Lani Lynn Vale is married to the love of her life that she met in high school. She fell in love with him because he was wearing baseball pants. Ten years later they have three perfectly crazy children and a cat named Demon who likes to wake her up at ungodly times in the night. They live in the greatest state in the world, Texas. She writes contemporary and romantic suspense, and has a love for all things romance. You can find Lani in front of her computer writing away in her fictional characters world...that is until her husband and kids demand sustenance in the form of food and drink.
Prepare yourself for a storm of emotions, red-hot chemistry, and a plot that’ll keep you guessing. Lani Lynn Vale’s Little Ray of Pitch Black plunges us into a world where reputation is everything, and beneath the surface of small-town judgment lies a simmering darkness and unexpected hope.
The story centers on Jessamy, a young woman burdened by her brother's misdeeds and the town's unwavering condemnation. Branded a rebel, she embraces the moniker, but behind her defiant façade lies a vulnerability that catches the eye of Black, a man who sees the truth beyond the whispers. As Black uncovers the extent of Jessamy’s brother's manipulations, he finds himself fiercely protective of the resilient woman who has been unfairly cast out.
What truly shines in Little Ray of Pitch Black is the undeniable, scorching chemistry between Jessamy and Black. Their connection is palpable, crackling with an intensity that makes them an absolute delight to read. Vale excels at crafting characters who feel real, even in the heightened world of MC romance. Jessamy’s journey from ostracized to embraced by the Dixie Warden MC family is heartwarming, showcasing the power of found family. The plot itself is a masterclass in suspense, delivering twists and turns that will leave you breathless, secrets unraveling with satisfying impact. The raw emotion woven into Jessamy's story is profound, eliciting genuine sympathy and admiration for her strength.
While the intensity of the drama and the palpable heat between the leads are significant strengths, some readers might find the plot occasionally veers into very dark territory. The relentless nature of the challenges Jessamy faces, though central to her strength, can be emotionally taxing.
Fans of gritty MC romances who crave a potent blend of suspense, steamy passion, and characters who fight for their happily ever after. If you enjoy a heroine who possesses inner grit despite external pressures, and a hero who sees beyond the surface to protect and cherish, you’ll be captivated. I appreciate a fast-paced plot with plenty of surprises; you'll also find yourself hooked.
Takeaway: Little Ray of Pitch Black is a compelling read that delivers on its promise of intense romance and thrilling suspense. Lani Lynn Vale masterfully crafts a story of redemption and fierce protection, anchored by an unforgettable couple. If you're looking for a book that will ignite your senses and tug at your heartstrings, pick this one up. You won't regret following Jessamy and Black's journey.
I did it again and devoured this book in one sitting😳Jessamy and Black appear to be like water and oil but secretly both hold affection for the other🥰
Jessamy has had it tough because of her family. She left home at eighteen as soon as she was able to and because of said family, became the talk of the town and subsequent pariah😢 Black is the Sheriff but also a member of the Dixie Wardens MC. His ex disappeared years ago with their daughter and he has searched high and low for his daughter for years. Now, that Jessamy is older, Black is noticing things he hasn’t before and starting to see how the town treats Jessamy but also realising his protectiveness might be more☺️
Loved this story…and Jessamy and Black together - chef’s kiss💋 I received an advanced copy and voluntarily leave my honest review❣️
This series is a bit different than LLVs prior and the characters are good men, who maybe have some darkness to them. This one is even more different than that and the disturbing twists were beyond intriguing. Black is the sheriff, fellow Dixie Warden member and pretty much a good guy. Yet he falls for a girl who isn’t or doesn’t seem like the best character or person. This story is full of pain, intrigue and a romance that will have you loving it even with all the crazy. Jess and Black were such a great read with the twists and the banter you will be entertained beginning to end. I highly recommend this book. Told in dual POV.
Who knew that book 11 in the Don’t Date Him series was going to completely blow me away? Because honestly, I wasn’t prepared for this one!
Intense, emotional, gripping, sizzling chemistry, and a suspense element that just keeps building. Little Ray of Pitch Black is something truly special, and Lani Lynn Vale has delivered another five-star read that had me completely hooked.
