Kate Galley writes UpLit and Bookclub fiction full of heart and humour. The older generation are at the centre of her stories and are usually wrapped up in a mystery.
She lives with her family in Buckinghamshire and works part time as a mobile hairdresser in the surrounding Chiltern villages.
In her spare time she crochets blankets, knits jumpers and also disappears into her workshop to play with kiln formed glass.
Kate is the author of The Second Chance Holiday Club – which has been optioned for TV – and The Golden Girls' Road Trip. Old Girls Behaving Badly is the first book in a new series introducing Gina Knight. The Old Girls' Chateau Escape sees Gina and Dorothy on a new adventure in the south of France. The Last Laugh Club is a standalone and follows Gloria, Derek and Bridget as they travel to the Shetland Islands to scatter the ashes of an old friend. Her latest book brings us back to The Old Girls series. Gina and Dorothy are on the sun soaked island of Corfu in The Old Girls' Island Getaway.
This is my first Kate Galley book, but I’m really hoping it won’t be my last. It’s a fun, sun soaked romp set on the beautiful island of Corfu, full of humour, friendship, and escapism. Although it appears to be part of a series, it works perfectly well as a standalone, and I had no trouble diving straight in and enjoying the adventure.
Dorothy is nearly ninety and employs Gina, at seventy one, as her carer — though their relationship quickly blossoms into a genuine, heart warming friendship. When Dorothy’s old friend Rupert invites them to stay at his beautiful villa in Corfu, they accept with delight. At the last minute, Dorothy’s teenage granddaughter joins them too, and in true teenage fashion proves to be quite a handful. Meanwhile, when film star Florence suddenly breaks up with her MP husband and a scandal looms, her manager — another of Rupert’s old friends — arranges for her to hide away at the villa as well. What follows is a lively mix of secrets, lies, murder, intrigue, and even a touch of romance. It all comes together into a wonderfully entertaining story.
This was such an enjoyable, feel good read, full of sunshine, mischief, and the kind of unexpected friendships that make a story sparkle. Kate Galley balances humour, heart, and a touch of mystery beautifully, creating characters who are quirky, endearing, and impossible not to root for. By the end, I was completely swept up in the chaos and camaraderie of this unlikely group, and I closed the book with a big smile. A delightful escape from start to finish.
The Old Girls' Island Getaway is a joyful, escapist novel centred on a group of women - Dorothy, Gina, Florence and Dorothy's teenage granddaughter Juliet. Dorothy, Gina and Juliet head to Corfu to visit Rupert, an old friend of Dorothy's. Actress Florence (who the others only know by reputation) has also been invited to stay, to escape the imminent scandal surrounding her MP husband. As friendships old and new collide, the trip becomes about far more than sunshine and relaxation when Florence explains she has another reason for wanting to visit the island. Set against the glorious backdrop of the Greek Island, the story blends humour, warmth and gentle reflection as the women navigate not just the holiday but one another.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable read, light hearted, easygoing and sprinkled with just enough twists to keep things interesting. The vivid descriptions of Corfu, bursting with sunshine, beaches and lush greenery make it the perfect antidote to a bleak, rainy February in England. It's entertaining and witty, with genuinely likeable characters. The intergenerational dynamic of young, old and somewhere in between is handled with real charm and insight.
I have read and enjoyed Kate Galley's novels before, though this was my first dip into her 'Old Girls Club' series. It worked perfectly well as a standalone, just as I read it. Whenever I am in the mood for an easy, amusing and adventurous mood I will be reading the others for sure.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for my advanced reader copy in return for my honest and unbiased review.
This was a fun read, though it had some serious issues and moments. I enjoyed my time on the island with Dorothy, Gina, and Juliet. It was fun meeting the people they met and the bit of mystery surrounding Florence and her true love. This book would be a good read for vacation or a weekend because it is a quick, easy read.
I received an advanced copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for my opinion.
Thank you to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for this E-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I did not realize that this was the third book in a series. However, that did not stop me from having the greatest time and now that I know, I will simply read them all from the beginning! I loved this book. I think I love books about mischievous older people doing detective work and getting in to trouble while vacation on beautiful islands. Is that a trope? If so, I’ll read them all. There is just something extremely beautiful about reading a book about older people who are not just sitting in old folks homes.
