Thanks to Edelweiss and Viz for providing me with this book.

So fun to be back with these characters! As the volumes have gone on, there has been an increasing focus on the plot and the politics of the world, which I really enjoy. This is also coming on the back of some very serious volumes, so this one is a bit more lighthearted.

Definitely some new intriguing plot points in this volume. I like how integrated all the families are becoming. Everyone is interacting with everyone else now and I like seeing the different dynamics that arise from that. There's definitely a tightrope to walk in making sure that the reader doesn't get frustrated from all the secret-keeping that is happening. I think that has been well done so far but I do hope that these characters start learning a bit more about each other soon, even if it isn't the full truth.

Maybe at some point I'll switch over to reading these chapters as they come out but until I decide to do that, I will look forward to the next volume.

It has been almost two years since I followed the serialized chapters of Spy x Family that going into volume 16 feels like the hard reset I needed to get into the adventures of the Forgers again.

It's a new school term for Anya with new classmates, a new patient for Loid, and a new mission for Yor which also introduced a new colleague in Garden.

It's good to be back to reading Spy x Family again.

--

EN This is mainly a character development volume, without any major active story arcs.

Anya continues to be the true star of the series thanks to her ability to read minds. Donovan Desmond’s second son is finally beginning to realize that he has feelings for her, even if he refuses to admit it.

Yor’s brother remains such a ridiculous and pathetic character. I constantly find myself rolling my eyes at everything he says and does. Even so, in the end, he managed to show a genuinely touching side of himself.

The beginning of this volume dragged a bit for me, and I ended up picking it back up a couple of months later and rereading those and the newer chapters, but I still think the first bit of this volume drags a bit compared to the rest. Other than that, I really enjoyed the rest of the chapters and am always glad to have Yor focused chapters. We got to meet some new characters, which is always fun, and it seems like some major things are going to happen in the next couple of volumes.

Melinda Desmond. Sitting with her back turned, radiates “I know something you don’t”.

Elegant, eerie, and all kinds of intriguing. The calm before whatever storm she’s quietly orchestrating.

There’s a lot of decent stuff in this volume, including a pretty terrific fight scene featuring Yor that has some amazingly fun touches to it. I don’t often say this, but this series could stand to have more action in it.

What I don’t love is the opening, which is one of those things that won’t bug most people but gets under my skin. It’s par for the course during (cold) wartime, but seeing Loid using his position as a therapist to pump somebody for information is kind of icky.

It also leads to a revelation that I suspect is meant to actually be taken literally and primes the pump for the Anya vs. Desmond fight I would love to see things end on. But that’ll be another day.

As usual, Anya gets to steal a lot of this volume, although I could do without the amount of snot her storyline involves. The way she manages to parlay her diminished academics into impressing a prince is funny stuff, however.

What’s even better is how that leads to Damian becoming jealous (thanks to Becky’s hysterical extrapolations and notions of romance) and his friends helping him in the silliest way possible. This brings out Damian’s chunibyo tendencies in ridiculous fashion and has a stupendously good payoff.

Elsewhere, Yuri says things and he’s one of my least favourite characters so we can skip analyzing that chapter. It has a little more humour, but the way this plays his sister complex is like every other sister complex I’ve seen. And I hate sister complexes as a rule.

And then there’s the Yor action chapters, which I clearly appreciated, even moreso because it typically feels like the mangaka never knows what to do with her at the best of times. Examining the notion that family makes her weaker is a good angle and I liked how it played out too.

It’s yet another truly 3.5 star volume I need to figure out the rounding on. I am overall okay with the series, but I do think it has begun to struggle to hold my interest as it has gone on.

3.5 stars - some stuff good, some stuff bad, but giving something to Yor and having strong Anya presence makes this barely get the nod upwards amidst some lesser stuff.

This was another strong volume. The plot is finally moving forward again, and we get a peak into Anya's past, which intrigues me. Still plenty of laughs as well.

