you straight away! I can’t wait to see what happens in the next instalment, an amazing author who writes brilliant stories.
Beyond the Ever-Setting Sun’s first chapter is a great continuation from the first book. It reminds you what is going on in the story and of each character without info dumping, while still progressing the story.
Just like the first book, I’ve really enjoyed the depth of detail Mat goes into. He has again described everything amazingly, from characters, old and new, to the environments and fight scenes. As always, the fight scenes were action packed, high stakes and were even much more intense.
I thought that Mat really let the character’s personalities show more as time goes on which is great. Seeing character’s growing up or changing their ways because of certain events, it really adds to the story and helps you think of the timeline and where they all started.
I found that this sequel had more comedic moments which I really enjoyed. There were most likely moments I shouldn’t have laughed, but I did. I’m not sure what that says about me, but I enjoyed every part of this book, which in the end as a reader, it’s all that matters. Those poor character’s just never seem to be able to catch a break and I find that hilarious.
When you think that there’s a calm moment, something else always creeps up and interferes with the current objective. It’s non stop action which really keeps you interested and wanting to carry on reading.
With this being the sequel to Under an Ever-Setting Sun, I was already invested in the story and yet somehow, I was more invested the more I read of this one. I have gasped and been shocked by moments in this book which I loved.
I really enjoyed the journey the gang went on and I’m ready for book 3. I would recommend that that anyone that likes dark fantasy checks out this series. Book 2 has definitely left me guessing about what could happen next and I can’t wait to see.

Advance copy provided by the author for purposes of independent review.
I loved this even more than the first book! Beyond the Ever-Setting Sun picks up the story shortly after the end of book 1, and our motley crew of characters explore a vastly expanded world. Every place they visit feels fresh and exciting, but also lived-in and well-rounded. They find adventures and dangers alike, plus some of the answers they were looking for. The author keeps us engaged with more of his wonderful dialog and character work, and we see some real conflict within the group that isn’t fully resolved… and simmering tension sets the scene for an even more explosive 3rd instalment to come. I can’t wait for the next book in the series! A great story, supremely well written.
