2 bodies found and the killer left former NYPD detective Jack Karver’s business card on one of them at the scene. I mean, that’s certainly one way to send a message - and is the catalyst for a gritty, fast-moving police procedural where it quickly becomes clear this killer isn’t choosing victims at random.

I really liked how this balanced the investigation itself with the more personal side of things surrounding Jack and his family. The deeper the case went, the more it felt like somebody was deliberately pulling pieces from Jack’s past back into the spotlight, and that underlying tension kept me hooked the whole way through.

This isn’t really a huge twist-after-twist kind of thriller, but more the type of crime thriller where the pressure keeps building chapter by chapter as the investigation closes in from all directions. It made for a really bingeable read and I flew through it wanting to see how everything tied together.

Jack was also a really solid lead character and I’m definitely keen to continue on with this series.

Wild ride from beginning to end!

Let me preface this by saying I don't read crime thrillers, I'm not a true crime fan, and action movies bore me to tears.
But I thoroughly enjoyed this, it read like something that could be turned into a TV series.
It's to the point without being rushed or incomplete, it is deceptive without being long winded and overworked.
The main Character is an absolute smart mouth, who could probably do with keeping his damn mouth shut but it adds to his likability.
All the characters have depth which amazing considering how many characters you meet on your reading journey.
If you like crime stories, I highly recommend you put this on your list right now, don't sleep on it.

Vengeance keeps its own winter.

Cold Vengeance by Jonathan Ben-Ron has all the makings of a gripping crime thriller movie. Fast-paced, tense, and packed with suspicion, this was the kind of book that keeps you second-guessing everyone.

The story follows ex-cop John Karver, whose name becomes linked to a brutal double homicide. As more bodies begin to pile up, Karver finds himself racing against the clock to uncover not only who is behind the killings, but why he seems connected to them in the first place.

At one point I became suspicious of almost everyone, even the people who claimed to be on Karver’s side. I kept waiting for that betrayal that often pops up in these kind of crime thrillers, which definitely kept me guessing along the way.

Without a doubt, my favourite thing about this book was John Karver’s sense of humour. I loved the dark “if you don’t laugh, you’ll cry” humour, which felt very fitting for someone in law enforcement and added a lot of personality to the story.

I also really enjoyed the character development surrounding Karver’s marriage. His intelligent lawyer wife added to the story, and I liked seeing their relationship woven throughout the book.

And honestly, one cannot go past the best character in the book - Hudson, Karver’s trusty sidekick 🐶

If you enjoy crime thrillers filled with murder investigations, conspiracy, dark humour, and a main character you can genuinely root for, this one is worth checking out.

Jack Karver retired from the NYPD courtesy of a bullet to the hip.
He's your run-of-the-mill, smart-mouth, ex-cop who finds himself in quite the situation when his business card is left on the chest of a dead teenager. Then, his fingerprints on a dead jogger. Bodies keep dropping, all connected to a past case - a school shooting in Ridgewell, NC. While Jack tries to uncover who is setting him up, he stumbles upon a cover up much deeper than a single school shooting. Can he expose the truth before he ends up behind bars, or worse?

This is a crime thriller that is the first in a series about ex-NYPD Detective Jack Karver. Karver likes to hide behind his sense of humor but this case can’t be solved with a joke. It goes DEEP, and not only is Karver’s life and liberty at stake, his wife Claire and their children are no danger too.

To be honest, this book may be a little hard for some people to read as it involves an elementary school shooting. While this portion isn’t extremely detailed, this case does revolve around this incident.

This book really highlights a big problem in America - the ties between gun violence and capitalism. It will have your heart rate climbing, but will also make you chuckle at some of Jack’s jokes (that don’t always land).

Final note - my favorite character by far was Hudson 🐶🐾 - if anything happens to him in this series, I will riot!

Cold Vengeance: A Jack Karver Crime Thriller by Jonathan Ben-Ron is a tense, fast-paced crime thriller that leans heavily into psychological stakes and personal vendetta, making it a strong opening to the Jack Karver series.

