Rose never saw herself as being worth a duke’s attention. But the more time she spends with the Duke of Pembrooke, the more she starts to fall for the man behind the flirting and the title.
Bash never pursued a serious relationship with a woman. Now faced with the prospect of marriage, he realizes the idea of making Rose his duchess isn’t unpleasant at all.
(As someone who gets nervous performing music in front of others, my heart ached for what he went through as a child.)
They both want to avoid unwanted engagements and make it through this ruse with their hearts intact.
The blackmail plotline added just enough intrigue to keep things unpredictable. While I could sympathize with the blackmailer’s hurt feelings, stooping that low was too far.
I thought Juliana and Lucian had some great banter, but Bash and Rose may have surpassed them in that regard. Their back and forths were so entertaining!
However, sprinkled in with the banter were some wonderfully sincere moments between Bash and Rose which proved their ruse had become reality long before either of them realized it.

This is the second book in the series The Madcaps of Mayfair and just like the first book, this one did not disappoint.
If you like witty banter, an engagement ruse, captivating characters and adorable nicknames, this one is for you.
Miss Rose Astley and Sebastian, the Duke of Penrose, have been aquatinted with each other ever since Rose's sister Juliana recently married the Duke's close friend. After a mishap that involves a game of truth or dare and a rather unforgettable fall into the Duke's orangery, "Bash" cannot seem to get Rose out of his head. When Bash is unexpectedly confronted with an engagement to someone he does not want, he suddenly blurts out that he is already secretly engaged to none other than Miss Rose Astley. Reluctantly Rose agrees to the temporary ruse but never expected what was to come next....
I adored this sweet clean regency romance that supplied me with all the warm fuzzy feelings I could ask for. These characters will steal your heart just as they stole each others.

Oh my goodness the beginning of this book is such fun and it just continues to be great all the way to the end! I loved this story! It’s a fake engagement story, which is always fun to watch! I loved the flirting or “non flirting” between this couple. Rose and Sebastian “Bash” are just so cute and their chemistry is great. There is a blackmailer involved as well that adds a touch of mystery to the story! I loved the sibling interactions as well. Overall a great story and I recommend.

This is the third book in the Madcaps of Mayfair series. It can be read as a standalone, but is part of a series about the Astley sisters. In this book we get Rose's story.
The Duke of Pembroke "Sebastian/Bash" is cornered with an unwanted arrangement and announces a secret engagement to Rose, unbeknownst to her. They are friends, but vow not to fall in love. They start to grow closer as they spend more time with each other because of their ruse. I love the initial scene in the orangery, where this story truly begins. What a fun beginning to their friendship turned relationship.
I laughed out loud throughout this book. I have loved this entire series and this book is a new favorite. I love Bash and Rose and their friendship that quickly turns into a lot more. They set rules, but both of them start bending and breaking these rules, enjoying their connection to each other. The side characters, which have been in previous books, make some fun appearances. I really adore Berkeley and am glad we get some more of his story. I can't wait for the next book, and to hopefully get more on Ceci.

Book 3 in Angela E. Johnson’s Madcaps of Mayfair series, A Clever Ruse, swept me right into the Astley sisters’ wonderfully chaotic world, and I am still grinning. This is Rose Astley’s turn in the spotlight, and wow—what a ride. Rose is a multi-talented heroine: outspoken yet quiet, considerate yet daring, and just the right amount of mischievous. Her adventure kicks off when she boldly picks a “command” instead of a “question” at Miss Ellsworth’s tea party. Naturally, the command goes hilariously sideways, and she ends up in the orangery of Sebastian “Bash,” the Duke of Pembroke. Cue one very sweet, very eyebrow-raising encounter.
The fun really begins later during a ball at Pembroke’s home, where the Duke of Montague tries to foist his daughter, Lady Beatrice, on Bash. This is part of the Madcaps of Mayfair series that follow the Astley sisters. The books can be read as a standalone, but you'll want to read the full series as the characters do crossover and past events are mentioned. And because it's a great series.
In this book we get Rose and Sebastian's (Bash) story and it all starts in the orangery. When Bash is cornered by the Duke of Montague and presented with a marriage proposal to his daughter, Bash is quick to claim he is already secretly engaged. When they demand a name, Rose Astley is the name he gives. While he hopes to keep it a secret, the news spreads like wild fire. While they considered themselves friends, as they spend more time together to keep up the ruse, feelings start to be had - even though they both vowed to not fall in love.
I found myself chuckling through out the book. I enjoyed the exchanges between Rose and Bash and loved how their relationship progressed. I had to laugh that while they agreed upon some "rules," they both quickly started to break them. And honestly, the knuckle kisses in this book are just as tender as forehead kisses. **Sigh**
We also have some great side characters. I'm glad that we got more of Berkeley. Without saying much, but probably giving something away, we kind of get a two-for-one HEA in this book - which I was really excited for.
I'm looking forward to the next book to get Ceci's story and see if she ends up with Mr Wyatt.

