The second installment of the Pendragon Rising Saga!
The heir has been found. The kingdom is already turning against him.
With Arthur dead and Mordred ruling through fear, Arion Pendragon is forced into the open; hailed as hope by some, hunted as a threat by many. Burdened by prophecy and untested power, Arion must decide whether he will run from his legacy… or claim it.
When word reaches them that Merlin is alive, imprisoned deep within the cursed caverns of Tigguo Cobauc, Arion and his companions risk everything to free him. But wielding Prydwen, Arthur’s legendary shield, comes at a terrible cost; and the deeper they descend, the more the darkness fights back.
As ancient magic stirs and unseen forces tighten their grip, loyalties are strained, secrets surface, and Mordred’s cruelty begins to reveal the true nature of his reign.
The path to the throne is no longer a matter of destiny.

If you're into: ✅Found Family ✅Chosen One ✅Mysterious relic they need to defeat the villain.
Then I think this book is for you!
When I say I was waiting for this I meant I was WAITINGGGGGG for this book to come out, like that new episode that you wait for on that particular TV show but it went on hiatus for a month and a half. And when I say I ate this up, I mean I finished it under 30 mins bc WOW.
Characters: •My love for Lancelot in this book has grown a lot more. I mean he's not the main focus of the book but he really does give off Sirius Black vibes from HP. Not only is his best friend dead, he's constantly looking out for Arion and reminiscing about the old days, do you see the Sirius blackness there 😭.
I also love how they really do try to work together, as a team. If one is down the other takes his place vise versa knowing that if they go down the other will/would do the same for them. •They really should work on their observation skills though, twice or thrice did a dark hooded figure magically drop down behind them and THEY DON'T KNOW?! ok yes I'll calm down.
Pacing: I do think the pacing on this is quite fast, semi short chapters, action packed so it's quite easy to get through
Ending: I won't say anything bout that, for spoilers sake at least, but let's just say I'm intrigued and I do implore you Mr. Author pls finish book 3 😔. I'm joking, take your time haha.
I really enjoyed this installment—even more than the first, I think! One thing I especially appreciate about this series is that while the books are smaller in size, they pick up seamlessly exactly where the previous story left off. Their length makes the reading experience feel much less intimidating; because the plot is so engaging, it’s the kind of book you could easily finish in a single sitting.
Interestingly, the first book in this series was my very first introduction to Arthurian legend. It sparked such an interest that I’ve since started another series tied to the same lore. I think this series is a perfect entry point for anyone new to the fantasy genre or those looking to dip their toes into Arthurian fantasy for the first time.
Thank you J.A. Graham for allowing me to be a part of your ARC team again. I look forward to book three!
This book given to me as an ARC here is my honest and voluntarily review. 3.75⭐️This is book 2 a very good continuation of this series. The fantasy elements and world building add depth without overwhelming the main storyline and also the short chapters filled with battles, challenges, and emotional moments. Fast paced can’t wait for book 3 will definitely continue this series.
J.A. Graham has done it again. If The Heir of the Lance was about finding the spark of destiny, The Bearer of the Shield is about the grueling, often painful reality of what it means to actually carry that spark through a world that wants to blow it out.
This sequel feels much darker and more claustrophobic than the first. We move from the open tournaments and the sanctuary of Dunholm into "Wanted" posters, murky rivers, and literal Viking tombs. Graham leans heavily into the "found family" trope here, and it’s the heartbeat of the book. The banter between Van and Shyla remains a highlight, providing much-needed levity when they are literally walking through "guests of the dead".
Arion’s journey in this book is masterfully handled. He isn't a "Chosen One" who suddenly becomes a god. In fact, his greatest weapon, the lance Ron, fails him exactly when he needs it most. Seeing him have to rely on his own grit and the new, physically taxing power of the shield Prydwen adds a layer of vulnerability that makes him so much more human. The shield isn't just a defensive tool; it’s a metaphor for the burden of leadership—it protects everyone else, but it crushes the person holding it.
The introduction of Morgan le Fay as the puppet master behind Mordred elevates the threat level. She isn't just a villain; she’s a force of nature who has rendered the legendary Merlin a "battered old man". The encounter with Gaheris in Sherwood is a standout scene, showcasing the tragic fallout of the Round Table’s collapse and how "courage" wasn't enough to save the kingdom the first time around.
The way magic interacts with the environment—like Van’s flames catching the forest on fire or the shadows fighting back against the shield feels grounded and dangerous.
The escape from Eoforwic is high-octane and sets a frantic pace that rarely lets up.
Shyla’s sacrifice in the scorpion pit genuinely hurt to read. It showed that Arion’s companions aren't just sidekicks; they are stakeholders in this destiny who pay a real price.
At times, the pacing in the middle (the river trek) felt a bit slow, but it served to build the dread of being "hunted".
