Curse Me Maybe: A Cozy Fantasy Romance

Rate this book
Second chance romance meets cozy witchcraft in a town where magic won’t save you, but love just might.

I’ve always known what’s coming — and that’s always been my curse.
I run a candy shop in a picturesque coastal town and live in my family’s big magical Victorian house with my three sisters. It sounds idyllic, and sometimes it almost is. My magic brings comfort through sweet things, small joys, and moments that make people smile.

But there’s an edge to it.

I have visions, and they never bring anything but trouble. The harder I try to block them out, the worse they get, until every glimpse of the future feels like my responsibility to fix. Now the house is acting up too, the magic it’s held for years straining and slipping, while the future I’m desperate to ignore refuses to stay out of my dreams.

Those visions are why I let Caleb Mercer go. He was my first love, and the one person I didn’t trust myself not to hurt. Now he’s back, living in the lighthouse that shaped him while grieving the uncle he lost. He’s steady, quiet, and infuriatingly good at standing exactly where he’s needed. Being near him again makes it impossible to pretend I have everything under control.
Loving Caleb again might mean choosing without knowing what comes next.

Curse Me Maybe is a standalone, witchy and cozy small town romance in a new series — with spice, nosy neighbors, and about finding yourself and the people you love.

It's been a while since I've read a cozy fantasy novel, and unfortunately, I was let down. I felt like my expectations were kind of along the vibes of Gilmore Girls and those cozy, fall small-town vibes, and while that was there, the romance aspect of the story was lacking.

Ivy Romantic lives in the town of Silverlight Shores with her two sisters and her pet dog, Gunner. She owns a small candy shop and lives a good life, except for one secret: her and her sisters are all witches, and her pet is actually a talking familiar. When strange things start happening around town, Ivy somehow knows this has something to do with her family. Add in the return of Caleb Mercer, who's returned to town after leaving for years and her former flame she never got over, and her simple life suddenly turns complicated overnight.

As mentioned earlier, I loved the small town vibes from the story. There's something comforting about reading a small-town romance or just any story that takes place in a small town that just makes me want to curl up with a blanket and a candle lit in the background and a warm mug of tea. I personally think this would make for a great read in the late summer going into the fall only because that's when the story takes place if you want a true immersive reading experience.

I also loved the dynamic among Ivy and her sisters. I loved reading about them and the banter and their interactions really jumped off the page and I truly felt how close they were, despite their family's backstory. To be completely honest, I think Gunner stole the show. I know he's a dog, but he's definitely giving me the same vibes as the gargoyle from The Knight and the Moth (if you know you know) and I LOVED that.

(Also, bonus points because the cover is absolutely adorable and super cute!)

The bulk of this review will be going into two things specifically: the pacing and the romance. For starters, the book is barely 260 pages long, which yes, makes for a fast read, but also does the romance and the plot a disservice when it comes to the development of Ivy and Caleb's relationship.

With the book being on the shorter side, assuming an average length of a book is about 350 pages, there's a lot of things that were glossed over when it comes to character backstories and plot points that were briefly touched upon but never fully elaborated on. With Ivy and Caleb's story being a second-chance romance, which as some people know already, is one of my favorite romance tropes but it has to be done right. I feel like a lot of Ivy and Caleb's backstory was glossed over and there were only brief mentions here and there about their past. For me, I really have to know about the backstory of a couple and how close they were in order to feel the angst, tension, and the "will they or won't they" dynamic of the couple in the present as they try to find their way back to each other, since that's...well, that's the whole point of a second-chance romance.

Because I wasn't able to feel that tension, I felt like I was never fully invested in Ivy and Caleb's story, especially since things between them went from 0 to 1,000 extremely quickly in the story because the book was so short. Yes, this is a cozy fantasy and yes, the story is overall low angst, but the speed at which their relationship progressed after neither of them seeing each other for at least a decade, it didn't feel believable to me. It was almost as if the author wanted to cram in a bunch of different plot lines into the story but didn't want to make the book super long, so a lot of things got pushed to the side or briefly touched upon and then was never elaborated on. Granted, I'll give the benefit of the doubt for now considering this is only the first book in the series and I'm sure there'll be some more worldbuilding to come later on. Additionally, I didn't feel fully invested in the story until over the halfway mark, and that's when things started getting interesting. If you're willing to push through the book, I think the payoff is worth it, although I did think the ending was a little....out of character, for lack of better wording, in context with the rest of the vibes of the story.