This was funny and mysterious and really a thoughtful read. I can’t explain how much I loved this book. I know it says it took me a few days to read it but that is simply because, unfortunately, I have to go to work. Otherwise this would’ve been a one sitting read. I will also be adding Corfu to my travel bucket list.
Dorothy and Gina are back again for another adventure. This time in Corfu. They bring along Dorothy’s granddaughter Juliet, who meets a beautiful Greek boy, with some special things to say about their host Rupert. Dorothy’s old friend Rupert invited the girls over to his island house for a little getaway and reminiscing. Dorothy is very excited to get to see her dear old friend again but that is quickly ruined by a surprise guest. A mysterious surprise guest who seems to be hiding some secrets. Dorothy and Gina will uncover those secrets in no time.
This is a great, fun, and cute read. I highly recommend it.
Dorothy and Gina may be separated by twenty years, but their friendship is timeless. At seventy-one and nearly ninety, life’s too short not to have a little fun – especially in Corfu.
Another wonderful installment in the Old Girls series and I simply cannot get enough of Gina and Dorothy. The author does a lovely job of balancing grief and loss with friendship and laughter. Set on the stunningly beautiful island of Corfu, I found myself looking up photographs on line so I could see the surroundings described so vividly in the book. My favorite of the series so far!
EXCERPT: 'My friend, Rupert, has written to ask if I'll go and visit him. I haven't seen him for years and I really would love to go while I still can. Of course, I'd need you to come with me, Gina. I'm thinking just after the Easter weekend. How does that sound?' It sounded like I'd be packing my bags again in a fortnight's time. 'If you'd like me to accompany you, Dorothy, then of course I will. And we'd stay with Rupert, would we?' 'Oh, yes. Rupert has plenty of room. Since his wife Eleni died, he's rather been rattling around in that huge place of his. Poor old chap. I knew he wouldn't be too good on his own. He's not been very well and could do with some support, I think.' 'Where does Rupert live?' Erik asked the question that was hovering on my own lips. A lot of Dorothy's friends were in London, but some were a little further afield. We'd been as far as Durham to visit an old school friend of hers just after Christmas. 'Rupert has a beautiful villa near Kassiopi,' Dorothy said. 'It's really quite something with spectacular views out to the sea.' 'Kassiopi?' I said, not immediately able to place the name. 'Corfu,' Erik said, looking a little wistful. 'Kassiopi is on the beautiful island of Corfu.'
ABOUT 'THE OLD GIRLS' ISLAND GETAWAY': Dorothy and Gina may be separated by twenty years, but their friendship is timeless. At seventy-one and nearly ninety, life’s too short not to have a little fun – especially in Corfu.
When Dorothy is invited to visit an old friend at his villa, she insists Gina comes along. They’re looking forward to sunshine, sea breezes, and perhaps a dash of ouzo. But their plans are upended by an unexpected guest: glamorous actress Florence Quinn, who’s taken up residence in the pool house.
Florence may sparkle on the surface, but she’s hiding something – and someone – from her past. Determined to help, Dorothy and Gina embark on a quest across the island, only to find that Corfu holds more secrets, scandals, and surprises than they ever imagined.
MY THOUGHTS: The Old Girls series is my absolute favorite in this genre and their Island Getaway is the third book in the series. I adore both main characters, Dorothy who is 90 and who, although her body is starting to slow her down, has just as much zest for life as she ever had; and Gina, her companion, a naturally more reticent person who on whom Dorothy's love of life is beginning to rub off on. If you haven't read this series before, I suggest you begin at the beginning with Old Girls Behaving Badly so you get the full story behind these amazing women.
No matter where they go, Dorothy and Gina seemed to get involved in some sort of mystery or drama. This time it's both with the introduction of actress Florence Quinn and Dorothy's fourteen-year-old granddaughter, Juliet, into the mix. Florence is going through some personal dramas and needs to hide out for a while, but she is also on a quest to find her first ever love whom she met on Corfu when she was sixteen. Juliet brings a lot to the story. She falls in love for the first time, is quite willful and disobedient at times, but shows great presence of mind at others.
