Erica’s father, Laird Bryden, and her brother Evander, were branded as traitors (for reasons we do not know) and had disappeared three months ago. While she and her mother waited for their return, other lairds were sizing them up for a takeover. Although he claimed to be supportive of the Bryden clan, it was quite clear that Laird MacGee had personal designs on Erica. In order to save her people, Erica attended the Leanan Love Festival in hopes of finding a laird to stand by them until her father and brother returned. Everyone wore masks at the festival, and Erica requested help from multiple lairds, but as soon as she mentioned Bryden, they stepped away. Unfortunately, Laird MacGee found her, grabbed her arm and intended to force her to go with him. Desperate, she told him that she was betrothed, pointed out a specific laird and then quietly asked that man for help. He protected her, but since she publicly announced that they were betrothed, festival rules stated that he could claim her and make the betrothal real….and he did. They made a one month arrangement wherein Erica and her mother would reside at his castle, she would help with his twin daughters, and stand by him when necessary. In the meantime, inquiries regarding her father and brother would be made. The tale that follows is filled with everyday avtivities, mischevious acts, grandmotherly advice, scorching kisses, distressing revelations, threats, danger, betrayal, and emotional upheaval. Characterwise, there is a rigidness and emotional remoteness to Alex, in spite of the fact that he is quite good with the twins, and seems to adore his grandmother. Erica is a strong woman with body image issues who wants some independence and to be valued. Grandmamma is an eighty year old matriarch with fingers in every pie, and Lady Bryden is kind and loving, but seems deflated by the situation with her husband and son. Calum is Alex’s childhood friend and man-at-arms, Leah seems to be the servant in the know, and Bettie and Katie provide the much needed comic relief. This story is well written, filled with cryptic dialogue, and keeps you waiting for the other shoe to drop. Well done!
Raising the Laird’s Twins by Lydia Kendall was such a sweet and heartwarming read! This story has a slower, gentle pace that really lets you settle into the characters and their lives, and I loved every minute of it.
The characters were truly the highlight for me. They felt so genuine and easy to connect with, and I loved watching the relationship between the main characters develop naturally over time. And the twins? Absolutely adorable! They added so many warm and touching moments that made this story even more special.
I also really enjoyed stepping back into a historical romance. It was such a refreshing change of pace between all the romantasy books I usually read. The cozy atmosphere, strong character development, and heartfelt moments made this such an enjoyable escape.
Overall, this was a lovely, feel-good Highland romance with wonderful characters and a romance that unfolds in the sweetest way. If you’re looking for a slower, heartfelt historical romance, I definitely recommend giving this one a try! 💕📚
There was some substance to the book. Was confused about the rules of the festival even with reading the prologue. The title was like the 3rd subplot, even if the children were in most of the book. I need more diversity when describing things. The words clean and clear were used way too much, over 60 times each. Found out the mfc had red hair 50% through the book, made me realize I didn’t know what everyone else really looked like. I wanted to dnf like 10 times but I was curious about how it would end.
As Erica tries to save herself from the grasp of a ruthless neighboring Laird when her father and brother are accused of treason and suspiciously disappear, she seeks help from the most infamous Laird in the land: Alexander MacMillan. They make a bargain of protection for 30 days only. What begins as a contract is soon complicated by the intervention of Alex's twin daughters and threatening notes from an unknown source. Great story with compelling characters and a shocking twist at the end.
All she wanted was to protect her family and when danger comes calling, she latches on to the most dangerous man of all, Laird Alex but his protection comes with a price. Will Erica be able to pay the price and land in the field of happily ever after as well. This medieval romance had me all caught up in the characters and cheering on Laird Alex and Erica to finding happiness. I am volunteering to leave a review for an ARC of this book.
It was an ok book. It wasn’t bad but it did have some holes in the storyline. It just didn’t keep you riveted and want to not put it down. No explanation of why dad and brother were traitors (it kind of hinted but there was no explanation when the circumstances changed). The girls seem to go from 5 to 8 year olds in a flash. So spoilers… * * * * The bad guy ?? 🤷♀️ goes no-where. When she went to the dance and was hitting up all the guys just nonsensical. Then bc of the bad guy she runs to a big bad looking dude and says marry me? He wasn’t even facing her. But he was the biggest and baddest.
The story has both pros and cons. I found the short rapid sentences to be a distraction. The story doesn’t flow but seems to jerk the Reader through the events. The dialogue seems abrupt and sometimes difficult to follow. The actual story has potential with love interest, betrayal and a villain. The ending was abrupt and somewhat under developed.
Enjoy reading a different era in a different tongue but as love goes the heart will capture. The mystery and control of the Laird is to command everyone to his direction. Love will always leave him without control that only his heart will follow as he bends knee to its demand.
Love wins in the end! This one was a little different, started slow for me, it picked up a little later, but I loved it, only took about 6 hours to read so that says a lot to me, would recommend! I love any and all of her books.
What a story this is. What Alex went thru in his past causes wrong decisions. Erica has pledged to help Alex but both of them find out pasts cannot be forgotten. This is a must read.
A really awesome book to read! The characters were incredibly brave and very interesting!!! Especially the twins and grandmamma. The adventure was exciting and very interesting. Thanks for taking me on a grand adventure!!!
A excellent book, the story of Alex and Erica and their fake betrothal. The book has a great storyline and some great characters, like grandmama and the twins. Well worth a read
You have to fall for these twins! What a hard fought love for Alex & Erica! Her courage was a marvel & what a laird! Best line is: They kissed again, closing the distance their fear had built.
What a wonderful story. It all starts at a festival since she is desperate not to marry an old man. Alex's twin girls are delightful, as well as his wise grandmother. Their battle of wills is good until they can solve their problem and the bad guy is a bit of a surprise.
The ending on this one caught me by surprise. Good job! The characters are wonderful and so engaging. The storyline is very good with excellent pacing. A very good read indeed!