Overall, this was a decent start to a new series, although I wish the book was longer so we could see Ivy and Caleb's relationship realistically develop and the worldbuilding felt more concrete. I am interested in reading the books for Ivy's other sisters (specifically Hazel!) and despite the low rating on this story, I'm still excited for what's to come later on.

DNF at around 41%.

The main reason I decided to stop reading is that it didn’t give me anything that pushed me to keep going: no strong emotional pull, no curiosity that made me want to turn the page.

From the very first pages, you can really feel the small-town atmosphere, and I did enjoy the coastal setting and its community (at least from what I read). However, the magical aspect left me a bit disappointed. I would have liked to see Ivy and her sisters develop more of a rhythm or connection with their magic, especially in moments of tension or danger.

What didn’t fully work for me is how Ivy seems so immersed in her “mundane” life that, when it comes to actually taking action with magic, she almost feels caught off guard. I understand that being a witch doesn’t necessarily define your entire mindset, but I still would have liked to see some traditions, habits, or distinctive elements that really set them apart.

As for the characters, Ivy feels more mundane than magical, while Caleb comes across as the lost love trying to put down roots again in the place he once called home, and to finally close the chapter that kept him away from his first love for so long. I don’t have much to say about the sisters since we don’t really get to see them in action, although their different personalities do come through. Their familiars, however, were definitely a highlight, Gunner (Ivy’s familiar) was my favorite.

In some parts, the story felt quite rushed, especially in moments that should have carried more emotional weight, like the second chance trope. Maybe it’s because I didn’t finish it, but it felt like that aspect wasn’t given enough time to fully develop—especially since it had been so long since they last saw each other. Their relationship felt more told than felt, and it developed too quickly for me to truly believe in it.

I also think the length didn’t help. Because it’s quite short, everything moves very fast, and there isn’t enough time to properly build emotional depth or connection.

That said, it wasn’t a bad story—it just didn’t leave me with anything. The idea behind the story had a lot of potential, and while the second chance romance is cute in theory, it ultimately felt quite surface-level in its execution.

Overall, I really appreciate the ARC opportunity, this just wasn’t the right fit for me.

I love a good fast paced fantasy rom com and this one was sooo cute! It has me craving sweets the whole time SO BAD! Literally, I think I dreamed of my fav hard sweets, sherbet lemons and pear drops that night! 🤣

This book hints at being part of a ‘new couple every book’ kind of vibe and I am so excited at that as I really enjoy that kind of style.

Caleb is a full on golden retriever, sweetheart man! 🥹😍 I loved him straight away! Him and Ivy together are so cute, they was apart for 10 years and you can see that love never left! When he finds out her truth he is does everything to show her she is his endgame 🥰

Ivy is a secret Witch alongside her sisters. They have great banter together and I ADORES the familiars!!! I mean talking pets are everything 🥹

I enjoyed the low stakes conflict happening in the town, it was a good plot and I’m looking forward to reading the other books!

DNF at 40% (Chapter 14).

As much as I like how cozy it is, I keep wondering: what’s the point of the plot? So much is happening so quickly, yet it feels like nothing is really progressing. There’s a kraken in the water… that needs to eat bread? I do love Gunner, though. But overall, I just couldn’t make sense of everything or connect with the characters. Sorry, I really tried.

Still, thank you for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Curse Me Maybe is a cute and cozy witchy romance. Ivy and her sisters are witches. The book sets up a future book for each sister.

Ivy’s ex boyfriend comes back to fix the town lighthouse. Their chemistry and connection picks right back up so while it may feel a little insta-love it’s because they have a lot of history.

Ivy discovers there is a ward down and her and her sisters have to figure out how to use their magic to fix it.

There are familiars, spells, a small town, and overall just a cozy, low stakes magical vibe.

Thanks to Literary Love on the Line and the author for the e-arc. All opinions are my own.

How gorgeous is this cover?!😍 This was such a fun cozy romantasy that I read in just a few hours.

I’m absolutely obsessed with Caleb, he is the ultimate sweetheart with a golden retriever energy. I loved all 4 sisters and their banter. The talking familiars had me laughing out loud because they were just full of sass.