I was immediately immersed in this latest adventure. And, as always, I wanted somehow to belong in this group of friends.
In The Old Girls' Island Getaway there's some adventure, a beautiful setting, a little romance, some unexpected action, and a mystery or two to be solved. My jaw dropped at the end and, while it's not quite a cliffhanger, it has me eager to get my hands on Old Girls #4.
A fun read with wonderful characters (except for Douglas!)

While the focus here is on the characters and their connection, there's a bit of intrigue and drama mixed in. Dorothy and Gina are still enjoying life even as the aches and pains, not to mention regrets of life, keep invading. They're joined this go-round by Dorothy's artistically talented grand-daughter who also seems to have the knack for not always realizing (or caring?) how her comments and questions are taken. She's likable but, well, would be a possible embarrassment at any given moment, too. They're invited to the estate of Rupert, a long time friend of Dorothy's, who doesn't seem to have long to live. It's an amazing place, too, including private boats and such, not to mention Ioannis, who I guess you'd call has aide and driver. Then they're joined by movie star Florence who is about to be caught up in the drama of a divorce sure to create a media frenzy after her husband's statement. Her story is an important aspect of the book and provides a shocking twist at the end. Oddly enough, that one's topped soon by a discovery by Dorothy.
I won't detail the plot but it's multi-layered diving into past and present lives and the expectations of each. It took me awhile to get into the story but I'm leaning toward that just being a harsh real world invading my thoughts way too often of late. The characters are likable, even one who appears shady at first meet, and one wishes they could join them on some of their adventures. Dorothy and Gina's impulsive swim sounded delightful. Getting to know Florence, too, was intriguing, reminding us all that what we see on screen isn't necessarily what the actor is really like as a real person. I'm sorta hoping we will get an update on her life in future books, have to admit. The story, while slow to me initially, moves ahead nicely despite leisurely detours for fun and frolic.
Bottom line,I enjoyed my time with Dorothy, Gina, and friends. Well, not so much Gina's ex-husband. I'm still not certain whether I'll ever warm up to him or not. Right now I'm rooting for Erik. Nope, not telling. Read the book. Like I said, multi-stories with multi-layers. Thanks #BoldwoodBooks for this early peek at how things are going in Gina's new life, not to mention some surprising twist hints for likely future story lines. Corfu sounds delightful, that's for sure, though know they'll find other fun places to explore and enjoy, not to mention people to get to know.
I've been enjoying The Old Girls books by Kate Galley, and this is the third one about these friends. Dorothy and Gina may be twenty years apart in age, 70 and almost 90, but they are great friends. Gina's husband left her in the first book, and she had to find a new place to live as their house was being sold. She answered an ad for a companion to an older woman. That's how she ends up living in Dorothy's boathouse. They have become friends and have lots of fun together, always getting up to something. Dorothy is invited to visit an old friend, Rupert, at his villa and she insists Gina comes along. At the last minute, Dorothy's 14 yo granddaughter also joins them. When they arrive, they discover that Florence Quinn, a famous actress is there living in the pool house. Florence is hiding something, so Gina and Dorothy take it upon themselves to help her out. This takes them on an adventure across Corfu.
Being an older reader, close to Gina's age, I love seeing what these gals get up to. This is a fun, enjoyable adventure with some laughs, some romance and some secrets. Florence's husband is an MP and she has left him. With scandal looming, she is hiding out at Rupert's villa. When Florence tells the ladies that she has another reason for being in Corfu, the fun begins. I love the setting and the descriptions are lovely. Juliet adds a lot of humor to this little group. I love books with intergenerational characters and the relationships they develop and nurture are wonderful. There are some twists, but the story is a lot of fun. This is a mystery, a story of friendship, and women supporting each other, all wrapped up in a lovely visit to Corfu. I listened to this book, narrated by Patricia Gallimore. She had narrated other books in this series and I enjoy her storytelling and voices. If you enjoy books with older characters enjoying life, then I recommend you pick up The Old Girls books in whatever format you enjoy.