This enemies-to-lovers romance has been brewing for so long, quietly simmering in the background of previous stories, always just on the edge of your vision. You knew it was there, you knew something was coming, but nothing could have prepared me for the emotional rollercoaster that is Jessamy and Black.
Jessamy will steal your heart. She has been through so much, and the walls she has built around herself are made of steel. You can feel the pain, the hurt, and the reasons she keeps everyone at a distance. And then there is Black Adkins, Sheriff of Jesper County, the man who has always been there when Jessamy finds herself in trouble. He has his own heartache to carry, and these two have a way of clashing that makes their chemistry absolutely electric.
But it is their backstory that really gets you. The deeper we go into Jessamy’s past, the more heartbreaking and intense it becomes. And when we finally understand what she has endured, particularly when it comes to her younger brother, the whole story takes on an entirely different level of emotion. Some of those revelations are genuinely chilling.
Black may be older than Jessamy, but you honestly never feel it. Their connection, their chemistry, and the way they challenge one another make this such a compelling couple. I was so completely gripped by their story that I didn’t want to put the book down.
This is one of those stories you never knew you needed until you read it. A romance that pulls at your heart, keeps you guessing, and leaves you thinking about its characters long after you’ve turned the final page.
And now we are just one book away from the end of the Don’t Date Him series. How are we supposed to say goodbye to this world and these characters? All we can do is hope that the final book is just as stunning as every single five-star read that has come before it.
Beyond the Synopsis…
A slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance, two beautifully broken characters, a backstory that will leave you reeling, and suspense that keeps you turning those pages. Jessamy and Black are everything I didn’t know I needed.
Read it for…
* An enemies-to-lovers romance years in the making. * Sizzling chemistry and a couple who never stop clashing. * A heroine whose strength will steal your heart. * A heartbreaking and chilling backstory. * Suspense that keeps building until you are completely hooked. * Another unforgettable five-star read in the Don’t Date Him series.
WOB65 Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Lani Lynn Vale, you have absolutely blown me away with this one. A must-read for fans of the series and a reminder of why I keep coming back for more. One book left… and I am not ready to say goodbye!
Little Ray of Pitch Black grabs hold and just won't let go. I have been on the edge of my seat waiting for Black's story and it did not disappoint. Jessamy has been trying to escape her brother and protect herself from the situations he continues to put her in. When she is constantly being blamed for the things that her brother is responsible for this little rebel decides why not live up to the reputation the town and its people are branding her with. Black is the town sheriff and the chemistry and connection between him and his little rebel is undeniable. I loved that behind the scenes he protects her as much as he can and the more he learns about her brother, the more he realizes why she is the way she is. Their story was overflowing with drama, action, suspense, mystery and also took you to a little darkness. Jessamy was a strong character and one that you easily loved and respected. These two together steal your heart with such ease. The way these two wanted to protect each other even if it put themselves in the firing line will leave you wanting to hold them both tight. The heat between them is a raging inferno and will set you on fire. Their journey to a HEA is packed with emotions, that will at times break your heart, have you laughing out loud and making you sigh with content as their love shines through. The epilogue to their story was the icing on the cake bringing a little ray of sunshine into the pitch black.
Arh I love me the underdog. I love a woman who gets exactly what she deserves and Jessamy bless her soul got all that good in the end.
Black is delectable. A broken man still searching for hir daughter. His commitment and determination is undoubtable. A little blinded by the tale of other a yet he still goes out of his way to protect the one person who sparks a tiny piece of his soul. Hes protective, attentive and so sweet.
Jessamy my sweet gal. She is my favourite kind of heroine. The one who shovels all the shit and is still standing despite everything thrown her way and she took it with no grace. My girl dug ten toes down and gave them something to say because why not live up to their ignorant expectations. She was guarded, rightfully so. Resilient beyond belief. She was also so compassionate and sweet under that defence.
Their story is delicious. Not enemies to lovers.. more like frenamies as foreplay. This game of cat and mouse. The build up. The banter. The tension. Arhhh it was perfect. They really had to work hard for everything they had and neither one started with a solid foundation. They made me feel all of the things and I devoured every second of it.
I love the full circle moment. I felt all yhe frustrations. I laughed hard. I swooned many a times. It was a rollercoaster. Tied in with some great side characters and some unexpected shenanigans.. what a rollercoaster.
