Matteo is a descendant of Mictlāntēcutli, who is also known as the God of Death, upon meeting Athena who is mortal there is an immediate connection between them, however in Matteo world it is forbidden to be with a mortal, but that doesn’t stop them. Matteo, and Athena love is beautiful the way they love each other, and not to mention the lengths Matteo would go to protect her is just soo ugh!! I love that for Athena. This story has dual pot so we get to see Matteo, and Athena view on somethings. When Athena meets Matteo friends who are also descendants of other gods I absolutely love them. Lety and Franco are siblings and I love their banter so much it reminded me of my brothers and I growing up. There is dialogue in Spanish as well and it made the story even more beautiful, and funny especially the banter between Franco and Lety their Spanish dialogue is literally siblings being siblings haha. I love how Rodriguez inputted the Mexican cultural in her story it is absolutely beautiful., with including lotteria being played, and the mention of my favorite telenovela I squealed and giggled because Fuego En La Sangre is a telenovela I grew up watching as kid, also some folklore we grew up hearing from our parents whenever we were bad haha *hint hint* "Ahi mis hijos." I loved this story so much I can wait for the second one.
Matteo—descendant of the God of Death—meets Athena, a mortal, and their connection is instant… even though their love is forbidden. And honestly? That doesn’t stop them. Their romance is intense, beautiful, and the way Matteo would do anything to protect her? I’m obsessed. Loved the plot twist of Athena’s birth origins.
Told in dual POV, we get both sides of their story, which makes it even more immersive. Matteo’s friends (fellow god-descendants) are a highlight—Lety and Franco’s sibling banter is hilarious and so relatable. The Spanish dialogue adds so much charm, especially their back-and-forth. It is like listening to a daily conversation in my household. I adored Franco and his sassiness.
I also loved the rich Mexican cultural touches—lotería and folklore. Such a beautiful, addictive read—I’m already waiting for book two. In my opinion this is a must read that will have you want more!
Let me start by saying the only reason I rated this 3 stars as opposed to 4 is because it was littered with grammar and spelling errors in both English and Spanish. This took away from the overall enjoyment, which is such a shame because the plot and story was absolutely amazing. I quite enjoyed the journey Athena and Mateo took (figuratively and literally). This story had me on the edge of my seat with all the plot twists and I so enjoyed the found family meets real family dynamics and how ride or die all of the characters were for each other.

I’ve been waiting to read this book for what feels like forever!! I came across a tiktok video by the author promoting it months ago and immediately fell in love with the vibes. Matteo and Athena are a match made in…infierno? Definitely not in heaven but in the best way possible, iykyk. I’m really hoping we get to know more about Franco and Ivana 👀
This was so good, Idk where to start! 4.5/5 rounded up only because a few of the things Athena did in the name of insta-love had me side eyeing the book. But, it all came together so beautifully! Mexican American representation hits so deeply for me 🥲 but taking it a step further and incorporating Aztec mythology and roots 🤯 There was so much going on and I never would've predicted any of it. I want more books like this! I enjoyed this so so much!
Honestly the dia de los muertos thing was so cute and lighthearted and the spice was spicin’ but I had to knock off half a star because some of the smut scenes were a little repetitive and also WHY ARE WE NOT TALKING ABOUT BIRTH CONTROL/STD STATUS BEFORE SEX? That is so normalized in many other books I read that I kind of set a high standard 😟
This story had good bones. I would’ve loved to have had more details and backstory from the other world and what the FMC will now become. There is so much hat could be told, but overall I enjoyed it.