The Old Girls' Island Getaway is yet another absolute delight in Kate Galley's heartwarming series, now spanning six books. Dorothy and Gina with their twenty-year age gap may seem like an unlikely pair, but their friendship is the real deal. At seventy-one and nearly ninety, these spunky and delightful women prove that life’s too short not to embrace a little fun—especially on the sun-drenched island of Corfu.
When Dorothy receives an invitation to visit an old friend at his villa, she insists that Gina join her for what promises to be a relaxing getaway filled with sunshine, sea breezes, and perhaps a splash of ouzo. Their idyllic plans take an unexpected turn with the arrival of glamorous actress Florence Quinn, who's settled into the pool house. Beneath Florence's sparkling exterior lies a hidden past—and a secret she's desperate to keep buried. Ever the determined duo, Dorothy and Gina, accompanied by fourteen year old Juliet, Dorothy’s granddaughter, set off on a quest across the island to uncover the truth, stumbling upon a treasure trove of secrets, scandals, and delightful surprises along the way.
This is a warm, witty, and adventurous tale that celebrates friendship, mischief, and the joy of unexpected discoveries. Kate Galley excels at portraying older characters with authenticity, depth, and humor, making every page feel vibrant and relatable. If you haven’t read the previous books in the series, this one stands perfectly well as a standalone.
Once you start reading, you won’t want to put it down—I couldn’t! I’m already eagerly awaiting the next installment. Highly recommended for fans of uplifting, feel-good fiction with a touch of Golden Girls charm.
Thanks to #NetGalley for providing me with an advanced digital copy in exchange for review.
The ninety five year old, ailing Rupert, a long time friend of Dorothy's, invited her to visit his home on the island of Corfu for what would likely be his last days. Dorothy, and her good friend and companion, Gina, along with Dorothy's fourteen year old granddaughter, Juliet, took the flight, looking forward to a few days in the sunshine, in the luxury villa Rupert called home. When actress, Florence Quinn, also joined them at the villa, Dorothy was at first, put out. But soon the three women became friends. And Juliet was in her element with her art and the beauty surrounding them.
When Florence revealed her reason for being on Corfu, Dorothy and Gina joined together to help her. But it was obvious to them all that Florence wasn't telling them everything. Could what happened in the past, have any reference to the current day? Would Florence find what she needed? And while Rupert was enjoying the company of everyone, especially Dorothy, it was clear that he was declining...
The Old Girls' Island Getaway is another laugh out loud, lots of fun story of almost ninety year old Dorothy, and her good friend, almost divorced seventy one year old Gina by Kate Galley. It's the 3rd in the Old Girls series, and I've read - and loved - them all! Great characters, a wonderful setting and an intriguing storyline. Highly recommended.
With thanks to NetGalley & Boldwood Books for my digital ARC to read and review.
What started as a job of companion to Dorothy, Gina has been on many adventures with the nonagenarian. They are now friends and Dorothy has helped Gina shed her old life and embrace her new one. The two, with Dorothy’s granddaughter, are off to Corfu to visit an old and infirm friend who wants to reconnect with Dorothy before it is too late. The villa where they are staying is breathtaking and the three are poised to enjoy all the island has to offer.
A wild card joins them in the form of a movie star, Florence, who has two reasons for wanting to hide away at Rupert’s villa. Her husband is about to blow up their marriage in a spectacular way and she wants some distance from the media. The second is she wants to find the love of her life with whom she spent on idyllic summer when she was 18. The summer was not perfect. In fact, her beloved father died in a drowning accident but now that her marriage is over, Florence feels she has unfinished business with Andreas. Everyone decides to help out and search for the man. But Gina suspects there might be something more that they are not being told.
There is also a pesky reporter who has been dogging Rupert. He believes the elderly jeweller is a criminal mastermind who stole a rare treasure. The stories weave in and out and together as well as the story of friendship and the beginning and ending of relationships. As with all the old girls books, I get totally engrossed in the stories and just love the adventures. I feel very lucky to be invited to go along. These old girls know how to live.