I honestly cannot believe this is nearly the end of this series! Having read this author for 14 years and BOUGHT every single book including this one(preordered) and pre ordered what's up for next year.. *COWBOYS* .. I am never surprised to love a book but love the evolution of these worlds and the endless possibilities that come along with it!
It is so bittersweet to reach Book 11 of the Don't Date Him series. Knowing the next book is the final installment makes every chapter feel even more special, and I’m genuinely sad to see the series end. Over 11 books, Lani Lynn Vale has delivered drama, unforgettable characters, and a whole lineup of dangerous bad guys who finally got what was coming to them—and Little Ray of Pitch Black is no exception.
Jessamy has had it rough, thanks to a psycho brother who has made her life a living nightmare since childhood. Things have gotten so wild that Sheriff Black Adkins has arrested Jess multiple times—even when she didn’t do a single thing wrong. But through all the chaos, Black couldn't help developing deep feelings for the fierce, strong-willed Jess. And Jess? She’s been secretly crushing on the handsome sheriff for years.
Black brings his own heavy emotional baggage to the table. His ex-wife up and left him, taking his daughter and keeping her hidden away for over ten long years. Watching his side of the story unfold adds so much heart and depth to his character.
With two central mysteries alongside the budding romance between Black and Jess, the pacing never slows down. It was a complete blast to read—and over way too fast. But deeply satisfying with a well-deserved Happily Ever After.
As always, life in the Laniverse never disappoints!
Thanks, Give Me Books Promotions, for the eArc. These opinions are mine.
Little Ray of Pitch Black is book 11 in the ‘Don’t Date Him’ series by Lani Lynn Vale and focuses on the characters Jessamy and Black.
Jessamy lives with the condemnation of the town she lives in due to her parents and younger brother. Whenever there is trouble she is blamed until she starts doing things, because, well why not, if you’re going to get blamed for it anyway! Thrown into the mix is Black, the Sheriff of the town and also a member of the Dixie Wardens MC. Black has his own burdens, that of his child being by the mother and hidden from him for years! He notices Jessamy straight away but feels that she is too young for him to begin with, but boy does that change when time moves on.
This was a great story to read with lots of intrigue, passion and some good snark. Jessamy goes through a lot and her brother (creepy is one word for him!) I also liked that Black has her back when things got tougher and that he didn't want to hide the relationship. I also liked that Jessamy had Black's back and she goes above and beyond helping him. Together they are a great power couple.
Overall, I really enjoyed this addition to the series and really liked the dynamics of the characters.
ARC received for a fair, honest and sometimes long review 😊
Hold on to your hats because this one is going to be a bumpy, wild ride! This story will plunge you into the worlds of Black, the local sheriff still desperately trying to find his daughter after his wife disappeared with her many years ago, and Jessamy, the town pariah who has been terrorized by her younger brother her entire life and no one believes her when she tells them he’s crazy.
As Black slowly comes to realize just how much of an outcast Jessamy really is, he finally realizes his feelings go far more deeply than he cares to admit. Even though Jessamy may have decided to embrace her standing as the town pariah a long time and give them the finger while doing so, we see the vulnerability she tries desperately to hide. These two have a white hot chemistry that finally explodes
Lani Lynn Vale continues to prove just how much of a brilliant author she really is. Story after story, she brings life to characters that seem entirely too real and make you wish to be a part of their world. This one will keep you on the edge of your seat while making you fall in love with the Dixie Wardens and their women all over again. The way the ladies embrace Jessamy and show her that sometimes a found family is the best family made my heart smile for her. I loved everything about this one and read it, as usual, in one sitting.
I absolutely loved reading Black and Jessamy’s story. It had me laughing, it had me crying, my emotions were all over the place!
This book had a lot of tragedy and a lot of little plot twists I never saw coming! Such a well written book!
Black Adkins is the sheriff of Sawtooth and has had a thorn in his side for most of his career. That thorn is none other than Jessamy. Jessamy got dealt a hard life. She has a younger brother, Leo, who has a lot of problems that have made their way into Jessamy’s life on the regular. It makes living in Sawtooth ridiculously hard for her. Black, as well as most of the town, thinks she’s a troublemaker when in reality it’s her psychotic brother!