This was the perfect cozy second chance romance that left me swooning.

If you love: witches, magic, small town romantasy, second chance romance - definitely pick this one up!

*ARC REVIEW*

Very cozy, mild stakes fantasy romance! Not my typical speed but the cover is gorgeous and I couldn’t pass it up!

There is a bit of spice but it’s mostly fade to black (little (if any) explicit language). The setting, story, and town are cute. I hope Caleb and Ivy are significantly shown throughout the rest of the series. I’d like to see how their relationship progresses.

(Rating is rounded up)

Thank you Brittany for this ARC 🫶🏻

Ivy’s small town has a dark magic looming. Ivy and her sisters are witches, but no one knows. When Ivy’s ex, Caleb, moves back to town she knows her feelings for him are endless. He never knew her family’s secret and she doesn’t know if she can trust him.

Caleb has never stopped loving Ivy. When he finally learns her secret, he wants to prove he’ll stick around.

This is a cozy magical romance with a cute familiar and low spice

Very VERY low stakes, witchy romance
It was almost was too low stakes. I felt like I didn’t see a point in the story, character or plot driven. The romance is second chance and they resolve what separated them to begin with on the first 30%. The plot points were quickly addressed, almost rushed and over looked. It was too fast pace to the point I had no interest

"You have to listen to your own weather, my Ivy. You are full of storms and sunshine, my girl. Don't pretend otherwise."

As an October baby, I wanted to LOVE this book, and there definitely are things I appreciated about it. The small-town atmosphere and descriptive writing was a highlight, from the opening chapters I felt transported to Silverlight Shore. I could picture the warmth of Ivy’s candy store, Sugar and Sweet— I need to try some of her toffee, and was definitely craving chocolate as I worked my way through this book. However, the writing was not enough to keep me engaged in the story.

From the outset the premise of the book was enticing to me, but it fell flat in its execution.

The Romance: I love a second chance romance, but Ivy and Caleb’s story was such a small part of the plot it felt irrelevant. Introduced in the second chapter, Caleb quickly becomes an important fixture in our protagonist's life throughout the novel, but for lack of a better way to put it: they don’t have a romance.

Their “first-chance” at love is told directly to the audience in bits and pieces which is more frustrating than informative, and didn’t serve in developing their personalities. Their story was ruined as we we're told that two people should be together instead of being shown why they work together. Though Caleb supported her, so did her sisters? Ivy just decided she couldn’t be with him and spent every scene agonizing internally about how much she missed him which got old quick. Then, they fell unsatisfyingly back into love so suddenly that it wasn’t really a second-chance romance, it was just an immediate “lets be boyfriend and girlfriend”.

The Plot: The plot felt confusing and stagnant even though lots of things were happening. There was no emotional pull or curiosity fostered in the plot which urged me to continue reading. The mystery at the heart of the plot instead of being a fun solve left me as the reader so lost that there were no stakes, there was "something bad happening" in the town but we didn't know why or what. Who cares!

Similarly, the magical aspect of the novel felt under-explained, and even boring. Though there were cool magical aspects, such as the sentient house and the animal familiars of the sisters, nothing else about Ivy felt “witch-y”, I wanted to be in on the secret of magical women "hiding" in a small costal town but the execution of it just fell flat for me.

Overall, I really appreciate the opportunity to read and review this ARC, this book just wasn’t the best to me!

Curse Me Maybe is a cozy, witchy love story that feels light and easy, with just enough magic to keep things interesting.

This is the first in a new series, The Small Town Romantics, set in the adorable seaside town of Silverlight Shore, where the Romantic sisters live, work, and practice a little magic. This story follows Ivy, who, while out on a run with her hilarious canine familiar, Gunner (who honestly steals the show), unexpectedly runs into her ex, Caleb.

But Caleb isn’t just any ex. He’s her first and only love, the one she let go because she was afraid. Afraid he would never truly know her, or worse, that he would and her magic would only bring heartbreak.

What follows is a mix of small town mystery and second chance romance, as the Romantic sisters try to figure out what’s going wrong in their town, while Ivy finds herself slipping back into old feelings for Caleb.

