My second New Year’s book this week. We have Christmas in July, so why not New Year’s in August?!
I can’t say enough good things about Shari Low’s "One" books. This one is a heartfelt story about second chances and female friendships. It isn’t always easy to find the strength to do your best when life throws you a curveball. I loved the three women in this story so much—they were all facing personal issues and trying to heal. They all learn that it takes time to do so, that it’s the little things that help along the way, and that we just have to take it one day at a time.
I found the book uplifting overall, even when the characters were going through hard struggles. The women were easy for me to connect with because their emotional journeys are balanced out with humour and even a little bit of hope. Of course, some plot developments were a bit predictable, but the relationships and writing were engaging. The message was so positive that it made the story such an enjoyable read.
If you’re looking for a warm, uplifting comfort read that leaves you with a smile, this is definitely one to add to the old TBR. It’s the perfect reminder of how powerful a good support system can be when life gets chaotic. I love how I always feel so optimistic after reading a book by Shari Low!

I can’t say enough good things about Shari Low’s "One" books. This one is a heartfelt story about second chances and female friendships. It isn’t always easy to find the strength to do your best when life throws you a curveball. I loved the three women in this story so much—they were all facing personal issues and trying to heal. A standalone novel with a gripping plot set in that fictional Glasgow we all came to love. The most amazing set of characters old and new move along a timeline which spans over 12 months instead of the usual 24 hours. I’d say the experiment was absolutely successful!
Another great book by the ever so talented Shari Low. Brilliant.

This was such a lovely, uplifting read that really reminded me how unpredictable life can be.
Following the lives of Sheena, Orla, and Maddie, the story explores what happens when carefully laid plans begin to unravel. I loved that each woman was at a completely different stage in life, yet their struggles, hopes, and fears all felt so relatable. Their journeys were emotional, funny, frustrating at times, and ultimately full of hope.
I found myself completely invested in all three storylines, and I enjoyed seeing how each character grew as they learned that sometimes the best things happen when life doesn’t go according to plan. There were moments that made me smile, moments that tugged at my heart, and plenty of surprises along the way.
This is a warm, heartfelt novel about friendship, family, love, second chances, and finding the courage to embrace change. If you enjoy emotional contemporary fiction with relatable characters and plenty of heart, I’d definitely recommend giving this one a read.

I’ve read many of Shari Low’s ‘One’ books over the years, and although this one is a standalone, I still recognised a few familiar faces along the way. Shari first became well known writing with Russ King, but with over forty bestsellers to her name, it’s clear she’s earned her reputation in her own right. She writes with such ease and confidence, and her characters are always spot on. This story has a brilliant twist at the end too, and I absolutely loved it.
Sheena, Orla and Maddie are all pregnant, each in completely different circumstances, and for all three it’s a surprise — but one thing they agree on is that they want their baby. And guess who else is pregnant? The midwife. They all meet at antenatal classes, forming an unlikely little group, but it soon becomes clear there may be more linking them than any of them realise.
It’s a heartfelt, engaging story that brings these women together in ways that feel both unexpected and deeply satisfying. Shari Low balances humour, honesty and emotion so well, and the connections between the characters unfold with real warmth. The twist at the end is clever and beautifully delivered, tying everything together in a way that left me smiling. A gorgeous read.

