“I am not here for games,” Silas rasped. Genevieve’s smile was dangerous. “Then leave, Your Grace. My secrets aren’t bought with gold. They are bought with your name.”
When a scandalous letter threatens to shatter the pristine Rutherford legacy, Silas Rutherford, the Duke of Ayston, is forced to descend into the filth of Covent Garden. To unmask a ruthless blackmailer, he must strike a devil’s bargain with the one woman the ton has cast into the shadows.
He is the "Saint of St. James," a man of iron-clad morality and icy restraint. She is the fallen lady of the Faro tables, a social pariah who knows every dark secret the city hides.
A vow of convenience binds them, but the safety of a ducal title cannot shield Genevieve from the searing heat of Silas’s gaze. As they navigate the smoke-filled gaming hells and rain-slicked alleys of London, their cold tactical alliance begins to bleed into a forbidden, bone-deep desire that threatens his legendary control.
“You were supposed to be my guide through the dark, Genevieve—not the light I can no longer live without.”
With a predator tightening the noose around their necks, Silas must decide what matters the unblemished honor of his name or the woman who has finally cracked his marble heart. In a world built on lies, their truth might be the only thing that saves them—or the very thing that ruins them forever.

This historical romance centers on duty, family reputation, and the weight of legacy. Silas Rutherford, the Duke of Ayston, finds himself ensnared in a blackmail scheme threatening his sister’s honor and the esteemed Rutherford name. Known in society as the “Saint of St. James” for his unwavering morality and icy restraint, Silas takes drastic measures to protect his family.
Enter Genevieve, the notorious fallen lady of the Faro tables, a social outcast who knows the city’s darkest secrets. To outmaneuver the blackmailer, the two enter a marriage in name only, beginning a tense and fascinating journey together. As long-buried secrets and dangerous truths come to light, the careful barriers between them start to crumble, replaced by a growing and undeniable desire. Silas must ultimately choose between preserving his family’s unblemished honor or embracing the woman who has managed to pierce his marble heart.
The premise is compelling, and the characters are engaging, but the story suffers from repetitive passages and continuity issues that occasionally disrupt the flow. These editing problems detract from the otherwise immersive narrative. While I appreciated the book’s concept and found it enjoyable overall, I’m giving it three stars rather than four because the execution fell short of its potential.