What immediately stands out is the hook—a killer leaving Jack Karver’s NYPD business card on victims. It’s a simple but highly effective device that creates instant intrigue and urgency. From the very beginning, the story positions Karver not just as an investigator, but as a target, which raises the emotional stakes significantly.

Karver himself is a compelling protagonist. As a former NYPD detective trying to live a quieter life, he embodies the classic “pulled back into the past” trope—but it works well here because of the personal cost involved. His struggle isn’t just about solving the case; it’s about protecting his family and confronting a past he thought was buried. This dual tension—external danger and internal conflict—adds depth to the narrative.

The novel excels in its pacing and structure. The escalating pattern of murders, each drawing closer to Karver, creates a tightening sense of inevitability. The idea that the victims are part of a larger message rather than random targets gives the story a layered mystery, encouraging readers to piece together the connections alongside the protagonist.

Another strong element is the family dynamic, particularly between Karver and his wife Claire. Their strained relationship adds emotional realism to the story. Claire represents the desire for stability and normalcy, while Karver is pulled toward chaos and unfinished business. This conflict grounds the thriller in something human, making the stakes feel more personal and immediate.

The action sequences—stakeouts, confrontations, and sudden bursts of violence—are written to keep momentum high. At the same time, the psychological aspect of being hunted by someone who knows your past gives the story a darker, more suspenseful edge.

Thematically, the book explores guilt, accountability, and the idea that the past never truly stays buried. The killer’s actions force Karver to confront not just what happened before, but what it means in the present—blurring the line between justice and vengeance.

If there’s a defining strength, it’s how the novel balances crime investigation with personal drama. It’s not just about catching a killer; it’s about what the pursuit costs—emotionally, morally, and physically.

Overall, Cold Vengeance is a gripping and engaging start to the series. Jonathan Ben-Ron delivers a story that combines classic crime thriller elements with a strong emotional core, making it appealing to readers who enjoy suspense driven by both action and character.

𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒖𝒓𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒏’𝒕 𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒐𝒎—𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒚’𝒓𝒆 𝒂 𝒎𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒂𝒈𝒆 𝒎𝒆𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒉𝒊𝒎

Cold Vengeance by Jonathan Ben-Ron @jonathanbenron follows Jack Karver, a former NYPD detective who left his job behind for a quieter life in Connecticut with his wife and two young sons, only to be pulled back in when a series of murdered teenagers and staged crime scenes begin pointing directly at him. As the bodies keep falling closer and the investigation tightens, Karver realizes the victims are not random and the case is not really about them, but about him and a past he thought he had buried, one that someone is now determined to piece back together and expose, no matter the cost.

Honestly, this is the kind of book that already signals from the start that it’s going to be dark and serious, and it really delivers. I really like the premise, especially the hook of a killer leaving Karver’s own NYPD business card on victims. It’s simple but effective, and it immediately makes everything feel personal. The short chapters also help a lot, making it feel fast paced without forcing unnecessary intensity.

The story builds tension in a steady way as the murders start getting closer to Karver, creating that constant sense of pressure. What I like is that it’s not relying on one big shocking twist, but more on how everything slowly connects. The idea that the victims aren’t random adds another layer to the mystery, making it feel more intentional and unsettling.

Karver himself feels like a grounded protagonist. He’s not overpowered, and his struggle isn’t just about solving the case but also protecting his family and dealing with a past he thought was buried. The strained dynamic with his wife adds emotional weight, making the stakes feel more real. It does feel like some parts are still setting things up since this is a series opener, but that also leaves you with the sense that something bigger is coming.

I settled into reading this thriller during a thunderstorm. It was the absolute PERFECT backdrop to such an intense, strong book! This was a new-to-me author, but now, I'm ready to indulge in the rest of the series.

Former NYPD detective's desire for a quiet life with his family is brutally ripped out of his grasp when his business card shows up on a dead body. The way his past comes barreling back at him nearly knocked the breath out of me. It is so much more than a nod to a simple case -- it's an entire cover up. And someone wants him to pay attention or pay the price.