Here we are once again and I am eager to dive in. Much like my last few reviews of recent volumes we are going in deep on this one. This was a real rollercoaster of a volume. It starts out really intense and immediately throws us for a loop with a direction I was truly not expecting. We then dropped back into normalcy for some funny antics with the kids. And finally we get a true deep dive into Yor’s assassin life.

To start out this examination of the volume I want to start at the cover. One of the things I adore with these covers is the way the author uses them to convey things about the characters. I believe it was in the guidebook that Tatsuya Endo explained that the objects around the chairs represent aspects of the character and that when they are behind/under the chair that is something the character is hiding while objects in front are more public facing facets of them. For Melinda then there is so much to be observed from her appearance on the cover. For starters she is facing away from us, while everyone else in their cover faces the reader. I feel that this is a very obvious reference to how Melina is closed off from the world, she is distrusting and private. The three objects then in frame with her are also quite interesting. At the front is the volleyball, a part of her public facing lady patriots persona. Then hiding underneath her chair is a crystal ball referencing her interest in the occult and fortune telling we learned about last volume. The last item is by far the most perplexing item prior to reading the volume. It's the moon. Initially I had two thoughts at the sight of this object: 1) Anya’s powers have some connection to the moon as she loses her ability to read minds during the new moon. But what could that have to do with Melina, so nothing there. 2) There are strong connections to the moon and the occult so maybe that's it, but then why is it not alongside the crystal ball? It was a very confusing thing to see on the cover but it makes a lot more sense once we get more into the story so lets start moving along in that direction.

And jumping in we immediately pick up where we left off with Melinda visiting Loid at the hospital. Which, while a gripping cliffhanger for the last volume, is immediately softened by a bit of humorous continuity. I love that Yor keeps bringing up Loid’s “concussive therapy” treatment from way back at the start of the series and that Loid keeps having to deflect away from it. I also like how everyone in this world is a little dumb and sort of finds it plausible. Everyone had so much going on in their own lives that they really do not give a second thought to some crazy stuff sometimes. Its also really cool to see Loid actually do some therapy, we have seen this at least once before but its just a really cool element to his character to see how his fake job is supposed to further his mission. And just when you think Melinda is going to spill the beans and open up to Loid in a way that will explain her strange state of mind, she brings up UFOs. I had to take a moment because this felt like a total nonsequiter. Loid then does try to regain control of the conversation before Melinda says this next thing, which is truly baffling, that she believes her husband to be an Alien. Now I find Donovan Desmond to be a strange and unsettling man, but I doubt he has been replaced by an alien. But this train of thought that Melinda goes down is still interesting. Something has clearly happened to him and since Melina is a fan of the occult the fact that the conclusion she reached was aliens is in character. And the main thing that she believe has happened is that he can now read minds. Which would explain a lot of things about his behavior, why the older of the Desmond boys has a completely blank mind, and why he has yet to be placed near Anya. It's possible, and the ramifications this could have on the story are fascinating. But it also feels a little too easy of an answer. Now depending on how close Spy X Family is to reaching its conclusion, which in all other aspects of the narrative does not feel particularly close, this could be the answer and this is how we start solidifying it. I’m just not sure. At the very least, going forward I’ll keep this in mind and we can see how things pan out. There are a lot of directions the story can be going if this is true, if it isn’t true, or even if the characters just believe it to be true. Only time will tell. Some other things I like near the end of this conversation is the defection Loid makes away from Donovan being an alien, which is a bit silly, and the notebook that Loid gives Melinda. That feels like it will be important, so let’s keep an eye out for it reappearing.

Then we get mission 111. Baby Anya and her Mother. With the same little hair bumps and both appearing to be wearing some sort of medical gown based on the way it ties in the back. Honestly, more questions than answers. Worth noting though that this was a memory that came to Anya in a dream that she doesn’t seem to really remember when she wakes up. A storytelling device we have seen in the past with Twilight and his wartorn past. This is a very short chapter, it makes me uneasy, it's suspicious. Nothing i here is brought back up in the volume so let's just put a pin in this one and continue on.

