ARC REVIEW
Well Layla did it again, dragged me into a world I don’t want to leave.
Charlee is your not so stereotypical rockstar and his deadly muse Sera will have you gripped to see how their story unfolds. The character growth and level of self reflection from the MMC, coupled with an understanding FMC who won’t take his sh*t is top tier.
Cannot wait to see what the rest of the trilogy brings!

I have the pleasure of receiving this as an e-ARC and voluntarily will be giving my honest review. This was the first time read this Author and a Rock Star Romance book!! I have to say she did not disappoint!! I definitely can’t wait for the rest of the trilogy to come out!! This was a must read!!

I went into Distorted Horizons expecting a certain kind of MMC… and Charley completely flipped that expectation on its head.
He’s not your typical dominant, untouchable male lead. There’s a quiet intensity to him—something deeper, more human. He feels things. He hesitates. He cares in a way that isn’t loud or possessive, but steady and real. And honestly? That made him hit so much harder for me.
Charley’s strength isn’t just in what he does—it’s in what he holds back, what he protects, and how he shows up when it matters. That kind of emotional depth made me connect to him in a way I didn’t expect.
If you’re tired of copy-paste MMCs and want someone who feels layered, raw, and different… Charley is it.

Before I give my opinion, I should probably forewarn that romance isn’t my usual genre, so there may be instances where I miss the point entirely, or can look at aspects with a fresh pair of eyes. Whether that legitimises or delegitimises my arguments is up to you.
One of the things I did really enjoy was the characterisation of Charlee and his anxiety. I loved seeing the tells that were shown to us cleverly through dialogue and exchanges, some of which made me laugh (including a certain reference to an infamous fanfiction). L.R. Douglas wasn’t afraid to make him flawed with his struggles either, which made him feel like a real person.
I also like the fact that other flaws existed with Sera as well, including the fact that she is curvier and has parts of herself she doesn’t like, and I did ultimately enjoy how the two were able to bond through music. The story also consists of a lot of spice between the two that could be written very sweetly at times, with a lot of emphasis surrounding consent and anxiety. One of their more earnest scenes also has one of my favourite lines from the whole book: “Let me be your collateral”.
I also loved the addition of the musical lyrics throughout - this had the effect of reinforcing various themes and emotions in stylistic, lyrical methods. It was fun to read them and put your own melodic twist onto them, like you were contributing to the band’s own music.
The story also has a lot of moments that will make you laugh, with fun side characters and a lot of British style banter that makes me, a British person, feel right at home. A huge shoutout goes to Luke here for the honour of being a particularly fun source of comic relief!
For the negative aspects, the characterisation of Charlee presents a double edged sword in the fact that his behaviour sometimes made it hard to root for the couple to be together. While I don’t doubt that he cares for Sera, I found his impulsive behaviour lacking in consideration for her and her circumstances. Multiple times throughout, she expresses discomfort with her own boundaries and him not understanding that her financial situation, as well as the power imbalance between them, plays a huge role in her hesitation. I wouldn’t have so much of a problem with this if I felt that these aspects were addressed more and that Charlee actually learned that sometimes there needs to be room for understanding and boundaries for those exact reasons. But that may be where my lack of knowledge in the romance genre comes into play and I may expect too much realism.
On another personal preference front, I do wish, especially at the beginning, there had been more focus on the human and musical connection between the two that weren’t so closely tied to lust and sex. I did feel that it took up the majority of their development and while its overall existence makes sense, I wish those more human parts held more significance. More scenes of them just talking without sexual references would have allowed me to feel closer to them.
On a nit-pickier level, while I quite enjoyed the writing for the most part, I did find that there was an overuse of the word “fuck” and its derivatives throughout Charlee’s chapters. While I understand that this can be character forming and people can be allowed to swear, there were times it felt like every other word, including counting four instances in one single paragraph. It had the effect of taking me out of the story at times to count the fuck’s and I did feel the narrative would improve if these were limited slightly.
Overall, this was a book with a lot of things to enjoy and some areas that could have been better for me. For readers who enjoy a relaxing romance with lots of spice and comic relief, as well as the chance to visualise becoming a mega rock star, this will be right up your alley, and I can see many existing romance fans being huge fans of this book and the upcoming series!

