Suffer through Safar: Endure. Evolve. Emerge.

The word safar in the Indian culture often refers to one's path. Suffer through Safar is a story about how hardships on a journey transform into meaning:
Enduring circumstances beyond her control that cultivate bravery and resilience.
Evolving her understanding of self and her relationships with greater depth and clarity.
Emerging as a truer, more confident version of herself and her place in the world.

South Asian diaspora, South Asian author, South Asian women, societal norms, cultural standards, religious boundaries, family expectations, transformation, emotional truth.

Suffer through Safar is an intimate memoir by first-time author Ravinder Kaur Sandhoo who beautifully examines and shares her family’s history. This story is multigenerational, beginning with her grandparents lives at the turn of the 20th century in India, revealing the family’s experiences through the post-colonial period and partition. It offers a fascinating glimpse into daily life in the 60’s in Delhi, the role of patriarchy in the lives of its women, and the enormous strength of her mother, a survivor of abuse, who overcame the odds as a single mother and first generation immigrant to Canada. This memoir feels both deeply personal yet universally relevant if you live in country like the US where you might meet first-generation immigrants on a daily basis.

Suffer through Safar left me wanting to learn more about 20th century India and Indian culture as a whole here in America. It is a remarkable story of resilience and would be a great recommendation for a book club or any other reader interested in feminism, overcoming adversity, and Indian history and culture.