The stakes that this placed on his relationship with his family, especially his wife, add to the strain you experience with Jack. He's far from a perfect man, often dropping jokes that are ill-timed and fall flat. It adds to tension building that make completely blow everything to pieces.

Speaking of falling flat, I've found that thrillers often do that every so often, but this one? HOLY MOLY! I felt like I was on the tilt-a-whirl, being tossed hard and fast from one side to another, never stopping from start to finish. Just as the hair on the back of my neck would settle, the hairs on my arms would start to stand from the next dark twist.

The final chapters are absolutely a masterpiece! It dug its heels in and gripped even tighter. Psychologically, the author put Jack through the ringer and I absorbed every ounce of guilt and strain that he went through on the search for answers. This needs a live-action series!

Cold Vengeance follows former NYPD detective Jack Karver, whose quiet family life is shattered when two murdered teenagers are linked to him. As more bodies appear, he is forced to confront a buried case from his past while the danger moves ever closer to his home.

Dark, twisty, and emotionally gripping, this thriller pulled me in from the very first page and never let go. I was completely locked in from the start. One of the strongest hooks is the killer leaving Jack Karver's NYPD business card at the crime scenes, such a clever and chilling detail that instantly pulls you in.

The atmosphere is unsettling, the pacing is sharp, and the tension keeps building until your heart is racing. Every time I thought I had it figured out, the story shifted and made me question everything. The writing felt almost poetic at times, full of melancholy, sharp detail, and emotion. Honestly, it felt like the author was caressing the keyboard into submission.

I also loved seeing Jack in his personal life, especially the moments with his dog and his wife. Their dynamic added so much depth, and I loved how she knew when to ground him and when to lift him up.

The last few chapters were absolutely insane, spine chilling and impossible to put down. I was fully engaged the entire time and now I cannot wait to read the next one.

"The killer vanished into the night, leaving behind a scene of panic and a trail of carefully placed breadcrumbs. The game escalated."

Book 1 in the Jack Karver series. Jack Karver is a former NYPD detective. Still troubled by his past which includes a gunshot wound and a lawsuit against his own department, Jack hides his insecurities behind jokes and quips. But when two teenagers are found dead with one of Jack's old business cards displayed on the bodies, it is clear that Jack has landed himself in a mess no amount of jokes will clear up.

A tense, suspenseful thriller filled with fast-paced action and snappy quips and banter. The story was far more complex than I expected, and the personal development of the main character was very satisfying.

Jack starts out as a loudmouth with a shaky marriage and a closet jam-packed with the skeletons of trauma, denial and regret. But as the story progresses and more details of Jack's past are revealed, his facade of carefree joker is peeled away, revealing a character who is devoted, caring and principled even when the world around him is burning and ripe with conspiracies, cover-ups and betrayal.

Recommended for readers who enjoy fast-paced, political thrillers with emotional depth and flawed main characters who battle the world around them and their own inner demons at the same time.

This book really said: “your past is back, and it’s not here to talk.” 💀

Murdered teens + a calling card pointing to YOU? Yeah, Jack Karver’s life goes from peaceful dad mode to full chaos real quick, and I was hooked from page one.

Karver is not your perfect detective. He’s tired, messy, and clearly hiding something big. He left the NYPD for a quiet life, but the way this case drags him back?? Personal. Targeted. Slightly unhinged. Watching him spiral while trying to stay in control? Elite tension.

The pacing?? INSANE. No breaks, just constant twists and “wait, WHAT?” moments. And when it clicks that the victims aren’t even the main point, yeah, that’s when the story hits different. This isn’t about the murders. It’s about him. And someone is playing a very dangerous game.

Also his personal life?? Hanging by a thread. Marriage struggling, pressure building, everything closing in at once. It’s giving thriller + emotional damage + secrets that should’ve stayed buried, but didn’t.

