He’s determined to keep his distance. She’s about to ruin that plan.
Coming to Maple Valley was supposed to be temporary.
Work the summer on the orchard. Keep my head down. Find answers about the best friend I lost years ago.
Simple.
Until I met my boss.
Asher Thorne is everything I should stay away from—gruff, protective, and impossible to ignore. He’s an MMA fighter chasing his next big win.
A man who’s spent his life moving from town to town, never staying long enough for anything or anyone to matter.
The orchard is the only thing anchoring him here. And he’s made one thing clear from the start.
Mixing business with pleasure is a terrible idea.
Too bad avoiding him is impossible. Not when the way he looks at me makes my pulse trip. And not when one kiss from him makes me want things I’ve never wanted before.
Falling for him was never part of the plan.
But the closer I get to the truth about my friend’s disappearance, the more Asher insists I stop digging.
Because Maple Valley has secrets. And someone wants the past to stay buried. But I came here looking for answers.
I never expected to find the one man who could derail my plans.

This story had me equally invested in the romance and the mystery.
Maple Valley had that perfect small town atmosphere where everything feels cozy on the surface, but there’s this constant tension underneath that keeps you hooked. Claire and Asher’s dynamic worked so well for me, especially with Asher trying to keep his distance while obviously falling harder by the second.
I really liked how naturally the romance and suspense blended together. The chemistry between Claire and Asher was strong, but it was the quieter emotional moments that stood out the most. Claire’s determination to uncover the truth about her friend added real weight to the story, while Asher’s protective and guarded personality made the slow burn even better. I just found myself wishing for a little more emotional depth in certain moments to make the payoff hit even harder.
The twists genuinely surprised me, and the whole book was so easy to get lost in. Between the emotional tension, the mystery, and the romance, I stayed completely invested the entire time.
This book made me want to keep reading more from this world.

Huge thank you to R.C. Stephens & Grey’s Promotions for the ARC! 😍 All my bookish thoughts are completely my own. ✨
I love a small town romance and a good murder mystery! This book was so fun, it had amazing romance elements, with a hot MMA fighter being Claire’s new boss and their attraction to each other being electric. The plot was great, I loved the balance between the mystery and the romance and gosh all the insane plot twists and family drama. For full context on Asher’s family you can read the previous two books, but it’s not required to read this one as I followed the plot well despite not reading the first two books. But those plot twists had me flabbergasted, and it was honestly worthy of a thriller mystery. I love a workplace romance, Asher is honestly a really nice boss, although he’s a little grumpy at the start, once he starts getting whipped up by Claire, there is no going back. I also felt really moved by Claire’s character development, she was so hyper fixated on finding out what happened to her friend Sophie that she lost herself, and throughout the book she managed to find herself again, through the orchard and through Asher. This book was a fun read and I give it a 4/5
Embers and Echoes, the latest instalment in R. C. Stephens’ Maple Valley series, is easily my favourite of the series so far with a story blending small-town romance with a strong undercurrent of mystery and suspense. This time around, the focus shifts to the youngest Thorne brother, Asher, an MMA fighter who splits his time between the ring and helping run the family apple orchard. With no interest in settling down, his priorities lie in his next fight. That is, until Claire Segal arrives in town for a temporary summer job at the orchard while working on her doctorate, and he immediately senses she’s going to disrupt his carefully controlled life.
Claire’s presence in Val-Du-Lys isn’t as straightforward as it seems. She’s driven by a need for answers as six years earlier, her best friend Sophie had vanished while attempting to cross the border to escape an abusive father. Her disappearance has shaped Claire’s entire life, even leading her to study criminology and now, she’s in the very town where the smuggling operation once ran, determined to uncover the truth and finally find closure no matter the risk to herself. Something that troubles Asher and his growing concern for her adds another layer, especially as he knows she may be in far more danger than she realises when she persists in digging into secrets that some would rather keep buried.