Overall, this was a really cute, easy read that I enjoyed. The cozy vibes, the cute familiars and the touches of magic were really fun, and the romance felt like the perfect addition. There’s a little bit of steam, but overall, I consider this pretty much closed door.

I do think I would’ve rated it a bit higher if there had been a little more depth and development in certain areas. Overall, it was still such a charming, feel good read that I genuinely enjoyed spending time with. The world and characters have a lot of potential and I’m definitely curious to see where the rest of the series goes.

If you’re looking for a low angst, quick read with a cozy magical touch and a lot of heart, this is definitely one to pick up 🤍

✨ I received an ARC for this book. Thank you to Brittany and Love on the Line for the opportunity to read and review.

Take a second-chance romance, set it in a small town, and add a little magic and a big problem, and you get Brittany Kelley's Curse Me Maybe. It was a nice read. The romance was pretty good. Ivy is a procrastinator in all things, including romance. Ironic considering her last name is Romantic. Haha. Caleb was a good guy. I like that he refused to let Ivy stagnate and got the ball rolling on moving things forward for them. He got Ivy to open up, think things through, and admit her feelings, even if only to herself. They were playful and having fun together. Something that I don't think either one of them had in years.

The relationship between Ivy and her sisters was something I really enjoyed. Ivy, Rose, Posey, and Hazel are close, and not just because they all live in the same house. They're all each other has. Everybody is in everybody's business, and they tease each other like there's no tomorrow. When it comes down to it, they have each other's back. I would be remiss if I didn't mention Gunner, Ivy's familiar. He was the best part of the story. The golden retriever was incredibly sweet, but he also brought the sass. He was adorable.

I was a little conflicted about what to rate this. It took me way longer than I expected to get into the story. It wasn't until the stuff with their grandmother and their traumatic history got brought up that the story started getting good. Not to mention the ending, wtf was that? It was unexpected but intriguing and a little darker than I was expecting, but in a good way. Curse Me Maybe is a cute and cozy romance. Overall 3.5 stars

This had the makings of a peak cosy, witchy small-town romance, and it had so many elements that could have made this a five-star read for me.

Ivy is a witch, but her magic manifests through her specially made candies. When a chance encounter forces her to work with her ex-boyfriend of ten years, she has no choice but to reveal her secret — and the real reason she pushed him away all those years ago. Alongside her three sisters and their sassy familiars, she’s thrown into a race to uncover the past, stop her visions of the future from coming true, and, quite casually, negotiate with a kraken.

I really enjoyed the premise of this book, and it ticked a lot of my trope boxes. The cosy small-town vibes, witchy sisters, second-chance romance — it should have been a complete win for me. Unfortunately, I wasn’t quite as gripped as I’d hoped to be. I did find that some of the details and descriptions were repeated a bit too often, which disrupted the flow of the plot for me and pulled me out of the story at times.

Overall, I did enjoy it, and it was a fun, cosy read — just not one that completely swept me away the way I wanted it to.

This was a cute, cozy, second chance romance story that was lighthearted and had the perfect amount of witchy and magic to it. I loved Ivy and Caleb's friendship/relationship. Ivy has a big secret she hid from Caleb (and everyone besides her sisters) all these years in fear he would run away and be scared of her. Seeing him accept her even more and Ivy be able to finally breathe and be honest was so sweet to read. The banter was fun to read and I loved all of the cozy vibes this book gave off!!!

Unfortunately after getting farther into the book, it seemed like so many parts (some being what felt like were important parts of the story) were so rushed and also some things were repeated too much which stuck out more to me than the overall story. It just seemed like the plot points were rushed over while the back ground parts were the ones repeatedly talked about. Overall it was a cozy and quick read for anyone looking for a cozy, second chance romance that has magic and witchy vibes to it!

Thank you to Brittany Kelley and Lauren (Literary Love On The Line) for the eARC and opportunity to read this!

Wow I read this fast! I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump, so I decided to read outside my normal genre to switch gears. The gear that I switched was reading a cozy fantasy for once.

As not the biggest cozy fantasy lover, I can’t say that I was obsessed with this book, but it did keep me wildly entertained. The stakes weren’t very high, but the town is full of a cast of characters I don’t soon forget. The town reminded me of a mix of The Truman Show and Wanda Vision but modern, and with a dash of What Lies Beneath sprinkled in.