Fast, dark, and addictive. You start for the mystery, you stay because you NEED to know what Karver did and who’s coming for him next. And trust me, it gets messy.

The story begins with two teenagers being killed. The killer leaves a calling card on their bodies that points directly to Jack Karver.

Jack Karver, left the NYPD and is living a quiet life in Connecticut with his wife and sons.

A new investigation draws him back as a killer starts to stage crime scenes that refer directly back to Jack. He starts to relialize that the killings are far from random - the subjects all lead him back to a case he thought he could leave behind. Is the killer taunting him?

Jack's marriage is already hanging by a thread - how can his relationship survive when he is tormented by things he thought were in the past?

The killings ramp up, and the killer is getting closer. The situations Jack is put in are thrilling and full of tension.

I was invested in this story from beginning to end. Great storytelling, perfect pacing, and a character that I really was rooting for.

There is a perfect mix of the investigations and Jack's personal story - perfectly meshed in the story.

I am ready to dig into the rest of the Jack Karver series!

Cold Vengeance was quite the ride! This action-packed crime thriller kept me hooked from start to finish with its fast pace, tense atmosphere, and plenty of twists along the way.

I loved how the story constantly had me questioning everything. One minute I trusted a character, and the next I was second-guessing their motives. The mystery unfolded at just the right pace, keeping me eager to find out what was really going on.

The action scenes were gripping, and the backstories of the main characters added depth and emotion to the plot, making them feel more than just faces in the investigation. The combination of suspense, intrigue, and character development made for a thoroughly enjoyable read.

If you enjoy crime thrillers filled with action, tension, and unexpected turns, this one is well worth picking up. I’m definitely looking forward to reading more from Jonathan Ben-Ron in the future!

Who loves a thriller with short chapters?! 🙋‍♀️

I love short chapters. It allows me to read a few minutes during the constant chaos. 😂

This one sucked me right in. Jack, the retired detective is witty and intelligent. Throw in Hudson, a loveable dog sidekick, and it's a win.

It can be a bit heavy, as it has to do with the aftermath of a school shooting. There is corruption, greed, gun violence, and revenge. I love a good revenge story and this one truly questioning who the real villain was in the story.

I loved that one of the side characters was from M15. The best part being the character was a woman. I love a tough woman who can kick butt. 💪

Thank you Jonathan Ben-Ron for sending me a copy of your book! 😍 I really appreciate it.

It's the first book in the Jack Karver series. I am definitely interested to see what happens next in book 2.

This was easily a 5 star read for me and honestly the epitome of what a police procedural thriller should be. The pacing was spot on from beginning to end, and the short chapters kept me flying through the story without ever feeling bogged down. Jack was such a strong main character too! I loved his tendency to crack jokes at the absolute worst possible moments, which added some much-needed humor and made him feel very human. The school shooting storyline was heartbreaking and added an emotional weight that really stuck with me. On top of that, the writing itself was incredibly smooth and polished, making the whole book feel effortless to read. Overall, this was extremely well written, intensely engaging, and I’m so glad it’s the start of a series because I’ll definitely be picking up the next installment.

Cold Vengeance is the story of Jack Karver, a former NYPD detective who has retired with his family to Connecticut. When a gruesome murder disrupts his sleepy little town things get personal. The killer has left one of Jack's old business cards at the scene. When other murders happen with the killer pointing the evidence towards him, Jack knows that a former case that left him emotionally scared, has come back to haunt him. Knowing that he must clear his name, he uses his former skills as a detective, along with the help of former colleagues and friends, to find the answers. This is a very well written book with short chapters that make the reader want to keep reading. This is a story of revenge, buried lies, truth vindicated, and wrongs being righted. This is the first book in the Jack Karver series and I will be reading them. Highly recommended police procedural thriller.

Cold Vengeance by Jonathan Ben-Ross was a great crime thriller read! It was suspenseful and fast paced and it had me at the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next.

Jack Carver is an ex NYPD cop, now living in Connecticut when two bodies are discovered with his old business card lying on one of the bodies. Who killed them and why are they trying to set him up?

