In the advent of superheroes, four friends get the power to transform into their RPG characters.
Imagine you and your four friends are playing a tabletop roleplaying game. You have your characters with your backstories and their classes all primed to go. Now, everyone gets superpowers, including you. You can turn into your character, but to make the most of it, you need to level up like you would in the game.
This story, to me, hits that itch for superheroes and progression fantasy. They are constantly growing both emotionally and in their stats, as they navigate college, relationships, and monsters.
I’m really impressed with how well the book has done a great job of blending an RPG-style set of powers with a world of superheroes and monsters. All the characters feel like they have dimensions to them, even the ones who at first may appear shallow.
The only word of caution I might give is that this story has some very crunchy parts to it. I know some people don’t enjoy crunchy books, but I enjoy the crunch, so this is a plus to me.
Would I recommend this to my past self: Yes. I got so invested I finished half the book in one night. Fortunately, book two is out with book three on the way.

Fun, light-hearted, upbeat, and packed with action and humor. If the Sailor Moon girls were slightly less bubbly but no less earnest, and had fantasy tabletop powers in a world where other people had bonafide super hero powers, you’d get something akin to Zero.Hero.
While this book is slightly more gritty and a bit more violent than the aforementioned fan favorite, it is no less charming or captivating, and keeps the pages turning at a rapid pace throughout. It may be more targeted at a YA audience, but as someone in their late 30’s, I didn’t find the experience less enjoyable in any way. Can’t wait to read the second installment.