easy to read, sometimes harder to connect for me..but still worth it💙
I received an ARC of *Distorted Horizon* by L.R. Douglas, and overall this was a story I’m glad I experienced even if it didn’t fully click for me the whole time.
The book follows a famous singer who meets an unknown girl with a powerful voice of her own. What starts as a simple connection slowly grows into something deeper, while both characters navigate their own personal struggles, identity, and the pressures that come with being seen both online and in real life.
From the start, the writing style is very accessible. It’s the kind of book you can easily sink into, and I was pulled in quickly by the concept alone. Music plays a big role in the story, which added an extra layer I really enjoyed!
At the same time, I did struggle at moments to fully connect with the characters. They are quite young and go through a lot emotionally, which made the story feel realistic but also meant I sometimes had to push myself to keep reading. Not everything hit as deeply for me as I hoped.
That said, I really appreciated the themes the author explored. ♥️
The inclusion of online hate, social media pressure, and the mental impact of being in the spotlight made the story feel very current and relevant. It added depth beyond just the romance and character dynamics.
And I have to say… Sera’s sexual confidence was such a highlight for me. It felt refreshing and empowering, and it’s something I don’t see explored like this very often.
Overall, *Distorted Horizon* is a story with strong ideas, a lot of emotional depth, and a refreshing willingness to do things a bit differently even if it didn’t fully land for me at all times.

I am a first time reader of L.R. Douglas and am not normally a rockstar romance kind of gal, but am a fan of both after reading this book.
Charlee is the lead singer of a British rock band, whom I could tell almost instantly is on the spectrum. His mannerisms and sensory issues were subtle giveaways. But I have to say I loved his character and how he was portrayed. Raising a child with very similar issues, the nuances of a neurodivergent brain were spot on and that really drew me into his character. He is a brilliant musician who has difficulty connecting with people emotionally and physically. A chance late night visit to a bar near their concert venue, gives him an opportunity to hear Sera, with her sweet sultry voice sing one of the band's songs. He is instantly drawn to her like a moth to a flame. Her voice resonates deeply within him and he feels things as he never has before. A true connection.
Sera, a down on her luck musician, is a huge fan of New Horizons and of Blu. So meeting him the way she does is like a dream come true. Then spending time with him and getting to know him on a deeper level has her seeing there is so much more to him than anyone knows. And she likes it. A lot. She becomes the calm in his storm, the balm to his soul. It is beautiful and inspiring.
I loved how this was not "Americanized" and the slang, spelling, and vocabulary was purposely kept very British. It felt more authentic. The characters felt human and real and the plot flowed so well I finished this within hours. I found myself fully immersed in this story.
This was a surprising and emotional read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

This was quite the whirlwind.
What brings this book up for me is the banter level. Between charlee and sera. Between the boys in the band. Charlee and the security guy (Dean we love you). I laughed out loud several times.
I also think that L.R. captured anxiety very well. As someone who has struggled with it for years but works in a very intense public facing job you do develop a mask and it is incredibly taxing on your mental health.
Is it a little instalovey? Yes. But in a way that I feel echoes those romance movies where the couple is just so obsessed with each other that it works. Charlee and sera connect on a level via music that I imagine few other people will ever understand.
I also kind of love that it's him who falls so hard and fast while she is a little more practical about it. But I did find on occasion that we were on the edge of him feeling pushy, especially around travel. But this is addressed towards the end of the book in a way shows they are aware of this.
Also smut. There is a lot of it, these two have a bad case of the horn for one another. I love that sera is so sexually confident, you get that D girl.

This book really hooked me with its humor and character dynamics. The banter is easily one of the strongest parts, the dialogue feels natural and often genuinely funny. It added a lightness that balanced out some of the heavier themes.
One of those heavier elements is anxiety, which I think L.R. portrayed in a very authentic way. The idea of putting on a polished, “everything’s good” front while struggling internally especially in a as a rockstar was handled tastefully throughout the book.
The romance is more of an insta-love relationship. Their connection through music gives their relationship a sense of depth that makes the fast emotional attachment more believable. There are moments where his intensity borders on being a little too much and I cringed internally, particularly when it comes to big decisions, but the author does address this.
The spice is spicey. Sera’s confidence in her sexuality stood out and added another layer to her personality, which I appreciated. Charlee's lack of experience because of the way he views sex is an interesting take. I like that it was less about her looks and more about her as a person.
Overall, this was an entertaining read with a good mix of humor, emotion, and romance. I'm excited to read the next book in the series.

