I received this as an ARC, and this revenge story is bitter sweet. Bitter because she should have NEVER gone through what she went through in the first place, but sweet, because she is a powerful black woman who came out stronger and more powerful! A story that needs to be told, and is told well, and I’m honored that I was chosen to be an early reader for it! Read it!

I commend London Valen as a writer, because it’s a genuinely brave piece of work.
This book is a little long, but it never once feels like it. There is no fluff here. Every single scene is moving Rose’s story forward, every chapter earns its place, and the pacing stays quick from start to finish. If it wasn’t important, it wasn’t included.
What really sets this book apart is how she weaves real history into fiction. This isn’t a book that name drops real events for shock value. It’s a book where the fiction hits like reality because…it is. So much of it is rooted in things that actually happened, or are actually happening right now. Honestly, if this had been a purely made up story with this many heavy topics packed in, it would have felt like too much. But because it’s grounded in truth, it works and it hits different.

The Price of a Rose by London Valen took me on a journey that began with Black oppression and ultimately led to Black liberty, resilience, and female empowerment.
Watching everything the FMC endured throughout her journey was heartbreaking, difficult, and at times deeply disturbing. Please, please check your trigger warnings before reading, because there are some heavy themes and experiences that she is forced to endure.
But what made this story so powerful for me was seeing where she ultimately ended up. Her journey reminded me that sometimes the darkest chapters can lead to the most powerful transformations.
I’ve been on my reading journey for about 3 years now, and I can honestly say this is one of the most inspirational and Black-empowering books I’ve read so far. It left me thinking long after I turned the final page.
Knowledge is power—and after reading this, I believe that statement is an understatement.

I received an ARC of The Price of a Rose by London Valen in exchange for my honest review.
WOW. This book hooked me from the very first page and never let go. It took me through every emotion imaginable, devastation, anger, sadness, frustration, hope, and ultimately satisfaction. Rose is the definition of strength, resilience, and survival. She endures more than anyone ever should, yet she refuses to let it define her.
Watching Rose outsmart everyone standing in her way was incredibly satisfying. This is how you write a literary revenge thriller!
What I appreciated most was that, despite the heavy subject matter, the book doesn’t dwell on graphic details. Instead, it focuses on Rose’s strength, determination, and perseverance. Had it lingered on the brutality, it would have been much harder to get through. Knowing this story is inspired by the real experiences of victims made it even more heartbreaking.
Reading this while so many conversations are happening about abuse, trafficking, and powerful people protecting one another made it feel especially relevant. It was difficult at times because it reflects injustices that still exist, but that’s also what makes it such a powerful read.

I was lucky enough to be gifted a copy of this by the author and finished the book in the early hours of this morning. All I can say is WOW.
An impeccably researched literary revenge thriller filled with female rage, based on historical precedent and set within the systems and institutions that see people like Rose as disposable, until she proves she absolutely is not. This book was amazing. The story was gripping and I couldn’t put it down. Rose is one of the strongest characters I have ever read and seeing how she powers through so much inspires me. From the start of this book I knew I was in for a whirlwind and I have no complaints. This book was written in the most beautiful way. So many twists and turns.

This is an amazing book! Seriously I am so honored to have been given the opportunity to get an advance copy! Rose is one of the STRONGEST main characters I have ever read! The highlights on the flaws and corruption in the prison system, the foster care system, the vulnerability of girls who grow up in those systems then fall prey to traffickers the HORRIBLE atrocities committed against children by the rich and powerful, in injustices black women face as in the military and life, the struggle to find your identity, what it feels like to be white passing. I could go on for DAYS about what this book covers but I won’t definitely go and pick up this book when it releases!!

.75 rounded up. Received an advanced readers copy by the author. While the premise of the book and the research was thought out, the plot was jumbled and rushed through. Rose’s revenge plot, in my opinion, became very unrealistic. She lived many lives (total of 3) over 30 years and was in prison, escaped, became a trafficked escort, served in Afghanistan (becoming a secret undercover agent), helped take down the Taliban, became a talk show host, and then finally president. I felt like I was getting whiplash. I would’ve liked to see one or two of these storylines thought out more and be the center of the book while still touching on the injustices. Even her love interest was rushed. It was maybe suspected that they would end up together, but there wasn’t much of a storyline to show their feelings for one another. However, I did like the twist of how some of the “bad guys” and those who “turned on her” were on her side all along.
The ARC had many typos and grammatical errors. It did go through final edits the week I received it. I am hoping that all are found by the Aug 5th release. Personal opinion, there were way too many exclamation points throughout the dialogue. I would say about 75% of dialogue ended with an exclamation. It made the already stilted dialogue even more awkward.
Overall, the book was a tough read based on grammar and rushed plot. I felt disappointed as this book had the foundation to address many injustices, but it crumbled under poor execution.