This book has a golden retriever mmc done right. He’s just the right amount of protective while bending over backward for our girl. The second chance romance was executed so well, especially considering how sweet our mmc is.

This book was what I needed for my slump. I highly recommend if you’re looking for a fast, cute, romantic read with great family-centered character (I loved the fmc’s sisters!).

Thank you very much to Lobe on the Line for an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.

ARC book review

I was attracted by the cover and the magic, so I had to read this book and I was so happy when I got approved 🤩💕

This book was really good and so cute! It’s a cozy, second-chance magical romance ✨

Ivy is a secret witch, and so are her sisters. I really loved the relationship she has with them. As an older sister, I related to her at times because we just want to do what’s best for them without causing problems 🥹

Caleb is so lovely, and I absolutely loved his golden retriever personality. And damn… this man has SO much love and patience for Ivy, it was unbelievable at times because, honestly, I wanted to punch her for being so difficult and stuck in that “I can do everything alone” mindset 😭

I enjoyed this book so much! It’s fast-paced, full of magic, and has so many sweet moments. I also really loved the familiars each sister has 💗

I’m really excited for the next book, I love that each sister is going to have her moment, not just Ivy🙂‍↕️✨

Gunner might actually be my favorite 👀 he’s funny and keeps Ivy on her toes haha.

Thank you Lauren, LiteraryLoveOnTheLine, and Brittany Kelley for the eARC!

This was such a cute, cozy witchy romance with all the small-town vibes ✨ immediately I was excited to this book because between the sister dynamics and magical elements, it was giving Practical Magic vibes.

I also really enjoy the backstory and banter between Ivy and Caleb. It was adorable and Caleb truly is just a lover boy.

“Ivy. I couldn’t forget what you just told me, even if a thousand years had passed and this lighthouse was nothing but a crumbling ruin. I came back because you’re here."

And, of course, the slutty glasses are always a favorite for me!

That said, some parts of the story were very rushed while other parts were repeated more than needed, which pulled me out of it at times. I just wanted a little more depth in some of the bigger moments..especially between Caleb and Ivy.

But it was a quick, cozy read so if you’re in the mood for light magic, banter, and a soft romance, this is the book for you 💫

Thank you to Brittany Kelley for this eARC! In exchange for this advanced copy, I have agreed to leave an honest review of Curse me Maybe.

As someone who historically loves Brittany’s humor, I felt that a lot of the humor in this book fell flat for me. In large part, I think this is because the plot and book itself were very rushed. Because this is a second-chance romance, I would have loved to see some of the actual background of Caleb and Ivy’s story, but we really only get small comments here and there.

In the first 30% I really struggled to keep going but once I finally got more of the story put together this was an easier read. I really wish this book had been longer though because everything just felt very rushed. There wasn’t a lot of background on Ivy and her sisters and conflict was resolved swiftly with little explanation.

Despite my struggles with Curse me Maybe, I am excited to watch this new series and the world contained in it evolve. Of course, I am also looking forward to our next big release from Brittany!

This is the epitome of cute and cozy.

In a small coastal town lives 3 witch sisters (the fourth is off traveling and discovering herself). The sisters’ quirky magic keeps the town running, maybe even more than they realize. When Ivy’s childhood love comes back to town to fix up the old lighthouse, everything goes haywire. Is it because she’s panicking that he’s back or is it the family curse? You’ll have to read for yourself…

Okay now that my sales pitch like blurb is done, I definitely enjoyed the ease of this read. It had so much charm - from the unique magic each sister has to the different familiars (there’s a talking dog and I loved him). It’s what definitely kept me reading. Unfortunately the plot fell a little flat for me. That’s why I could only give it 3 stars. I thought there was much left to be explored with the witches family history, the curse, even the main characters back story. Maybe we’ll get more in later books 👀

Even with the critiques this was a quick easy ready that would be good as a palette cleanser. Especially during the fall cozy time.

This was a very cute second chance romance with a magical twist.

Ivy, owns a sweet shop in the town of Silverlight Shores. She, along with her 3 sisters have magic and familiars who talk and have cute dialogue throughout the story.

The book starts with Ivy feeling something has changed in the air and is surprised to see that her ex is back in town and the magic that was put in place as a ward for their town seems to be broken. Her sisters must work together to replace the ward to help protect the people
of Silverlight Shores.