What follows is a tense, nail biting story as more murders are committed and Carver is the main suspect and he begins his own investigation to find the murderer.

I love thrillers that are fast and easy to read and keep your eyes glued to the pages, and this is just that! Plus he has a dog sidekick and how can you not love that?

I don’t typically read crime dramas like this, so I honestly went into this one not knowing what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised.

This book hooked me from the start and there were definitely moments where I couldn’t put it down. The tension was done really well and I was on the edge of my seat a lot throughout the story. I also thought the characters were well developed, even though I did occasionally mix up some of the secondary characters.

That being said there were a few slower moments where my interest drifted a little, especially toward the end. Overall though, this was such an engaging read and definitely kept me invested.

This felt like the kind of thriller you’d see as a Netflix series. Fast, easy to read, and hard to put down once it got going. Jack Karver is a solid main character - smart but not superhuman, which made the danger feel real.

There were a couple of spots I thought might go one way and the book went somewhere better. I also liked the family side of the story, not just the crime plot. Definitely worth the read if you enjoy police/psychological thrillers.
Looking forward to Blossoms of Betrayal.

First book in a series and it was such a good one!
I love a book that has that grips the reader straight off and this book definitely did that, an horrific crime occurs in the prologue and I just knew this was going to be a good read.
The writing is full of suspense and tension and kept me guessing, a crime thriller that’s gritty and dark in places but it’s also fast paced as a real page turner.
A new author to me but I’m definitely looking forward to reading book 2 and then book 3 is out next month, all on Kindle Unlimited too 😀

Cold Vengeance is a fast, tense thriller and a solid start to the Jack Karver series.

The hook got me straight away — a killer leaving Karver’s NYPD business card on victims 😳 instantly personal, instantly high stakes.

Karver’s not just chasing a case… he is the case. Trying to protect his family while being dragged back into a past he thought he’d buried — that tension really drives it.

Super fast-paced — short chapters, constant twists, and it doesn’t let up 🔥
Quick, gripping, and keeps tightening the pressure the whole way through.

Cold Vengeance was an extremely well written and suspenseful novel. The main character was likable and very realistic making it easy to get into the book. The plot was well written, creating an emotional connection to the past and characters. From the very beginning, everything about it captivated me. My only wish was for the action to have been slightly extended towards the end. Nevertheless, with the plot, tension and build up, this is the perfect crime thriller!

Wow!!! Just wow!
It's been a hot minute since I dived into a thriller and Jonathan Ben-Ron is a new to me author. Well can I just say this book did not disappoint.
The characters are amazing, the storyline is like a freaking roller-coaster and well there may be a dog that I'm a tiny bit in love with.
Seriously this book has reignited my love of thrillers and I'm happy to add a new author to my roster of favorites.

Jack Karver gets caught in the crossfire in more ways than one. His K9 sidekick quietly keeps him steady as the turmoil of the story keeps the reader on edge. Carver is intent on justice often at great risk, but he has allies. Some unexpected. Family matters to him, and through it all, he realizes their value, especially his wife Claire, who steers his compass North. Well worth the read. Glad there are more books in the series.

This is a really great police / Thriller with a great story line and characters. It's quite a slow burn I'd say but it does build up really well to the ending.

I really liked Jack as a character as he negotiates his alway around the case and there's a great level of tension throughout helped by the short chapters.

Overall I'd definitely recommend

Wow, talk about an intense and amazing espionage thriller. We need to start talking about this book more, I am definitely will be picking up more of the books in the series.

After the unfortunate murders of two teenagers, a calling card is left by them and it points at Jack Karver. He left the NYPD, after a very difficult case and now resides with his wife Claire and two young boys in Connecticut. Unfortunately this new case has his name all over it, and he is tossed into this world of crime again. Karver is a smart man and clearly something is not adding up with these killings, but he’ll have to act fast to protect the ones he loves. I was absolutely hooked and can’t stop thinking about the next book, it’s the perfect thriller for this summer.