A visceral, humanized take on Arthurian myth. Graham reminds us that being a hero isn't about the gold on your armor, but about who stands beside you when the lights go out. If you like The Witcher’s grit mixed with Lord of the Rings’ sense of journey, pick this up.
Can’t wait for Book 3!

I loved the first book in the series Pendragon Rising. A YA Arthurian retelling that tells the story of what happened after the fall of King Arthur. A gripping story with trials, a lost heir and his journey to escape the wrath of the king. My expectations were sky-high.
And my god, this book delivered! The second book picks up immediately were the first one stopped. Arion, the long lost heir, is on the run for Mordred. A king that doesn’t rule with love but with fear. Together with his friends they set of on a quest to find Merlin. What follows is a very fast paced story filled with well written (clean) action. Its about friendship, bearing the load together and about not giving up. Besides the friendships that deepen, there is a lot of character growth. Making me fall in love with all of them all over again. Although Van, my favorite character from the first book, is still my favorite.
During their quest they are faced with lots of different challenges. There is something happening around every corner and I was at the edge of my seat with almost every page.
The only bone I have to pick with the writer is that this story was too short. I would have loved it to be double the length. Also, when you foreshadow a spider, please, don’t change it into what you did! Or maybe listen to Van and make it a cuddly rabbit next time?!
If you like YA (younger YA) and Arthurian retellings, you must read this series! I cant wait till the third book comes out although it is going to be hard to top this one! 5 stars all the way through!
Favorite quote: Mordred doesn’t rule because he is loved. He rules because he controls what people think. He controls with fear and when people are scared, they follow the loudest voice.
This is a 3.5 for me. The Bearer of the Shield is a thrilling, high-paced sequel that keeps you on the edge of your seat for most of the ride. J.A. Graham does an excellent job pulling readers back into the world with intense action and engaging characters. The momentum built from the first book carries strong through much of the story, and the stakes feel higher than ever. My biggest critique is that the middle section slows down considerably, interrupting the swift pacing that made the beginning so exciting. It almost feels like hitting the brakes after a long sprint, and it took some time for the story to regain that energy. Still, the overall narrative is compelling, and I genuinely enjoyed where the story went. It’s a worthy sequel, and I’m definitely looking forward to continuing with the next installment—hopefully with the consistent pacing that made the first book so hard to put down.
This is the second book in the Pendragon Rising series and I have to say this is every bit as good as the first, if not better! The story starts off straight from the last book, with our heroes heading off to find someone thought long dead (I'm not giving anything away here - SPOILERS!). Along the way, they run into many dangers and threats and because of that it is a faced paced, punchy read.
The friendship between Arion, Shyla and Van is strengthened in this book and it's lovely to see them determined to support each other when things get tough - the shield is a great metaphor for that! Lancelot continues his role as mentor to Arion and the others and I have to say I like this twist as it's usually Merlin who is shown as the mentor in Arthurian tales.
As the story continues the lore and mythology of the world J. A. Graham has created increases and we, as the reader, discover things alongside Arion and his friends - I never get the sense of info dumping in these books.
Just a quick word about the villains - we get more of an insight into the darker side of these stories in this book (there are some genuinely creepy moment in the caves) and I really hope that this continues in the rest of the series.
I received an Advanced Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Book 2 in the Pendragon Rising Saga continues with the found family of warriors working together and learning to trust to their instincts. When any one member of the group starts to falter in strength or spirit the others step up, to offer help and encouragement. And in doing so they realize that they all have the capabilities to continue the fight against evil. And with the newest member of the group and King Arthur's shield added to their arsenal the saga will continue..... I am looking forward to book 3
This book continues the adventures of Arion and his friends as they search to find Merlin. Their voyage is not an easy one and they are faced with many trials along their way.
This story really shows the value of team work and believing in oneself. By sticking together and working as a team, they are able to achieve anything. Their journeys continue to build their bond and their confidence in each other.
This was a quick, fun read and one that I definitely recommend if you enjoy Arthurian retellings!
✨I love this YA Fantasy series! This is the second installment in the Pendragon Rising series and I have to say J.A. Graham has done it again. I am loving the growth in the characters and seeing how their bond grows on their journey. With the addition of Morgan Le Fay, Mordred’s Enchantress, it has given it a more mystical vibe for me. I cannot wait to see where these 4, now 5 with Merlin, end up.✨
such a stunning continuation to this story. this is written so beautifully that you can't put it down. This is perfect for young readers that love adventures. a great book to get kids in to reading. I love the story line and the way the characters rely on each other to get through the problems. I will be continuing this story happily.
The heir is still on the run from Mordred and the crew is searching for Merlin! This series really makes me want to learn more about Arthurian legends. I'll definitely plan to continue the series to see where the story goes.
The second book in the series continues the heir of Arthur’s quest against Mordred. This one introduces us to the Tigguo Cobuac and the prison of Merlin. It’s a fast and fun weekend read with lots of magical weapons and implements. The writing clips along quickly and I’m looking forward to book 3.