This was such a comforting read, exactly the kind of warm, uplifting story I have come to expect from Shari Low. One Day at a Time gave me all the familiar feelings I wanted from these books, while also changing the usual format enough to make it feel slightly different.
Normally, the stories span a single twenty-four-hour period and follow four characters whose lives gradually begin to overlap. This time, there were only three main characters, and the story unfolded over nine months instead. It still had the same recognisable structure, with the different perspectives slowly connecting, but the longer timeframe altered the pace quite considerably.
I completely understood why the story needed to cover several months, as certain relationships and situations required time to develop realistically. However, I did sometimes feel as though I was missing important parts of the characters’ lives. In the previous books, we are with everyone throughout one intense day, experiencing every conversation, decision and revelation alongside them. Here, several weeks could pass before we returned to a character, by which point decisions had already been made, difficult conversations had taken place, and shocking news had been absorbed.
It was not necessarily a bad approach, and it allowed the story to cover far more than would have been possible within twenty-four hours, but it did make me feel slightly removed from some of the most emotional moments. I occasionally wished we had been able to remain with the characters for longer, rather than leaving them at a crucial point and rejoining them once they had already begun dealing with the consequences. The format worked for the story being told, but it did not have quite the same immediacy or intensity as the earlier books.
That said, there were still plenty of surprises along the way. Just when I thought I understood where a storyline was heading, another revelation would appear and shift everything in a new direction. Shari Low is very good at balancing emotional subjects with humour and warmth, so even when the characters were facing painful or complicated situations, the book never became too heavy.
The characters were, as always, well written and easy to like. They each had their own problems, insecurities and difficult choices to make, but they also felt like people I could genuinely care about. Even when I did not completely agree with their decisions, I understood the emotions behind them and wanted everything to work out for them.
One of my favourite things about these books is the familiar world surrounding the main story. Previous characters appear around the edges, sometimes only briefly, but their presence makes every new instalment feel like returning somewhere comfortable. It is lovely to discover what has happened to people from earlier books without their lives taking over the current story. Those small connections give the series such a warm sense of continuity and make the world feel much bigger than the three characters we are currently following.
Although the different timeframe meant this did not feel quite the same as the previous books, it still had the heart, humour and emotional warmth that make Shari Low’s stories so enjoyable. I would have liked to experience more of the characters’ journeys directly, rather than sometimes catching up with them after important events had already happened. However, I still became invested in their lives and enjoyed seeing how everything came together.
Overall, One Day at a Time was another really good, feel-good read. It was comforting, familiar and full of characters I wanted to spend time with, while still offering enough shocks and emotional moments to keep the story moving. Sheena finally decides she's leaving her husband after almost thirty years together, and honestly, I was so proud of her for making an actual decision. This woman had her future lined up. Fresh start. New chapter. Freedom. Then life immediately went, "Cute," and started throwing curveballs at her like it had taken her resignation personally.
Meanwhile Orla is over here trying so hard to start a family that I wanted to wrap her in a blanket and tell her to stop carrying the entire emotional load by herself. Every month she's hoping this is finally the month, while her marriage starts feeling a lot less like a partnership and a lot more like she's dragging someone else uphill. I kept wanting better for her before she even admitted she deserved better.
Then there's Maddie, who spent years putting her own life on hold to care for her mum. She finally reaches the point where she's ready to start living for herself again, reconnects with someone from her past, and... well... let's just say the universe clearly believes "fresh start" should always come with at least one completely unexpected complication.
The thing I loved is that these women don't know they're slowly wandering into each other's lives. They're all busy dealing with their own disasters, making the best decisions they can with the information they have, and accidentally becoming exactly the people someone else is going to need. By the time they start crossing paths, it felt less like coincidence and more like life quietly saying, "None of you are doing this alone anymore."
And can we please talk about Val and Jessie? Every time they showed up I relaxed because I knew somebody was about to get either phenomenal advice or a reality check. Sometimes both. Everyone deserves friends who will support your bad day without supporting your bad decisions.
There are a lot of emotional things packed into this story. Grief. Marriage. Fertility. Starting over when you thought your life was already mapped out. But none of it feels like the characters are trying to win the Misery Olympics. They just keep getting up every morning and dealing with whatever new nonsense has landed on their doorstep, which honestly felt incredibly real.
Maddie's story probably hit me the hardest. After spending so much of herself caring for someone else, she has to remember she's allowed to have a future too. That landed without making a big speech about it. Sometimes the hardest thing isn't letting someone go. It's letting yourself keep living afterward.
By the time everyone ended up heading toward the same place at the end of the year, I was ridiculously attached to this whole messy little community. I wasn't reading to see if every plan worked out anymore. I was reading because I wanted these women to catch a break. Just one. As a treat.
This was an easy 4 stars for me. It made me laugh, it got me a little emotional, and it reminded me that the best plans in the world don't stand a chance once real life decides it has other ideas.