The Old Girls’ Island Getaway is exactly the kind of book that lifts your spirits from the very first chapter. Kate Galley has such a knack for writing older characters with heart, humour, and a spark of mischief, and Dorothy and Gina are an absolute delight to spend time with.
Their friendship is the beating heart of the story—warm, loyal, and full of the kind of gentle teasing that only decades of shared history can create. Watching the two of them head off to Corfu together feels like being invited along on a holiday you didn’t realise you desperately needed. Sunshine, sea breezes, a little ouzo… it’s all wonderfully escapist.
The arrival of glamorous Florence Quinn adds a fun twist, and the mystery surrounding her past gives the story a lovely thread of intrigue without ever losing its feel‑good charm. The trio’s adventures across the island are full of surprises, laughter, and just the right amount of chaos.
What I loved most is how the book celebrates friendship, second chances, and the joy of saying yes to life—no matter your age. It’s warm, witty, and full of heart, with Corfu providing the perfect sun‑soaked backdrop.
A charming, uplifting read that left me smiling. Perfect for anyone who enjoys stories about strong women, unexpected adventures, and friendships that only get better with time.
With thanks to Kate Galley, the publisher and netgalley for the ARC

Although there were some serious issues in this story, it's also quite a fun read. I loved Dorothy and Gina, they didn't let their aches and pains get in their way. when Dorothy gets an invitation to visit her old friend Rupert in Corfu, she persuades Gina to go with her, and they take Dorothy's teenage granddaughter with them. There were a few other guests at Rupert's estate, including actress Florence Quinn. Florence tells them she has another reason for visiting the island. This is a story of friendship and second chances.

My Opinion
The Old Girls’ Island Getaway is the third book in the delightful Old Girls series, but I feel that it can be read as a standalone. With some lovely characters this was an enjoyable read. A quick and easy read. Another heart-warming novel by Kate Galley.
Dorothy is nearly 90, but not letting life slow down, although she now has a companion, Gina, to help her along. Not that Gina is a spring chicken at 71. Dorothy gets a letter from an old friend, Rupert, who is clearly reaching the end and wants to see her, so they both jet off to Corfu to his beautiful island home, accompanied by Dorothy's annoying and precocious 14 year old (going on 28) grand daughter.
The party is soon joined by a 'famous' actress, Florence, on the run as her husband is about to announce the end of their marriage and she somehow believes the world will be interested.
So we have a mix of characters, and it makes for an interesting tale as they each enjoy their holiday and join in (a la famous five) to help Florence with a quest.
The story is entertaining on a superficial level, if a bit far fetched in parts. I haven't read the other books in the series, but this one stands alone quite well. I think I expected more 'old girls behaving badly' sort of scenarios, but its a pleasant read.
Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for allowing me access to the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. A big thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the ARC!
This was such a multi-layered story. While the primary heart of the book is the connection between the characters, there is a great mix of intrigue and drama thrown in to keep things interesting. The plot dives deep into both the past and the present, exploring the different expectations we face at various stages of life.
It took me a little while to truly sink into the story, as the beginning felt a bit slow. However, once it got moving, it transitioned beautifully! The characters are incredibly likable—even the one who seemed a bit shady when we first met them. Despite some leisurely detours for "fun and frolic," the story moves ahead nicely. Every single character was endearing and a total joy to spend time with.

I enjoyed this quirky fun read about two elderly ladies, Dorothy, Gina and their teenage granddaughter, Julia, who go on holiday to Corfu to stay with Dorothy’s old friend, Rupert who is very unwell. Whilst there they meet Actress, Florence who is searching the island for her long lost love whilst hiding from the press due to an imminent separation from her politician husband. As the three help Florence search for Andreas they form a firm friendship. This was a fairly lighthearted book about how one can have an adventure, even in later life. To be honest not a lot really happens- it’s just a gentle story about a search which serves to bring together the main protagonists. There were a few twists towards the end of the book and I would say it held my attention sufficiently to make me turn the pages although for a quick reader like me it did take rather a while for me to finish . I didn’t realise it was part of a series and I would expect that it would be even more enjoyable if you had read the previous books. Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for my advance copy.
