This historical romance centers on duty, family reputation, and the weight of legacy. Silas Rutherford, the Duke of Ayston, finds himself ensnared in a blackmail scheme threatening his sister’s honor and the esteemed Rutherford name. Known in society as the “Saint of St. James” for his unwavering morality and icy restraint, Silas takes drastic measures to protect his family.
Enter Genevieve, the notorious fallen lady of the Faro tables, a social outcast who knows the city’s darkest secrets. To outmaneuver the blackmailer, the two enter a marriage in name only, beginning a tense and fascinating journey together. As long-buried secrets and dangerous truths come to light, the careful barriers between them start to crumble, replaced by a growing and undeniable desire. Silas must ultimately choose between preserving his family’s unblemished honor or embracing the woman who has managed to pierce his marble heart.
The premise is compelling, and the characters are engaging, but the story suffers from repetitive passages and continuity issues that occasionally disrupt the flow. These editing problems detract from the otherwise immersive narrative. While I appreciated the book’s concept and found it enjoyable overall, I’m giving it three stars rather than four because the execution fell short of its potential.
