If you aren't reading flash fiction, you are missing out! Shapard edited a few books of flash fiction a few decades ago, which are credited with canonizing/establishing the form and seeing him contribute here is a cool full-circle moment.
Flash has changed a lot. These stories show the tension with form and function. Is flash about telling a story? Capturinc a feeling? An image? Capturing reality? Twisting reality?
The pieces here largely show how form can be used so many different ways; not everything here is a proper story (some lean into poetry territory) but every piece is doing something and it's fun to be dropped into 100+ different stories and crawling our way through them.
Excellent collection of short fiction and yes I have a story in this but it’s not cheating because all the other stories really are extremely good. Check it out :)
