Being a secret agent is hard when you’re terrible at secrets and prone to distraction.
Jas’s first mission is simple: land on Earth and impersonate a local named Travis Lock to gather intel on Travis’s mysterious aunt Evelyn. Within hours, he’s crashed his mother’s runabout into the ocean, transformed into a talking pug, witnessed a murder, and accidentally caught feelings for the very guy he’s supposed to manipulate.
Travis is having the week from hell. Someone’s been killed and the police think he did it, plus there’s a telepathic dog claiming to be an alien who knows that Travis’s supposedly dead mother is actually alive—and in danger. Oh, and the dog wants to be besties.
But that’s just the beginning, as Jas learns the true nature of the organization he was raised to serve—SKYN is harvesting human bodies and repurposing them for profit.
When SKYN’s internal power struggle spills onto Earth, Jas and Travis become pawns in a war between executives who will burn entire planets to protect their secrets.
Forced together by circumstance and betrayal, the pair (Jas is a boy again—don’t panic) form an unlikely friendship that quickly becomes something more. Together, they uncover the truth about Evelyn Lock’s abduction—one that will reshape everything they thought they knew about family, trust, and what can be achieved with a wedge of cheese.
Because some bonds transcend origins. Some romances rewrite destiny. And some secrets are worth crossing galaxies to unveil.
An intergalactic joyride that is hilarious, exhilarating, and utterly unpredictable, SPACED is a genre-bending space opera about found family, dark secrets, and unlikely romance.
Tim Owen writes character-driven fiction with sharp humour and emotional depth. His stories explore messy people making imperfect decisions, unexpected friendships, and the fine line between control and chaos.
He is the author of Spaced, a quirky science-fiction adventure that blends humour, suspense, and found family. Whether writing contemporary drama or speculative fiction, Tim focuses on voice, pace, and characters who feel real—even when their circumstances aren’t.
Based in New Zealand, he spends most of his time writing, revising, and trying to keep his characters from going off script.
This was a creative sci-fi story that focused on relationships, compassion, and sacrifice. There were several sweet and emotional moments throughout that really stood out, especially in how the characters connected and supported each other.
For me, the hardest part was getting started. The writing style, for me, took some adjusting, and it took a while before I fully connected with the characters. However, once the story actually picked up, I appreciated the direction it went and the heart behind it.
Overall, this book offers an imaginative storyline with meaningful themes. While it wasn’t entirely my usual type of read, I’m glad I gave it a chance and think fans of lighter sci-fi, with emotional elements, will enjoy it.
This was a delightfully funny read that genuinely made me laugh out loud multiple times. I found the characters all wonderful, the writing managed to turn what is a dark concept at it's core with the whole business of SKYN into a fun romp that excited me to read.
Definitely recommend if you're looking for some lighthearted scifi with queer romance and interesting characters.
Many thanks to Timothy Owen for the advanced copy this was a read that brang me a lot of joy and I look forward to seeing what happens next!
Disclaimer: Timothy Owen founded the North Shore Writers Group, of which I am a member. It has been a real privilege to hear sections of Spaced read aloud as the story developed.
Spaced is a genuinely hilarious, fast-paced science fiction novel that does not take itself too seriously, yet still delivers a compelling and engaging story. The premise alone is wonderfully chaotic. And the execution lives up to it.
What makes this novel stand out is its characters. Jas and Travis are not heroic in any conventional sense. They are distracted and flawed. Often they are completely out of their depth. Yet it is precisely these imperfections that make them so relatable and endearing. Their survival feels like a series of improbable, often comedic, decisions that somehow work out. For sure not destiny. It’s not so much that the characters are acting without thinking, but rather overthinking and fumbling their way forward. I’m sure most readers will be able to relate with that.
I particularly enjoyed the clever play with language in distinguishing between worlds, especially the contrast between Earth and O’en, Jas’s home planet. It adds a subtle layer of wit and identity to the narrative, and feels like a thoughtful nod from the author.
The humour runs throughout the novel, balancing moments of tension with absurdity in a way that keeps the narrative lively. Even as the stakes escalate, the tone remains accessible and entertaining.
There is also an undercurrent of ethical reflection woven into the story. Knowing Tim’s broader perspectives, I could not help but notice hints of a critique around the idea of “humane” systems of slaughter. This dimension adds depth without detracting from the novel’s humour and pace.
There is also a thread of romance, but it is handled lightly. Rather than becoming overly intense, it adds warmth and charm to the story, complementing the broader themes of friendship and family connection.
Overall, Spaced is an enjoyable and unpredictable read. It will particularly appeal to readers who appreciate character-driven science fiction with humour and much heart.
This book lands well with readers who enjoy fast-paced and clever science fiction. The narrative has a vibrant energy that keeps the momentum going from the very first page. I must say that you have a talent for creating a world that is expansive yet easy to navigate, which is a difficult balance to strike in this genre.
The character development is particularly impressive. The way the core group evolves over the course of the story feels very authentic. They start as individuals with their own distinct motivations and slowly transform into a cohesive team, and watching those relationships click into place is one of the most rewarding aspects of the manuscript. The dialogue is sharp and helps to establish the unique voices of the cast without the need for heavy exposition.
The world-building is, I would say, another strong point. The author manages to introduce complex concepts and futuristic technology in a way that feels natural to the story. By weaving these details into the action, the setting feels lived in and real. The inclusion of corporate and bureaucratic elements adds a layer of relatability that grounds the more imaginative parts of the plot, making the stakes feel personal and urgent.