Striking a strong balance between romance and suspense this author once again delivers a story where well-developed characters, with strong family dynamics play a central role. Seeing the Thorne brothers settled into their lives adds a sense of continuity, even as a significant revelation about their mother introduces new emotional complexity, forcing each of them to confront lingering guilt from the past. Both Asher and Claire are shaped by loss, and that shared grief adds emotional weight to their connection, so their relationship unfolds gradually, albeit with undeniable chemistry. The mystery element is handled well, maintaining a steady sense of tension throughout as Claire gets closer to the truth and her determination feels authentic, particularly as she believes she’s the last person left to get justice for her friend, especially following the death of Sophie’s mother and while the result may not be a happy ending, it offers something just as important – a sense of closure. A standout supporting character is Nico, the town’s resident bad boy. Initially positioned as the villain, his actions here add surprising depth and even a level of redemption, making him one of the more intriguing elements of the story. Overall, this is a strong addition to an addictive series
I started the book without knowing it was part of an interconnected standalone series but that didn’t stop me from enjoying this book.. Gosh the book doesn’t lag, doesn’t make us bored, but it does make us hooked with the storyline from the very first line itself... There’s something about small towns with secrets that always pulls me in and Embers and Echoes delivers that quiet intensity with a romance that burns slow and deep.. Claire arrives in Maple Valley with one goal ie to uncover the truth about her best friend’s disappearance with no distractions., no attachments and just answers. But then came Asher Thorne who is her boss and MMA fighter with a guarded past and a strict rule about not getting involved wit his employees... What starts as tension filled proximity quickly turns into something far more dangerous because the chemistry is immediate and the pull is impossible to ignore... But what truly sets this book apart is how the romance is woven into the mystery which keeps us on the edge.. As she digs deeper into her friend’s past, the town begins to feell off... Secrets linger beneath the surface, and Asher’s reluctance to let her investigate only raises more questions... The emotional core of this story hits harder than expected. It’s not just about falling in love..Iit’s about grief, closure, and facing truths people would rather keep buried. .. And Asher? Beneath that gruff, protective exterior is a man who feels deeply but trusts slowly... Asher is the kind of hero who pulls away even while protecting her. He’s built walls from years of wandering and never staying in one place, never letting anyone matter too much… until her. Their romance grows through shared silence as much as dialogue.. Every touch feels earned, not rushed and there’s a constant push-pull of “stay away from me” vs “I’ll burn the world for you”... The tension between them builds in quiet moment....Sshared glances, almost-confessions, and the kind of slow burn that makes every payoff worth it. The side characters add life to the story.. Everyone has theor own stories and maple valley is a dreamy place with sunshine people .. But underneath all of this Maple Valley holds its own secrets and don’t let outsiders near the tuth.. And I know it’s illegal to bring up Nico... But Oh god I like that guy.... There’s a saying that hot villains attract reader... And I’m not gonna shy away from that truth... Ig I’ve become a big fan of maple butter tarts ater reading the book.. Gotta try one... Overall, this is a perfect book if you love small town romance with a hint of suspense, emotionally guarded characters, protective, “stay away from me but don’t actually” heroes and romance that grows alongside a deeper storyline...
I am not okay. Like… someone come collect me because Embers & Echos just set me on fire and then had the audacity to whisper sweet nothings while I burned 🔥
Claire and Asher?? OBSESSED. Ruined. Gone. This book had me gripping my phone like it owed me money.
First of all, Maple Valley? It looks like your dreamy small-town orchard situation, all sun-warmed fruit and slow mornings… but underneath?? Secrets. Rot. Tension humming like a live wire. The vibe is “this place will hug you and then absolutely betray you,” and I ate that UP.
Claire is not just here to flirt and fall. She’s digging, she’s hurting, she’s carrying this quiet grief about her best friend that seeps into everything she does. There’s this determination in her that made me want to shake her and cheer for her at the same time. She needs answers, even when it’s clearly going to cost her.
And then there’s Asher Thorne. LORD HELP ME. This man is a walking bad decision. Gruff, closed off, built like he could snap someone in half (and probably has), but the second he starts feeling something?? It’s game over. He’s all “stay away from me” while standing way too close and looking at her like she’s the only thing in focus. Sir. Be serious.
The tension??? DISGUSTING (compliment). Every glance feels loaded. Every conversation has that edge like something’s about to tip over. And when they finally give in?? I needed to lie down. It’s not just chemistry, it’s combustion. You can feel how badly they don’t want to want each other… which obviously makes it ten times worse.
But what really got me was how the romance is tangled up in the mystery. As Claire gets closer to the truth about her friend, everything tightens. Asher pushing her to stop?? Not in a controlling-for-no-reason way, but in this “he knows more than he’s saying and it’s eating him alive” way. The tension between trust me and don’t ask questions had me internally screaming.
And the emotions?? Sneak attack. One minute I’m feral over the slow burn, next minute I’m sitting there like… wow, this actually hurts.
The ending felt earned. Not easy, not clean, but real in a way that sticks to your ribs.
Five stars, no notes, I’m emotionally compromised and would absolutely let Asher Thorne ruin my life just a little bit.