This is what you call a POWERFUL ON TIME book! I have to respect the thought and research that went into this book!l from London! This book had me hooked from page 1 all the way to the end while my mouth was wide open lol. I did not want to put the book down AT ALL!! I am so glad London Valen wrote this book as a challenge to all of us and to shed light on what happens within The American Systems in place. Rose is a straight SOLDIER and there are so many women just like her. Rose is the epitome of a BLACK woman in America! Obstacles, haters, naysayers all of it we experience daily while maintaining poised, intelligent, having grit, perseverance and always one step ahead. Exemplifying how hard we have to work to achieve and we do it everytime! I felt so good reading this book and found myself cheering for Rose while also seeing myself in Rose in many aspects of this book. I went through all emotions in this book. A true journey watching this story unfold! I ended this book feeling empowered and ready to tackle whatever is next! This is a MUST READ for 2026! We can all find ourselves in Rose! I can go on and on, but you gotta read it! If you read it comment so we can discuss cause I’m ready. I don’t want to spoil it for you! God Bless London Valen for this masterpiece!

What a timely and powerful read. This book hit me in so many ways. It was raw, emotional, and shed light on so many of the stories and experiences we need to pay more attention to.
What I appreciated most was that this wasn’t simply a book about politics. Although it was fictionalized, It was about the people, the lived experiences, and the stories that have shaped history—many of which are too often overlooked. Those personal narratives made the history feel immediate and deeply impactful.
If you enjoy historical fiction that makes you reflect long after you’ve finished the last page, this is definitely one to add to your reading list.
What I appreciated most was that this wasn’t simply a book about politics. Now into the review, this book had me in a chokehold from the beginning of the first chapter, and that events and topics spoken upon were not light, but it definitely shows us a world of injustices and what the FMC went through. This is a 35 yr revenge condensed in 373 pages. The amount of betrayal she endured and the patience this women went through to get her clap back on ppl was crazy! Even her “close” ppl she worked with she worked for 15 yrs to get her revenge on him too! It’s a wild ride!
The plot twists with her ppl or thought to be her ppl just holy shit did not see it coming!!! And I didn’t know what to expect with this but loved every second of it!

I appreciate the story addressing real world injustices, themes around race, class, privilege, violence against black and brown bodies are all important. But the dialogue took me out of the story. It felt stilted in some parts, lacking the cadence of natural speech, and the "bad guys" too often boarded on mustache-twirly characterization through their dialogue. After awhile, it felt like a device used for shock factor.
I wanted to like this story more, and I wish I could have given it a higher rating. As it stands, the message is important, but the execution wasn't for me. Again, this is completely a personal taste thing.

The concept of this book was great, the execution however, was lacking. I really was rooting for the FMC, I loved her strength and resilience. My main issues was the storyline. It seemed almost like a fantasy book with the shear number of hurdles in her way, and the way she was able to maneuver through them. I assume this book was meant to shed light on the many obstacles and inequities faced by marginalized groups in America, but the shear overkill made it almost comical and took away from the main plot.

It’s uncomfortable because it’s meant to be!
The trigger warnings are absolutely warranted, but London Valen handles these themes with care and intention. The story never feels exploitative. Instead, it forces us to bear witness while reminding us why these conversations matter.

From the very first chapters, this story had me angry. Watching Rose endure injustice after injustice was heartbreaking, and there were moments when I had to stop reading simply to process what was happening.
But what kept me turning the pages wasn’t just the injustice—it was Rose herself.
What I expected to be a story about survival evolved into something much larger. This is a political revenge thriller that explores power, corruption, resilience, loyalty, betrayal, and the extraordinary strength it takes to refuse to let other people define your future.
Every time I thought Rose had reached her breaking point, she found another way to rise. Every obstacle placed in her path became another opportunity to prove that the people who underestimated her had made a terrible mistake.

