A Kenotic Way of Contemplative Healing: Julian of Norwich, Neuroscience, and the Centrality of Safety in Healing Trauma

Rate this book
Neuroscience and mystical theology intersect to inform a way of being together with God and one another that heals our trauma and alienation. Grounded in research, this work offers a kenotic, contemplative way of inner healing. The creation of noise-free, shame-free, formula-free space within ourselves and with others can heal our souls, our communities and perhaps even our world.

From Dr. Bradley Jersak, St. Stephen’s University:

Susan Carson is a Julian scholar and trauma-informed spiritual director. During her studies, she found her way into the deep mines of Julian's heart and resurfaced as a treasury of goodness. The wealth she discovered in Julian’s work is especially valuable for practitioners of spiritual formation and inner healing. Susan has done her homework on the powerful intersection of contemplation and brain science to bring about healing and nurture in those who've suffered severe trauma. She writes as a firsthand witness of spiritual breakthrough in clients who were otherwise stuck but now in whom Julian's great hope for human transformation has been restored. This little work is a monument to the world’s growing awareness of a more wholistic and science-affirmed “mystical neurology.” In my mind, Julian and Susan have located the active therapeutic ingredient in Christ as great physician, healing broken hearts in a fraught world.

Presence is healing!

Drawing on the insights of Julian of Norwich, contemporary neuroscience, and her experience developing a soul care ministry in Cincinnati, OH, Susan Carson demonstrates a unified message: Presence is Healing. Carson presents ancient wisdom and modern science in a clear, accessible way, showing that these concepts are not only understandable but intuitive.

What makes Carson’s approach especially powerful is its authenticity. Long before she explored the mystical or scientific foundations, she witnessed the healing impact of presence firsthand as she created sacred space for hurting individuals, and taught others to do the same. As a result, readers will find both a thoughtful framework and an encouraging reminder that they, too, can offer this meaningful act of care in a world deeply in need of healing.

I was so pleased to receive an advanced reader copy of this book!
As I read Susan’s book, I felt my heart burning within me just as the two disciples felt on the road to Emmaus when Jesus spoke to them the truth about Himself. This book captures Jesus’s heart of love for those who suffer. This is an ESSENTIAL training guide for all who endeavor to partner with Jesus in bringing healing presence to those who have experienced trauma.

This is such an important book highlighting how we can help each other heal and thrive in this trauma-saturated world. Susan is writing not as an educator but as someone who has spent years in the trenches with those seeking healing and a deeper understanding of God. My highlighter had dried out by the time I reached the last page. Highly recommend. *I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

Carson offers inspired insights into the writings of Julian of Norwich and connects them with current neouroscientific research. The connective tissue is not only research, but her own experience in contemplative healing as director and practitioner of Roots&Branches - a non-profit in Cincinnati, OH.
You’ll enjoy new insights into a 14th century mystic from a modern day mystic.