R.C. Stephens has us back in Val-Du-Lys where the romance comes with a side of suspense.
Embers and Echoes is the third book in the Maple Valley series- and to really get the whole scope of the many storylines taking place this series needs to be read in order.
Asher has always been the wanderer of the Thorne family- coming and going under the pretense of his MMA career, until his brother asks him to take a more active role in their orchard. Asher has this presence that just radiates his protective nature, he's charming and caring while also being a little bit mysterious. Then comes Claire- a criminology grad student that is chasing answers for her best friends disappearance 6 years ago, only she comes to Val-Du-Lys under the guise of being a seasonal worker for Asher's family orchard. Claire is a lot of things- she's intelligent, beautiful, stubborn and naive. She comes in searching for answers without having a lot of patience or finesse in the way she's looking- peaking both Asher's interest and worry.
I love the way that R.C. Stephens masterfully creates this slow build of suspense and the little drops of information that build the picture surrounding the mystery Claire is seeking, along with the running storyline of the Thorne family matriarch who abandoned her family many years ago causing a ripple effect in their views on relationships and love. Alongside this, the slow build of the chemistry and reluctant friendship that formed between Asher and Claire was phenomenal. I devoured every moment that lead to the combustible energy and tension that had Asher breaking every rule he had about romantic relationships especially with someone that works for his family. There are such sweet and tender moments as Asher sets out to woo Claire and give her the full boyfriend experience that she has never gotten nor he has never done before. I loved how his brothers that have settled down were helping set him up to go after the girl they could clearly see was right for him and accept her into their close knit fold as if she were family all along.
I loved how he went into full on protector mode for her while also still standing back to let her do her thing and seek out the answers that she hoped would bring her peace- even if by his own experience he knew that having those answers didn't always bring that relief. While I loved how driven and focused Claire was on this idea of justice- even if it was to the point that it had been her entire personality for years, I did find myself a little done with some of her actions. She would put herself in situations that were undoubtedly more dangerous than she anticipated, while making promises to stop digging because of private information given to her- only to then turn around and decide that she knew better than everyone else and could get answers that the authorities weren't getting for her. It was a bit frustrating- as was this feeling that the mystery and suspense was drawn out for so long only for it to wrap up in a way that felt so quick.
I still love this series though- and I'm ready to pounce on Beckett's book!
R.C. Stephens' Maple Valley series focuses on the four Thorne brothers in four interconnected stories. EMBERS AND ECHOES, book #3, is emotional, tension filled, and has a touch of drama and suspense. Secrets from the past are revealed, yet there are more to be answered. This is a forbidden, forced proximity, boss/employee, small town romance which kept me glued to the edge of my seat.
Claire Segal has come to Maple Valley to solve a mystery which has taken over her life. She's a grad student working on her thesis disguised as an apple picker. Asher Thorne, the youngest Thorne brother, is in charge of his family's orchard and is also an MMA fighter. He's always been a wanderer but has found his place running the orchard. When Claire joins the workcrew at the orchard Asher is initally wary of her reasons, yet that doesn't stop his growing attraction to her. Sparks fly between them, their chemistry is undeniable, how long will they be able to ignore their forbidden desires?
This is Val-Du-Lys, Maple Valley, and danger is always around the corner. Claire's need for answers regarding the disappearance of her friends brings suspense and danger, and Asher's need to protect her brings tension of a different kind. As their tentative friendship evolves rules are broken, and I couldn't have been happier. Claire and Asher were made for each other. Both needed to move on from the past and listen to what their heart was telling them.
Yet again R.C. Stephens has delivered a story I couldn't get enough of. It was one about learning to trust your feelings, letting loose the burdens of the past, and taking a chance at love. It was a story which encompassed strong emotions, perfectly balanced the romance with the suspense, and had characters who were completely relatable. I loved every moment of EMBERS AND ECHOES, the banter, the tension, the humour, and the romance. Asher is now my #1 Thorne brother. I can't wait to see what Bennett's story brings.
Thank you, Grey’s Promotions and R.C. Stephens, for the opportunity to be part of the ARC team!
Staying strong with balancing my TBR with at least one non-romantasy book each month, I was thrilled to be approved for Embers and Echoes. R.C. Stephens blends a slow-burn love story with a compelling mystery, following a graduate student searching for answers about her friend’s mysterious disappearance – a case that has gone unsolved for years.
Claire accepts a job on an orchard, determined to solve her best friend’s disappearance during her seasonal work in the small town on the Canadian/US border. But the job is grueling, and slipping away from the property for her detective work is nearly impossible under the sharp eyes of her boss – Asher Thorne.