I was delighted to read both the ebook and audiobook versions of this story by Angela E Johnson (narrated by Grace Noble). This series has been so fun and so funny. I think Angela may be the queen of the Regency romp!
This tale imagines what if a duke was backed into a corner after an unwanted marriage proposal and the first name on his lips was yours? Rose never thought she would be engaged to a duke- especially because she is nothing like her sister who already caught one. But literally falling into a duke's lap certainly leaves an impression!
There is a lot to love about this story because the relationships are written so well. The dynamics between Rose and her parents, Rose and her sisters and of course, Rose and Pembroke, are so layered, allowing the reader to question whether Rose and Pembroke can keep up the charade. There is so much on the line already, and then their entire plan is threatened to be exposed by someone with malevolent intentions, and we get to enjoy unraveling the mystery. Grace Noble did a wonderful job highlighting both the fun and the stress that Rose and Pembroke are under while allowing us to enjoy them falling in love with her lovely narration (available on YouTube!).
This was my favorite of the series so far, and the next installment was heavily teased in this one, so I am a committed reader for the rest of these stories following the Astley siblings to their happily ever afters!

-I found A Clever Ruse, to be such a fun, delightful, charming clean regency story. It is precisely and filled with such wonderful witty banter, a fake engagement, mystery, humor, and heart! I thoroughly enjoyed the engaging and likable characters, the every crazy but fun mishaps along the way, and watching a friendship blossom into something more along the way! Where pretending lines blur and the reality is even more lovely. I loved how the writing flowed and the attention to detail and imagery were weaved so wonderfully within that, I felt transported even more so into the pages of this story. I loved how enjoyable this story was. It was simply so fun and lighthearted, and made me continually laugh, shake my head at the antics, and smile so much. It was just what I needed after back to school shopping fun with all 3 of my cute bookworms for the day. This story really is delightful! I would say that it could also be read as a stand alone but, my goodness, it’s even better after reading this wonderful series in order! My Friends, this story is worth the charming fun read!🍊📚‼️

A Clever Ruse by Angela P. Johnson is the third book in the Madcaps of Mayfair series, which follows a group of sisters who seem to have a knack for finding love through the craziest of circumstances. This one genuinely cracked me up!
It all starts with a dare—something like a game of truth or dare—when Rose is challenged to climb a fence and steal an orange from the Duke’s orangery. She manages to get the orange, but she also takes a tumble and hurts herself. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately!), the Duke happens to be there and witnesses the whole thing.
When someone else sees them together, propriety demands a solution: Rose and the Duke must pretend to be engaged.
What follows is a wonderfully entertaining series of mishaps, misunderstandings, and general craziness as their fake engagement slowly turns into something very real. Of course, they eventually fall in love, but getting to their happily ever after is half the fun!
There’s also a mystery woven into the story when someone begins threatening to expose their ruse unless the Duke pays up. I was genuinely surprised when the culprit was revealed! Thankfully, everything works out in the end, and Rose and her Duke get their happily ever after.
Angela P. Johnson is one of my favorite authors, and I’m already looking forward to the audiobook. She always seems to choose the perfect narrators for these stories, and I can’t wait to hear this one brought to life.

I really enjoyed reading this book and couldn't put it down. This is the third book in the Madcaps of Mayfair series, and it certainly lived up to its title.
When I met Rose in the second book, I didn't think of her as a madcap. That's why I loved the way Angela E. Johnson opened this story—with Rose doing something daring. It was a challenge she embraced, and it was so much fun to watch how she handled it. After that opening, I had no doubt she belonged among the Madcaps. When I met Rose in the second book, I didn't think of her as a madcap. That's why I loved the way Angela E. Johnson opened this story—with Rose doing something daring. It was a challenge she embraced, and it was so much fun to watch how she handled it. After that opening, I had no doubt she belonged among the Madcaps. This is my first book by this author and I must say I am hooked! When I finished A Clever Ruse and realized there was a substantial backlog I could explore I almost squeeled with joy.
Regency that do not take themselves to seriously.. Regency Rom-Coms? Is that a term we use now in the book world???... they have become a new favorite thing of mine! I think they may possibly be vying for a new favorite genre spot for me.
A Clever Ruse is quite possibly more than half banter. More than half than book! At least it felt this way. If you, like me, think the witty banter is the best part of a regency romance then you will be very very pleased if you choose to read it.

