What Remains Of Us: A Divided Kingdom Story

Rate this book
What happens after the world ends quietly?
Britain didn’t fall in a day.
It fractured, slowly & deliberately, then all at once.

As systems collapse and the country divides, one family is forced to confront what survival really means when there is no safety net left to fall back on. No authorities to trust. No guarantees that doing the right thing will keep anyone alive.

Set in a near-future Britain, based in Yorkshire on the edge of collapse, What Remains of Us is a character-driven dystopian novel about family, loyalty, and the cost of endurance when everything familiar has been stripped away.

This is not a story about heroes, it’s about ordinary people pushed beyond their limits.

As violence creeps closer and the line between protector and threat begins to blur, the question is no longer how to survive, but who you are willing to become in order to do so.

Quiet, tense, and emotionally grounded, What Remains of Us explores the aftermath of societal breakdown through the lens of family bonds, moral compromise, and the fragile hope that something human can survive even the end of the world.

Perfect for readers who enjoy:

Near-future dystopian fiction

Post-apocalyptic stories grounded in realism

British speculative fiction

Character-focused survival narratives

Quiet apocalypse novels with emotional depth

When everything is taken, what remains matters most.

Ever thought about what you would do if the world went to hell? If you woke up and
life as you knew it was a thing of the past? What's your plan? How would you survive? Who could you trust? Could you even trust those you thought were the closest to you? This novel had me thinking
all of that and more. What could you survive on for nourishment? I love to fucking eat
now. A good meal and some good juice makes my entire day special. It also gave
me a sense of dread. The imagery in Jack's writing is masterfully etched into every
scene. I felt like a member of the family. I felt every blow and triumph. I'm a big movie girly and reading this gave me a visual of movies like "The Road", "A Quiet Place" or " The Running Man". It
possessed my focus and kept me on edge. I couldn't put it down. I really enjoyed this
novel and hope to read more from Jack. This is the first novel for me and I'm happy
to support. It is a story that lingers long after the last page.

This a beautifully written book about a family trying to survive a dystopian future. Excellent writing, dark and powerful. The plot moves along well, and is interesting. I am not sure if I like the main character. At points, I did, and at other times not so much. Good dystopian read! Would recommend!

I struggled through this and was quite disappointed overall. I enjoy a bit of dystopian fiction and living in the DN area was really looking forward to this one.
I didn’t really like any of the characters, the kids had been in a bunker for 14 years but then the daughter has the strongest survival skills when captured and is able to knock out/kill a guard.
Jarrod was just generally unlikeable, I didn’t feel like he was very interesting.
Jane we are introduced to in the first few pages and one of the key parts about her is how long her hair is in relation to her breasts. Again just not an interesting character.
I didn’t care about Danny, at all. Felt nothing when he died though it felt like I was meant to.
Quite a few inconsistencies that bothered me like Jarrod remarking on how much weight he’d lost but then finding a photo where he looked slimmer, his wife seeming to know about the bunker when he’d been taken there without her and Danny being shot before they crossed the bridge but then Jarrod stopping at the middle of the bridge where he was killed on the way back?
The development of the characters was clunky and I just didn’t buy that they were wielding weapons by the end.
The whole casino boss as the villain arc was just a bit weird and made no sense and where did he get grapes from in a nuclear apocalypse?
Also bothered me that there isn’t a Morrisons or Aldi in Cleethorpes me the hospital is in Grimsby but maybe I’m just being a twat.
I’ve given 2 stars because I liked the beginning of the story and the bit with the music in the car they found was enjoyable and I appreciate this is the authors first full length story. I feel he is capable of crafting a good piece of fiction but for me this wasn’t it.

Jack Hargreaves did an amazing job balancing action, emotion, and mystery while exploring loyalty, loss, and survival in a divided world. The character development was especially powerful, and the writing kept me fully invested from beginning to end.
