What started as a mysterious infection on a boat in Gotham Harbor has grown into one of the most formidable threats Gotham City has ever faced! Now, with mere hours to go before Batman’s system is entirely overtaken by his infection, the Dark Knight must attempt to save his city—and himself—before it’s too late! Tom Taylor and Mikel Janín’s exhilarating exploration of the terror of a world without fear ends here!

What a finale! Detective Comics #1106 wraps “The Courage That Kills” with a perfect mix of pulse-racing action, brainy Bruce moments, and real thematic weight. Batman going all-in on fear itself — literally injecting Scarecrow’s gas to outthink the No Fear virus — was a clever, visceral beat that stuck with me.
The psychology of fear vs courage threaded through the issue gave the story real depth, and Janín’s art is just stunning — from chaotic battle set pieces to quieter character moments like Bruce checking on Damian.
This arc ended in a way that feels earned and bold — a dramatic showcase of character and idea that leaves me hyped for whatever comes next. 5⭐️, easily.

Tom Taylor's Batman is quickly becoming one of my favorite iterations of Batman. This whole story arc has been phenomenal, but this ending was truly incredible. I felt a whole roller coaster of emotions while reading this. What a wild ride. I wouldn't mind having Tom Taylor and Mikel Janin on this series until the end of time.
Solid end to a solid storyline with absolutely fantastic art holding it up along the way. As we get into this issue one question is at the top of our minds: what does a city without fear look like? Coming off of the last issue as Batman fights the lion in front of Pennyworth manor, we find out that the lion has already won. The cloud at the start of this storyline, that rolled in with the ship, dispersed across the city and infected everyone. In some regards it’s quite positive, fear is no longer holding people back from getting married, or leaving their abusive spouse, or even coming out to their family…but it’s also taking away the part of yourself that tells you not to hop on a train, that paranoid tug that tells you to turn around “there may be danger lurking” is now quiet, and any semblance of risk is gone as we see Damian knocked out on the floor from the trap he went into last issue, an we see Barbara overrun by a mob as she is unable to see when the odds are not in her favor. The people of Gotham are sick of living in fear under their oppressive police commissioner and the cops are no longer fearing holding back as two crowds meet in the city center. Hell even Jim Gordon couldn’t hold back his anger, resulting in him punching Vandal right in the face.
But it’s time to end things, batman is in no current position to fight as he cannot recognize danger…but he has a plan for that. He rips out one of his tubes and slams a dose of Crane’s fear toxin into his system. He has poisoned himself with fear in order to fight back. He finds confront, pain, love, rage, nurture and loss all with the fear and that is something he can work with, he knows fear and it feels good and it mean that he can plan. He triggers something in his belt as he steps forward to fight the lion, fear and reality blend as he finally sees the blows coming and is able to look for the second. He is able to knock the lion back, right on the Batmobile he summoned just a second ago. With the lion out he handcuffs him to the manor gate so he can deal with the rest of the city. He falls terrific and gives him the update, as terrific is currently looking over the city and the mob heading right for the police force emboldened with no fear of consequences and a lot of guns. Batman has already prepped for this eventuality with terrific and a method of delivery is already ready. This will be difficult but batman is sure the people will come through it.
Batman first heads for Damian to make sure he is okay, and then he gets a call from Barbara and orders her out of the field as she is infected as well. As batman drives into the city the delivery method passes overhead…crop dusters outfitted with fear toxin, scarecrow couldn’t have planned it better himself. Right as the crowd is about to approach the line of cops, with Harvey Bullock at the front, as the first bullets are fired…batman swings the Batmobile in front to intercept the bullets right as the crop dusters spread the fear gas over the city. The virus the people are infected with is minor compared to batman, so the effect of the fear toxin is even greater. Batman stands on top for the Batmobile before everyone, connecting to the screens of Gotham’s main square as he displays his face everywhere when he very steely tells them all to go home…scaring the hell out of every single one of them and sending them all running. But this was only a temporary measure, they still don’t have an antidote. But batman isn’t sure as he has a hunch, but right now he needs Terrific to take Damian to Dr Mid-Nite while he follows up on the hunch. He goes back to Lion, chained up at the manor gate, as he continues to yell about how batman has stripped Gotham of their freedom. He refuses to give batman the cure as without fear he has no power and batman will always be Gotham’s monster. In that moment batman desperately wanted to take the cowl off and show Leo things are not as black and white, for Bruce Wayne to apologize for taking his father away and for batman to explain why…but he doesn’t and he can’t tell of its cowardice or courage that stops him. Earlier the Lion said he came to check on an old friend, he came to check on Bruce Wayne and now he knows why. Bruce heads inside to find a gift waiting for him, a neatly packaged drink. As Bruce takes off his cowl we see his grisly beaten infected face. As he takes the drink to terrific, he discovers his hunch was right…the lion gave the cure to Bruce Wayne and Michael is immediately sure they can begin manufacturing and dispersal of a cure within days. Even the boy from the boat can be cured, even though he has to live with the horror of what he survived and those he lost. Two weeks pass and Bruce Wayne visits Leo in Arkham Towers. Leo was afraid he wouldn’t come, which is quite ironic, but even if Bruce is disappointed Leo wanted to thank Bruce for caring about him. He promises that he won’t stop and he understands why Bruce keeps trying…because this city scared him once too. In truth they are both scared little children of Gotham trying to fix it with two entirely different methods of staying brave in the face of it. Wow.

This was so good. Taylor killed it with this arc and Janin has become one of my favorite artists. The ending felt right and Bruce/Batman showed why they are what Gotham needs. So excited to see what is next from this creative team.