Shari Low's newest novel differs slightly in her approach to having the story take place in a 24 hour period. In this one, the present takes place in 24 hours. However, we go back in time to 9 months prior. This is important to the story as it gives the reader a starting point for what is happening in the present.
We follow Sheena. Orla and Maddie as they each are determined to take hold of their future. However, life usually throws a curve ball in our plans, and in the instance of our 3 characters- it's a big, life altering one! Each must decide how they will navigate the path on which they have found themselves.
I loved all the characters. Low develops people with humor, heartache, emotion like no other author I have read. As we see the characters struggle, we also see the themes of friendship, humor, and wisdom. The three lives connect between common friends/relationships with other people in this Glasgow community.
Sheena is a relationship counselor and is struggling with her marriage. Maddie is dealing with the grief over the death of her mother. She is living with a friend she has known since childhood, but he is leaving to pursue a singing career in Nashville. Maddie needs to find a cheap place to live, and a new sadness that she is alone again. Orla is a nurse. She is struggling to get pregnant. Orla has also discovered her husband has been cheating. Once again, the author takes delicate issues and writes with compassion. She focuses on the resiliency within, and the connections to others, and highlights that it is in this space where we find hope.
The one thing that I missed in this book, compared to Low's past "One Day" books, is the deep intimacy that I usually feel towards knowing and understanding the characters. In the other books, we are with each character over 24 hours, and we get to see all their thoughts, struggles and decisions at each moment that it happens, fostering a depth to the characters. I understand why this story needed more time- we would definitely struggle with it if we did not have the backstories. And overall, it worked very well. I still understood the characters, loved the people. I just felt that there were gaps as it would skip a couple of weeks and we were not included in certain decisions/thoughts in the moment. But, the stories do connect and the overall experience was what I have come to expect from Shari Low's stories.

This is only my second Shari Low book after What If?, but I think I'm already falling for her writing style and the way she tells a story. Basically, what I like about Shari's books here is that they really don't feel like the usual love stories.
This time, I have the chance to understand a little of the Scottish culture and humour. We get women of different ages, with different struggles, all going through their own stories at the same time, but fate helps them meet each other. Andd.. I think this is my first book I,ve ever read where I can find a lot of babies in one story?!
With Orla, I had a feeling quite early that something wasn't right with her husband. The way she praised him felt tooo perfect, but even though he seemed to go along with what she wanted all along, he seemed like he's somewhere else. He did not have the same enthusiasm as Orla. But towards the end, she still has the capability of treating the 'other woman' with kindness. How I love the value that hurt doesn't necessarily have to turn women against one another.
Secondly, Sheena's story made me think about marriage from a different perspective. The value of finding freedom, finding yourself, finding your dreams might feel empowering, but I saw it differently. I think there can also be something beautiful about choosing to accept that one person's imperfections especially when they have been with us for so many years through all ups and downs. That kind of companionship has value too.
As for Maddie.. perhaps I would have done the same thing if I were in her shoes. Of the three women, I think she might be the strongest for me. Yet despite everything she has been through, she also has so much love in her life. Something to value much.
In the end, as Orla says, maybe some things aren't coincidences at all:
"It's just the fates, taking us to where we should be."
In life, people might change. Unexpected mishaps might occur. But life must go on. We just have to take it One day at a time and see where life takes us. We can put in every effort, but God is the greatest planner after all.
Overall, I closed this book feeling satisfied. Two Shari Low books down, and I think it's safe to say that her storytelling works for me. Gonna catch up on all the other books of hers soon!

This time, I have the chance to understand a little of the Scottish culture and humour. We get women of different ages, with different struggles, all going through their own stories at the same time, but fate helps them meet each other. Andd.. I think this is my first book I,ve ever read where I can find a lot of babies in one story?!
With Orla, I had a feeling quite early that something wasn't right with her husband. The way she praised him felt tooo perfect, but even though he seemed to go along with what she wanted all along, he seemed like he's somewhere else. He did not have the same enthusiasm as Orla. What a beautifully written, heartwarming story. From the very first chapter I found myself completely immersed, and it was the perfect feel-good holiday read that left me with a smile on my face.
The story follows three very different women, each from completely different walks of life, along with the friendships that shape them. As their individual journeys unfold, it becomes clear that they are connected in ways they could never have imagined, making for an emotional and uplifting read.
Although I guessed one of the twists before it was revealed, it certainly didn’t spoil my enjoyment. There were still plenty of surprises along the way, and I loved discovering how all the pieces of the story fitted together.
The characters were warm, relatable and easy to invest in, and I found myself genuinely caring about each of them. Their friendships, personal struggles and growth made this such an engaging and emotional novel.
This is a story filled with hope, friendship, love and second chances. It’s uplifting without feeling overly sentimental and is one of those books that leaves you feeling happier for having read it.

