As someone who has spent time in multiple careers, started businesses, succeeded at some things, and learned from others that didn't go as planned, I found Stay Thirsty to be an enjoyable and relatable read.
Mark Haertzen's story isn't the typical entrepreneur book where every idea turns to gold and every setback is neatly packaged into a motivational quote. Instead, he openly shares both the victories and the failures that shaped his journey. That honesty is what makes the book work.
The title itself captures the central theme: stay hungry, stay curious, and keep looking for the next opportunity. Whether it was selling drinks in stadiums, launching businesses, or navigating the inevitable obstacles that come with entrepreneurship, Haertzen demonstrates that success is rarely a straight line.
One of the strengths of the book is that it feels conversational rather than instructional. You're not being lectured by a business guru. You're hearing stories from someone who has been in the arena, taken risks, won some bets, and lost others. The lessons emerge naturally through the experiences.
It's also a quick read. In fact, there are times when you'll feel the urge to skim ahead, and the author almost seems to encourage that approach. The book isn't trying to impress you with complexity. It's a collection of lessons, stories, and observations that readers can absorb at their own pace.
That said, if I were editing the book, there are a few sections I would have trimmed. A little tightening would have made the physical book feel less intimidating and perhaps improved the overall pacing. None of those sections hurt the story, but a leaner version might have made an already accessible book even stronger.
The book will especially resonate with entrepreneurs, small business owners, sales professionals, and anyone who has ever wondered if they should take a chance on themselves. Readers looking for a step-by-step business blueprint may be disappointed, but those who appreciate stories of persistence, resilience, and reinvention will find plenty to enjoy.
Perhaps the biggest takeaway is that failure isn't the opposite of success—it's often part of the process. Haertzen's willingness to discuss both sides of that equation gives the book credibility and makes its successes feel earned.
Stay Thirsty is a reminder that the people who accomplish interesting things are often the ones willing to keep moving forward when others would quit. That's a message worth hearing.
Recommended for: Entrepreneurs, salespeople, dreamers, risk-takers, and anyone who enjoys real-world stories about building something from nothing.

Stay Thirsty: A Serial Entrepreneur's Tale of Success & Failure is an honest and insightful exploration of entrepreneurship, ambition, resilience, and the realities behind building a successful career. Mark Haertzen shares a compelling journey that goes beyond achievements to examine the challenges, setbacks, lessons, and personal growth that come with pursuing big goals.

One of the book's greatest strengths is its authenticity. Haertzen presents entrepreneurship as a journey filled with both victories and obstacles, offering readers a realistic perspective on the determination, adaptability, and persistence required to continue moving forward. The balance between success and failure creates a narrative that feels practical and relatable.

The writing is engaging and reflective, combining personal experiences with valuable lessons for aspiring entrepreneurs and business-minded readers. Through his story, the author highlights the importance of learning from mistakes, embracing change, and maintaining the drive to keep pursuing new opportunities.

Another notable aspect of Stay Thirsty is its focus on the mindset behind entrepreneurship. The book explores the qualities that help individuals navigate uncertainty, take risks, and grow through experience. These themes give the story relevance beyond business, connecting with anyone interested in personal development and overcoming challenges.

Stay Thirsty is an inspiring and valuable entrepreneurial memoir that captures the highs, lows, and lessons found along the path of building something meaningful. Readers interested in business, leadership, and personal growth will find this book both motivating and insightful.

Stay Thirsty: A Serial Entrepreneur's Tale of Success & Failure is an expansive, experience driven memoir that explores the realities of entrepreneurship beyond the polished success narratives typically found in business literature.

At 574 pages, the book signals depth and breadth likely chronicling multiple ventures, pivots, setbacks, and reinventions across the author’s career. Mark Haertzen positions the entrepreneurial journey not as a linear ascent, but as a cycle of experimentation, failure, adaptation, and renewed ambition.

The title itself Stay Thirsty suggests a core philosophy: sustained hunger as a driving force. This mindset reframes failure not as defeat, but as necessary friction in the process of building, scaling, and evolving ventures.

Unlike purely tactical startup guides, this book appears to emphasize:

• Real world lessons from multiple ventures
• The emotional and psychological toll of entrepreneurship
• Risk taking and resilience
• Reinvention after failure
• Long term mindset over short-term wins

The inclusion of Mike E Broiwn suggests additional perspective or structural support, potentially enhancing clarity and narrative cohesion across such a large work.

Given its length, the book is particularly well suited for:

• Aspiring entrepreneurs seeking unfiltered insight
• Startup founders navigating uncertainty
• Business school students
• Leadership and mindset-focused readers
• Podcast audiences interested in founder stories

The key strength of Stay Thirsty lies in its authenticity. In a space saturated with highlight reels, a candid account of both success and failure offers credibility and relatability.

STAY THIRSTY feels honest in a way a lot of business memoirs don’t. What stood out to me is how uncertain everything actually was for Mark Haertzen. Nothing in his story feels guaranteed. He wasn’t following a perfect plan. He was constantly adjusting, pivoting, and trying to make the best decision with whatever information he had at the time. That part made the book feel real and relatable, because it shows how much of entrepreneurship is just figuring things out as you go.

The biggest takeaway for me is his mindset. He talks openly about risk, timing, and the pressure of making decisions when the outcome isn’t clear. He doesn’t pretend to be fearless or always right. Instead, he shows how he thinks through uncertainty, how he recalibrates after setbacks, and how he keeps moving even when things are messy. That honesty makes his story inspiring in a grounded way, not because everything turned out perfectly, but because he kept going anyway.

This book has a lot to offer for people who are just starting their entrepreneurship journey, and also for those who are already in it. Reading Mark’s story doesn’t just inspire beginners; it also makes people who are in the middle of their own journey feel less alone. It gives you something to return to when you’re stuck or unsure where to turn next. His Rocket Wisdom collection is the kind of thing you could honestly put on flash cards and carry with you whenever you need a bit of guidance.

Overall, I’d say STAY THIRSTY is a must‑read for entrepreneurs. It’s steady, honest, and full of lessons that come from real experience, not theory.

Staying Thirsty, written by Mark Haertzen is his educational writing about what it takes to start a business and what happens when it fails. It's his experiences as a serial entrepreneur, starting his enterprises at the age of 6. A positive mindset is the biggest thing to have when starting a business- taking risks is a big part of starting a business and sometimes, figuring out how to make-do with a shoe-string budget. Mark Haertzen tells the story of how he started his last major business, Rocket Man, how he had to pivot, making a lot of changes in order to make it a successful business.