One of my favorite things about this book was that I never felt like I was simply watching Rose’s story from the outside. Somehow the author made me feel like I got to BE every character for a moment. ABSOLUTELY CRAZY.
But what made this book hit even harder for me was learning how much of the story connects back to real injustices and African-American history.
As a Black woman, there were pieces of our history reflected in this story that I genuinely didn’t know. Being able to read the book and then look through the accompanying research guide to understand the real history and systems that inspired parts of it made the story feel even heavier—and honestly, even more important.
It gave me those moments of:
“Wait… THAT was based on something real?”
And suddenly the fiction didn’t feel quite so fictional anymore.
This book gave me history, corruption, survival, identity, revenge, systemic injustice, characters I could actually FEEL, and an ending that brought the entire journey home.
This wasn’t just a thriller for me.
It made me want to KNOW MORE.
And any fictional book that can entertain me while also sending me down a rabbit hole learning pieces of my own history?

One of my favorite things about this book was that I never felt like I was simply watching Rose’s story from the outside. Somehow the author made me feel like I got to BE every character for a moment. This book had me hooked from the very first page. It follows Rose, an 18-year-old Black woman, from the 1990s through 2028 as she endures unimaginable hardships while refusing to let them define her.
Raised in foster care, Rose was forced to sleep in a cage and panhandle alongside her younger siblings to support her foster parents’ addictions. She endured horrific abuse, including sexual assault, while doing everything she could to protect the siblings she loved.
One of the most chilling moments came when Rose was mistaken for a Black man while hitchhiking, prompting someone to call the police. When officers arrived, they initially assumed she was a white woman because of her complexion and treated her with kindness and respect. The moment they discovered she was actually Black, everything changed. That single scene perfectly captures one of the many uncomfortable truths this novel isn’t afraid to confront.

I’m going to be 100% honest and say I did NOT start this book the same way I finished it!
The first half had me irritated and questioning everything. I kept wondering what was going on and, honestly, I wasn’t sure where the author was going with all of this.
This was a powerful read, and at first, it felt like there was just too much going on. Because the book deals with such heavy topics, racism, human trafficking, corruption, abuse, and so much more, it was a lot to process. And knowing that so much of this is based on real life events, made it even harder for me to believe, because I kept thinking, “There’s NO way, all of this could happen to just one person.”
We follow Rose Washington, who is falsely imprisoned and goes through so much. She sees a lot, learns a lot, and somehow manages to escape prison. From there, we watch her fight to survive while also seeking revenge against the people and powerful forces that put her in this situation.
And the revenge journey is LONG.

What an interesting, thought-provoking read. I’ve been sitting with my thoughts for two days after finishing this one.
In this literary revenge thriller, we follow Rose, a teenage foster child searching for her two adopted sisters. After being falsely imprisoned because of her race, Rose experiences the unimaginable. For more than three decades, we follow her journey as she seeks revenge and justice for herself and for so many others.
This is an extremely heavy read. There are so many terrible things that happen to Rose during the first half of the book that, at times, I struggled to believe that all of this could happen to one person. But then it clicked for me what the author was doing. He was bringing awareness to these issues by allowing them to speak through Rose. Brilliant.
The second half of this book was chef’s kiss and I enjoyed every minute of it. I’ve never read anything quite like this. It felt like getting slapped in the face with a brutal reminder of the horrific things this country has done to both women and Black Americans throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.
Rose is one of the strongest characters I’ve ever encountered in a book, and I have a feeling she’ll stay with me for a long time.

Wow is an understatement! The Price of a Rose is a gut wrenching, epic and emotional experience to read! The suspense and emotional turmoil you’ll experience with this book makes this so moving and so powerful that words truly can’t describe it. This follows Rose Washington from teen to adulthood, she’s set out on a mission to find her sisters but never would I have ever imagined what Rose would have to endure in her quest for truth. London Valen brought to life Rose in a way that creates a vulnerable yet strong individual. This book covers so many genres. It’s a suspense, thriller, espionage, horror and a story of rage and revenge. This is such an epic read that is well written, well researched and well thought out.
There are a few trigger warnings: sexual assault, sexual exploitation, sexual explicit material, racism, death/murder and grief just to name a few.
I give this 4.75 stars.

