I've had the pleasure of listening to Annabeth talk about plotting in several live sessions and podcast episodes. For years, I've hoped she would write a book on the topic. This long-awaited book did not disappoint!
I've read a lot of plotting books over the past twenty years. A. Lot. If I'd had this book earlier in my writing journey, I know it would have made an enormous difference. I'm excited for writers who have this resource moving forward!
What I especially appreciated about this book is that it works for both newer and experienced authors. There really is something for everyone.
For newer authors, it lays out not only the information you need to know but presents it in a way I feel most craft books on structure miss the mark. Annabeth not only acknowledges but embraces that everyone's brains work differently. This book works for people who fall on any spot on the plotter to pantser spectrum by helping authors find a way to determine an approach that complements the way one naturally writes and develops stories.
Experienced authors might be skeptical about picking up a plotting book. Especially if you don't identify as a plotter. Please, consider giving this one a chance. What I appreciate about this book is how it outlines a process for experienced authors to look at books we've already written to guide us in developing our own customized beat sheet and tighten/refine our process. While reading, I kept thinking about how this book was like an interpretive layer to all the other plotting books I'd read over the years. I took what I'd learned before and Annabeth's book gave me a way to bring all that information together. This resource is a companion to existing plotting approaches, not a replacement.
I'm a sucker for a quiz, and Annabeth has one in this book to help readers identify where they fall on the pantser to plotter spectrum through four archetypes. I scored as a "composer" - the third of four archetypes, which she calls "plotter-lite." When I read the description of the first one, I was thinking, "yeah, this actually sounds like me." Then I read the second one, and was like "oh, wait, no, this resonates even more." Then I read about the Composer. Narrator voice: It me. My goodness was it accurate. I'd never felt so seen or validated with my story development process!
I write low-angst romance and loved that she talked about angst levels in terms of structure and had lots of romance examples. But she also uses lots of examples for mysteries, thrillers, and other genres, so it didn't feel romance focused.
Five stars! I hope you check it out!

If you're a writer who has read every beat sheet and book on plotting but still doesn't know how to apply them to your own writing, this is the book for you. It's not another book with yet another plotting method that you'll never use. Instead, it's a book about how you can pick and choose what beat sheet and plotting methods you like/work for you and combine them into a unique plotting template just for you. And if you're a pantser like me, this book covers that too! In fact, Annabeth breaks the classic plotter vs pantser divide into 4 categories that cover a wider range of plotting styles.
This book is incredibly thorough in covering different ways people may plot (or not) and how to work with that, not against it. I really loved that Annabeth created examples for several different genres so everyone can see how to use this book and create a plot template for themselves. I especially appreciated the fact that one of the genres was romance. So few plotting books take into account how different romance beats/plots can be from other genres and I often struggle with how to translate their advice to my own writing. Thankfully, that's not the case here and I already have several ideas on how I can use Annabeth's advice.

I’m not sure how to review this or even give it a star rating? Because so much of this book and how it hits is very dependant on the individual reading it. For me it was 4 stars, because there was a lot of good info and things that I will definitely put into practice within my own writing. For someone else, possibly someone much newer to writing, this could be a 10 star book, and completely blow their minds.
I’ve attended a good number of writing workshops, so a lot of the info in this book I’d heard before. But I really liked the way Albert presented the information. As someone who has always seen themselves as a pantser, I wasn’t sure that this was the right book for me. But she really clearly laid out different ways of plotting that can work for both pantsers and plotters.
I think what this book did best, though, was get me excited for writing again. I’ve been in a slump, struggling to find the time to write, but this has reignited my fire and I’m trying to think of when I can fit writing into my very busy schedule.
Definitely recommend this book to anyone who is looking to shake up their writing practice or who is feeling in a slump.

I'm a huge fan of Annabeth Albert, especially her Out of Uniform and Gaymers series'. So when I heard Annabeth was looking for author ARC readers for her first writing craft book I jumped at the chance.
Plot Smarter Not Harder: A Story Structure Reference for Novel writing combines all of what Annabeth has learned from the many books she's written and all the writing craft books she's soaked up along the way. Annabeth takes a deep dive into beat sheets and how they can be customized to write any genre and accommodate any writing style.
It's upbeat, informative and the opposite of prescriptive. It focuses on how to highlight what works for you and underscores how that may change between acts of the same book, over the course of a series, when you write different genres or throughout your writing career...
"Your process doesn't need to look like anyone else's. It simply needs to work for you, and that means being open to trying new things while also taking pride in your unique way of constructing a book."
Can't wait to use her tips to plot my next series!

Admittedly, this is my first "how to write a book" book. As a lifelong reader I have a million stories in my head that I want to get out. And I usually start out great, but then hit a wall I can't get past. So when one of my favorite authors writes a how to- I'm going to read it!
One of the things I loved about this book is how uncomplicated it is. You know how something just clicks in your brain? That happened with this book for me. She breaks down how to plot and where each part of the book should be at in the plot. In the first third you want to do this. In the last third you want to do this. But she also doesn't say you HAVE to do this or that. Just suggestions that work for her- and as a prolific writer I am wont to believe her- that will probably work for other people. Writers or aspiring writers.
If I find the time to finish a book I am writing, Annabeth Albert is sure to get a mention in the back.

As a baby author with a debut coming out soon, I wish I'd had this book sooner. It would have saved me a lot of hassle and headache. That said, it will absolutely be right beside me for every other book I write from here on out. Plotting isn't one-size-fits-all. Heck, it's not even one-size-fits-most. So, rather than espousing the wonders of one 'right' way to plot, Annabeth Albert helps you build a process that will work for you. The advice in the book is practical and actionable, and my neurospicy brain instantly said 'yay!'
So, if you're new to writing or if you've got an entire catalog under your belt, you're going to learn something new from this book. It's a great resource that will help you see your process in a whole new light.

This was a great resource that helped itched the plotter part of my brain. I go from plotting and pantsing to plantsing, but it provided a lot of fantastic detail with instruction broken down into bite and Act sizes.
An extra tool to have in a writer's toolshed.
Would recommend to both those starting their first book and their next.