Asher Thorne has taken up managing the family business while moonlighting as an MMA fighter, using the ring as an outlet for his anger and abandonment issues left in the wake of his mother leaving the family years ago. He lives by strict set of rules – stay focused, put family first, and never mix business with pleasure. Naturally, the last rule is tossed out the window when Claire nearly runs him over with her car during their first encounter.
As Claire and Asher spend long hours in the orchard together, an undeniable pull begins to form between them. Clarie came here with the goal of finding answers, not to be sidetracked by a handsome face and large muscles. Meanwhile, Asher, who has never spent enough time in one spot to put down roots, finds it increasingly harder to ignore that Claire’s stay in his town is only temporary.
Sparks fly and the tension heats up as Claire edges closer to the truth she’s been looking for, while falling for her boss along the way. Embers and Echoes is a perfect vacation read and one that I ate up in one sitting on a long flight. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy for your next upcoming getaway – releasing April May 26th!
You might think that a series called Maple Valley would be soft, sweet, and easy to fall into. The kind of romance that feels gentle and comforting. But R.C. Stephens quietly shifts that expectation, delivering a story that still has warmth, but is layered with emotion, quiet tension, and a thread of suspense that lingers.
Embers and Echoes, book three in the series, leans into that balance beautifully. It’s a true slow burn, the kind that unfolds gently and gives you time to really feel everything the characters are carrying. There’s a softness to the storytelling, but underneath it is something deeper that keeps you completely invested.
Claire arrives in Maple Valley searching for answers about her best friend who disappeared years ago. It’s not just a fresh start, it’s something far more personal. She takes a job at the Orchards, and that’s where she meets Asher… her new boss.
Asher is that quiet, brooding presence, an MMA fighter with a past that seems to sit heavily on his shoulders. There’s a restraint to him, a sense that he’s holding parts of himself back, and it makes every interaction with Claire feel meaningful. Their connection isn’t rushed. It builds slowly, through small moments, unspoken understanding, and a growing pull neither of them can quite ignore.
What really stands out is how Claire’s search shapes everything. The grief, the unanswered questions, the hope that she might finally uncover the truth… it all adds a layer of emotion that runs through the entire story. It gives weight to her choices and makes her journey feel incredibly real.
The romance and suspense blend so naturally together. Neither overpowers the other. Instead, they move side by side, with Claire and Asher’s relationship growing in the midst of uncertainty and long-buried secrets.
And the ending felt just right. Emotional, meaningful, and quietly powerful without needing to overdo it. The answers Claire has been searching for carry real impact, and you feel just how much it matters to her.
This isn’t just a small-town romance. It’s softer than you might expect in places, but also deeper. A story of love, loss, and finding something steady in the middle of it all.
This story gripped me from the very first page and I didn't shut it until I finished it. I blame you Author for my lack of sleep. It's a boss/employee, MMA fighter, a bit of mystery, a lot of suspense, more tension and slow burn at least for the first half of the book, an inexperienced but stubborn woman, a protective hero who used to be a bad boy, set in an orchard in a small town. Heroine, Claire, is determined to find some answers after her best friend's disapperance 6 years prior. She makes her research and she comes back to the place where she last saw her in order to find the truth whatever it is, by taking a job in an orchard. Hero, Asher, who manages the orchard, is a MMA fighter and really protective for anyone who needs help mostly due to his troubled childhood. While reading the first meeting I thought Asher would be some kind of butt but in the end I would have described him more as a golder retriever. I loved, loved, loved their banter and how Claire wasn't letting anything get into her way in finding answers. But bare in mind that even though she was stubborn and determined she wasn't reckless and she actually listened when Asher warned her of the dangers that were lurking. I loved how they refused to act on their attraction firstly but then succubing to it in a very smooth way that it really felt natural. The emotional growth for both characters is there and it made me feel content in a way. They are there for each other and even though everything is evolving in the span of a couple of months, it doesn't feel rushed at all. My heart broke for some revelations towards the end but I feel the story concluded as it should be. Family supporting either by blood or choice. I received this arc and this is my honest opinion.
Embers and Echoes: Maple Valley was such an emotional, quietly powerful read for me. I’m landing at 4 stars because while it didn’t completely wreck me, it absolutely kept me invested from start to finish—and I really appreciated the depth of the story.
This one has such a compelling mix of small-town romance, second chances, grief/trauma healing, and a touch of suspense, which worked so well together. I especially loved the suspense element woven throughout—it added just enough tension to keep me turning the pages and gave the story an extra layer beyond the romance.