Jessamy can’t stand most of the population of Sawtooth but there has always been something about the sheriff. She can’t get him out of her mind. Same goes for Black. He frequently gets called to scenes that involve Jessamy but for some reason he enjoys seeing her.
The character development for both Black and Jessamy is very well written. They both have to overcome some pretty big trust issues in order to accept what’s right in front of them.
I honestly loved everything about this book! Bring on the next one!
I say this everytime, but this is my favourite book in the series so far. Black and Jessamy made me feel all the things. I love how LLV can put us through the emotional wringer in so many different creative ways. This book has lost daughters, psychopaths, slow burning connection and the trademark LLV suspense/threat.
We already know Jessamy as the town outcast. She is a trouble maker and is very well known to law enforcement. What we haven't seen before is her loneliness and touch starvation. She was forced to take the rebellious path due to her unhinged brother and being constantly blamed for his misbehaviour. Jessamy has grown a thick skin, a sassy attitude and a familiar relationship with law enforcement. Black has been quietly protecting Jessamy for years. He could always see beneath the rebel exterior. He carries his own issues and heartbreak having not seen his daughter for years. He is relentless in his search for her.
These two are polar opposites on paper. But his care and protectiveness allows Jessamy to share the burden and find comfort. Their connection is gorgeous to read and I love the actions each does for the other.
A perfect addition to the Dont Date Him series from LLV .
I have been waiting for Black's book, and now I need someone to sit down with me so we can discuss Jessamy's family because GOOD GRIEF. Jessamy has spent years being the talk of the town, and almost everyone has decided they hate her. She moved out of her family home as soon as she could, but that certainly didn't stop people from judging her.
Black is the sheriff and a Dixie Wardens MC member. He's also spent years searching for the daughter his ex disappeared with, so he's had plenty of his own problems. He's dealt with Jessamy and her family for years, but now he's finally starting to see her differently and question some of the things he's believed.
I loved these two together, although Black irritated me because HOW did he not recognize what was happening to Jessamy sooner? I think everything surrounding his ex and daughter clouded his judgment, but I still wanted to shake him. Jessamy was wonderful. She sometimes embraced being the town rebel, but we also saw how deeply years of being hated affected her.
The chemistry was scorching, the suspense kept me guessing, and her family had me ready to scream. There's also a line involving a certain condiment that was so diabolical and funny I had to laugh. I'm not telling you what it was. I couldn't read this fast enough!
I have enjoyed this series immensely, but I must say this story was my absolute FAVORITE 🥰
OMG - Jessamy - the abuse she endured by her brother and parents, the torment from the community, and being labeled as the town's pariah, I don't know how she turned out to be such a strong woman. I loved her because she was so kindhearted, giving her time and energy to those that needed it without wanting any acknowledgement, just doing it because it was the right thing to do.
Black, the town's sheriff, protected Jessamy in his own way and made her off limits to the department. I'm glad that he finally claimed her publicly because she didn't want to cause him any problems due to their relationship.
The people that hurt her -- they got the karma they deserved.
I loved Jessamy's and Black's secret thoughts -- some of my favorites:
🚗If women are bad at parking, it's probably because they're constantly lied to about what eight inches is. Jessamy 🤣I'm glad that I have boobs. The last thing I would want is people in this town making eye contact with me. Jessamy 🚿All right, my little ketchup packet. Let's get you in the shower then. Black
Good hearted characters with addictive drama! The next book in Vale's Don't Date Him series does not disappoint as we are quickly thrust into turmoil with Jessamy and Black. She's misunderstood and treated like crap in town because of her psychopath little brother and he's the guy who always felt a connection to her even when he was falling for the lies. Watching them finally connect and see each other is heartwarming. Their relationship starts off rushed and hidden, but along the way becomes very sincere and emotional. Both have powerful back stories and family turmoil that has changed their recent years tremendously. I was quicky hooked on them and every page helped bring me one step closer to their happily ever after. Great characters, a strong supporting cast and lots of drama to keep you entertained.
Loving this series and strongly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a heartfelt connection as a set of wronged men set out to start their lives over and happen upon a solid foundation of friends and their one true love along the way.
