Abandoned by her father as a child, lovely Rayne North journeys to Nevada for a reunion with her reprobate parent and gets more than she had bargained for in the person of her father's handsome partner, Case O'Malley, a Union secret agent.
I'll leave it to some future therapist to determine why I thought this was quite so superior to all other efforts in the paperback romance genre... but man, did I like this book. I remember particularly vividly a scandalous sickbed/sexual awakening scene, but in fairness I also remember learning a lot about mines. In fact, I was able, on the AP American History exam, to correctly answer a question about the Comstock Lode solely due to Ms. Weldon's commitment to historical detail. Also, I think you could argue that the title is taken from Evelina: Or the History of a Young Lady's Entrance into the World by Fanny Burney, which gives it a bit of gilding.