At its heart, though, this book is about grief and not being able to move on, and that really hit. Claire is still carrying the weight of losing her best friend, who disappeared at just sixteen, and you can feel how much that loss has shaped her life. It’s not glossed over or rushed, which I appreciated—it felt real and messy in the best way.
One of my favorite parts was watching Claire begin to find herself again through working at the Maple Valley orchard. There’s something so comforting and symbolic about that setting, and it mirrors her healing so beautifully. Her growth felt gradual and believable, and I loved seeing her start to open herself back up to life again.
The romance is sweet and adds a nice emotional layer, but for me, this was really Claire’s story—about healing, growth, and learning that moving forward doesn’t mean leaving someone behind.
If you love emotional small-town romances with healing arcs, a hint of mystery, and strong character growth, this one is definitely worth picking up.
It is nice to be back in Maple Valley! I really liked the 1st one and though I missed the second book it felt so familiar and immersive to be back! It was like I had never left!
I love RC Stephens’ style and storytelling. There’s no playing, we have a story to tell, a mystery to solve, compelling and fierce characters! They don’t shy from perusing their goals and they know what they want! I was instantly hooked, even more so than the first one!
Claire & Asher are such a pair and I loved how instantaneously I connected to them even though their story is nothing I’ve ever been through. However they just make sense and you don’t need much to know it’s true.
I love Claire’s spunk and determination. She’s loyal to a fault, and I know that I would go to the ends of the world for my best friend. She’s fearless in her own way and Asher just gives her even more purpose.
Asher’s life was building to this moment. From their family drama to finding his place in Maple Valley and making it his own, to finding that someone he could share it with. I love a strong man who’s not afraid to admit he might be wrong about his stance in life when he sees it can make it better.
The mystery is really nicely woven as the overarching plot. It’s all connected and everyone has their part to play. If you’re looking for a bingeable series with action, crime and a connected found family who always have their owns back. Add some well measured spice in there and you won’t be able to stop!
Thank you RC for bringing me into Maple Valley, it’s been a ride I loved! Looking forward to exploring more of your work in the future!
Asher, finally ready to settle down at Maple Valley Claire, she came to Maple Valley with a purpose
Asher, Claire and an unexpected romance
This story follows Asher and Claire and gives us a romance that nobody saw coming. Claire came to Maple Valley with a purpose and got more than she thought. She found the one person she never expected, the one she would fall for. Asher is finally at a point in life where he is ready to settle down and take over the orchard at his family's farm. When a new employee arrives for a limited time Asher is fascinated and intrigued. Because Claire clearly is here for something else. Claire is on a mission to find out what happened to her best friend and searches for answers, something that comes with danger in Maple Valley. And Asher can’t hide his concern and begins to realise that he feels more than just the usual care for an employee. Slowly both become closer and get involved in each other's lives. And with everything going on that leaves one big question. What stays when everything else has an answer? A beautiful romance between two scarred characters that each have a package to carry. A supportive family with its own heavy past found friends that support you every step of the way.
Embers and Echoes: Maple Valley by R.C. Stephens, provided via Grey’s Promotions, is an emotionally gripping small-town romance mixed with suspense and mystery that completely kept me invested from beginning to end.
The story follows Claire, who returns to Maple Valley for the summer to work at her family’s orchard while searching for answers connected to the disappearance of her best friend Sophie six years earlier after attempting to cross the border with her abusive father.
That event shaped Claire’s life in such a major way, and the emotional weight surrounding the mystery added so much depth to the story.
What stood out most to me was how well the book balanced the romance and mystery elements together. The suspense genuinely kept me on edge because every new piece of information only deepened the secrets surrounding Sophie’s disappearance.
Asher was such a strong MMC. As an MMA fighter and Claire’s boss at the orchard, he brought so much tension and emotional intensity to the story while still feeling protective and emotionally layered.
The slow-burn chemistry between Claire and Asher worked so well because their connection developed naturally alongside the emotional and suspenseful storyline.
Overall, Embers and Echoes: Maple Valley is a beautifully balanced small-town romance filled with mystery, emotional tension, suspense, and relationship development that makes it impossible not to keep turning the pages.