I was hooked from the beginning, but then it seemed rushed and had a lot of unnecessary dialogue between the two main characters.

I felt their story and relationship was a little rushed but I loved the descriptive language to describes town and magic that she felt. I loved Gunner and how he protected her.

This was such a cute second chance romance with all the cozy witchy vibes!

Ivy is the older sister of the Romantics. She feels that trouble is approaching to their small town of Silverlight Shore. Ivy and her sisters are witches, a secret that they guard very deeply. When Ivy's ex returns to town, Ivy's powers start manifesting in estrange ways and she can't explain why. Caleb is the only man Ivy has ever loved and their breakup was out of fear he will never accept who she is but now that the town is in danger she needs to confess to Caleb who she truly is hoping he will accept her and not fear her.

There are a lot of strange things happening and Ivy, her sisters and their familiars need to figure out what to do in order to save the town.

This was a feel good read and very low angst. I really enjoyed the characters, plot and how Caleb and Ivy find their way to each other.

Thank you to the author and Love on the Line for the ARC.

i really wanted to love this more than i did.

unfortunately, the story felt quite rushed for me, especially in parts that should have had more emotional weight. a lot of the important plot points seemed to be resolved too quickly, while other details were repeated often enough that it disrupted the flow of the story.

because of that, i found it hard to stay fully immersed. i kept getting pulled out of the story instead of feeling drawn deeper into it.

the romance, in particular, didn’t fully work for me. i didn’t really feel the connection between the two main characters, and i was missing that sense of longing or yearning that usually makes me root for a couple. their relationship felt more told than felt, and it developed a bit too quickly for me to truly believe in it.

overall, i can still see this being an enjoyable and fast-paced read for many readers. it just might not have been the perfect fit for me personally. but truly, thank you so much for the arc—the opportunity

This is an adorable cozy magical mystery tale. Ivy lives in Silverlight Shore, which is set along the ocean in a quirky and friendly coastal town (she has visions). Caleb, her first love comes back to town (he has so many green flags, I couldn't keep track), and their obvious pining for each other is so palpable even the fish are rolling their eyes. The thing is that Ivy and her sisters do magical things. Their talking familiars are so adorable. They live in a magic Victorian house that cleans itself, Ivy encounters a talking Kraken, oh and Octopi come and help with clean up at Ivy's candy store when a storm passes through.

This is super funny, super swoony and great characters. Ivy and Caleb can handle anything together and the sisters are great supporting cast members. Can't wait to see what shenanigans the next books get them into.

Que leitura tão fofinha! Adorei adorei adorei.

As a cozy fantasy romance, this was really cute, but there was honestly nothing keeping me wanting to read it. I'm not a huge fantasy girl and I was hoping that something this quick paced was going to change my mind especially because the tropes were super interesting.

I personally found myself not wanting to pick up the book because I just either didn't get it or I wasn't interested in what was going on. I think it's a cute read but personally I wasn't attached to anything that made me want to continue reading. There were also terms that I didnt fully understand (like familiars) and I continued to read because I thought it would get better. Eventually it made sense, but for a while I was like ???

I think there is potential there and it's a really cute story, it just wasnt for me.

Thank you Lauren and Brittany for the ARC!

This was such a fun read! The best way to describe it is that it was a cozy, chaotic, funny, witchy rom-com!

Ivy Romantic and her 3 sisters are witches living in a small coastal town. The magic around them starts acting up and its up to them to save their idyllic town. But will this mean giving up childhood love, Caleb Mercer, once again?

Caleb is such a golden retriever. I loved him! The banter between the sisters and their familiars (hello, talking dog?! Gimme!) was so fun. Also, how cute is this cover?!😍

It wasn't my favorite of her books but it was cute!

this was the definition of cute & cozy!! I genuinely enjoyed reading this. Ivy’s character was relatable, but Caleb was the star. he was swoony & absolutely just a top tier guy. the town & concept of this book was very fun. im not usually one for second chance romances, but this one felt realistic & I just enjoyed seeing them come back together bc in no world were Ivy & Caleb NOT meant to be.

I loved all the side characters & the small town cozy magical vibe ✨

also a talking DOGGIE familiar? SAY LESS. I wish!!!! can’t wait to see where the rest of the small town romantics series goes!!