Regarding the flow of the story, the transitions between different perspectives are handled with a lot of skill. This approach keeps the tension high and ensures that the reader is always engaged with the broader conflict. There is a great mix of high-stakes action and quieter, more reflective moments that allow the characters to breathe. This variety in pacing prevents the story from feeling repetitive and keeps the reader curious about what happens next.
For anyone looking for a modern and engaging science fiction adventure, this manuscript delivers. It is a polished and imaginative piece of work that clearly knows its audience. The conclusion is especially effective, as it brings the emotional arcs to a satisfying close, yet leaves plenty of room for future possibilities in this universe. It has been a pleasure to read a story with such a strong sense of personality and drive.
If you enjoy quirky sci-fi with humor and heart, Spaced is likely right up your alley. It has a similar offbeat charm to the TV show Resident Alien. The tone is fun, funny, and often irreverent.
The story begins in New Zealand and gradually expands far beyond where you expect it to go. Along the way, the journey of the two main protagonists has the kind of chaotic buddy adventure energy you might recognize from Dumb and Dumber, but their bond deepens in meaningful ways as the story unfolds.
One of the strengths of the book is the use of multiple points of view. The shifting perspectives give the characters more depth and help reveal motivations and emotions as the adventure develops. There were a few brief moments where the narration slipped into omniscient territory, which felt slightly different from the rest of the book’s style, but those moments were rare and easy to move past.
Overall, Spaced delivers a fun adventure with humor, heart, and a journey that keeps expanding in unexpected directions.
I first went into this book not expecting much from it, the start was a little confusing to follow but as you read on the more you understand the setting and follow how the story is going. Once I was in the book I found it hard to put down for the night.
This Sci-Fi book had me hooked as it is set in a fictional town in my own country New Zealand. The characters in the book are humorous, seeing how extraterrestrial life and “eathers” come together to solve a strange but very intriguing mystery, and watching it unfold kept me fully engaged.
I really enjoyed reading this book because it was an easy to read book for someone like me who isn’t the best at reading. I would love to see a sequel in the future. It’s an engaging and enjoyable read that I’d definitely recommend to my family and friends.
While this book isn’t my usual read, I found it charming and refreshing!
I was unsure of the multiple points of view initially but once the book gets rolling it became a strength that I was happy was there, giving more insight to each character.
The story is fun and light while also having a lot of heart. It’s got its own quirky unique humour and I enjoyed how our main characters came together as a team.
I liked the level of world building, it felt accessible and gave you everything you needed without getting bogged down, making for an easy read.
Really enjoyed the emotional relationship arcs throughout too!
This was a fun book to read. While it is science fiction and includes aliens with innovations way ahead of anything we have on earth, the science and technology are the backdrop, the infrastructure, and not the focus. In my opinion, on one hand it's about family, friendships, and purpose, and on another hand (read the book and you'll understand why I didn't say the other hand) it's about power, greed, and taking advantage of others for personal gain. Serious topics, for sure, but the author has a knack for presenting heavy subjects in a humorous and lighthearted way. I enjoyed every minute and the ending sets up for a sequel, but it's not a cliffhanger.
A humorous Sci-Fi adventure which hooked me from the first page. The main characters, who begin as total strangers, soon find themselves in a situation where they need to rely on each other to achieve their goal. Snippets from their past come to the surface revealing a mystery. Family ties complicate things, and relationships develop and morph along the way, making the reader emotionally invested. The narrator skillfully navigates through multiple point of views, thus showing diverse insights and different perspectives of the story. This is a great book that I couldn’t put down.
Spaced is entertaining read with plenty of escapism to last for hours. Adventures, chaos and confusion abound. Goofy humor keeps things light and the reader laughing. Unexpected events and a creative storyline provides intrigue and momentum. The journey of these quirky characters put this story into the unusual and divine niche area of sci-fi, animals and shapeshifting, and gay romance. On top of all that, when else has a story in this genre also included the unique cultural aromas and flavors of Aotearao New Zealand? You are in for a treat.
At first, I found some of the earlier chapters slightly difficult to get into, but I am glad that I stuck with it and finished the novel. The balance of humour and storytelling really add to the immersion and there were times where I genuinely did not know what would happen next, which made the book difficult to put down once I got into the swing of it. Also being sci fi and based in New Zealand always is a plus Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this.
I have to say that this book gives vibes of Douglas Adams and the Hitchhikers series. Bloody hilarious at points, made me laugh out loud and with a three arm alien that can shapeshift, what more could you want?
The book was easy to read and kept my interest throughout. I can highly recommend reading this book!
I really enjoyed this book. The flow was great, the protagonist’s were well written and you had a sense of being right there in the story which is always truly enjoyable. If you’re looking for a great author to follow Tim Owen is a great choice. There’s just so much I want to share about this novel but I do t want to give away the plots, just trust me, you will love it.
The book just wasn’t my vibe. It’s well written but lost me on things that just aren’t my style. The extra vowels in names were too Star Trekky for me 🤣 I was expecting Firefly-esq reading and I didn’t get it, so I may well have set myself up for disappointment.
this was a delightful, fun read! had me laughing from the beginning and was a great story that did well with the relationships and subject matter while keeping readers entertained! would recommend for anyone who is in a reading slump and needs something to brighten their day.
I absolutely LOVED this book. It was fun, humourous and well written. Storyline was fabulous and characters were really unique. Definitely recommended.
Took me awhile to get into this book with the style of writing, but once I did i found it hard to put down. Loved the story and character development. If you want an easy sci-fi with some humour and an interesting concept, I recommend Spaced :)
