This is not like the other books Jason Hill has written.
The MC is suppose to be bright, but he know nothing. His dad is a dwarf and mom is a human. Mom dies at age 11. Dad takes him to the dwarfs, he knows nothing of dwarfs, not even how the families are set up. His mom didn't want the dad to teach him how to be strong even though they live where monsters are. The story shows that the Mother wanted the kid to die pretty much right after he turned old enough to be on his own, even though it appears she loved him greatly. Only someone who doesn't care about your future well being would act this way. Also it says that his mom and dad loved each other a lot, but then why did the MC know nothing about his dwarfing heritage? The 2 choices I see are either the Mother didn't like the Dad, or the Mother didn't like the 'Dwarf' Dad. If the Mother really loved the dwarf dad, then she would want to have the dad telling stories about the dwarfs all the time while the MC was growing up, but instead Silence. The kid also acts like a Mama's boy even when he is 16. His internal monologuing is very Victim mentality. He doesn't like to do something, he quits and throws his stuff down and walks away. This MC is so different then the MC in his other works I am wondering if this is really written fully by Mr. Hill. That is about the first third of the book. The rest of the book is pretty much just making different metal items. Of coarse they start very simple and get more difficult as the story goes, but just another item to make after item to make, no real story. The MC doesn't grow in maturity and there doesn't really seem to be much of a story arc. As I stated he seems to have a victim mentality and in the last 5% of the book, you see it is still there. When things are going good for him and everyone is propping him up he is happy, but when someone isn't all for him, poor little oh me.