I’ve been reading this characters since the very first book and it such an honor to read now Asher’s book 😩❤️ it was so great reading him being the traveling brother, always in the move, looking after the best challenge, to now being the steady man that loves working at the orchard and being close to his family, and it was such a delight reading how he fell for Claire 🥹💖
Claire arrived in Maple Valley looking for answers because she lost her best friend six years ago when she was trying to run away from her father, and the last time Claire saw her was in the same little two she’s now going to work in, and even when she tried to not fall for Asher, she just couldn’t help it, because Asher was there for her every step of the way, taking care for her, protecting her and always supporting her 💖
They were exactly what they needed when they didn’t even know it, they both helped each other to find that missing piece in their lives, and it was so beautiful to read how they found each other 😩💖 I also loved reading those glimpses of Elyna and Phoenix and Eric and Harmony ❤️
And of course my heart broke a little when Claire found the answers she was looking for 😭💔 even when I suspected what happened it was sad to read it, but thankfully she had Asher by her side ✨
This was such a quick, engaging read with just the right mix of romance, suspense, and family dynamics.
Claire takes a summer job at the Val-Du-Lys orchard while continuing her studies in criminology, driven by the need to uncover the truth behind her best friend’s disappearance after fleeing an abusive home. Her determination to find answers adds a quiet intensity to her character that I really liked.
Asher Thorne, one of the orchard managers (and an MMA fighter 🔥), is immediately drawn into her world after finding her asking dangerous questions in a pub. His protective instincts kick in fast, especially when Claire starts digging into the past and looking for answers from Nico, now a mob boss who may hold key information.
The chemistry between Claire and Asher builds beautifully through lingering looks, quiet moments, and growing trust. I loved seeing their connection develop, especially with Asher’s softer, romantic side. From a private brewery date to a lakeside picnic by the fire, he really won me over.
There’s also an emotional layer added through the Thorne family, particularly the revelations about their mother, which adds depth and heartbreak to the overall series.
The orchard setting, the banter with coworkers, and the strong family bonds between the brothers and their wives made this story feel warm and grounded, even with the suspenseful elements.
Overall, a well-balanced, easy read with heart, tension, and a swoony romance.
Claire and Asher’s story was a great small-town romance. Asher is an MMA fighter but he also helps out his family with running their apple orchard. He has no interest in settling down, until Claire comes into his life.
Claire is in town for a reason, she is looking for answers after her best friend Sophie disappeared while trying to get away from her abusive father. The disappearance shaped Claire’s life and she is determined to find out the truth about what happened. Asher is concerned for her and works to try to keep her safe.
I loved the romance and the suspense in this story it was woven together wonderfully. The characters were well written, and there were strong family dynamics. Claire and Asher are formed by loss, but the Thorne brothers’ loss of their mother adds another layer to the story. The relationship between these two characters grows slowly but there is undeniable chemistry between them. The story kept me hooked, wanted to know what happens next and there were some plot twists that kept me wanting more. This was a great addition to this series, and I am excited to see what this author has in store for us next.
Received ARC from author and Grey’s Promotions for honest review.
Maple Valley holds many secrets, many pasts and many unknowns. When Claire leaves her life behind to move to Maple Valley and dig around for answers that have haunted her for the last years, she meets the intense Asher Thorne, her new boss at the orchards and an MMA fighter with a hidden heart of gold. Asher is immediately drawn to Claire, but refuses to let his attraction win over his reasoning. He carries the weight of his family past and struggles to find balance in his life, choosing to pour his anger into fighting inside a cage. When Claire keeps burrowing herself into his life, he learns how to breathe and let go for the first time. He also learns how to prioritize himself and the ones he loves. Unfortunately, while their connection grows, so die the danger around them. Embers and Echoes is the third book in the series and like always, R.C. Stephens gives us deep emotional growth, life altering events and angst combined with the most amazing dedication, support and true love. This story proves that the right answers aren’t always where you might think, but in the people who love you and choose you every step of the way. Thank you for the ARC.
Embers and Echoes is a fantastic read. I loved this so much. This is Ashers book. Asher runs the family orchard and in his spare time is a MMA fighter. He has his rules about his workers but is very fair. He is a little mysterious but once you unravel him you are going to fall hard. Claire is new in town and working on her masters in criminology. The small town of Val-Du-Lys is one of the last places Claire's friend has been seen. Claire is looking for answers and tries her hand at working in the orchard. I love the tension between Asher and Claire is amazing. I love the slow burn as Asher tries to protect Claire from asking too many questions. I love the chemistry build between Claire and Asher. They balance each other so well. I love how the Thorne family is so close and all just want justice and answers. We're slowly getting the answers to what dangers in Maple Valley are lurking and why. I could not get enough of this one. I love being in Maple Valley and in the town of Val-Du-Lys so much. I cannot wait for more to come and watch another member ot the Thorne family fall. You need to read this today.