Distorted Horizon is a really interesting read that pulls you in pretty quickly. The world feels a bit strange and unusual but in a good way, and that idea of a “distorted horizon” kind of sticks with you as you go.
The atmosphere is probably the best part in my opinion. There’s this constant sense that something isn’t quite right, which keeps things engaging. The writing is descriptive, but not so heavy that it slows everything down too much. It’s easy to picture what’s going on without getting lost in it.
The main character is solid and easy to connect with, especially when they’re dealing with confusion and trying to figure things out. Some of the side characters don’t get as much depth, but they still add to the story.
That said, the middle of the book did drag a little for me, and there are a few moments where things feel a bit unclear or underexplained. There are big ideas, which is cool, but sometimes I just wanted a bit more clarity.
I personally loved a part of the dedication, it just made the book a little more special.
Overall though, it’s a strong read and definitely worth it if you like stories that make you think a bit. It completely sticks with you after you finish.

the first thing that came into my head was "A star is born". it has that kind of vibe. Local girlie sings covers in a local bar, rock star Blu walks in and falls in love with her voice and, in turn, her.
I really enjoyed Sera living the whirlwind that was her relationship with Charlee (Blu) and enjoyed seeing Charlee come out of his shell and explore a side to him he hasn't before. Is he dramatic and does he expect everyone to just pander to him? yes, he's a bit of a spoilt rock star. But are there moments where he realises he's probably not acting right? also yes. I enjoyed seeing him find himself in a different way and ultimately making sure Sera got some confidence too.
Sera already had some confidence. she was bold, and asked for what she wanted but she put Charlee in his place when she needed to, occasionally letting her heart lead her instead of her head.
I thoroughly enjoyed this read, and would recommend if you want an easy read with characters that'll make you smile, face palm and cry a little bit too.

Rockstar Romance
Charliee is the lead singer and guitarist for a British rock band, he's super talented, mega hot and neurodivergent. Shout out to Layla for her amazing writing on portraying Charliee's struggles, obsessive hyper fixations and everything in between. His character was beautifully written and his character development was out of this world!
Sera is an American girl with a dream of making it big, where she performs at an open mic night, where Charliee stumbles into the bar while on tour in America.
It's an instant obsession between them both. Charliee's is driven by a need more powerful than lust, it's powered by music.
This story is filled with so much love, angst, longing and obsession.
I enjoyed following these two along so much, and I cannot wait to read the other two books in the series that is due out this year

The chemistry between Blu & Serafina was electric! The discovery and learning from them both is so educational and endearing. It's a beautiful story with twists and turns throughout. Keep rocking and I can't wait for the next one!

This was my first book by Layla and it was like no other book I have read! I absolutely loved it as it was so full of passion, emotion, sadness and action.
The book is based on Charlee who is the lead singer of a world famous band who comes across Sera at a open mic night in a small bar. Their connection from when they first met was soo connected especially from Charlee's end. This book was written so beautifully with the lead male character showing a lot of overthinking, emotion and was supported by Sera who was going through her own turmoil.
I couldn't put the book down and would have finished it within one day if it was the weekend! I now want to read the rest of Layla's books and cannot wait for the next book in the series.

This book was so much fun! If I wasn't giggling at the British slang and the hilarious interactions between the boys, I was swooning about Charlee being utterly head over heels in love with Sera. From the first chapter I was hooked and could not put it down.
Watching how hard and fast Charlee fell and how hard he was trying to understand himself and also explain it to Sera was so beautiful in the story and I was cheering for them from the start.
Even the non-main characters (they are far too larger than life to be called side characters) were amazing.
Everyone in the story felt real and like they were people you would expect to interact with in every day life. I cannot wait to see more of everyone in the next books and I adore the world that L.R. Douglas has created.

