Sadie Campbell has always tried to do the right thing. She never thought she'd end up with her heart broken- twice. And yet, this is where she finds herself... mad at God, disappointed in herself, and trying to find her way back to the girl she used to be- carefree, joyful, and full of hope.
Now a professional hockey player, Mason Gray never thought he'd find himself on the cusp of signing a life-changing contract, and still be pining after his high school sweetheart, the girl he let get away.
Set in Southwest Nova Scotia, where the lobster is plentiful and community equates to family, Returning Home is a heartfelt romance about finding love after life hasn't gone according to plan. Just as likely to make you laugh as it is to make you cry, readers are taken on a journey of hope, healing and a renewed understanding that mistakes don't define who we are, only God can do that.
I was truly blown away by how moving this debut novel was. Christie’s writing feels effortless, and her storytelling unfolds with such grace and precision. The themes of this story will stay with me. I took away so many meaningful lessons, and I’m already looking forward to reading more of her work in the future.
For a first time author I am completely overwhelemed how good this book is. It was thought provoking, funny, romantic and the characters are easy to love. I quickly found myself invested in ways I did not anticipate.
If you grew up in the church in the '90's this feels like a nostalgic throwback! Christie beautifully weaves faith in to this book that doesnt feel forced or heavy-handed. Somewhere between the romance and the character development I found myself changed with a renewed sense of how deeply Jesus loves us.
I am truly in awe of this talented local author and the beautiful story she has created. This book is incredibly well written, with a sweet and engaging storyline that keeps you turning the pages. The characters are so genuine and lovable—you can’t help but root for them every step of the way. It’s a heartfelt and uplifting story incorporating prayer and faith, woven together with care and authenticity. The message is powerful without feeling heavy, and it leaves a lasting impression. I truly can’t say enough good things about this book. It makes it even more special knowing the author is from Yarmouth—and that it’s self-published is just so impressive! I’m already looking forward to future books by Christie. Thank you, Christie, for sharing this great story with the world.
This book was a joy to read. From start to finish the storyline is engaging and thoughtfully crafted, drawing you in with both heart and depth. I especially appreciated how the story unfolds in a way that keeps you turning the pages. The themes are woven together in a way that feels authentic and relatable. You see pieces of yourself in the characters – their doubts, their hopes, their struggles and their growth. It’s a reminder that none of us are immune to challenges, but we are never alone in them. This book gently reminds us that through life’s inevitable ups and downs, it’s easy for our faith to waver. Yet even on our most difficult seasons we are called to let go and let God!
As a person of strong faith this book truly spoke to me. It reflected the quiet struggles we sometimes carry – the moments when we question, when we wait, and when we try to hold everything together ourselves. The story is a powerful reminder that faith is not about perfection, but about trust – trusting that even when we cannot see the full picture, God is still at work. That message resonated deeply with my own journey.
This is a beautiful and relatable read, and an impressive first book from a local author, whose voice and insight I greatly respect. I look forward to seeing what she writes next.
A friend had told me about Christie's book and I was intrigued because it was someone local. I thought it might be cheesy but it was not! It was easy to read; hard to put down. I loved the local lore weaved throughout the book - making me guess at which places she was referring to and knowing some immediately. Most of all, I loved how Christie weaved in forgiveness and seeing ourselves as God sees us. I'm not divorced but I could see how much of a blessing this would be to many of the folks I know that are. I will be forever recommending this book.
This book is amazing and I have recommended it to everyone I know. With great writing, an interesting storyline, and being very realistic and meaningful book it is a 5 star book. This is an amazing debut novel and I can’t wait for this next one!
What a delightful read! I so enjoyed following Sadie and Mason through the twists and turns of their past, and present circumstance. I loved them right away, and was in their corner from the start. I spent a lot of time grinning, and was invested in the characters and story immediately. Author, Christie MacDonald, had me on the edge of my seat and kept me guessing. This story is full of missed chances, unexpected outcomes, lessons learned, and hope. Would definitely recommend wholeheartedly!