This is the eleventh book in the series. It is one I've been waiting for because Black has intrigued me through out this series. Plus a troublemaker and the sheriff sounds so good. I'm not gonna lie there were a few parts I was not a fan of and it is one of the things I really dislike to read in my romance books. Truthfully the only reason I kept reading is because I'm a huge fan of Lani Lynn vale's books otherwise I would have stepped away from this book. Man Jessamy's brother is pure evil and getting all the details of what he has put her through boiled my blood. She thinks she has no one in her corner, but she is about to see for herself that's not true. I really loved how Black was looking out for her. There banter and back and forth was a highlight of this book for me. There is a moment for Black that had tears flowing. It hit me with all the feels. This book really took me on a roller coaster of emotions. I would be gasping in delight and the next breath gasping in shock and holding onto my seat. A good addition to the series!
This is the 11th book in this phenomenal series, and this is Jessamy and Black’s story. Jessamy left home as soon as she was 18 to escape her toxic family, especially her psychotic brother, who has turned the whole town against her over the years, leaving her with complete disregard of all forms on authority. Black is the sheriff in town, and he has been dealing with Jessamy’s attitude for years, but he is protective and has a soft spot for her, as well as having his own problems in finding his daughter, who disappeared with his ex-wife without a trace. This is a well written story which is a slow burn, easy to read, emotional roller coaster, with family dynamics, friendships, tension, challenges, suspense, intrigue, drama, turmoil, opposites attract, enemies / lovers, humour, witty banter, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining, unpredictable, and heartwarming page turner. I look forward to reading more from these talented authors’ whose work I highly recommend.
Jessamy and Black!!! I’ve been waiting for this story and it was worth the wait. Jessamy is known as the town pariah, thanks to her brother. No one believed that he’s evil so she decides to just live her life as she sees fit. She knows black is always there to help her out if he can. She’s grateful for his help. Over time her feelings are growing deeper and moving into a different territory. Black is the town sherif and has been dealing with Jessamy’s “antics” for a long time. He also has a soft spot for her. And as time goes on, he’s beginning to realize that maybe Jessamy has been getting a bad wrap. And his feelings are growing into a different kind and his heart may not survive Jessamy.
This book is a fantastic read! The twists and turns will keep you guessing as to what could possibly happen next. We are introduced to some new characters (I hope we see more of them). The spice level is delicious. And as always, you will be laughing, swooning and wondering what the heck’s just happened.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Black & Jessamy: triggers- toxic sibling relationship, murder, assault, kidnapping, parental alienation, mental health, group bullying, PTSD.
Once again we enter the somewhat dark mind of Lani Lynn Vale. This book focuses on Black, who's the sheriff and also a member of the Dixie Wardens and Jessamy who's a town pariah. But when it comes to Jessamy, you can't believe everything you hear… there's a reason behind the reasons everyone seems to hate her. And he's determined to make her life hell. We get a little deeper into Black’s life and his story is just as sad. The relationship between Black and Jessamy started rough but once she got older, he began to realize that she was never lying to him about things she was accused of. Now he's ready to stake his claim on her for real. Such a good story. Love this series.
I just love an frienemies to lovers book. They have the best banter, jokes and angst. Jessamy has been dealt a pretty fought hand since her younger brother was born. While everyone else thinks of her as a black cloud over the town in reality she is being tormented by a psycho brother who doesn’t understand the word no. Who ends up turning the town against her. But not all is lost. If Sheriff Black has any say in it, he will make sure everyone knows what a semi good person Jessamy is and that the problem is her brother. While Jessamy tries to avoid all things her brother and the Sheriff, her and the sheriff end up stepping over that Frienemies line that’s been drawn since Black first arrested her, hahaha. The drama that goes down with her brother is WOW. I had to keep reading to find out what happened with him.
Jessamy Darling and Sherriff Black are oil and water so why can’t he stop thinking about her? She is always in trouble, but when he learns more, he may have misjudged her and do anything to protect her. Jess, don’t call me Jessamy, has always thought Sheriff Black was extremely handsome, but when the man makes a career out of arresting you for things you don’t do it tends to make you cranky. I loved this story so much that I couldn’t put it down. Wow, Leo is a piece of work, him and Marcia should have gotten together. Such a great story that kept me guessing and wanting to read the next page. I can’t wait for more!!!!