We're back with the joyful 'Old Girls,' Gina and Dorothy as they jet off for yet another holiday, in the company of Dorothy's granddaughter. This time, there's a film star in their midst, threatening to disturb what Dorothy had hoped would be a reunion with a friend at the end of his life. But there are two minor mysteries for our 'Old Girls' and Dorothy's granddaughter to solve - did Rupert play a part in stealing the priceless diamond decades ago - and why is Florence so determined on finding her holiday romance from thirty years ago?
These two mysteries provide the intrigue for the story as Gina is prevailed upon to drive a car around the twisty roads of Corfu and even hops onto a scooter, all in order to aid Florence. Juliet, Dorothy's granddaughter, provides a welcome boost of humour with her cutting, if mostly true, comments.
As with the previous two books in the series, The Old Girls' Island Getaway is a charming read, with some funny moments thrown in to remind us all that life doesn't stop just because the birthdays start to rack up.
This time Dorothy has been invited to Corfu to stay with an ailing old friend at his villa. She takes her friend / companion plus her teenage granddaughter with her to enjoy the sunshine. They are unexpectedly joined by Florence, a famous actress who is going into hiding after a revelation at home but is also looking for an old flame from years before on the island. This is part of a series, but can readily be read as a standalone book. As ever it's great to read stories set around people of my age group, but with a teenager added to keep things fresh, although things are never boring with Dorothy and Gina around. The location does sound lovely, especially the villa that they're staying in. We see a human side to a famous person whilst she searches for someone from her past but all the time trying to avoid public gaze. A fun read, with some touching moments, well worth a read. I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley, however this did not influence my review of the book
Gina, a seventy one year old woman, takes care of Dorothy who is ninety. Their friendship has developed into a sisterhood full of kindness and genuine respect for each other. When Rupert, Dorothy's friend, invites them to his estate in Corfu, they all agree to go. Even Dorothy's granddaughter decides to tag along. When they arrive they are taken by the beauty of the villa. There is also an actress, Florence, who is hiding out in the village due to a scandal. As new friends and old friends unite, intrigue and drama seem to also join them.
What a fun and twisty summer read. I am a fan of Kate Galley and this series. I always end up having so much fun with the story and feel like I just tag along with the characters. Loved Dorothy and Gina though Dorothy's granddaughter gave some funny and eye rolling moments. Florence's character really brought the fun, secrets and intrigue. Most of the characters were delightful and they brought their own charm and added something special to the group dynamic. Thank you Netgalley and Boldwood Books for this eARC. All opinions are entirely my own.
After reading the previous exploits of the Old Gals, I was excited to get back to Dorothy and Gina's world, because they do find themselves in some interesting scrapes, proving that there is no age limit for fun, frolics and friendships! This time, Dorothy takes Gina to Corfu at the request of one of her old friends, who lives there, and also her teenage granddaughter, Juliet. Florence, who is an actress, joins them out there, caught up in a bit of a scandal of her own. The description of the scenery is fab and made me want to go there, even with all the steps you have to climb to get back up to where you started! And the story itself is pure genius, when there are hidden agendas, teenage hormones, and some oldies who are up for adventure, no matter what it entails. I won't lie, there are a couple of sad bits, which reflect life, but there is plenty of light-heartedness, and definitely scope for more adventures, nearly 90-year-old Dotty definitely has it in her!
Hugely enjoyable caper with multi generational characters all on the beautiful Greek island of Corfu. Touching, sensitive, adventurous and fun! Dorothy is nearing her 90th birthday and with her dear friend and companion Gina, and is off to visit her old friend of many years on the island of Corfu. Rupert hasn’t recovered from losing his wife the love of his life, and knows his health is failing and he hasn’t got long. The group is expanded when Dorothy’s 14 year old granddaughter Juliet joins their trip at the last minute, and a very glamorous actress Florence is invited to stay in the pool house. Lots of unexpected twists and turns in this tale, just when you think you know where it’s heading there’s a secret or surprise unearthed. Beautifully written, warm wonderful and enticing into another world. Love these authentic characters, and their interactions. A fabulous escape to Corfu! Thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood books for the early read.
