A tale in the spirit of the holiday pairs Sophie, who wants a kitten, with a little black stray she sees on Christmas Eve who wants a home, showing that sometimes wishes do come true
Vivian June Isoult French MBE was born in 1945 and educated at Exeter University. Vivian French was best known in school for being extremely skinny and for talking a lot. At school she developed an attachment to words and later became an actor, then a storyteller, and finally a writer of children's books. She is the author of more than two hundred books. Ms. French lives in Edinburgh, Scotland, and has four grown daughters.
Who will give a home to the Christmas kitten, as cute as a button, hungry and cold? Lots of people smile and are attracted by the kitten’s plaintive “Meeeow”, but nobody thinks they can take him in. Everyone has a good reason why they are sorry, but they just can’t help. And yet one little girl is desperate for a kitten of her own to love.
Of course this is a story which is telegraphed from the start. We are rooting for the little kitten who grows more sad and cold as the snow falls, more lonely as the evening gets darker, less hopeful as nobody seems to want it. But we know that it will end happily. We even know who is going to rescue the kitten, because his picture is on the cover. And we suspect by now, through clever repetition of the story, just who will receive a very special Christmas gift.
Christmas Kitten is a cosy feel-good picture story book for young children, which was first published in 1991. It was written by Vivian French, and has colourful illustrations in pen and watercolour by Chris Fisher. This series of “Walker books” is designed to be shared by adults and chilren, and Christmas Kitten especially benefits from being read aloud, enhanced with sound effects, to very young children (or those not so young). It is a simple heartwarming story, and one which may be asked for over and over again.
(We all know it is not usually a good idea to give pets at Christmas. They are not toys. But just sometimes there are very special reasons ...)
A little girl sees a little kitten on Christmas Eve, but isn't allowed to take him home. As the poor kitten wanders the streets, trying to find a place to stay warm, he stumbles into Santa's sleigh and curls up to take a nap. He awakens to find Santa distraught, because he is short one present. When he sees the kitten, he knows it is the perfect present for Sophie - the little girl from the beginning of the story. Sweet story and my kids love how the kitten ends up with the little girl from the beginning.
Synopsis:"Sophie wishes for a kitten just like the little black one she sees in the snow the day before Christmas. The kitten wishes for a home. Can the magic of Christmas Eve make both their wishes come true? Full color."
My Review: This was kind of a sad Christmas story. You can't help but feel bad for the little kitten looking for someone to love it and a warm place to sleep. The illustrations are very cute, but a little busy for really little eyes. A very sweet story.
A kitten wanders the streets on Christmas Eve, looking for a safe, warm place to sleep, but no one will take him in. Finally, he falls asleep on Santa's sack, and ends up as a Christmas gift for a little girl. Super cute Christmas story