The Price Of A Rose is an emotionally compelling, angsty and intriguing ride! This is easily one of the best ARCs that I've read for the year. Shout-out to the author for the research alone. The nerdy girl in me loves that she sent us a whole kit with references and evidence citing context to the storyline. The story itself was very well written and takes you through a true rollercoaster. I couldn't put this one down and this is one of the best thrillers that I've read so far this year in my opinion. I love thrillers that have a psychological and political component to them. Add in a great revenge plot and I was easily sold. If you are a thriller lover who enjoys a well developed and immersive plot, this is a TBR MUST!

I recently read, “The Price of a Rose”,and it is a gripping story about racial bias in the South. The plot follows a young, light-skinned black woman who is wrongfully incarcerated after her racial identity is discovered. Sent to an Alabama prison run by corrupt officials and sexual predators, the story highlights her resilience as someone that has spent her life fighting to survive.
This book powerfully demonstrates the detrimental effects of a government (much like the one we have.) that uses corruption, cruelty and chaos as tools of control-until they meet Rose Washington! There is so much more I want to tell you, but it would ruin how all of this would end. It is a definite page-turner that I highly recommend!

The Price of a Rose by London Vallin is, without question, one of the best books I’ve read this year.
From the very first page, I was completely invested in the story. The characters felt authentic, the emotions hit hard, and the writing pulled me in so completely that I never wanted to put it down. Every chapter left me eager to see what would happen next, and the emotional depth made this book unforgettable.
This was one of those rare reads that stayed with me long after I turned the final page. If you’re looking for a story that is gripping, emotional, and beautifully written, I can’t recommend this one enough.

This definitely is a must read! Make sure you check your trigger warnings then buckle up and lock in. This book is heavy but necessary. Based off of real places and real experiences it follows Rose as she is on a quest to find her sisters. Rose is white passing and people who took an oath to serve and protect revealed their true nature oblivious to her ethnicity. This puts Rose in a predicament where she’s unprotected and exploited by the justice system at every level. However, her will and resilience to get back to her sisters and fight for not only herself but for people who are also exploited and displaced sends her on a life mission to take down all whom had a hand in the wicked and disgusting actions.

The story follows three different women Rose, Natasha and Jaqueline over the period of 30 years as they work to take down the countries largest sex trafficking ring. I absolutely love a psychological thriller and this did not disappoint. I was hooked from the first five pages and dreading the last five because I didn’t want it to end. The feminine and justifiable rage I felt while reading this was indescribable. I enjoyed every second of this book and I am having a hard time finding another book that peaks my interest as much as this book. 5/5 10/10. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone!

Well this book was a wild ride. I loved Rose and her journey despite all of the obstacles. It was extremely upsetting to read with all of the parallels to the real life justice system, power structure and Black experience in America. I did have to suspend disbelief many times because the way everything worked out for Rose at every possible turn was a bit much. She also would have been unalived 1074039 times prior to the end of this book! Lost me a little in the middle with the Taliban/Afghanistan military plotline but it all tied together well. Overall, a really interesting and compelling read.

This was my first read from London Valen, and I was beyond impressed by how powerful and well-written this story was. It's deep, heartbreaking, and filled with tension while shining a light on real-life issues. This emotional journey follows Rose (Jacqueline Rose), a Black woman who grew up in foster care and endured unimaginable hardships that fueled her fight against racism, injustice, and the wrongdoings toward children. Rose is resilient, powerful, and determined to seek revenge against those who caused harm while refusing to let her past break her. This is a powerful story that should not be overlooked.

I received an eARC of this book from the author. As a Gen Xer I was reminded of the fictional media focused on the Cold War in books and movies that dominated my youth and early adulthood. The Price of the Rose is reminiscent of that, but so relevant to today’s world. A world in which the Trump administration has made stranger than fiction an everyday experience. This read like an epic movie of injustice, espionage, and political leadership.
It was easy to imagine an actress like Halle Berry playing the main character. A character who comes out of foster care, becomes a prison boss, a highly decorated military officer, and ultimately the president. Someone who outsmarts all the bad guys, plays the long game, and excels at just about everything she puts her mind to.

I got an advanced reader copy of this book and I thoroughly enjoyed my time reading it. It definitely was a heavy read at times because of some of the themes within the book. It is a necessary read for the times that were in because of the allegories to the current political climate. I appreciate how the book gives a vision of how we could move forward politically within the last Act of the book!