The next chapter finds us back at school after the break, so you know what that means, antics. The fist thing that really stands out to me here in the opening few pages is how casual Anya is with everyone. There has been a lot of bonding with each of her friends and family over the past volumes and I think we are finally starting to see the results of that. At the very least her and Damian aren’t throwing hands immediately. The other interesting thing that happens is that the kids really are getting divided into new classes for certain subjects. Which allows for some interesting things to happen, Anya and Damian end up in one class together without the rest of their friends and Anya ends up in a lot by herself. This is an opportunity for us to have some new characters introduced and for a few of the ones we met back at the dance to show up again. We also get this very interesting dynamic of Anya by herself. She doesn’t have her friends to bounce off of and she specifically doesn’t have Damian so no mission things are happening. Without these factors Anya is a very interesting person to watch. The way she acts with her telepathy when not using it to try and achieve world peace is interesting. You can also just tell she is very relaxed in this setting and says a lot of things that are very her, that normally send her friends into a tizzy which this group of kids respond to very differently. The overall ‘plot’ of this chapter is very silly and more than anything is just establishing more of these kids as real characters.

The really interesting thing that the end of that last chapter does is show that Anya can make fast friends, or at least can give of a very charismatic performance and have solid new acquaintances. Which leads Damian down a small jealousy spiral. I love their little puppy love story with Damian having and continually denying his crush on Anya. It's a great subplot and I love when it show up. I also quite like how in an attempt to be good friends with Damian, Ewen and Emile also catch some slight jealousy at an imaginary friend of Damian's. This all culminates in them learning a lesson of how to deal with feelings of jealousy. It's a good moment of them all growing as people which is another kind of subplot we get every once in a while with this group.

Our next chapter is a Yuri chapter and I must be honest with y’all, he is my least favorite character. I just hate his obsession with Yor, it’s weird. If he could just tone that down a bit I think I would like him because he has his moments of being quite an interesting character but his over the top obsessive antics tend to turn me off of him. Near the end of this chapter though it felt a lot like we're setting up some character growth for him so hopefully that moves him in a better direction.

This next section is back to being really interesting for the story at large because we are finally learning more about Garden, the people that Yor works for and alongside. The last time we had any significant interaction with this group was back during the cruise ship storyline and even then we only scraped the surface of what Garden does. Here we actually see how they get some of their intel, learn what drives their overall philosophy and most interestingly we meet more people in the organization. I like that they all have plant themed code names, specifically dangerous plants at that. They also have a lot of cool designs and I hope that they come back in the future. Something about them reminds me a lot of the character design for Bleach. With all these new characters and time spent on assignment with Yor it really pulls her up to a level playing field with Twilight and Yuri. Just in terms of characters in her orbit and the depth of her assassin work. We have spent some time with her city hall coworkers but that feels more like Anya hanging out with Becky, the civilian life. But this is so much more like the spy missions we see from Twilight, it’s exciting. I would also love to lock Hemlock, Fiona, and Yuri in a room together because that all have a very similar energy to them that they really need to see in another person to understand how wild they each are.

As then to wrap this whole volume up we have our final image, the covers mirror. I always like these little illustrations that show a bit more of the characters character. Much like the last few this one takes Melinda back in time and shows her with a much younger Demitrius and Damian. It’s cute. And a good send off for a solid volume.

Up to chapter 123

This manga makes me fall in love a little bit mroe with each new addition. They're so perfect to me, I can't even put it into words. I feel like they have every single thing I ever want in a story:
- compelling characters
- compelling relationships
- excellent friendships
- EXQUISIT HUMOR
- 10/10 dialogue
- intriguing, insightful, beautiful commentary about aspects of humanity.
- super accurate representation of being all kinds of ages (from children to elderly).
- cry potential (both sad and happy crying)
- the slowest, slow, slowy burn EVER. People only talk about the keeper of the lost cities but this is truly excruciating (just how I like it).
- cuteness (and this is the only thing people seem to talk about)