5 ⭐️ 📖-Embers and Echoes by R.C. Stephens I love a good romantic suspense and R.C. Stephens killed it with this one! Okay running to go read the books before this one seeing them and hearing about the brothers and their happy ever after in this book makes me want to start from the beginning! This book follows Claire and Asher. Claire comes to Maple Valley to look for a friend of hers that disappeared years ago and she wants answers to what happened. Asher has finally decided to set roots down for once’s and he buys an orchard in Maple Valley he also teaches at the community center there. I have to admit I loved how dedicated Claire was to getting answers but she has way more balls than I do on bravery so I agreed with Asher and understood why he didn’t like her going on her own without him. Asher and Claire both have feelings for each other it scares Asher he is afraid Claire will do something to get her hurt and he loses her forever and Claire is putting love on hold till she gets the answers she came for. This book will have you on a roller coaster of emotions from betrayal to redemption and all the in between!
Okay this one had me hooked way more than I expected 👀
Small town romance with a mystery?? say less. Claire comes in focused on finding answers about her best friend and then boom… Asher enters and messes up her whole plan 😩
Asher is that grumpy, protective type who swears he doesn’t want anything serious but we all know how that goes 😂 and the tension between them?? so good. It’s a slow burn but it actually feels real, like every moment builds up to something.
What I really liked is that it wasn’t just romance. The mystery part kept me locked in. There were twists, secrets, and that feeling like something is off in the town the whole time.
Claire’s growth stood out too. You can feel how much she’s been carrying and watching her slowly find herself again was really good.
Also… lowkey the side characters had me curious 👀 especially Nico, I’m not even gonna lie lol
You don’t have to read the other books to enjoy this, I didn’t and still followed everything just fine.
If you like small town, grumpy MMC, slow burn, and a little suspense mixed in… you’ll like this one 💕
THIS!!!!! 😭😭😭😭 I thought Phoenix was my fav brother but Asher takes the cake.
Thinking he’s undeserving from everyone in life and not deserving of love due to his mom taking off, Asher is brought back to have his heart opened up by someone seeking the truth from years past. He breaks his one rule for her and realizes the fight is over for him.
Claire is trying to find out what happened to her best friend years ago while trying to escape her dad. She finds out her friend was avenged, but at what price? Putting trust in someone she knows is not trustworthy and could hurt her. All the while, she is working and discovers her boss is a amateur MMA fighter and a protective alpha. 🥵 but can she trust him with her heart… AND her body??
The only part that bugs me is the connection between Claire and Jamie. There is no closure there. Soleil bugged me when she flirted with Asher knowing he was with Claire. Grrr.. Also I am sooooo curious what happens to Nico.
I could read this over and over again!! Their connection was just 🔥!!!
Asher is the Thorne sibling I've been hankering to read about since we first met him. Barefooted MMA fighter back in Maple Valley to help on the family Orchard, he's the second youngest Thorne, always been a bit of a wonderer but he's finally finding his footing back home. Claire is an outside to Maple Valley, using seasonal work on the Orchard as a guise for her real reason for being there. She's asking questions and raising far too many eyebrows for a seasonal worker. I was so invested in Asher and Claire's relationship and how it would develop because who know the Grumpy Thorne was going to smash his own rules and fall hard and fast - not me! Trying to uncover the truth hidden in Maple Valley meant I read this in one sitting, could not put this book down - R.C Stephens kept the tension going with the twists. Can't wait to get back to Maple Valley already, is it Becket's turn yet?!
I voluntarily reviewed a free advance copy of this book provided by the author. The opinions expressed are my own.
Embers and Echoes is the third book in RC Stephens romantic suspense series featuring the Throne Brothers of Val-Du-Lys. This book follows Claire as she arrives in Val-Du-Lys for a job at Maple Valley while she looks for answers to her friend’s disappearance years ago. Asher has always been bit of a wander but recently took over the orchard and began teaching classes at the community center. From their first accidentally meeting, Claire and Asher have been drawn to each other.
Claire is determined to find answers even going places that make Asher wary for her safety because he is cares for her deeply which scares him since that’s something he’s never experienced before. Asher brings up feelings and plans she’s put on hold while looking for answers and that has both of them looking at the future together.
I enjoyed seeing the brothers continue to live their happily ever afters and I’m glad questions were answered even if it wasn’t what they had hoped for.