What a refreshing rock star romance! Sometimes I need a story that hooks me quickly, and this did exactly that without regurgitating the same playboy trope I tend to try to avoid these days. It had a breathless sort of insta-love intensity, particularly at the beginning before Sera's hesitation kicked in. I loved the representation of anxiety and neurodivergence in the MMC, Charlee, as well as the inclusion of lyrics so you see his creativity as an artist embodied. Some parts of the story I felt were unrealistic, but this is more of a rock star fantasy anyway. Also, I adored the cover; the guy vaguely reminded me of the Latin rock star, Gustavo Cerati. Of course, Charlee 'Blu' was described differently, but it drew me in instantly.

If you into music that is the book for you. Blue was not your typical rock star, he had really depth and was interested in her and not just her body, more like her music. I personally think, that she was more bold or more confident in what she wants from him. He was very innocent in a way. The scene in the hospital was not really believable, he is a rock star after all. he was a bit naïve for my taste, to be obsessed is one thing, but please have a backbone. I don't know, but if you are an award winning rock band, do you fly commercial and ride the tube? All in all it was a good story, but had its flaws.

Fantastic writing as always from Layla, her ability to weave trauma, neurodiversity, complex feelings and emotions, romance and classic British humour together is amazing. I think this may be the first book I’ve read with Ace Rep and it felt deep and authentically written.
This book took me on such a rollercoaster of emotions that it’s genuinely taken me a few days to gather all my thoughts together to write the review. Both Charlee and Sera are flawed in their own ways but vulnerable and willing to work on themselves for each over. The spice was top tier and I am still giggling and all the use of the British slang.

Right off the bat I knew the writing might not be for me seemed very immature almost. There is a line when you write rockstar Romances if they get with a diehard fan that it can get icky. It happens quickly she knows everything about him and brings it up constantly. He has anxiety you can tell and does not get sexually excited more of an emotional response for him but not with her. So I tried to stick with it. The more I read I was just getting annoyed but when she makes him sing what he wants to do to her in phone sex video call I was out. IT WAS LIKE A WEIRD SMEX CAT IN THE HAT BECAUSE HE RHYMED. LOL It was something I could not come back from and push fwd. Lol

SOMETHING BLU!
A far cry from previous reads for L.R. Douglas and it was absolutely fantastic. This was not a normal contemporary rockstar romance, it was better. There was raw emotion between Charlee 'Blu' and Sera that had you completely involved in every aspect of their lives. The depth of connection between them was enticing but the music on the pages was what really drew me in. You could hear the harmonies, thrum of the guitar strings, and the vulnerability in the words. The friendship, banter and hilarity amongst the bandmates was perfect. L.R. Douglas's writing was perfect, with the switching between brit and american was phenomenal and props for staying true to the characters. This book for me was perfect.

Rockstar romances have never really interrupted me. But I saw this as an ARC and thought, why not. I can honestly say, this did not disappoint. I was so intrigued with the lifestyle and how hectic it was. Charlee and his wanting to but be so much in the spotlight. And when he heard Sera, Omgosh, my heart fluttered. The description of what Charlee heard was awesome. The story just took off and kept me in my seat turning the pages, wanting to see how things were going to develop. I absolutely loved this story. It was truly amazing. I hope to be able to read the rest.

Delayed update, but this is one of those situations where long distance makes the heart grow fonder and where each chance Blu and Sera have to spend time together brings them closer together in more ways than one. Despite the challenges Blu and Sera face throughout the book, the story shows how long distance relationships can succeed and how being discovered can change your life forever.
Highly recommend to readers who love it when the MMC is obsessed with the FMC. Sera is truly a muse for Blu and it pays off for her.

This is the first book I’ve read by L.R. Douglas and I can tell you it won’t be my last!
I really liked this story and the banter between all the characters had me laughing so much. This story feels more relatable than other rockstar romances because it leaves you feeling like this could happen to anyone; all you need are the right circumstances.

This is the first book I read by LR Douglas!!! Absolutely loved every second of it!!! Also a rockstar romance a genre I haven’t read a lot. But now a fan of. Story about Charlee a lead singer of a British rock band that meets Sera at an open mic night. Their story captivated me. Try this book out. You will love it!!!! I am looking forward to more books from Layla!!!

I went into reading this with no expectations. It was a book club book for April and I have to say I was hooked from the first page.
It’s rare that I’m hooked that quickly.
I absolutely love Charlee and his neuroduvergance (I am also), I love his development with Sera, they are literally perfect for each other.