Oh, how I love a good Regency romance that's clean, heartwarming, and includes a juicy fake engagement! This was only my second Angela E. Johnson novel, but I'm happy to announce that I'm hooked and found A Clever Ruse to be quite the delightful read! I loved seeing Rose get her happy ending! ❤️
Obviously, the fake engagement pretense and blackmail espionage elements were the highlight of the novel, but I also really enjoyed the witty banter between Bash and Rose! They make the cutest couple, and were so caring and compassionate to one another!
I also loved seeing the characters from the previous (and upcoming) novels in the series, and especially the sisterhood of Rose and her sisters and the brotherhood between Bash and his friends. The added suspense surrounding Violet (Bash's sister) and her mystery suitor was also a fun addition to the plot!

This is an above-par work by Author Angela Johnson I must say.
The story follows that of Rose Astley and the Duke of Pembroke who are caught in an unfortunate ruse of a courtship (otherwise referred to as fake-dating in modern tropes). They start with being friends and fake lovers and end up with the real thing.
There's a lot about the story I loved, for the one, it would be their natural affinity to each other, well written. For another, it would be that the Duke had such a great personality, friendly and affable. Rose was as much a kind soul herself. There was a lot of detail put into the making of both CP characters. Another would be that the author did take us on a merry goose chase on the mystery blackmailer. I had a few wild guesses and safe to say, one of my guesses scored a hit!
But one thing I couldn't fathom was Pembroke not standing up to Lady Beatrice's father on the initial threat of marriage, cowardly if you ask me, but I figured there had to be a reason for the false engagement at all.
With the references to the marriage of Rose's elder sister to one of the Duke's friends, I'm assuming there would already be a book on that because it's a series. Can't wait to read it.

What madcap way will Rose find romance and marriage? I am really enjoying this series of witty women challenging the expected norm of falling in love in regency England. In A Clever Ruse we follow Rose who is innocently embroiled in a secret engagement by the Duke of Pembroke. She agrees to go along with it but the road is not as smooth and straightforward as they would like and there is that wee complication of falling in love to deal with too.
This book was an engaging read filled with flirty talk, sweet romance and a wee bit of mystery. I found the plot flowed beautifully and I really did not want to put the book down. The characters were realistic with different backgrounds and character flaws that added dimension to the story. I love the regency period and these books are so easy to read and have satisfying plots and endings that leave you wanting more. I am eagerly waiting for the next book in the series.

If you want the funnest start to a regency story- give this a read. If you want to read a book that you just can't put down- you've found the right one. Even though this is book 3 in the Madcaps of Mayfair series, you can and will thoroughly enjoy it without reading the previous ones. However, you may be hooked and be compelled to read them all. I highly recommend it.

The Duke of Pembroke is a big flirt. While they are friendly and have associated in the same circles, there is no attachment. Until there is. A fake one. A fake engagement with strong rules to not blur the lines between what is real and what is for show. The main rule- no feelings and absolutely no flirting.

Well written, full of society, love, friends, family, intrigue, blackmail, secrets, twists and turns. Rose Astley is at a party and playing a game. She has taken the command from the ladies. She will have to climb a wall and a glass window to get an orange from the Duke of Pembroke's conservatory. Bad luck and she falls thru the glass and lands inside. Bash , the Duke, finds her and makes sure she is not hurt. When asks what happens, she explains to him . After a ball at his home, he is confronted by a Lady and her Father who want a marriage between them. He comes up quickly with Rose's name. Together they realize that they can fake an engagement so neither has to make a match with someone they do not want. Rose and Bash announce their engagement yet Violet his sister and Berkeley his friend start to act strange and secretive. Cece, her sister, is aware of what is going on and agree to keep their secret. Add in a blackmailer and there is a great story to read and a mystery to solve. The characters are witty and explosive to the page. Would recommend to everyone this story and the rest of the series.

The constant and almost relentless witty banter made this book such an enjoyable read! I don’t know if I’ve ever smiled so much while reading as I did with this one. Not only was the banter funny and clever, but it was always fresh and a bit flirty (while also staying appropriate of course, since this is a clean/no-spice regency romance!)
While it is the third book in the series, it can be read as a standalone, just be prepared to have a few characters and events from previous stories make appearances/be mentioned. It happens to be the first book I’ve read by this author, but it will certainly not be my last! The story did not suffer at all from my not starting with the first book. Of course, now I’m going to have to go back and read them!

Okay, I absolutely LOVED A Clever Ruse!
Rose and Bash are seriously so much fun together. The banter, the flirting, the fake engagement that is obviously going to cause problems… I was completely here for all of it.
And the Truth or Dare scene!! 😂 I don’t want to spoil anything, but watching that entire situation go completely awry was probably one of my favorite parts of the book.
I also loved that there was a little mystery and blackmail mixed in with the romance. It gave the story something extra without taking away from the part I really cared about, which was obviously Rose and Bash figuring out that maybe this whole “pretend” engagement wasn’t quite as pretend as they thought.
Basically, if you like fake engagements, friends-to-lovers, hilarious banter, a shamelessly flirty hero, a heroine who can absolutely hold her own, while falling for each other… READ THIS BOOK.