Little Ray of Pitch Black by Lani Lynn Vale Don’t Date Him - Book 11 . Reading Method; 📱: ✅ 🎧: 📕: . This book takes the old cops and robbers game to a whole new level if you ask me! Black and Jessamy are the two people everyone in town never expected to work but these two just do.
With black being the cop, and Jessamy being his towns biggest nuisance you can see what they mean. But after come though these two just jump in anyway and stuff the consequences. I mean nothing can be worse than having a psychopath as a brother? Right? So why not drive in!!!
I absolutely loved this book and these two were honestly my favourite couple yet. . I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of Little Ray of Pitch Black and for that I am very grateful.
Oh the story I have been waiting for Black and Jessamy! OMG did my heart break for Jessamy and I couldn't help but be a little bit over protective of her! She really drew the short straw with her family! She has always been the black sheep of the town so why not embrace the persona they have given her! whilst she thinks Black is not her biggest fan, little does she know he has been looking out for her in his own way! When she comes to his aid he decides that she will be his!
I loved every page and I'm pretty sure Black and Jessamy are my favourite couple in this series and its been a tight race!
I was gifted a copy of this book by the Author and this is my honest opinion
When I saw this was Black and Jessamy's book, I screeched in excitement! HELLO MMC OFFICER and enemies to lovers chemistry.
This was such a great read! The enemies to lovers chemistry and tension is incredible. Amd guess what!? It's an age gap, a substantial one too. Love it!
In true Lani Lynn Vale fashon, this book brings the heat, interesting and relatable characters and a thrilling storyline that will have you on the edge of your seat. That climax, twisty moment at the end of the book had my heart racing!
Love me any story written by Lani. Always.

*There are some dark moments in this romantic suspense/thriller. Please do your research on TWs.*
I’ve been waiting for Black’s book and it didn’t disappoint!! Since Jessamy wasn’t believed about her brother and his psychotic ways she lived up to the reputation he built for her. She’s been arrested by Black so many times, all her brother’s doing, she basically has given up. It has taken Black years to see that Leo, Jessamy’s brother, isn’t quite right but when he does, he’s on her side fully. Black is not without his own scars. He’s been searching for his daughter, that his ex-wife took vanished without a trace. These two are polar opposites, but the care and protectiveness Black shows for Jessamy is swoon-worthy. Will everything work out in the end?
Omg!!! I loved this book!! I want to give this one more than 5 stars!! I loved getting to know Jessamy and Black so much better!! Every thing was explained so well and shock factor in this book!! I also felt for Jess in some parts of this book, she was done so wrong and just put in a bad light that she just kinda said forget I’ll be the bad guy even though she wasn’t. I had tears in my eyes and some of her confessions. I can’t wait for the next book!!! I love LLV’s writing and story telling!! I highly recommend this book and series!!!
I was so excited to start this book and then we start hearing about what Jessamy had to go through most of her life and what direction the storyline was going made the anxiety start bubbling away in my belly. At first I thought Black was going to take so long to realise what was going on right under his nose but he caught on quite quick! These two together was hot and a little tention rising but what is love without a little bang LOL Amazing as always!
Not gonna lie this book dragged me in Jessamy is one of my favorite people. She's one bada*s chick and I loved that she got to prove so many people wrong. Black is Black I didn't so much like him for Jess at first but I gotta say once he got.his head outta his butt he wasn't so bad. I loved Jessamy making friends and realizing not all people are the same. The ending surprised me alot in a good way!
Absolutely love this series. These characters are so much fun. Jessamy has been blamed for things that she wasn't even close to doing. Black is the sheriff that arrests her each time. The whole town treats her awful. I hated to see it but it was also entertaining to see her reaction to them. I love her for Black. And I was so happy he found more than just her. Couldn't put it down. The banter is hilarious. Another 5 star must read for me.
Omg this book took by surprise. I'm not sure what I was expecting but it wasn't any of this. The author cleverly hid the many layers of both main characters in the previous series so I'm actually not going to say much else. I WILL say that it's a no brainer top read and my new favourite of the series. 1000% recommend.
