There is murder in the air on the island of Niflheim. But the victims don’t stay dead for long.
When Ebenezer Munch's mother passes away, his father sends him to Niflheim island to live under the care of his grandfather. But Niflheim is not what it seems - darker forces are at work, and it is not long before Eben is caught up in something he doesn't yet understand.
Firstly, I can't believe this is a debut novel! It was well written, compelling and immersive. The descriptions of the island of Niflheim were especially well done, and I had no trouble imagining the island that Eben comes to call home. The dark, the snow, the mixture of locations all combined together to form a rich vision of life on this remote island.
Eben himself undergoes some pretty intense character development, and I loved seeing him slowly come to realise more of who he is and who he wants to be. He is far from perfect, and so very young - he felt incredibly believable to me. He reminded me of when I was a teen and I felt like I knew what I wanted until I had to confront situations and people who challenged me. I loved how he changed as the book progressed.
The central narrative is dark - we have murder, resurrected corpses and vampires to contend with, as well as bullying, parental death and abandonment - the book touches on some pretty dark themes! Integral to the story are Norse myths and legends - tales of giants and gateways to the underworld. I found the whole book fascinating - I loved the combination of strong character development running alongside ancient folktales. The ending was left somewhat open too - I really hope this means a sequel!