A stand alone story with new characters set in the ‘One Day’ universe. The novel opens on the maternity ward at Glasgow Central Hospital on Hogmanay, this time instead of the story playing out over a day Lowe takes us back to nine months earlier. Like her other novels we are introduced the cast of characters and then get to meet each. I love the way she fleshes the characters, they always feel like my friends by the end of the story and love the way the different storylines intertwine by the end.
In this novel we meet Sheena, a relationship counselor with her own romantic issues; Maddie, a hairdresser, who is grieving her mother’s death and has recently connected with an old flame who is about it make it big in Nashville and Orla, a nurse with infertility issues and a cheating husband. Lowe covers all these topics delicately. Whilst I guessed a secret connection between characters, ai still enjoyed seeing how things played out and how the three women become their own found daily. Another heartwarming, emotional read and character driven read from Shari.

There are a number of characters to keep track of - but Ms. Low does have a character list, which I found myself referring to quite often. There were some funny moments, some sadder ones, and many many good friends supporting their friends. This book takes place over one day at the beginning, then goes nine months prior, which helps flesh out the storyline and characters. For me, this book was okay. I think that although usually I’m okay with UK-based books, but for some reason this book felt a bit too UK-in-joke/UK-situational for my taste (I know Tesco and M&S, but some of the snacks, TV programs, and the like I had to use a search engine) - and that took away some of my enjoyment, sadly.

I love the way Shari Low followed three woman and their separate surprising journeys to and through pregnancy and meshed their lives together, including some twists on twists from one New Year's (Hogmanay in Scotland) to the next. It's set in greater Glasgow but centered in a small community that author Shari Low has developed and used in many of her recent novels. Beloved characters like Val, Jess and Alyssa are back, providing sympathy and support. The sisterhood support is strong, with some less than ideal(!) husbands and an absentee father following his country music dream.

This book had a slightly different format from lots of the previous books I have read by Shari Low in that it was not narrated over 24 hours but set in the present and then goes back to 9 months previously.
There were lots of new and diverse characters. All with interesting and very realistic storylines. Some old favourite characters reappeared too, which I really enjoyed.
Friendship, love, angst, secrets and other emotional issues. This made me giggle at times, cry at others and be frustrated with some of the characters on occasion. But most of all I enjoyed the clever way all the stories were linked together.
One of those books you love from the very first page, that you cannot stop reading as you want to know how it ends, but then at the same time hope it never has to finish as you are enjoying it so much.
Highly recommended. Cannot wait for the next book by one of my favorite writers of this genre.

Well that was another brilliant Shari Low book!
Orla is desperate to start a family with her husband but she can’t seem to get pregnant. Sheena has been with her husband for entire adult life and is ready to start a new chapter without him. Maddie left her fancy hairdressing job in Edinburgh to look after her dying mum.
A twist of fate sees the three women thrown into each others lives and their worlds become one. The three women find a way to get through what life has thrown at them with the support from their own friends too.
I love how each woman has a brilliant support system. I especially loved Val and Jessie who are my absolute favourites in a Shari Low novel. I also loved the other characters like Yvie
An absolutely brilliant and uplifting story I could literally go back to the start and read it all over again! I haven’t laughed so hard at a book in a very long time.
Orla is desperate to start a family with her husband but she can’t seem to get pregnant. Sheena has been with her husband for entire adult life and is ready to start a new chapter without him. Maddie left her fancy hairdressing job in Edinburgh to look after her dying mum.
A twist of fate sees the three women thrown into each others lives and their worlds become one. The three women find a way to get through what life has thrown at them with the support from their own friends too.
I love how each woman has a brilliant support system. I especially loved Val and Jessie who are my absolute favourites in a Shari Low novel. I also loved the other characters like Yvie