Dorothy is approaching 90 years old and she is watching her 14 year old granddaughter Juliet while her parents try to reconnect. A very dear acquaintance Rupert has asked her to come see him as he was not doing well. Gina is Dorothy companion for a lot of her outings and they have become very close. Gina’s ex-husband only wants Gina when he can’t find someone else. So Dorothy, Juliet and Gina take off to Rupert’s villa after arriving they are told Florence who is a movie star will be staying there as well. Florence’s husband as some unsettling news he is about to break to the public and Florence didn’t want to deal with all the publicity. Another reason Florence is at the villa she is looking for an old acquaintance. The girls learning to drive the scooters and the capers they get themselves into is hilarious.
I received this ARC from Netgalley for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I admit that the writing was lovely, as were the descriptions of the Island of Corfu, the houses, the food, wine, etc. The camaraderie between the differing generations was somewhat different from what I expected, but it was good enough.
What I hated was that this was such a slow read for me (it took me 3 days of reading what should have only have taken me several hours) it didn't hold my attention at all, and as for the mystery/s...yes, there was one but you don't actually get to it until you've reached about 83% of the book.
There was a very interesting twist in the very last chapter. I can't be positive that I will be reading the next book; however, my curiosity about what will happen to Dorothy, Juliet and Gina may just get the better of me!
*ARC was supplied by the publisher Boldwood Books, the authorm, and NetGalley.
Gina and her friend Dorothy are invited to go to Corfu to see an old friend of Dorothy's who is not well. After a small complication in that they need to take Dorothy's granddaughter, Juliet, they get there in one piece. It is obvious that Rupert is on his last legs and they try to make the best of what time they have. They are joined by film star Florence Quinn whose politician husband is just about to go public with a secret. They are bothered in the villa by a local journalist Thanos, whose father has convinced him that Rupert was responsible for the theft of "The Star of Athens" diamond many years before. Something that Rupert strenuously denies. They find out that Florence wants to track down an old flame and they join her on her mission with surprising results. A tale of friendship and heartache.
Sometimes what we only need is a good old friend, a sunny beach and the perfect cocktail. This adventure takes gal pals Gina and Dorothy to the greek island of Corfu, they go to visit Dorothy’s friend Rupert. Eight months ago, Douglas, Gina’s husband, left her and pushed the sale of their house, so she moved to Dorothy’s boathouse at the end of her garden on the banks of the River Thames in Hampton. Along comed Juliet, Dorothy’s granddaughter who is a feisty teenager. This adventure comes with an additional unexpected guest: Florence an actress with a secret. I love the connection the women have despite the age difference. The younger one gives a different point of view of every situation that is so fresh and breezy that it sounds untraditional. I would like to read further into their lives, they always seem to enjoy to the fullest.
I received an eARC of this book from NetGalley and the publisher, for which I thank them.
“The Old Girls’ Island Getaway” is by Kate Galley. What I liked about this book were the wonderful descriptions of Corfu - it was a great armchair trip! I also liked the friendship between the women and the generational friendship as well. I did find the pacing really slow - and especially at the beginning I felt like I was missing some background information (there were a number of names thrown about). I did like the idea of the women Corfu - why not? Grab the opportunity! The main mystery doesn’t appear until late in the book. I think that the writing was well done, but it didn’t always grab me like I hoped it would.
The Old Girls Island Getaway was an absolute joy to read. The story revolves around the nearly 90 year old Dorothy and her younger friend of 70, Gina. When Dorothy receives a letter from her good friend Rupert, inviting her to stay at his villa in Corfu. She jumps at the chance and takes along her young granddaughter Juliet and of course Gina. When an unexpected guest shows up then the fun and adventure begins . What follows is a story of friendship, laughter and tears along the way. The setting of Corfu was so lovely and really makes me want to visit there sometime. I loved the fact this book revolves around more mature women and it shows that you don’t have to be a young woman to have fun and enjoy life. This is the third book in the Old Girls series but it can 100% be read as a standalone.
