This turned out to be a surprisingly middle-of-the-road read—better than expected, but still ultimately forgettable.

Going in with low expectations (thanks to its overall rating), I was bracing for something rough, but the writing and editing were actually quite solid. Blackwood delivers a clean, readable novella that never feels sloppy or poorly constructed, which already puts it a step above many entries in the genre.

That said, the story itself doesn’t do much to stand out. As a novella, it’s quick and easy to get through, with just enough intrigue to keep things moving—but not enough depth to make it particularly memorable. The romance, in particular, feels underdeveloped. With minimal spice and limited emotional buildup, the connection between the main characters never quite lands.

The biggest frustration is the dialogue. Conversations between the leads tend to loop in circles, rehashing the same points without meaningful progression. Instead of building tension or intimacy, it often stalls the story’s momentum. Add in an unexpectedly heavy dose of bureaucracy—rules, structures, and procedural elements—and the narrative starts to feel weighed down by details that don’t add much payoff.

Overall, this isn’t a bad read—just a bland one. It’s competently written and mildly engaging, but lacks the spark, emotional pull, or narrative drive needed to make it truly satisfying. A decent “it’s fine” read, especially if you go in with tempered expectations.

The Alpha’s Unwanted Mate (A Rejected Mate Werewolf Romance)

The Alpha’s Unwanted Mate (A Rejected Mate Werewolf Romance) ~~ Sera… whew. My heart went out to her right away. She’s already at the bottom of her pack, doing everything right, staying quiet, not causing problems—and then fate decides to pair her with the most powerful Alpha around. Sounds like a dream, right? Yeah… NO.
Because the rejection?? PUBLIC. Brutal. Humiliating.
That whole scene had me sitting there like 😡💔 because Kassian didn’t just reject her—he made sure everyone saw it. And from that moment on, you feel every ounce of Sera’s pain, but also her pride. She doesn’t crumble the way you expect… she walks away. And I respected her for that.
Now Kassian… I’m not going to lie—I was not a fan at first 😤 He’s cold, calculated, and way too caught up in politics and power. But as the story unfolds, you start to see the cracks. The bond doesn’t just disappear, no matter how much he wants it to, and that slow-burn realization?? That’s where this book really shines.
What I LOVED was that this isn’t just a romance—it leans into power, identity, and transformation. Sera isn’t just “the rejected mate”… she’s something MORE. And when that starts coming out?? 👀🔥 That’s when things get really interesting.
There’s tension, danger, secrets with the Moon Council, and just enough world-building to keep you hooked without slowing things down.
If I had to be real for a second—the pacing in a few spots felt a little rushed, and I wanted just a bit more groveling from Kassian (because let’s be honest… he deserved to work harder 😅). But the emotional pull and storyline kept me turning the pages anyway.
This is one of those books where you start for the drama… and stay to see her rise.
I would definitely recommend this book. If you want to know what happens next, you’ll just have to read this book yourself ~ you won’t regret it.

Sera and Kassian

I absolutely loved this book and would thoroughly recommend it to everyone who enjoys great tales of overcoming rejection and becoming what no one can control. A tale of a woman overcoming adversity to become what no one imagined and the man who realised that sometimes love is all that matters.

DNF 48%. Wash, rinse, repeat ad nauseam. Why did you reject me? I was arrogant. Why did you reject me? I was arrogant. Why did you reject me? I was arrogant.