Thank you @rc_stephens_author and @greyspromo for this eARC in exchange for my honest feedback
𝐄𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐞𝐬 is the third book in the Maple Valley series by R.C. Stephens, featuring an emotional strangers to enemies to lovers romance for Asher and Claire. She’s a criminology student working on a thesis, who takes a job at his orchard in order to solve a critical mystery. Asher was the wanderer Thorne… the MMA fighter who seems to have finally hit his stride in the family apple orchard. He just wasn’t prepared for the chemistry and intrigue that would come with the arrival of his newest employee. I really enjoyed the forbidden tension and sparks between them, the clear emotion behind Claire’s mission, the banter, and the small town charm that Maple Valley delivered along with the dangerous vibes. It was a fun dichotomy to read. The Thorne family was all back to add to the entertainment and the twists. I was left with a question or two that I’m hoping will be answered in Becket’s book, which I look forward to reading!
I received a free ARC, and am leaving this review voluntarily. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶🌶
This time we follow Asher the younger brother of the Thorne family. A MMA fighter and manager of the family orchard.
Claire has never got over losing contact with her childhood best friend. Years ago, her friend tried to get over the boarder to escape her abusive father, her mum couldn't afford to come with her, but the night she left she was never heard of again, and Claire has been solely focused on getting answers and from a town that has more secrets than they know what to do with, but Claire is determined to uncover the truth and seek justice for her friend.
Claire takes a seasonal job at the Orchard and meets Asher who seems to push all her buttons from the very first minute.
Claire is not very subtle when she starts making enquiries and is warned off early on, but she just can't let it go...
The thread throughout this book and series continues and builds from the crimes the mafia family in the town, so I would recommend these books are read in order so there is no confusion regarding the over arching plot.
I do love a small town romance with some suspense! And this book gave me both.
I didn’t realize until reading a little that this was an interconnected standalone and now I need to go back and read the other. There was some information from a previous book mentioned that I would have liked to know about but it didn’t hamper my ability to read and enjoy the book.
For the most part, I felt like the book had really good pacing. However, there were some spots that I felt could have gone a little faster.
I think I also expected the ending to be more dramatic. This is possibly my own feeling considering how other similar books go so I would take that with a grain of salt
Both Claire and Asher were good characters. I liked watching how Claire went from living for finding out about her friend’s fate to living for herself. And it was nice to see Asher go from somewhat listless to more settled and certain with his decision to work on the orchard more.
Thank you to R. C. Stephens and Greys Promotions for the ARC!!!
Embers and Echoes is MMA fighter Asher Thorne and Claire’s small town, romantic suspense story. It’s book three in the Maple Valley Series set in the small town of the same name where life isn’t always as it seems. Claire has moved to Maple Falls after looking for answers most of her life. Starting a new job at the Orchards the last thing she needs is an attraction for her new boss but we can’t always control our feelings. From the moment they meet sparks fly but as she gets under Asher’s skin he struggles to keep his life on an even keel and he chooses cage fighting to vent his anger. So what happens when danger finds them and can he keep Claire safe. This is an emotional read that touched me on so many levels, it’s about learning to move on from the past, learning to trust your feelings and take a leap of faith. The romance and the suspense blend together as this couple take a chance on love. This is a well written, entertaining story that captivated me.
Claire Segal had taken the job at the Maple Valley orchard to get some answers about what had happened to her best friend Sophie when she disappeared after leaving Val-Du-Lys trying to cross the border. Claire never expected to be attracted to her new boss Asher Thorne at the orchard because they were so different because she was driven to get some answers while Asher has finally returned home to Val-Du-Lys to manage the family orchard trying excise his demons by MMA fighting.
I really liked how the relationship between Claire and Asher grew slowly while they worked together at the orchard supporting each other.
You really need to read the other books in the Maple Valley series first because there is so much that happens in the earlier books that get answered in Embers and Echoes.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the author and Grey's Promotions. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A best friend goes missing, a mother leaves behind her children and the mysteries continue as we head back to the Maple Valley Orchard. This interconnected series has been so entertaining, capturing my attention from the beginning of every story. Asher and Claire's story is no different. Each couple brings another piece to solving the puzzles that shadow the town the Thorne family inhabits. Claire as an outsider looking to work the orchard for the summer season brings a new piece when word gets out she's searching for some who disappeared and their last known location was near Val-du-Lys. When Asher discovers this he goes into protector mode. But Claire won't be deterred. Tensions are high, family bonds are tested, lies of omission are discovered and guilt becomes overwhelming for some. Forgiveness takes time, but so does finding where you belong. Great read hoping there is more to come. I have voluntarily left this review.