Very good!
Unlike the other books in this loosely connected series, this takes place over almost a year instead of one day. New characters are introduced and old friendships and families are reacquainted. It's always a treat to pay a visit to Weirbridge and the surrounding areas!
Orla, Maddie and Sheena are expectant mothers. 2 of them are dealing with marital issues and 1 isn't sure where her situationship sits. One thing they all have in common (actually there are many revealed at the end, but I don't do spoilers) is the love for their future babies. There are many secrets revealed as the story unfolds, some good, some not so much. But as all books by this author, the plot is well-crafted and the reader doesn't see the twists coming.

Shari Low has crafted an absolute gem of a story in One Day at a Time- an uplifting, beautifully emotional reminder that even when life throws your best laid plans off course, something wonderful can take their place.
The heart of the book follows Orla, Maddie, and Sheena. Coming from completely different walks of life, their paths cross in the shared whirlwind of an antenatal class. I loved watching their connection bloom from tentative small talk into a powerful, heartwarming friendship. Shari Low captures that magic of unexpected sisterhood so effortlessly. A special shout out to their midwife, too, who adds so much warmth to their journey (and delivers a delightful little twist of her own at the end!).
If you need a story that celebrates new beginnings, resilience, and the sheer joy of female friendship, this is a must read!

I read this knowing it would be a light and fluffy feel-good novel, so it was never going to be a top scorer for me, but I did tire of it slightly (which isn't what you want from a piece of escapism). Firstly, the plot drops were so massively signposted I was just irritated that it took so long for the reveals (with the exception of one smaller one towards the end). And secondly, it felt like every few paragraphs one of our main three characters gushed at how amazing their female network is and how grateful they are for it. Lovely sentiment, don't get me wrong, but just far too frequent for my liking.
However, the characters are deliciously well-rounded (and distinct from one another), and the writing is good and flows well, so if you're looking for an easy, girlfriends-are-great style read and don't mind knowing what's coming, then this book is a perfectly good choice.

Lovely easy reading. Shari Low has again created a wonderful group of characters who each depict at least one person we know! The story starts on new Years Eve in a central Glasgow maternity ward where we meet some of your characters. Before any spoilers are given we are taken back a year to the start of the characters stories. We see them go through marriages that are failing, past regrets, infidelity and possibly unrequited love
Without giving any spoilers we go through the ups and downs of most of the characters lives which are sometimes heartwarming, sometimes infuriating and often emotional.
Ms Low has again written about characters who you would really want to be your friends and pulls you into the story from the first page.

This book was one I raced through !
The perfect summer read, warm, uplifting and sometimes heartbreaking.
3 amazing woman, with three different lives all connected together by their pregnancies.
Shanna, Orla and Maddie become firm friends as they navigate not only their pregnancies but the turmoil within each of their lives. Their stories were told month by month which I think give the story an added twist as I was keen to know what was going to unfold next .
This story explored how life rarely turns out how we have planned it , and even though things may look perfect on the outside they rarely are.
The book was filled with laugh out moments, uplifting female friendships, hope and second chances.
I throughly enjoyed it ! A perfect ending for a perfect holiday read for me

Couldn’t put it down!
I love all Shari Low’s books. If I were to say they follow a formula it would be true, but they’re so much more than that.
Some of the characters have featured in other books, but you don’t need to have read them to enjoy this. It would add to your enjoyment though, so I would urge you to find some of the other books.
The story takes place on one day, as the title suggests, but there is a whole backstory to keep you wondering how everyone is connected. It’s a whole emotional rollercoaster, and I laughed as much as I cried. I would highly recommend it, though maybe don’t read it on the bus unless you don’t mind your fellow passengers thinking you’re a bit unhinged!

Sheena, Orla and Maddie all have a plan, but as they say the best made plans often go awry. We follow the lives of these three ladies over a year.
An enjoyable story with a lot happening with big changes to come in each of their lives. I did become a little lost at times there are so many different characters within the story I felt I needed to a big chart to remember them all fortunately that did not distract me from the lives of our three main characters. Enjoyable and heartwarming with a lovely finale where everything comes together beautifully.