I loved this book - such light-hearted fun with 2 really engaging, likeable main characters who both have idiotic tendencies that lead them into trouble. The writing and plot are excellent with lots of wit and humorous situations that drew me in and kept me page turning, but there is enough nefariousness to prevent it becoming too saccharine. Yes, there's a villain, but lots of lovely side characters and even a secondary romance (how blind can some people be!) that add to the charm. I didn't even notice while reading it that it is truly clean and it honestly doesn't need any spice or anything else to pep it up.
I hadn't read the previous books in the series, but I don't think this affected my enjoyment of this book at all. Just more to look forward to reading.
Perfect for when you need some light, but well written, easy, escapist reading that makes you smile.

Rose Astley is not one to back away from a challenge, so it is no surprise that she finds herself in a dangerous situation that could have ended very badly. It’s good thing that Sebastian, Lord Pembroke, was there to come to her aid. This is a charming story with a fake engagement, a battle-axe rival and her father, fun nicknames, terrific side characters, and even a mystery to solve. I loved seeing Bash’s friends once again as they get involved in catching the person who is trying to ruin Bash and Rose. It was so satisfying to see them stopped, and I hope they learned their lesson, but it’s doubtful!
I loved this third book in the Madcaps of Mayfair series. While it can be read as a standalone, you’ll want to also read the other two books to fully enjoy this story. 4.5/5 stars

This is another great book in the series! I loved Rose she is was such a fun character. She took a command “dare” instead of question “truth” in a game being played by several members of the ton. She winds up falling thru the windows of the Duke of Pembroke’s (Bash) orangery. What a way to start a friendship/relationship. When Dash is set upon by a Duke and his daughter he claims a previous offer to Rose. He doesn’t realize his conversation has been overheard and must enter into a fake engagement with Rose. This was not your typical fake relationship as the characters are being blackmailed which involves a mystery as well as a love story. The more time Rose and Bash spend together the harder is is to distinguish between fake and real. This is book three in the series but can be read as a stand alone. I highly recommend this book and this author as she creates the best stories.

Oh how I adore Bash and Rose. These two from the first encounter of their story are DELIGHTFUL. The flirting, the not flirting, the conversation. These two are just meant for one another.
The way Johnson writes their chemistry is so satisfying. And the instances she places them in as the story progresses are such fun. And stressful. And romantic. Plus, excellent side characters between the family members and close friends. Their additions to the story and fantastic. From sisterly live to sibling rivalry and teasing and the best of friends. It’s a well rounded and enjoyable story.
It is a Regency romance done right. Angela E. Johnson is one of my favorite Regency romance authors and this one did not disappoint one bit.

A Clever Ruse is witty and refreshing. I have thoroughly enjoyed this latest in Angela E. Johnson's Madcaps of Mayfair series! Rose is so kind hearted, dynamic, and relatable. She cannot abide having her friends bullied. The results of Rose standing up for her friends is vastly entertaining!
Bash, Duke of Pembroke, creates a tangled web when he panics and implicates Rose. As they wind their way through their “clever ruse,” they encounter one delightful and revealing situation after another. Their ruse illustrates that the heart knows what it wants long before we are willing to lay claim to it with our mind!

All the witty banter creates this delightful historical romance. The storyline of a fake engagement brings on the clever ruse but there is so much more to this story. A game of truth or dare is the beginning of Miss Rose Ashley’s tumultuous season. How could such a silly game turn her life so upside down. And now she finds herself the talk of the town and engaged to the Duke of Penrose. This is a fun and charming addition to the Madcaps of Mayfair series. Each book is well written with enjoyable characters and great banter. There’s a little bit of mystery and a lot of intrigue. The third in the series I looked forward to this installment. However I didn't think it was as madcap or as good as the earlier books and at times i struggled to keep interest. Rose is determined, and her strong personality does lead her into dubious situations. Bash though I liked him in the previous book was less engaging for me. He seemed to lack the strength and confidence expected, blurting out Rose was his fiancee when under pressure. There was a lot of banter, some of it enjoyable. When the Duke of Pembroke wants to get out of an arrangement, he announced that he was secretly engaged to Rose, which was a big surprise to her! What follows is outings, dinner parties, all to support the ruse. But, what about Roses heart? A Clever Ruse is a Regency rom/com at it's best. Another good book by Angela E. Johnson; A Clever Ruse (Madcaps of Mayfair Book #3) was well written, with lots of witty banter, flirtation and the lovely romance that followed. A fake engagement brings Rose and Bash together and the more time and events they attend together, the closer their bond. The humour was another great addition making it something that I will definitely read on a lazy Sunday afternoon when I want something light and fun to read.
